Around SBN: Celtics, Heat Score On Purpose In Super Sunday Wins

Live Chat: 9:35 p.m. Pacific

Since we're on the eve of the 70th game of the season and have had a long layoff it's probably time for a live chat before we slide down the final slope towards the playoffs.  I'll be here to talk Blazers, blogging, and whatever alongside you.

Okie-dokie, the Diet Dr. Pepper is sitting at the ready and comments are now open.  Welcome!

whats happening Dave

Considering our improved record of recent and assuming we have no more injuries (which I don’t), are we a dark horse this year?

Yes

Caffeine builds up in the system and then causes kidney stones, you can also get it from drinking too much Coffee. Sad to say but I know of a High School Student that Has a kidney stone from too much Coffee.

Of course

every person is different. You might be one of the lucky few who can drink massive amounts of Dr Pepper and Coffee and never get a kidney stone. Kind of like life long smokers never getting lung cancer but those who smoked for 6 months get it when they are 30.

Nope

We’re still a lame horse, unfortunately. The seed will be too low, the opponent too ready, the holes in the roster, its continuity, and its execution too obvious. It’s quite unlikely we’ll get out of the first round.

Keep in mind that Portland’s recent surge has come against poor-defending, non-playoff teams. The games against Utah, Boston, and Denver are probably more indicative of what awaits us.

Having been to the last 10 games

Better them than us…the Blazers held them to 9 points in the 4th quarter last week but GS can get hot like that and beat anyone on a given night

That's a good question

The Phoenix game isn’t important in itself but it’ll be the first chance to see them against a decent team in a couple weeks. I would guess we’ll lose. But really what’s important is to not bottom out over the next couple of weeks. If we can keep the win-loss record reasonable in this stretch the playoffs are assured.

that despite whatever stat disparity will no doubt exist through the years, in a head-to-head matchup a 7-footer with a huge frame and a chip on his shoulder has as much chance to dominate a series as a scorer. Based on Larry Miller's comments about Penn's firing being an "isolated incident"

I’m leaning towards a conflict of interest violation. No one connected to the organization can comment directly about it for legal reasons.

KP’s job is not in jeopardy, but he can’t be pleased with the decision, either

And because the Vulcans have a bad reputation for past pettiness, they’ll get the blame from most fans

but Penn has to be culpable. For what, we will probably never know

ROY

It seems like for Roy to get into that elite class of players, he needs to score more. But, he only shoots 16 times a game, while guys like wade and kobe shoot at least 20. If he takes 4 more shots a game, and lets just say he makes 2 of those. His points per game get to 26.

The more pointed question

is “for whom”. I have warmed more and more to a Rudy-Roy-Nic combination for the Blazers in another year or two. But the frontcourt has to be rock-solid defensively to make that happen.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

wait?

When did Rudy develop a left hand?

by nikolokolus on Mar 18, 2010 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of holes

in the blazers-

other than the teams defense do you think we have personnel / position issues?

What are these holes you speak of?

by Jeffe Portland on Mar 18, 2010 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

Execution, size, continuity, toughness

right now anyway. If you defend the Blazers hard they slow way down and have trouble scoring. Only Camby stands between them and oblivion in the middle and playoff teams will be able to account for Camby. They aren’t solid every night because they haven’t played together every night for 70 games like most of the contenders have. They are still slight and can get pushed to the perimeter easily. A good playoff opponent will take advantage of all four. And we’re not likely to get a seed that allows us to meet anything less than a good playoff opponent.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Like Camby said, who cares if Roy misses a shot. That just means shoot again and again… and again!

what about our over seas talent

Do you think they will ever crack this roster? Do you think camby will resign? Do we even really need to be in this years draft?

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

by lyfefindsaway on Mar 18, 2010 9:57 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I don't foresee any of our current overseas guys

making a huge impact except maybe Claver. Him I don’t know much about.

Camby re-signing depends as much on Camby as on us. He’ll need a very attractive offer to think about it. I don’t know that the Blazers make that offer.

We do need to keep building assets through the draft. We might be trading some of the guys you’re banking on to make those draftees non-essential.

It depends what happens ahead of him. You want to talk about moving Bayless and not getting (or converting) another point guard? Maybe he’ll get a chance. But he’s got to fight through a bunch of guys for minutes right now so it’s probably safer to project him as the third point guard at best.

Hi Dave!

Hope you’re enjoying the march madness.

Couple questions. Greg was hyped so much in college because of his athleticism and agility as a 7 footer. Do you see the knees injuries as limiting his explosiveness in the long term? I think since he’s 22 it won’t effect him as much, but I don’t know alot about injuries.

You’ve also talked about a possible Rudy-Brandon-Nic backcourt in the future. Could you elaborate? When you include Nic, are you suggesting he could bring the ball up and setup the offense? Or just play the two-guard? I’m not sold on him playing anything other than SF, but I trust your judgment. Why do you like it so much?

The 2012-13 NBA season: a dynasty begins.

by OVERTIME on Mar 18, 2010 10:05 PM PDT reply actions

OK

I’m not sure Greg will ever play as freely as he did in college but remember the NBA isn’t necessarily about doing 32 things well, it’s about doing 3 things in unstoppable fashion. Between the rebounds on both ends and the blocks, Greg’s already got 3. I think he can also learn enough footwork to earn him double-team attention or a dunk. That would be 4. And he’ll be unstoppable most nights on all of them. If he cracks the opponent’s dam with those everyone else will be able to pour in after him.

I foresee at least an experiment where the Blazers do without the traditional point guard. Any of those three, with a little more seasoning, should be able to bring the ball up the court. A couple of them could do it on a dead run. After that you probably give the ball to Rudy or Brandon if you get stuck in the halfcourt. I don’t know if it will work, but I’d like to see it tried.

I think a few people might be interested in working for the Blazers as long as management can keep out of its own way. There’s plenty of action here and the team should be on an upswing. Depends on for what

At a certain point in the season ANYONE would have worked here. He would have allowed a bit more offensive diversity, perhaps played nicely alongside Rudy. But I never liked his defense much and I was concerned that he wouldn’t be utilized fully, which at his price would be a crime. I think he would have fit, but I don’t think he would have made us much better, if at all.

Not making the playoffs would have been devastating. If we’re in then this season has been a success…maybe an incredible success given the injuries. This was a crazy year

The team obviously did not meet expectations. There may have been other issues, but the overwhelming issue was the injury bug monster.

We’re all hoping for a great year next year, but there’s always the chance that it won’t happen. What would be the likely culprits for next year if it is a letdown? Injuries aside. That’s too easy.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

On the subject of tuning out the coach

Nate has done a good job helping to turn the Blazers into a winning team. While he gets credit for that, there are also some doubts about whether he is the right coach to take the team from winning to championship caliber. The rough start to the year didn’t help him any. Thoughts?

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Mar 18, 2010 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably something that can't be shown

except by trial and error. I think he deserves the chance to try but if the Blazers decided to let him go I’d assume they know something I don’t. I think letting him go before this year would have been a crime. I think the team needs to perform quite well next year or he’s on the hot seat.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Most underrated Blazer by the general fanbase?

RUDY > MJ
Thank you KP

by Rudiculous on Mar 18, 2010 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

Hard to find one anymore

because the fanbase is diverse and has much more access than they used to so nowadays players tend to be overrated more than underrated. From the amount of discussion versus contribution ratio it might be Roy. Aldridge would qualify for a guy people complain about who still helps us out a lot. Howard?

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Again each one could be at different times

I’d say Rudy and Bayless vie for the honor most consistently. Both have potential. Each is a good player. But the expectations are so high for each. Camby could easily slip into that category if he performs well. People can get too excited about Joel’s future sometimes too, even though I love the guy on this team.

I pretty much wrote off the season as far as expectations from the summer. All I’ve wanted since then to get me through it is MOAR REX. Trading Blake was excellent for that. I’d still like to see more minutes, but I’ll admit, it’s hard to find more backup guard minutes on this team.

by Bakasama on Mar 18, 2010 10:28 PM PDT reply actions

It used to be almost nil

Przybilla’s situation may have changed that somewhat. But don’t forget that the Blazers are still watching the bottom line financially and Camby will want to be paid well for a while in order to stay, considering that Portland’s ideal would be to have him play 12 minutes per game behind Oden eventually and their back-up plan could include Przybilla. I wonder if a sign-and-trade wouldn’t be a possibility.

He will if he stays

But the Blazers’ future should include starters playing the vast majority of those minutes. Oden probably can’t next year, but after that I’m hoping for mid-30’s from him.

I think Cunningham and Pendergraph

can handle some of the spot minutes. If Camby stays it’ll be as a 4-5. But I think the Blazers are angling towards (praying for?) a time when the starters play 36-39 minutes and you can get away with a 9-12 minute guy in reserve.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

If he's cleared, he suits up

If he’s not, he doesn’t. I don’t think the decision goes any deeper than that. But I don’t think he’ll be cleared without reservation before the playoffs are done.

by Jeffe Portland on Mar 18, 2010 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

The team had to learn to play percentage ball

in order to make it so far. Those were the basics the young guys had to develop as they built around Roy. But now they should have it down and it’s time to expand. I expected that to happen more this year, starting with the integration of Oden. The team got blown apart at the seams and just keeping heads above water was all we could manage. I expect more next season. I don’t think Nate could have done much more than he already has. However I want to see what he does when that opportunity is available.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

In order to get easier points

against the best teams we need to defend them better and stop taking the ball out of the net so much. Oden does have to help with that. If you can get a little more speed and motion going then the easy points will come. We have to make the switch from a young team whose defense gets better when its offense clicks to a veteran team who generates offense via the defense.

Dave, in a typical week

how many non-Blazer NBA games do you watch?

by palaiti on Mar 18, 2010 10:47 PM PDT reply actions

Depends on the upcoming opponents and how well I know them

Anywhere from 4 to 12 or more, I suppose. I try to watch each upcoming team a few times before we play them.

by Dave on Mar 18, 2010 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I have been thinking about this...

Blazersedge has done a lot of good for fans and the last two years sent students to the game. I can see us at Blazersedge doing more “charitable” work. For instance the TImbers Army just set up another fan group whose complete focus is to promote soccer and do community work. I can imagine a Blazersedge community work day and such. I know you have so little time to offer that but it is just an idea.

Dave, I don't know if you followed the U of O football player shenanigans

Or if you already said anything about it. If you did, I missed it.

It’s hard to know what those guys were thinking, but it seems like more than a coincidence that so much skulduggery is coming out of one organization. It appears they are having a culture problem. Is it a recruiting thing? A culture of letting things slide? Plain bad luck that a few guys all do/get caught doing something stupid at the same time?

by dan_the_man on Mar 18, 2010 11:20 PM PDT reply actions

I believe that incidents

can perpetuate a culture. I’m not sure the bad culture is pre-existing. More likely it’s that nobody bothered to monitor these things. But you get a few incidents like this and if you don’t stop it, pretty soon you’re THAT program. Then it’s deeply-seeded and only a complete flushing will get it out. Where the U of O has been before now isn’t as important as how they react during the next couple of years.
