In Your Face Bill Simmons!
Last night, with 12 games left and despite an absolutely ridiculous amount of injuries, we surpassed Simmons' prediction of 41 wins on the season. So, in your face and go Blazers!

There were so many ghastly predictions in that column – him being off with the PTBs was the least of it… But to be fair, this was a fairly unpredictable season. Who had the Milwaukee Bucks at the 5 seed?
2010-11 dream lineup: Oden/LMA/Batum/Roy/Dre; Okafor/Freeland/Cunningham/Webster/JB/Pendy/Mills.

Although
I could’ve told you the Spurs were going to be a very average team. RJ is just not a good player. I don’t know why everyone was so high on them to start the season Him picking them to finish first was a really bad pick.
The only reason he did that is because he, like us, hates the L*kers.
I can live with that reason
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Great Job Bill! (sarcasm)
Western Conference
1. San Antonio, 64-18
2. L.A. Lakers, 63-19
3. Utah, 51-31
4. New Orleans, 48-34
5. Dallas, 46-36
6. L.A. Clippers, 45-37
7. Houston, 44-38
8. Denver, 44-38
9. Phoenix, 43-39
10. Zombies, 42-40
11. Portland, 41-41
man, he did a poor job of guestimating in October.

the ones that stand out there
Portland, Clippers, New Orleans, Denver. Portland was just a crazy pick to begin with – and he even admitted that. No idea why he thought Denver would fall so far after the WCF appearance. New Orleans was CLEARLY a team on the way down last year – why he thought they would finish 4th is beyond me. Even if Paul didn’t get hurt, the Hornets would have been fighting for a 7/8 seed at best.

He talks a lot about how the rules favor skilled point guards, and his predictions reflect that to an extent.

He also talks alot about knowing everything about basketball.
And I’d say his predictions reflect that he is just guessing. It almost looks like he took last years top 11 teams, scrambled them up, then assigned win-loss totals to make it work. Except for Portland, that is. He loves to get our goat, so the Portland prediction was more of a shot than a guess or an actual assessment of the Blazers.

meh
in his defense he did say that there is always one team that does better than expected one year and comes out flat the next, pdx was as good an option as any…
I like the fact that these guys have been flat while assailed with all of the injuries and look to be near 50 wins still…
Thar bodes well for thefuture

Who would have guesses New Orleans would be the worst team in the SW conference? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

You know the ones, oversized black border, inspirational pic. “Happy kitten is happy,” etc. Do a “Clippers homer picks are homer” poster, and I’ll pay, like, 7,000 internet bucks.
Um, you guys do remember a guy by the name of Blake Griffin?

Yes.
Even Blake Griffin couldn’t keep that sinking ship afloat.

Not that I totally disagree with you
but mocking a prediction that includes a presumption of the #1 overall pick playing and not mentioning it is an oversight.

yes, i remember him
he’s that sort of short 4 who is exceptionally strong. rebounds well against thinner college opponents but doesn’t get many boards outside of his area. almost refuses to play defense due to a pathological desire to not foul. currently has blown up knee cap.
how was he going to turn the clippers into a playoff team?
doesn’t that team still have davis, kaman and gordon? and would have had thornton the majority of the year?
it doesn’t sound like a playoff team at all.

Reading this column again
I realize he was wrong on basically EVERYTHING he predicted..
Numerically Blazers Edge is #25

I kind of agree with him about Nate
Maybe not on all the particulars, but I’m also not convinced that he is the right coach for this team anymore. I don’t know why there is so much hate for Simmons on this site, it’s an entertaining column. Is it because he was so right about Durant? And so far has been right about the pick (I hope time makes him wrong on that one)?

Its because he likes to get a rise out of Portland Fans
He will write stuff just to get Blazers fans to get up set and write about what Bill Simmons is doing and that makes his article read by more people.
Personally I am not angry at simmons I just generally ignore him

i don't hate simmons.
hating simmons for being a boston homer or for bashing portland is just like when maverick is in top gun and he’s about to talk to goose and then merlin comes up to him and…….

BEFORE THE INJURIES
How does a young team with noticeable talent drop 13 wins?
I'm gonna be the only A-hole that owns a Nic Batum jersey that doesn't live in France. Awesome.
I'm waiting to see Bill's response
Knowing him, he’ll write that losing Oden was a plus… :)
I am Spartacus and I approved this message
He did respond
He said something to the effect of “I was choosing between NO and Portland and knew one was going to suck badly. I chose the wrong one.”
He'd also stated
to the horde of blazer fans that bombarded him…
That he was making a decision as to which team over performed the year before and thus, based on other teams that did the same… possibly flounder.
I disagreed, but it was a logical way to look at it even if I thought he was dead wrong. I wouldn’t gloat until we’re at LEAST 5 over the prediction. Otherwise he’s pretty close. Much closer than those at 60 (stupid freaking injuries).
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Simmons isn’t an analyst, he’s an entertainer, it’s his job to generate interest in his column, so when he does a predictions column it’s going to have some stupid predictions. And if he’s lucky one or two of these predictions will come true and he will looks like a genius (which he will constantly remind everyone of… i.e. Durant over Oden or )Tyreke Evans will be terrible or Okafor over D. Howard
this sums it up well
Thrown 100 darts at a board while blindfolded and some of them will hit then just ignore the ones that don’t.
"In Batum's case he must realize he is very likely the first Blazer to successfully fight over a pick all season..."

Neither side will end up winning
After people started pushing Simmons on his 41 wins prediction, he said that if they win 41 or fewer Blazer fans had to change their twitter background to a photophopped Dre picture and if they won 54 or more he’d change it to something pro-Blazer. At the time I pointed out that wasn’t an over/under because there was a giant middle ground and most likely they’d finish in that area and nothing would happen. When push came to shove he believed they’d win somewhere between 42 and 53.
As for his other claims, he said we’d have trouble integrating all our parts and establishing a pecking order. Before players started dropping like flies the team did play awkwardly together. Before Oden got hurt there wasn’t enough room for him, Roy and Andre. When players got hurt everyone put their egos aside and just did whatever it took to win. We also traded away Blake and Outlaw, so there’s no way for an awkward minutes crunch at pg or sf anymore. His also claimed that Oden would be better than Durant. Yes, every GM at the time would have taken Oden, but how does that mean he’s wrong that Durant has become a better player? And he isn’t a Clippers fan. He goes to their games because he wants to watch as much basketball as he can. Honestly, Simmons is informed and knows what he’s talking about. I know he says stuff you don’t agree with and he uses jokes, but that doesn’t mean he’s an idiot. It’s so weird being the only Blazer fan who also likes Bill Simmons and doesn’t think he’s a moron who only lives to trash the Blazers.

naw
I think he’s come around a bit to the blazers. In the past he was HORRIBLY off base when the blazers were early rising. He’s become more educated about the blazers since then and I’ll disagree, but I can see where he’s coming from too and it’s from a better place than he had been in the past.
Blazer fans just get a little excited at times. Have you heard about their latest riot? Something about KP… not sure what exactly.

Blazers fans and really just all sports fans are hypersensitive. I really believe that he is just calling them as he sees them, but if he was reading the responses here (and worse elsewhere), I wouldn’t blame him at all for picking on Portland (or other active fanbases) intentionally.
I do enjoy Simmons, but I wish he would spread himself out more. Fantasy football, the Celtics and Kobe. That’s all he writes about. He was picked up as the ‘Boston Sports Guy,’ so I don’t begrudge him his loyalties, and in fact I appreciate them.

Take that Simmons!!
You were wrong about us only getting 41 wins…….
Too bad Oden is still an injury train, our front office is falling apart, we overpaid for Aldridge, and we will probably be bounced from the 1st round.
BUT AT LEAST WE PROVED SIMMONS WRONG!!! WOOT WOOOOOOT

Well said Benson, well said.
Maybe, just maybe, people hate Simmons because he’s right more than he’s wrong and it gets at their sensitive little underbellies.
