Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Joelconomic Junk Sat March 20 Anno Domini 2010

1. Joel is a professional basketball player who coming back from a serious injury plans to play for at least three more years.  During the summer, he has two different contract options with his current team. The first is a three-year guaranteed contract (meaning he gets paid even if he is injured or cut from the team) that would pay him $5 million per year. The second contract is a one-year guaranteed contract that would pay him $7 million (the most he has ever made in a year), after which he could become a free agent and negotiate his next contract with any team in the league. Joel, being a good business person, has commissioned his agent to come up with a detailed statistical study of past performances by similar players. They concluded that, if he accepts the one-year contract:

i.  There is a 25% chance that he will be injured during the upcoming season and will never play again; and

ii. There is a 75% chance that he will be healthy AND play well enough this upcoming year to receive another two-year guaranteed contract for $7 million per year.

Joel decides to accept the one-year contract.

a. What do you know about his risk preferences, given the choice that he has made?  Explain how you know this in words or by using a utility of wealth graph.

b. What can you say for sure about the relative magnitude of Joel’s certainty equivalent?

(Hint: The differences would be larger/easier to see if you assume he makes less than 5 million in the first year for the risky option, but to make it more real-life I went with 7)

2. Joel's friend Kevin D., also a professional basketball player, owns a home in the "tornado alley" in Oklahoma that is worth $1 million. In any given year, he knows that there is a 1% chance his home will be hit by a tornado.  If it is, his home will be completely destroyed.

Kevin’s certainty equivalent of his uncertain prospect is $980,000.

a. Graph Kevin’s utility of wealth function and the expected value of his uncertain prospect.  Label his expected utility and his certainty equivalent.

b. What is the maximum Kevin will be willing to pay for full insurance of his house?  Explain.

c. Knowing about the tornado risk, will he re-sign with his current team?

3. Michael Jordan has a recurring dream (or nightmare). In this dream he lives in a world with only two goods:  Spalding basketballs and Gatorade. There are no casinos and no golf courses, which is tough. But he didn't draft Adam Morrison and Kwame Brown. Ahh. And luckily prices are cheap. Basketballs cost $10 each. Gatorade costs $2 per bottle.

Point A on the graph below represents Jordan’s optimal consumption bundle given these prices and his considerable (but undefined) income.

Jordangraph_medium

a.    Calculate Michael’s marginal rate of substitution of Gatorade for basketballs at point A, and explain in words what this number means.

b. Suppose now that in Michael's dream the manufacturer decides to drop the price of Gatorade to the bargain deal of $1/bottle.  Jordan’s new budget constraint is represented by the line BG. True or false: Jordan’s new optimum consumption bundle could fall between points B and C or between points F and G if either basketballs or Gatorade is an inferior good. Explain.

I mean, for a normal person she’s fine, but for a pop star?

Is she on Teen Boy’s minds? Lady Gaga? The one who does songs with “Puh” sounds?

But I do rememeber a time people were discussing Lady Gaga and Prez said she had an insane body… which, I didn’t see how she did, even on magazine covers which are heavily touched up, she’s a normal looking person.

She looks good in the Love Game video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mB0tP1I-14
That’s one of the few were her hair is pretty normal, and she hadn’t yet started covering herself with weird tattoos (or camouflaged them). That’s also the one were I thought she had some Kylie Minogue/Christina Aguilera potential. Out of the mentioned people, I even think she has the most talent aside from the heavy marketing she gets from her label.

She seems to perform and dance as good as them

I got no idea how much is her real voice, who produces the songs (that’s the real talent), or whether she really writes anything.

I wasn’t tryin’ to say she’s UGLY or something, just that she looks like a normal person who is in shape. I can’t say I am attracted to her mug, but I also like that there is a popstar who has a funny face.

I don't know the terminology

I shall do my best anyway.

Joel is giving up a certain $15 million for a 25% possibility of $7 million and a 75% possibility of $21 million.

This makes an average probable net income of $17.5 million. He is risking losing $8 million for the possible gain of $6 million, which would be a bad risk if it were not for the fact that the gain is three times as likely as the loss.

The break-even percentage is approximately 57%. If he had a 57% chance of getting a new contract, the probabilities work out equal to the certainty. The further the percentage goes above 57%, the greater the probable benefit compared to the risk.

He is willing to take a calculated risk that, on probabilities, will benefit him. I don’t know what a utility of wealth graph is.

He is wise to take the risk if he can afford the potential loss. If he is a professional basketball player who only has three years left and is making between $5-7 million, he is already rich, so he can afford the risk. Even if he weren’t already rich, just one year of $7 million should mean he could afford the risk, as most people can live comfortably for the rest of their life with that much money, even if the tax rate approaches 50%.

Joel should think about the possibility that he will play without injury but still not get as good of a contract, or that there will be a lockout and he won’t get a contract at all. He should not trust his agent for advice, because his agent will get a percentage of whatever contract Joel signs, so his agent is not a disinterested party. His agent’s personal risk preference could affect the advice he gives Joel.

I will give Joel unbiased advice for a fee. I don’t know anything about investments or chances of a new contract or anything, but I am unbiased and I know how to spend the fee once I get it.

2.b. Kevin D will pay the going market rate for insurance, without ever figuring out if it makes economic sense. He is a basketball player, not an economist or mathematician, and he did not complete a university degree. He will not understand this question any more than I do, but he will understand when the insurance broker tells him that the insurance will pay for his house if it is hit by a tornado, and he will be able to afford the insurance. He will buy it.

2.c. If Kevin D likes thunder, he will sign with his current team. His feelings about tornadoes will not come into it.

3.b. Are you sure Michael Jordan consumes basketballs? I would think that would cause constipation.

Poll. I am a teenage boy, and I already forgot Lady Gaga until you regrettably reminded me, sir. I shall now forget again as quickly I ever may do so.

I hope this post is ok for the junk drawer. I’ve never posted in one before.

Honored to have you here. I don’t want to reveal the solutions yet, but the Joel question goes in this direction. He is clearly willing to take some risk, and in economic terms you can actually show that ;)

First, I would generally address you as sir or ma’am, but I can’t do that to tinfoil in a junk drawer. Do you ever get crumpled up in here?

Second, everyone uses the word “fortnight”. As in, “A fortnight after losing to Italy in the Six Nations, Scotland battled England to a 15-15 draw.”

Third, I promise never to ask people to be nice to me because I’m a teenage girl. Never ever. But I might be nice to someone because she is a teenage girl, in the right circumstances. I am not stupid.

He said not to waste my time here

but it is Saturday, my studies are in good nick, the football is over for the day, and I decided the rugby was a bad idea. It looks like I was mistaken, I missed the best half of the match. We shall undoubtedly get crushed in the second half if I watch it, and perhaps if I don’t.

He did say some of the jokes weren’t quite so good in here, and if I pick up bad habits I shall have consequences. Not only that, Mum reviews my comments, so I have to be careful. My earlier “ambitious son” comment already stirred controversy.

Father did not warn me against TominHawaii, he warned me about him. There is an important difference.

Since the second half has started well, I shall now go watch the rugby.

ahhh I miss our old team
I just stand there, holding my notepad and recorder, and we’re staring at each other. He eventually storms past me to the shower, and while he’s gone Zach Randolph, a rookie then, leans in to me and says, "When ‘Sheed comes back, make sure you don’t have your back to him. He’ll sucker punch you." The great irony is that a month later Randolph sucker-punched Ruben Patterson during a practice breaking his eye socket. Someone was holding Patterson’s arms when Randolph threw the haymaker. There was a period of a few days after that incident where Randolph hid out at Dale Davis’ house because he feared that Patterson was going to try and shoot him.

LeGarie has a pretty bad run this season with his clients. Maybe he's pissed because of that?!

Mike Dunleavy: Fired as coach and GM
Tom Penn: Fired
Del Harris: Resigned after failing to get head coaching job with Nets
Kiki Vandeweghe: Future with Nets uncertain
George Karl: Only got 1 year contract extension, cancer diagnosis
Kevin Pritchard: No contract extension

His client Kurt Rambis landed the head coaching job with the Wolves, but reportedly he pissed off the Kings in the process. The last major deal he negotiated was probably D’Antoni to the Knicks, pissing off the Bulls in the process. Dude is everywhere, and not greatly liked by many it seems.

Mhm, good point. Maybe less PR/legal trouble, and avoiding the risk of players defecting to Europe or the DL in the future (though that number will remain small). And they wouldn’t have to pay the players hundreds of thousands.

I think it could be fixed for the rich sports. Problem is, then sports who don’t make money become even less attractive in comparison.

the point is that he has a pattern. Build up an ineligible program, leave them to be screwed by the NCAA, and then go on to do the same thing somewhere else.

Every coach would do it. NCAA Sanctions aren't something the coach can do. And if the program doesn't want the coach they shouldn't hire him.

The Protege shoe changed the game? How?

I like the idea of cheaper sports gear, and the shoes even look nice, but still when you have the option most people would still go with a “name brand”.

They woulda' done better if they had gotten someone aside from Al Harrington to sponsor them

That’s who they had, right?

I didn’t even think Starbury’s were bad. I forget what store they sold them at, but I went there once and I liked some of the shoes. They even had some with no logo, since I hate wearing logos.

The shoes I really woulda’ bought, though, were too skinny for my duck feet :-( I can’t wear hipster shoes.

Wide feet are nice at times but man

It is TOUGH to find shoes in a style I like. Gotta wear running shoes everywhere, or Vans (skater shoes tend to be wide), or shoes that hurt if I gotta wear dress shoes. They don’t hurt horribly, like what gals gotta go through with heels, but I squeeze my feet in and it pours over the shoe sole.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 20, 2010 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, a foot doctor he went to told him he could do surgery on his feet

so that he could wear regular shoes but then his feet would hurt all the time instead of just when he wears shoes. We had a pair of boots made that cost about $800 but the toes have turned in even more, actually it’s the whole front of his feet from the toe joint. He only wears the shoes when he absolutely has to and he can’t drive while he’s wearing them because the shoes are so huge. He has very big feet anyway. He’s always either barefoot or wearing cheap sandals.

So, if Norsk wishes to be correct

He’ll change his answer to David Niven, since that was 1967, and Lazenby’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is 1969. And both were real releases by real studios after the character was well established, and the Lazenby one only came out because they had some rights dispute going on.

I’m on my 3rd xbox 360, and I like the machine and how games and dvds run on it, but DAMMIT this one is dying too. So dumb!

Every once in a while it can’t read the disc mid-game and I gotta start over. So, if I’m doing real good, I save mid-game, which is a hassle.

Much of Moonraker naturally plays in space or training for space and stuff like that. And before that in Brazil and I think France he has no opportunity to drive a car. He gets thrown out of an ambulance and rides the cable car, but he doesn’t drive a car.

But this one is totally different

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Ahh

I won’t dispute your findings, but I read The Man With the Golden Gun and have seen the movie, and basically all it has in common at ALL is that the bad guy has a golden gun. And the character name (Scaramanga) is the same.

The rest, the whole story, location, goals, characters, are all different.

And that came out in 1974!

BUT I WON’T DISPUTE, I’m jus’ sayin’!

Through my quickie research because I was cheating with your quiz, “The Spy Who Loved Me” was the first/only Bond book written in 1st person, from the POV of the lady who got loved by a Spy.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 20, 2010 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Most of the book version of the Man with the Golden Gun

Is descriptions of Bond showering in sweaty Jamaica, first taking a hot shower to get clean, then a cold shower to cool down. Repeat for 20 pages.

He actually finds the bad guy by being, I think, in the same bar as him and asking if he needs help and the guy says “yes, you look like you could be a good assistant” and so Bond becomes the guy’s secretary. It is completely stupid and lazy.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 20, 2010 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Could be. Maybe they also declared it that way since for the Spy it’s known that Fleming himself didn’t like the novel and said only the title should be used. And that was written in 62.

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That's what Hemingway said for TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT!

I forget what producer it was, but he told Hemingway he could make a great movie from his worst novel, and to Hemingway, his worst novel was To Have and Have Not (which I mostly really like).

So they used the title and instead of making it about a smuggler going from Cuba and Florida, they made it a Casablanca clone where Bogart was a smuggler helping the French Resistance.

But basically the Tibetan Book of the Dead is a primer for the Psychadelic experience which it considers an analog of the death experience. I had already done lots of trips before I read it and when I did, it completely cracked open the whole experience for me and after that I could completely control my journey’s. In fact I became a sort of guide for people for awhile because I could so readily discern what they were going through, and had the self-control to help them through it even while I was dosed.

Actors who originally were planned/asked to star in a movie or movie series but declined

Will Smith – Neo in Matrix

Cary Grant – James Bond

Bette Davis – Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind

Sean Connery – Gandalf, Lord of the Ring

Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Nick Nolte and Christopher Walken – Han Solo, Star Wars

And many more…

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2010 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

Connery was offered a monster deal for LotR too.

He declined, he was enjoying retirement too much.

by Timmay! on Mar 20, 2010 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he'd have to live in New Zealand for a few years

He didn’t wanna, reportedly. But they always intended on having him be Gandalf, and so did everyone in the world! It was a no brainer.

But, Ian McKellen was great I thought. Maybe better, because he is GANDALF and not SEAN CONNERY as GANDALF.

What is Connery’s last hit?

I have a friend who loved L of E G

I thought it sucked as well, and told him he was a big wiener. But then I’m not into Hero’s or any of the newer hero type shows. Don’t even like Fringe. I did like a couple of the Batman movies, especially the last one.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

It was just so boring (L of EG)

I like GOOD superhero stuff… the last 2 Batman movies, for example. I watched the first season of Heroes and it was fine but a lot like The Watchmen. The 2nd season was even worse than people warned me, and they warned me it was awful.

I’m not sure what makes a fantasy type show click with me.

So far I still like FlashFoward and am hoping I still like V when it comes back.
Just saw Justified – good premiere.
I like Good Wife, but it’s probably a little slow for some.
I think I like a change of pace as I go though the week, so a certain show might not be that great but if it’s different, the variety is welcomed.
Psych, one of my favorite cornball shows sucked the last 3 episodes.

Saw Planet of the Apes last week for the second time. I’m pretty sure I didn’t like that the first time, but that wasn’t too bad after all – The one with Mark Wahlberg in 2001.

I think Lee is recognizable amongst movie fans

Most might not remember him as a Bond villain, or the famous Hammer horror pictures.

TRIVIA: Music trivia time.

Only four artists (solo or band) have had number one hits more than 23 years apart.

This includes any time a solo artist spent with a band, not just solo hits. And it’s not necessarily their only number one hits, just the two farthest apart.

Artist 1: August 1965 to March 1999
Artist 2: January 1970 to September 1995
Artist 3: February 1973 to October 1997
Artist 4: February 1964 to January 1988

(In case you ask, this is for the Billboard Hot 100 chart)

It was expected to be gigantic

But everyone was disappointed and it only hit number 9 or so.

by Timmay! on Mar 20, 2010 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Funny story.

It was one of the biggest hits of that whole year, 1990.

One problem: The only available single was for the original version was a 45 (a record, to you young folks). Meanwhile, to capitalize on it, they released a newly-sung version of the song on cassette.

So all the radio stations played the original version, and all the stores sold the new version. But since they were different versions, the sales and airplay did not apply to each others’ songs.

Which led to a very memorable chart moment: The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” reached the #13 spot, and the #19 spot. At the same time. It was utterly absurd.

If the two versions had been combined, it would have probably spent multiple weeks at #1, and it might have been in the top 10 songs of the entire year.

they really get after it on the press. WVU’s guards better be ready.

I like UW’s chances against Missouri quite a bit. Romar is just dying to go with a four-guard lineup, and it would be advantageous against the press.

I agree, you should be pulling hard for Mizzou tomorrow.

WVU is not unbeatable either, but they would be very tough for UW.

I do think that the swagger UW is playing with right now is very scary for any opposition. They are completely confident and playing like a top ten team. Bryan-Amaning’s PER is suddenly skyrocketing, and he’s actually playing nice help defense.

Holiday, Amaning, Pondexter… so many long, athletic guys on defense.

Now, I don’t expect them to win another game… but they could very easily do so.

they were a preseason top 20 team right? they are finally playing like it, when it matters.

yeah, the game against Georgetown at the start of the year was super-hyped. Then, we sucked for two months and lost twice to USC.

But, it’s still an elite team in terms of talent. New Mexico was a good matchup because the Huskies were just too fast and too long. West Virginia scares me.

if Cornell somehow wins tomorrow...

there is a possibility that Cornell hockey will be playing in the NCAA regional in Albany Friday and hopefully Saturday (brackets revealed tomorrow at 11:30 eastern/8:30 pacific, ESPN2) AND the hoops regional Thursday (and, if the miraculous happens Saturday) in Cuse.

If this somehow happens, I will have no choice but to at least consider making the trip out to upstate NY. No guarantees, and its still pretty unlikely Cornell wins tomorrow.

(two more shameless Andy Bernard-esque plugs below)

(Cornell women’s hockey plays Minnesota-Duluth for the title tomorrow at 1 eastern/10 pacific but I think that’s only available online and I will probably not see more than a little bit of)

(Cornell wrestling finished 2nd in the country today)

Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

that's an amazing synergy..

and this win isn’t impossible.. how more improbable was kansas losing to niu than cornell beating wisci would be? idk.. but i really like where this dance seems to be going..

i was actually thinking about how Cornell lacrosse was doing after seeing a bit of the end of a Syracuse win over johnhopkins..

yeah, winning 1 game in the hoops tourney tops pretty much anything else Cornell could do, for me anyway, though a hockey nat’l title would be close.

sweet 16 in hoops would top a hockey nat’l title for me.

for you, i bet Cuse making the final 4 in hoops is way awesomer than even a title in anything else.

From one of the guys at Blazer Broadcasting (who posts on another forum)

About the problems with the feed:

“We know about it. The signal is leaving our truck fine, it is when it goes back to the RG and being sent out from there, the problem happens.”

They’re actively trying to track it down. That explains why it only happens in Portland.

i gotta mention this: I heard that a lot of the markets that initially had the Cornell-Temple game Friday got switched to another game when Cornell went up big.

Cornell alum Jeremy Schaap via twitter:

Never thought I’d see the day when CBS would switch from Cornell in first round because game was a blowout—in Big Red’s favor.

As someone who vividly remembers watching decisive home losses to Quinnipiac and Colgate in a near empty gym, this has been absolutely surreal, win or lose against the Badgers.

by Cablinasian on Mar 21, 2010 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, I believed this would be Cornell’s best team ever (not saying much) because everyone was back and there are so many Seniors in the rotation. Winning 1 game was always the goal and the hope, and I believed there was a chance, but the odds were against it, certainly. Beating St. Johns at MSG was cool, almost winning @ Kansas was nuts and Friday was incredible. I might pass out if Cornell wins today..
