Oden Update?
Anyone heard anything new about Oden's recovery progress?
Back after he was injured this latest time, I recall his agent saying they were going to look at his balance, gait and other dimensions (keep your dirty jokes to yourself, please ;) to try to figure out what they could do to mitigate any further injuries.
I'm anxious to hear if they found anything. Any chance he'll be back for the playoffs? Why am I asking so many questions? Because I am curious, and I am a few words shy of 75 words.

It may be best to keep things quiet.
A playoff rotation of Oden and Camby might get some people too excited. (Not me though : > ).

I have heard "unofficially" he may be back for the playoffs
I know a couple people that have some pretty good ins with the Zers, and word has it that he might be back for the playoffs. They are intentionally NOT saying that and getting everyone too excited, considering the amount of hype/excitement and resulting dissapointment that has already happened this year with all the injuries.
But if you look at the medical timeline, it’s actually very realistic that he might be able to come back. Now, that doesn’t take into account for conditioning, strength level, etc., but physically he would be “healed” and ready to go by then…so we’ll see

Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
I thought it was supposed to take about 6-8 weeks for the bone itself to heal, but since he had to stay off his left leg for a couple months the atrophy would be pretty bad. That leaves 8-10 weeks before the playoffs start for him to rehab and get his strength back. I don’t know if that’s enough time, and an out of shape Greg coming back to early isn’t worth the high risk of injury.
But then again, he is a young guy that could get back in good enough shape to play 12-18 minutes backing up Camby. Greg coming back for the playoffs would be huge for the team and his progress as a player, not to mention his self-esteem. We’ll just have to wait and see, but if by the beginning of April there’s still no word, then it’s not happening. Anyway, Dave put it best in the live chat when he said, “I’m not holding my breath.”

Even with 12-18 min the other teams are gonna have to guard him
Which means they’re gonna have to put in whoever is biggest on they’re bench, effectively taking away minutes against our more consistent line-up (featuring LA+Camby)
My point is, even with a few minutes the mere presence of Oden will force teams to react to us rather than force us to play their game.
this is what I know
Oden went down the first week of December (the 5th in the Houston game), and had surgery just a couple days after the injury (the 7th). Surgery usually allows you to start rehab much sooner than without. You’re right that it is 6-8 weeks for bone to heal, but with athletes they usually give 10-12 weeks to ensure healing, especially when it’s a leg injury and the sport is basketball. So that would put “healing” being done right about now.
However, you can start rehab long before that window is done. Word has it that he was already rehabbing and working it out in the pool on January 15th, which was just 5-6 weeks after surgery. So if we was able to start moving and rehabbing with little/no weight on it in mid-January, I’m sure that it has progressed a lot in the last month and a half.
So as of now, the first week of March, his bone and everything should be completely healed, and he should be almost 2 months into rehab. The last regular season game is April 13th, so that’s about 5-6 weeks out from now.
SO, based on the medical timeline he could definitely be ready to go for the playoffs, with the one caveat being his conditioning/strength, etc. The reason they haven’t even opened it up as a possibility yet is that they haven’t determined if he will be in the athletic shape to play yet. I think if he’s getting close someone will spot him in drills and workouts, and that will be a good indication of the possibility of his return

Agreed
That’s why I hope if Greg does have some “structural” or balance issues with his body, they find a way to keep it from causing him further injury.
I don't think it's structural or balance
The pre-daft workouts said his bones were “pristine” remember.

the first injury that required microsurgery WASN'T from getting up off of the couch.
Have some mid-west connections that say otherwise. When I heard what occurred I was happy to know it wasn’t something like getting up off of the couch. Rather an outdoor activity.
Wasn't microfracture a preventative surgery?

Why is is that every time I watch the other teams TV broadcast when we play
their announcer say the “Blazer people” are telling them he could be back for the playoffs? This must be one or both of the Mikes or Wheels/Tone. But I’ve never even heard them talk about it. Do they not want to jinx it or get our hopes up?
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
overheard
by my friend (buffet server in the media room) Mike Rice saying that Oden had a good chance of making the playoffs. This was a few months ago, and Mike was also saying that Batum would be back in a 3 weeks (he was) LA in a few days (he was) and Rudy back in a week (he was). I hope just as hard as I have all season that Mike Rice knows what he’s talking about in regards to GO! (blazers..)
if we really on Mike Rice knowing what he is talking about we're in trouble!
he called DeJuan Blair “Juwan Blair” on the air during the Minny game

Well...
I’ve also heard him call Roy, Randon. He calls Oden “Odom” all the time. I can’t think of another announcer who messes up names more.

I love Rice, he makes games worth listening too. I often mute the TV when a games on ESPN, or especially when Reggie Miller is on.

I've been wondering about this, the fact that he's not on the sidelines at the games
if it wasn’t some stealth plan to get him back while keeping it under the radar. I know, too much conspiracy theory. But it would be cool if it were true.
What a story that'd be:
Greg Oden runs out of the tunnel right before the first playoff game, completely shocking everyone because no one had even seen or heard anything about him or his possible return.

only problem with this is we will open on the road
Thus, we either get no crowd/emotional lift from Oden coming out of the tunnel in game one
OR
He doesn’t play until game 3 and makes a Reed-esque appearance.
All seems a bit manufactured to me. If he’s ready, just play him game one. no need to turn it into an event – especially on the road.

i think trying to nail down which game he will debut is a little premature
by rip_city_swagger on Mar 2, 2010 1:28 PM PST up reply actions
missing my point entirely
I’m not trying to predict his debut. I’m saying if he’s going to be ready for game 3, then he will have been ready for game 1, which means either he will debut on the road, negating any “coming down the tunnel” effect, OR we will foolishly hold him out the first two games to manufacture that effect.

It's been tough finding Oden Info
Wheels gave an update on Oden during the Feb. 15 edition of courtside, but the podcast of that show never showed up on the courtside page, and I only caught the very end of the segment.
USA Today reported on Feb 16 that Oden is walking on a treadmill.
On Feb. 23 Oden’s Facebook page (I’m not sure if it’s real) said “rehab is going well”
The Portland Tribune asked Pritchard about Oden on Feb 25, and Pritchard said “He’s pushing hard, as hard as I’ve ever seen him working.”
If nothing else,
he will be a beast when he comes back next year.
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
If he is healthy then throw him out on the court.
whent he doctor says he is 100% then im pretty sure that means he is as 100% as he ever will be. Conditioning wise, they can deicide if he is going to be benefial if given playtime. I would still prefer him over howard.

screw 100%
how many playas play 75+ percent. they blame their performance on that anyway. pad him up and leave him downcourt and pair him with brandon. brandon only plays half court anyway. greg doesnt need to be running up and down the court. not alot of other bigs do. let canby work the defensive boards. i really want to see aldridge paired up with batum and cunningham.
Gotta love the Blazer outlook
We have been through so much this season and in the past all anyone can do is be positive. Me personally, I’m not expecting him back this season. We did this with Brandon for what seemed like an eternity. That only brought about frustration and anger towards the training staff. We went out and got Camby because no one is banking on Greg to return. At this point Greg returning would be a most pleasant surprise, but as I said I’m not banking on it.
We went out and got Camby because no one is banking on Greg to return.
The stated reason we picked up Camby was to help us get into the playoffs. Even given a best case scenario, Greg would not have been a big part of our playoff push this year whether he makes it back or not. If all goes as it should Greg will be back in time for the playoffs and possibly even a little earlier. How much help he can give us is another question. I just want to see him prove some doubters wrong by making it back healthy this year!
88
Easy now....
I meant that we didn’t expect Greg to be back this season, whether you took that word for word as not ever coming back that wasn’t the intention. Why else would we go out and get an older veteran center. Obviously we weren’t looking to have Camby be a long term solution. Even Pritchard has stated that they were going to take the utmost care on bringing Greg back and were in no way shape or form going to bring him back too early.
As for silencing the doubters, as Mike Rice would say “sure, sure”. I’m all for it. I never said I doubted his heart and determination, to do that would be foolish based solely on his work ethic and drive to get healthy in the past for the Blazers. I just feel it has been an emotionally draining season with all the injuries and I have learned this year to not get too worked up with things we can’t influence or change. Things like this in the past would kill me and I would get myself way too worked up over it. If Greg comes back this season even for a very short period, great. I was just trying to give my new found perspective to others that might not take bad news, or not so preferable news in stride.
I like the sound of your new perspective
And I think that this has been a great year all things considered. We still have some exciting possibilities ahead and one of those is the combination of Greg and Marcus playing together, this year. Not saying it is going to happen. Just hopeful it will happen.
As far as the doubters I was referring to, these are people who want to be right more than they want Greg to succeed. It does not sound like that description applies to you—besides it is not worth getting get too worked up about anyway. It is just like KP just said in a radio interview, Greg needs to have that goal in front of him as he rehabs—right now it is his dream as well.

Regarding his gait
Does anyone know if he’s already using custom shoes/orthotics? I’m just a rec player and it’s pretty amazing the difference I’ll have from one pair of basketball shoes to another, even with my custom insoles.
very true.
I had a pair of KG shoes that looked awesome, but were HORRIBLE for basketball, gave me nothing but blisters.
by In Walks Rudy on Mar 2, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions
Orthotics aren't really going to do much for him.
The scope of what orthotics actually help with is pretty small, and should only be really used as “crutches” until the underlying problem is fixed.
I'd love for him to come back but...
Would hate for him to miss class at PSU.

that's good to hear.
now that greg knows what his potential is (as he’s finally experienced it 1st hand this last time around) and has a better grasp as to what to expect from his play and from others – i could see how this would provide him with a little more motivation to get back, and get back right.

If I remember right a player must have joined the roster by a certain date to be playoff eligible (no problem there) and the injury reserve can only be shuffled before every round.
why do we even continue to have these problems with him
