-------------------------------
Wizards Game Coverage: Recap | Media Row Report
-------------------------------
Normally when Blazersedge plays on TrueHoop I do a little dance. Nothing feels better than that.

Tonight, nothing could feel worse. Henry Abbott takes a long look at the Tom Penn firing and where it leaves Kevin Pritchard. He writes...
--------------------------------
"If they fire KP," said a comment from "iDea" on the Blazersedge blog, "after building the team back to being respectable and with a winning culture, it’ll be the last straw with most fans."

"Could you imagine the scene if KP left ... There might be an actual riot" writes "blazeraddict." Another commenter, "somanluna," quickly added: "I would be in it (the riot) It would absurd to let the man responsible for rebuilding the franchise to what it is today go at this point. He’s done so much and is very passionate about the team and doing what’s right for it so who would be better?"

"I think their fears are justified," says Warren LeGarie who represents both Pritchard and Penn, when asked if he could say anything to settle down Blazer fans. He offered no tonics. "We've been given no indication that this team sees Kevin as somebody who will be there on a long-term basis. All we've seen is them taking away people that Kevin feels are important to his ability to do his job successfully. ... I've been a Blazer fan from early on. I've been involved in some way with the team for many many years. I want them to be successful. They gave Kevin an unbelievably wonderful opportunity. But in order to make that opportunity work, he still needs to have people who believe in him around him, and people that he'd like to have, and that's certainly not the case anymore."

Perhaps the worst possible news for Blazer fans is that according to sources, last summer LeGarie became so convinced that the Blazers would not commit to Pritchard for the long haul that the agent has spent the season looking for another team to take on Pritchard and Penn. His concerns would seem to be validated, somewhat, by the firing of Penn.

The thought of it causing a fire to burn in my belly

Seriously, I’m so angry at even the hypothetical idea that real Blazer brass (the guys in Seattle) would dump or impair Pritchard…it’s enough to make me completely shun the organization.

They always say there’s a fine line between love and hate. The things you love the most are the things that can cause you the most pain. My reaction to something like this would be spitting, yelling, spiteful fury. I already hate the Seattle crew for even allowing these rumors to persist.

by lawduckfan on Mar 20, 2010 12:45 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

This is about as upset as I can remember being about basketball since Karl Malone tried to take Brian Grant’s teeth out when I was 10.

Catty organizational politics influencing decision-making, with the effect on the team on the court long since forgotten… I mean, this is Jail-Blazers-caliber stuff right here.

It’s probably not as bad as Abbott and Canzano’s sources are suggesting … but like you said, it’s pretty distressing that we’re even at this point.

If you remember

They called a foul on Grant on that play…My Oh My!!! Later, the League fined Malone for the well placed elbow.

chicken and egg

which came first?

The Vulcans (and by extension, Paul Allen) not being happy that LeGarie is making back-channel inquiries around the league about his client(s)

Pritchard and his agent not feeling that they’re going to get a long term contract extension from tehe Vulcans, which leads them to search for a new landing zone for KP, just in case things go sideways with the owner

the trueth will be more simple

I hope we find out the trueth this summer. I just doubt it’s some double edged conspiracy to clip the wings of KP.

More likely, the main man Mr. Allen simply didn’t like Penn very much and dumped him the day after season tickets were renewed. Simple and realistic. The kind of thing that happens everywhere, everyday.

by travis13 on Mar 20, 2010 2:23 AM PDT up reply actions

This whole deal smells to high heaven!

1) We all know that Canzano craves attention more than a junkie craves a fix. Canzano has the biggest platform of any sports journalist (using the term loosely) in the state. He is very good at spotting angles and figuring out how to create controversy. He is a cancer running amok, or to put it in different words, “he is good at what he does, but what he does is not good.”

2) Canzano took one or two juicy quotes from the agent and used it to tie Penn’s firing to Pritchard’s future.

3) The agent is likely to be leveraging this situation for the benefit of his clients. By suggesting this is about the Vulcans, it makes Penn look like a victim and creates public pressure for an extension for Pritchard.

4) Canzano claimed on Thursday that Adrian Wojnarowski was writing a piece about how Pritchard was on the hot seat, but no article has appeared. Given that Wojnarowski is widely viewed as having it in for Pritchard, you can bet that if he had any substantive information he would run with it. The fact that he hasn’t made a peep suggests that he can’t come up with anything.

5) we don’t have any real information about why Penn was fired, or as to the timing behind the dismissal.

To me, this all looks like Canzano and the agent using each other for their own ends. Canzano got a big story and the agent got to use the controversy to create pressure for and extension. Both seem to be playing with fire. The agent may be creating tension between Pritchard and the Vulcans even if none existed before.

The whole situation remains a mystery. The only thing I am sure about is that Paul Allen would have to be a complete idiot to fire KP. It would be a huge mistake from the basketball side, and a complete disaster with the fan base.

by upper left corner on Mar 20, 2010 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions   2 recs

Right on

And, Wojnarowski is a blow hard. He’s an opportunist who’ll use anonymous sources to slam anyone, and he doesn’t understand why that’s unethical. I can’t stand the guy. He pulled back from that KP piece because he realized at the last second that his argument, blaming KP for this, would be a stretch. Brian Smith’s interview with Larry Miller squashed a lot of the stupid rumors flying around, which Woj was going to rely on.

by travis13 on Mar 20, 2010 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Not cool

I was once spanked by a Hill aide for publishing what he’d said about an AP article
due out the next day (it did), because you don’t take away their right to annouce or not in advance of something that may or may not be published. Maybe wojo
said it was ok, but otherwise that’s bad form.

by torridjoe on Mar 20, 2010 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the quotes Ben used don't really show the actual point of the article, which only uses the BE quotes to show fan sentiment.

The bulk of the article is from Abbott’s interview with Larry Miller.

I can’t help but feel that if there was a good straightforward (non-political) reason to fire Tom Penn, it would already be out there. Dang it.

However, I also think Blazers leadership, even corporate leadership, is in no way stupid enough to even consider firing Kevin Pritchard. I sure hope so.

Oh, and I wanted to make the point that I don't think the article reflects badly on BE.

Also, of course the agent is going to cast doubt over KP’s job security – he’s a bit biased.

LeGarie was Drazen Petrovic's agent (as Dwight Jaynes mentioned the other day)

Drazen’s agent played “both sides against the middle” back in ‘90 to create tension re: Petro’s PT and eventually get him traded to NJ. (Fortunately, he’s not Rudy’s agent, this time around)

Ultimately, it’s not LeGarie who is creating the rift between KP and Allen, it’s the Vulcans. All speculation re: Pritchard’s future in Portland would cease with a contract extension being accepted by Kevin. Until that happens, there will be an undercurrent of antagonism between the fanbase in PDX and the ownership group in Seattle

Two4 usually your right on but come on now

are we really just going to blame the vulacan’s every time they have a tough negotiation with someone, it’s their job to get something at the best possible price, and after they had been burned so many times in the past with bad contracts its about time they stop just handing out money and acctually negotiate.

are you referring to Hedo and LMA's contracts?

I’m a lttle fuzzy at what you’re referring to

The Vulcans are easy targets. First of all they’re up in Seattle, and Portlanders have no trouble with feeling “adversarial” about the land of UW. Canzano has demonized them, and much of what we know about the Vulcans has come from reading or listening to John. Bean counters in general get a bad rap, they’re cold, Ivy-league “suits” who we associate with other negative stereotypes like lawyers and the IRS.

But let’s face it…Paul Allen is going to get what he wants. As much as we like KP and Nate they will not be employed by the Blazers one day longer than the owner thinks that they should be. If fans don’t like it, the best way to show your displeasure is stop supporting the team with your hard-earned money. Canzano has praised Blazer fans for refusing to support the team during the Jail-Blazer era, which in turn led to Allen making the painful transition through Patterson/Nash to KP.

Will the “KP era” last for another 5 years? I have no idea. All we know is that KP wants an extension and he hasn’t gotten one (yet) and that his friend was just fired for dubious reasons. If Paul Allen decides to replace KP at some point, then that’s his prerogative, I’m sure the fans won’t be consulted

Well, we've heard plenty of misdirection

not from Penn or Miller, of course. But Tom told a few reporters some of the reasons why he wasn’t fired (it wasn’t sexual harrassement, he denied looking into the Clipper’s job, etc) so while the true reasons remain hidden, they’re not completely unknown

The key to your interpretation is that there is actually a negotiation taking place.

However, according to KP’s agent, KP hasn’t been offered anything whatsoever and that’s not negotiation or playing hardball to get a good deal. You have to have a starting point from which to try and negotiate.

The agent is the annoying opportunist in this equation, thus my 'letter'.

And I agree with everything else you’re saying. However I will not be addressing a letter to the Vulcans. I won’t waste my time. If they’re were really as smart as they seem to think they are they would realize the ruthless and swift pursuit of profits resulted in the Whitsitt mentality. Typical boardroom short sightedness. That nearly destroyed the team completely. KP may be unorthodox, and his over use of the corporate buzzwords may be annoying, but you can’t argue with results. The Vulcans can go mind meld up a pole for all I care.

Blazer fans may be basketball savvy, but we aren't immune to drama.

I might say we are more susceptible to it because it’s a one pro team city. Either way, you’re right, the sky isn’t falling no matter what the truth about this situation might be. Maybe they think KP isn’t the right GM for a contending team as compared with a rebuilding team? Then again, maybe this is just a bunch of gossip and rumor.

Maybe they think KP isn’t the right GM for a contending team as compared with a rebuilding team?

This is my suspicion as well. The problem is, there’s no way to “prove it” one way or the other unless the team wins it all, and (unfortunately for KP) Paul Allen is not a patient man.

In business, sometimes a CEO is hired to get a business back on track, and then once the organization is on solid footing, he’s replaced by a new boss who will take risks and hopefully bring profit to the shareholders. I’m not saying it’s right (or that KP/Nate can’t “get the job done”) just that it’s a well-known operational cycle.

Were KP and Nate “stage 1” of Paul Allen’s plan to return to the finals? Does he have a new management team in mind to take the franchise to the next level? I don’t know, but I’m preparing myself for this possibility, because ultimately I want to see the team win another championship, and when that happens, who the GM/coach are won’t be my main focus

Fortunately, there's a Rose Garden with a lease

that binds the team in PDX for awhile

We can thank Paul Allen for that building, because without it “our” Blazers would likely be playing in another city.

But we can also pan Paul Allen for his fiscal irresponsibility from 1998-2004. This was the main reason the Vulcans were brought in (by Paul’s sister, perhaps?) to protect Paul from himself, and the overspending ways of the Blazer’s organization

I’ve heard Blazer fans say for years “well, it’s not my money” when discussing player contracts, but at some point the piper has to be paid. No one will be happy when the Sugar Daddy’s free spending ways come to an end. (Except for his sister and the Vulcans, assuming they’re happy about anything that’s Blazer-related) Steve Patterson tightened the belt and his henchmen downsized the front office, much to the dismay of many fine employees who had grown accustomed to “spending Paul Allen’s money” Now there’s a recession, the owner’s portfolio has been significantly reduced and there’s a new CBA with a potential work stoppage on the horizon

Is the good ship Blazer sailing into calm waters? Or is it time to batten down the hatches?

This would be very easy to ignore if it were simply Canzano making noise

and no one else affiliated KP, Penn or any other reporters were confirming bits and pieces of it.

Since there are others that have spoken up and obviously have given similar stories to other media people, that means that it isn’t simply Canzano making an ant hill look like Mt. Everest.

This will blow over when KP gets a contract and probably not before.

or a celebration parade

I was not in favor of Whitsitt’s “I’m not a chemistry major” philosophy of roster building, but the man took the team farther (for a longer period of time) than any other GM in team history. (Perhaps Bob has had time to reflect on the late ‘90s era, and would go about things differently if he was given the opportunity?) I’m not trying to be his apologist, I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if Allen rehired Trader Bob to be the Blazer’s GM. The man gets results, and “getting results” seems to be more important to Blazer ownership right now than warm and fuzzies. (I also heard someone mention during an interview this winter that Bob is looking to get back into the NBA, so take that for what it’s worth…)

I believe sold out arenas will no longer be happening should Whitsitt return. His name

and reputation proceed him. KP has done a great job and maybe there is someone out there who could do a better job BUT it is NOT Whitsitt. Talk about overpaying players…DARIUS MILES comes to mind. I believe this was during the Whitsitt era..and Shavilk….

by Natsthecat on Mar 20, 2010 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Paul Allen wanted Miles

and the max extension was given to Darius during the Patterson/Nash era

The RG was sold out while the team was winning (Whitsitt era) It wasn’t until the team that Bob assembled grew old and Whitsitt was fired that the fans got fed up with the Jail Blazers and stopped buying tickets

I’m not saying I’d prefer Trader Bob to return, I’m just steeling myself for the possibility. If Allen thinks Whitsitt is the best man to take the franchise back to the finals, he’ll rehire him and not worry what the fans think about KP. Through his ownership tenure Paul has shown everyone that he’s capable of doing just about anything if he thinks it’s going to get the team back to the top of the mountain. Many times those decisions have looked good in the short term only to turn sour. But when all’s said and done, the Blazers are PA’s toy, and we just pay for the privilege to watch them play

Likely result of this

Next yr’s Blazers are going to be the same as this yr’s Blazers.
You tend not to get rid of your capologist/contract guy if you’re planning on big trades or sisgnificant FA signings. Esp not before a Playoff run where you identify revealed weaknesses. And esp not when deciding to take your time finding a replacement during the small window of post-season trades.

the big news of this offseason

is Oden’s contract extension. Maybe Penn wasn’t needed to help negotiate that, but it really doesn’t matter now because he’s gone

If the Blazers screw up Greg’s deal and tick him (and Conley Sr) off to the point that they decide to play out his rookie contract and sign elsewhere, then we can kiss all those championship scenarios goodbye

If they fire Pritchard

I will personally boo Paul Allen. It might be unreasonable, but there is a reason that a guy with that much money cant build a championship organization, and its because him and his nerdy friends try to do too much and mess with things they know very little about.

On an unrelated note, did anybody see Dean Demopolous on Talkin Ball last night? MAN was that uncomfortable. You could hear a pin drop in that studio as he went into his diatribe about the fans and how much guts the team has. Just a rambling mess of nothing coming out of his mouth. Very very wierd.

that reads something like this

PAUL ALLEN: EXTEND KP NOW!

I doubt that sign makes it on the jumbotron, or that the RG staff will let it stay visible for very long

Ousting KP would be almost Apple-replacing-Steve-Jobs-with-a-guy-who-only-knows-how-to-sell-sugared-water stupid

That said, I don’t think the Vulcans will be that stupid. After all, they named themselves after logical beings.

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 9:56 AM PDT reply actions

In the end I think the agent and Abbott are not so much insinuating that KP will get fired, but that he gets fed up with his overseers and packs it in to go somewhere else where he has empty space to operate. A team like the Nets or Warriors comes to mind.

Jaynes speaks some sense sometimes. And this is one of those times.

Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.

Hope he doesn’t end up getting KP in hot water

Sounds like he already has. Well, KP chose his representative. He can either fire Legarie or ride it out and hope for the best. Here are a couple of quotes from Dwight’s article that I thought were interesting

And also understand that when Larry Miller is asked why Penn was fired and he says he cannot say, understand that HE CANNOT SAY. Some things like that happen in business — and when asked about specifics, they have no choice to but deny anything that could lead to an interpretation of what really happened. Often, when it comes to sudden dismissals like that one, there are serious legal repercussions if word gets out. Rather than to try to assign reasons to it, it might be better to just accept it and move on.

This is what happens with HR issues, both sides are given gag orders. You’ll get a heavy fine and/or legal action if you spil the beans. Canzano and A-Woj can poke and prod but if Penn and the Blazers are smart they’ll never let the truth see the light of day. Which leaves the rest of us to speculate, or to leave it alone. Eventually the lawyers hope it will blow over.

And I think it’s unwise of Pritchard to challenge that in any way. I even thought it was a little over the edge during training camp to go so public with the Patty Mills situation. You know what I’m talking about — he just about threw the owner under the bus when he made it known that Mills was Allen’s choice to make the roster rather than Ime Udoka. That’s getting into an area a lot of GMs wouldn’t go

A lot of Bedgers said “go ahead and let Paul Allen pick the 15th man, what harm can it do?” Then half the team went down with injuries. KP and Nate should’ve known what they were getting into when they signed on to work for a hands-on owner. Paul likes quick PGs and the team seems to be drafting 1 per season. KP and the scouts could have talked him out of it, but hey, it was the 4th pick of the day for Portland and the 55th selection overall…why not take a flier on Patty? Then Mills hurt his foot and his agent leveraged his roster spot into an NBA job in October, even though the Aussie only had a couple of days of actual on-court time in front of the Blazer coaches following the draft. Nate was not happy about the decision to keep Mills over Udoka and KP didn’t exactly hide his frustration in front of the media, either.

Is Pritchard having a little trouble getting a contract extension? I’m sure he is. So did Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. It seems to be the way this team operates. If you’re KP, you better just accept that or move on.

To try and mess with Allen’s control of the team is so dumb a man would deserve to be fired. And I just don’t think KP is that sort of guy. Or that dumb.

The thing that’s interesting to me is that Nate hasn’t pursued a LTC, even though his W-L record has improved over the last 3-4 years. He always says it’s because he wants to prove his worth, but now I’m wondering if he realizes that he’d just be beating his head up against the wall to even ask for a multi-year extension. The interview last month where Nate said he doesn’t hang pictures in his PF office so he can stick everything in a box and be out the door in 2 minutes (when he’s dismissed) is starting to make more sense. And now I’m wondering if KP has a similar mindset, especially after what transpired with Penn last week?

So much we don't know

None of us has any clue as to the following:

  • How stingy is PA with his money these days?
  • Does KP love this job and city?
  • How happy is PA with the roster and financial situation?
  • Was there a HR issue with Penn?
  • Do “The Vulcans” really matter?
  • Are Blazers insiders with true medical knowledge banking on an Oden Era?
  • What’s the relationship between PA and KP?

Sometimes, the simplest explanation is the most likely. Penn made a career limiting move, committed a fireable offense, or was just too much of a jerk to keep around. The Blazers can’t say anything for legal reasons. Blowhards speculate, etc.

Bottom line, it’s PA’s call. Why would he consider getting rid of KP? No one has answered that question in any capacity.

Why would he consider getting rid of KP? No one has answered that question in any capacity.

To do that would be to read the mind of PA, which none of us (I presume) has the ability to do. But we can look at previous decisions made by the owner, and speculate on his future actions. Its kind of like what stat geeks do with player stats, just on another (less-interesting) level

It seems obvious KP is gone this summer.

Take away what the columnist and the agent said and all the other crap – only pay attention to what Miller said:

- we’re not hiring the asst GM till this summer

- noone is here long-term, not even me

That’s one big vote of non-confidence for KP. He’s gone this summer, you can take that to the bank.

“This summer” = “After the playoffs, but before the draft”

They want everything focused on the playoffs right now. Depending on the performance there, things might get interesting again.

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you think it is entirely necessary to wait to hire a new assistant GM,

when according to the reaction of the team to Penn’s firing, it really doesn’t affect them?

"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."

by Seijeff on Mar 20, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh it will affect them since KP has always deflected such questions/issues. He’s not contract or salary cap guy, he’s a player evaluator. But the question is if he is allowed to bring in someone external (like Ben’s suggestion of the OKC assistant), or if they already have someone in place internally who until now had a similar role or was a consultant, or if Vulcan sends down someone from Seattle.

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

"This summer" = "After the playoffs, but before the draft"

Correct. Penn was not needed to scout college players (even though Tom was on the road doing this, on the owner’s dime, perhaps to round out his resume for a future GM job?) A “capologist” is most needed in staff meetings leading up to draft day, in the war room during the selection process (when deals are also being discussed) and during the free agency period in July-August. That’s 2-3 months out of the year. (And then again, near the trading deadline.)

I’m probably oversimplifying Penn’s role, but the only other thing we heard he was involved in was fundraising for St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis. I suspect this was on his own time (and on his own dime) but it’s not hard to see a potential dispute re: travel expenditures and possible conflicts of interest developing during his “down time” between draft day and the trading deadline

He was also the guy doing the nitty gritty details in the contract talks with LaMarcus and Brandon and probably Martell. But yeah, his focus was on CBA/salary cap and contract things, and most of that happens during the summer.
