Gavin Dawson appreciation thread.
This post is to thank Peoples Champ. First time I heard him was like 3 years ago, when he was on AM radio saturday show. I liked him right away when I heard him talk about Blazers. Even the AM radio waves could not distort his bright crisp voice. What I liked most about Gavin was that he is stariatght forward and is not PC, but thats not everything what he is good at. He was honest and had a good intuition about things, and could also speak out his thoughts in ways that some of us only dream about. So Champ we wish you luck in your career, and I know you bleed black, white, and red, and that wont change. Champ Dawson if you happen to read this post, stop by and give us some details on what radio station you will be on so we could listen to you on the internet. All in all, wish you the best, and happy for you bro, cuz you got a voice of a hero, and deep soul with a brilliant mind. You can come join us when we celebrate on broadway our championship in couple of years. Everybody lets make Peoples Champ know how we appreciate him, and write down your wishes for him.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

im glad to see this fanshot.
the MSP with gavin and chad was entertaining as hell. i cant believe hes leaving for texas of all places, but GL champ!
Gavin is cool as hell
I was bummed when I heard he was leaving. I didn’t always agree with him, but I loved listening to him. I wish him well, the MSP will definitely NOT be the same with Old Man Jaynes and Chad.

For a very long time on Portland Sports Radio
Gavin was the only on-air personality who knew as much or more than his average listener about our lone professional sports franchise and the league it belongs to. Even though that has changed somewhat with the Game (specifically the Wheels mid-day crew), Dawson has still been an informative and entertaining voice on the morning airways. He will not be easy to replace, and his absence will be felt.

me
i was drooling over roy and aldridge, although foye was on that list too. Everyone in my office was for the Stache and I just kept shaking my head. If your reason is “he’s local” then you’re freaking wrong.
To be fair though… i was also drooling over webster over Chris Paul. I was delusional though (if only we had a three point shooter to complement Zach.)

lol I was just thinking the other morning how ridiculous he is
I can understand how having to spend time with Dwight that early in the morning might mess your head up a little bit but the guy honestly just doesn’t know a lot about sports in general.
(I don’t claim to be an expert but I don’t work in the sports field)

p.s. how bad must Dwight's finances be that he gets up that early to spend time with those two loons?

by the way I expect Dawson to last about five seconds in Dallas
i have a feeling their sports fan actually demand content
but hey at least he’s not here anymore

Personally
I hated the fake “ultra hipp” tone that both him and “the body” tried so hard at. Complete fail. Peoples champ? Hardly. Maybe we can dump clownzano on the same Texas station.
by blazinagain on Mar 19, 2010 10:00 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
I hated it too.
They both seem to try so hard to be cool. Cracking open beer in the morning is not cool. Teaming up against a guy who was paying his dues and reporting sports when you were a zygote is not cool. Calling yourself the “People’s Champ” is not cool.
I did like the fact that they talked about the Blazers in the mornings.
Have fun in Texas.
Then the entire arena froze as a primal, bloodthirsty shriek echoed through the seats and rafters. Beer vendors dropped their glasses, fans cowered, whistles fell out of refs' mouths, Coach Nate fell backwards into his seat, Monty Williams grew hair, watched it turn grey, and then sobbed as it fell out again all in an instant, and the Suns' blue and orange road uniforms suddenly included a conspicuous amount of yellow. B-Rex had arrived. And he was angry.
I like Gavin...
but I will never forgive him for trying to push the worst Blazer topic ever. “Who is the hottest current Blazer?” was the question. Jeeesh. They picked that topic right after the draft a couple of years ago. LOTS of stuff to talk about and he came up with that crappy topic? I remember screaming at my radio.
No loss...
People’s memories must be short. No comments about how he constantly tried to stir up controversy where none exists? No comments about him saying we should have drafted Durant instead of Oden?
Only reason Gavin sounded good at all because he was paired with the People’s Chump, the un-listenable CIP (chump in portland)..
we should have drafted Durant instead of Oden
nothing wrong with the truth
Ball handling and dribbling are my strongest weaknesses."—David Thompson
The "truth" is still out there, waiting to be determined....
Talk to me about truth when either the Blunder or the Blazers win a Championship. Until then, the “truth” is pretty relative.
I hope we will yet see GO hoisting a golden trophy……
……and even if we don’t, I hate “after the fact” second guessing. We have seen enough from Greg to know how good he was going to become. If his body fails and he never gets there, that doesn’t mean that drafting him was a mistake.
Dominant centers are the rarest and the most valuable players in the game, that is the truth.

Good luck Gavin. You have been talking Blazers for a while now before it was cool to do so. I'm really pissed that one of the MSP hosts is leaving and it's not CIP. Seriously, that guy has got to go.
Gavin? Why oh why can’t you take “Chump in Portland” with you.

Dallas kind of suits him.

I thought the Peoples Champ was a goofy nickname, but I thought he was a great host and I wish him nothing but the best in Dallas.
And I’m glad CIP is staying, that guy is freaking hilarious (even when he’s being kind of a d-bag which is quite often) and he makes a nice yin and yang combination with Dwight.
2010-11 dream lineup: Oden/LMA/Batum/Roy/Dre; Okafor/Freeland/Cunningham/Webster/JB/Pendy/Mills.

Never liked him but wish him luck
He was some kind of Jim Rome wannabee, and his little sidekick is worse. Glad he’s off the airwaves, sad it’ll mean more of CIP (Crappy in Portland). Wish to heck MSP could find some real talent.
Thanks Gavin
Who else was talking Blazers during my 15 minute commute every morning? What am I going to listen to now, National Public Radio? The last MSP show I heard was Thursday, I believe. Gavin was talking about drinking 15 Coors Lights a day, every day, while on vacation in Hawaii, and explaining to Dwight that “it’s only a drinking problem if it affects your life negatively”. Hilarious! Now, we all know that equals maybe 4 real beers and a few gallons of pure Rocky mountain water each day, but still. I’m not sure how the MSP will survive without Gavin. Chad’s best shtick is the “smooth sports update” he brings out on occasion, but you can’t do that every day. Should’ve known that something was up when Dwight became a regular feature on the show, and they gave him the ‘godfather’ nickname…..

Gavin was better then CIP, I admit that, and better isn’t a good adjective to get an accurate description of his value to morning sports radio. The only credit I can serve to Gavin is that I know he didn’t always support some of the outrageous antics spewed by that soapdish of an intellect next to him. Too bad he maintained the verve of a baby in a wet diaper in dealing with it all. Maybe he’ll have better luck in Texas. Maybe if he dumps the People’s Champ tag and gets real. Maybe.

Sports guys should be judged by their knowledge and insight into sport
On that basis, I don’t think we need to light to many candles at Gavin’s departure. The man was wrong about more things than I can remember.
More of the triumph of style over substance…….

I never liked his show
I hated all the fake gangster talk. He always came across as a Jim Rome want to be. I’m not 15 years old, I don’t need my sports talk to have “attitude”. I prefer either a knowledgeable sports talk host and someone who doesn’t take themselves to seriously.
I remember one morning I was flipping channels and heard him say Rudy was the 2nd most valuable member of the Blazers and the gap between him and Brandon was getting smaller. From then on I knew that guy didn’t know what he was talking about.

My first impression of Gavin and CIP's morning show was
the frat boy show. My last impression was – the frat boy show. Still and all, even frat boys can produce plenty of laughs and make the occassional good point. I wish them good fortune.

I am really happy for Gavin
and even happier for the future of Portland sports radio. Gavin may have been a really nice guy, but he’s not somebody I enjoy listening to. I wish him the best at his new job in Texas.
I liked Gavin a lot too. He was definitely my favorite Portland sports radio guy. Best of luck bro.

He was definitely my favorite on air personality.
This news sucks.
Maybe he's not that bad after all
I listened to a few minutes of the show this morning on the way to work to see what it is like without Gavin and man does it suck. It wasn’t good before but now it’s downright awful. What with CIP calling Dwight James “Father” like he’s a priest or something. Then Antonio Harvey said Paul Allen has lost close to a half a billion dollars on the blazers. Enough to buy a house for every portland resident. There are over 500,000 living within the Portland city limits. Does that mean houses only cost $1,000 in Portland? I couldn’t beleive no one corrected him. I guess the show’s good for some MST3000 style humor.

I've had the opportunity to meet Gavin and hang with him on several occasions
The one thing that struck me about him as being cool was I first met him at Bedge Night @ The Agency, and then when our paths crossed about 6 months later, he remembered my name. I thought that was pretty cool.
Yes, his on-air personality may have been somewhat obnoxious and at times contentious, but when you take the mic from the man he was a very cool guy, and really let you know that he bleeds red and black.
I wish him the best.
Blazers win!
"(Andre Miller) got a steal of a Brandon Rush pass in the backcourt and with a clear path to the hoop looked like he was actually going to dunk it with those 64-year-old legs. I believe that in true Darryl Dawkins fashion he was going to dub it the Miller-Time Pop-Top Rammin' Jammin' That's-For-TiH-and-his-Spammin' Thunderdawg Special. Unfortunately it got blocked. He did get to go to the line off the play at least. So he settled for calling the free throws "TiH Cheap Shots"." - Dave after a 102-79 beatdown of the Indiana Pacers
the MSP occasionally has good guests like Dave
other than that it’s un-listenable garbage. as long as people worth listening to like Dave still make appearances i don’t think anyone has lost anything.
