John Canzano Blazers news...

I have no clue as to what he is going to be talking about but if you aren't listening to 95.5 the game (3/17) John Canzano says he has some Blazers news that is going to mean big changes in the franchise.  Tune in before 3:20 to hear the news.  It caught my interest with all of the stuff that has happened backstage and Paul Allens health there are many things this could mean.

drama… and it means nothing.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

My prediction: the Vulcans are still pulling the strings in Blazer land!

Oh gosh, what huge news! Canzano will then say we’re heading back to the Jail Blazer era because they were behind that and will remake things in that image.

One interesting note already dropped...

Canzano mentioned that he talked with Penn last night and pressed him for details. He said Penn started to explain what happened and then broke down and asked to keep his original comments (shocked at firing, no details) on the record. Canzano says he trusts Penn.

Haha...

First he said he would drop his big news around 3:20.

Now he says 3:35.

Now it’s no longer HUGE news that will change the Blazers’ course. Now it’s “a bit of news, that when you hear it, you will say, ‘What?’” I maintain, it’s going to be news that the Vulcans are getting more involved with the day-to-day operations of the Blazers. Canzano thinks the Vulcans are scum, so their involvement is huge in his mind. That’s my guess.

I’d say he’s right about the Vulcans being scum.

If they were inserting themselves into the day to day, that could have consequences that suck.

I agree...

But it’s not really earth shattering news if they were involved in Penn’s firing. If Canzano tries to conclude that they’re going to run the day-to-day show from that, then he’s just ginning up a story. If he gets proof they’re calling the shots at the draft or with trades, then I’m interested.

Apparently this is coming from KP’s agent (who is also Penn’s agent). Looks like A Woj might be right. Interesting.

If that’s true, it’s big news.

I seriously can’t stand the man. He gives no reasonable explanation for why this would happen, other than that “Vulcans aren’t basketball people”. Add to that the comments A Woj found about awkwardness between Penn and KP, there seems to be no reason why KP would have his head on the chopping block.

Canzano's story:

+ Since PA got sick again, the Vulcans have been trying to justify their existence.
+ They’re doing this by attacking KP and Penn re: 1) Oden v. Durant, 2) the Hedo/Miller fiasco this summer, and 3) KP’s backing of Penn’s raise last year.
+ The firing of Penn was the warning shot over KP’s bow b/c Penn was KP’s guy.

If Canzano is right, PA needs to sack the Vulcans. Firing Penn during the season, if there’s nothing more to it, was really stupid given that he can join another organization and take his knowledge of the Blazers’ preliminary draft board with him. Never mind the fact that KP and Penn were largely responsible for the team’s turn around.

That said, it’s Canzano, and his source is Penn’s agent, so I’m not sure I’d put much stock in any of this.

Well, IF JC's story is true, the timing make sense.

The Vulcan’s are all about business. They don’t know anything about basketball. From a business stand point (a hard-ball, dirty business stand point), you wait to make this move until after the fans re-up their season tickets, just like they did.

by DC Blazer on Mar 17, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe

but you wouldn’t think the Vulcans would necessarily connect the Penn firing with Blazer fans deciding whether or not to renew their season tickets

but I agree that the bean counters wouldn’t take the timing of the basketball season or KP’s pre-draft preparations into account when showing Tom the door

like others have speculated, the suddeness of the dismissal reeks of an HR violation. Not a sexual harrassment complaint (Quick ruled that out) but perhaps a conflict of interest dispute. That would qualify as a “philosophical difference”

I can't see why ...

KP would be on the chopping block either but if it did happen it would be a HUGE mistake. If KP would be fired for the GO pick then I think the firing of KP would be a much larger mistake than the pick was. (not that I think the pick was a mistake.)

This just sounds like the eldest son of a powerful leader coming in and trying to use daddys power while he is sick. I hope Allen is healthy enough to keep the Vulcans in check and prevent them from messing things up. KP is a basketball guy and he is the right guy for the job in portland for a long time to come.

John Canzano is the biggest tool bag

Yes I am a Duck so I already have that biased against him, but I am growing tired of Canzano. I watched Chip Kelly spank him on national TV and he relentlessly saying Kelly isn’t taking control of the team, and it’s spiraling out of control, then turning around after the suspensions and praising Kelly for the job he has done. He’s in the same boat as Skip Bayless to me. Just says stuff for the shock value of it, then will about face and completely change his stance just to not look stupid.

Think about it. The most likely story here is that Penn was, at least in part, fired for improperly fluffing up his bargaining stance with the Blazers. If KP’s agent is making this up to do the same for KP, that would be really stupid.

That does not even include the question he asked to elicit the quote. So there isn’t even a context to put the answer in. Just a thought:

There’s a legitimate critcism in that: KP inexcusably failed to correctly identify and evaluate the severity of Greg Oden’s pre-existing medical problems.

KP failed, despite the RLEC and massive cap space, to land an upper level player via trade or free agency.

KP was able at the trade deadline to salvage the season by acquiring Camby only with several million dollars of Vulcan’s/Mr. Allen’s cash and two expiring contracts; in effect being bailed out by Mr. Allen.

Who can say if his successes are outweighed by the failures? But you might see that Pritchard’s superiors may have a legitimate grievance with Pritchard’s decision making. Our current success has been purchased at a high cost

gotta cry bogus on this one:

All of the reported available offers for RLEC last year appear in hindsight to have been ones that we should be quite glad we DIDN’T agree to.

Additionally, there were very few upper level free agents available last summer. Our ill-fated pursuit of Hedo aside, it appears we got the best bang for our buck that we possibly could have in signing Andre Miller.

I’d say KP did the best he could with RLEC/cap space given what he had to work with.

Not all of them. Andre Miller was available in Feb 2009 and adding him to Portland’s roster last spring could’ve made the difference in the series against Houston

We learned (after the fact) that there was interest in Miller from Portland’s side, but we have no way of knowing what Blazer players the 76’ers were interested in (besides RLEC, of course)

Allen has forked over more money just to move up in the draft. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it only cost Portland the difference in ECs between Camby and Blake+Oultlaw (around 1.5 mil) rather than maximum the NBA allows (3 mil) to complete that deal.

KP is not an MD.

And it’s not like it was so black and white that the diagnosis was “inexcusable.” You’ve often got to perform an MRI or ‘scope it to see what’s inside and the spot with the flaking was very small.

Doctors aren’t magic after all, that criticize is in no way legitimate and even less so when applied to KP.

If you got Fired on the spot

wouldn’t you think it had more to do with an IT, HR, or Fireable Offense issue, especially considering that Penn only says good things about the orginization after he has been given the boot, I am betting Penn did something Stupid and had to be terminated and he is saying nothing but good things about the orginization because he doesn’t want the Blazers spilling the beans on why he really got fired. As for KP’s contract negotiation his contract is not up for a couple years so they got a little time to figure it out.

Poor strategy - we need Vulcan to be supportive

I have read that Vulcan is run by PA’s sister (and heir?). Turning a return on investment is a big step to remaining viable long-term. Fan anger leading to reduced sales will threaten that viability.

PA himself is bald. I think the Allen clan has thin heir.

I heard a snippet of news (and that’s all I’ve heard)

that Penn really rubbed Allen the wrong way at some point during the Drafting of Oden.
Has there been anything on that. Or is that something totally unrelated. Because I’m almost sure it was brought up in the context of this current breaking news.

I apologize up front if this has been covered; I’ve only had about 5 minutes for the Blazers the last 2-3 days. So yes, if a link is handy, point me the way.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

that was more Canzano

and the obvious response is…if this was true, then why would Allen give Penn a promotion/raise 10 months ago? If Paul was torqued at Tom, he would’ve just told him “good luck with the Minnesota job, remember to dress warm”

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
