John Canzano Blazers news...
I have no clue as to what he is going to be talking about but if you aren't listening to 95.5 the game (3/17) John Canzano says he has some Blazers news that is going to mean big changes in the franchise. Tune in before 3:20 to hear the news. It caught my interest with all of the stuff that has happened backstage and Paul Allens health there are many things this could mean.

i'm going with
drama… and it means nothing.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

it's possible there's news
but i really really really really dislike his drama mongering even if that is his job. Just not a fan of shows/people like that.

I agree about the drama...
he is building this up to be HUGE ! It better be something real.
My prediction: the Vulcans are still pulling the strings in Blazer land!
Oh gosh, what huge news! Canzano will then say we’re heading back to the Jail Blazer era because they were behind that and will remake things in that image.

Brilliant!
Canzano is nothing if not a clever attention whore. Stirring the pot seems to be his calling in life.

One interesting note already dropped...
Canzano mentioned that he talked with Penn last night and pressed him for details. He said Penn started to explain what happened and then broke down and asked to keep his original comments (shocked at firing, no details) on the record. Canzano says he trusts Penn.

Oh, and he's going to post the "shocking news" on Oregon Live as well. So no need to listen and wait as he drags this out.

All his talk is currently focusing on what the Vulcans might have been thinking...

I’m sure it was “logical”.

So if anyone has anything interesting, which is unlikely. Feel free to post.

My guess
is that if he actually HAD any news… it’d still take him two hours to get to the point.

Haha...
First he said he would drop his big news around 3:20.
Now he says 3:35.
Now it’s no longer HUGE news that will change the Blazers’ course. Now it’s “a bit of news, that when you hear it, you will say, ‘What?’” I maintain, it’s going to be news that the Vulcans are getting more involved with the day-to-day operations of the Blazers. Canzano thinks the Vulcans are scum, so their involvement is huge in his mind. That’s my guess.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Based on th elittle bit here and there you hear
I’d say he’s right about the Vulcans being scum.
If they were inserting themselves into the day to day, that could have consequences that suck.

I agree...
But it’s not really earth shattering news if they were involved in Penn’s firing. If Canzano tries to conclude that they’re going to run the day-to-day show from that, then he’s just ginning up a story. If he gets proof they’re calling the shots at the draft or with trades, then I’m interested.

The article is up on OLive
It is the most aweful peace of fear mongering I have ever read from him. Worse than the patriotism bs.
The big news: "The Vulcans are hovering and Kevin Pritchard could be next"
I’ll be the first to admit. If that’s true, it’s big news.
Apparently this is coming from KP’s agent (who is also Penn’s agent). Looks like A Woj might be right. Interesting.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
BTW
Canzano claims to have evidence that the T-Wolves made an offer to Penn last year.

"Lebron may sign with Blazers"
If that’s true, it’s big news.
I seriously can’t stand the man. He gives no reasonable explanation for why this would happen, other than that “Vulcans aren’t basketball people”. Add to that the comments A Woj found about awkwardness between Penn and KP, there seems to be no reason why KP would have his head on the chopping block.
A Woj also said KP could be in trouble, too - right?
Maybe that was someone else.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
well
IF that’s true and they’re firing Penn then possibly KP because of a grudge… IF they don’t have hte patience to wait another two years for everything to really bloom…
Then some people are about to ruin something that could have been very cool. Patience is a virtue and something to lacking in todays world.

Canzano's story:
+ Since PA got sick again, the Vulcans have been trying to justify their existence.
+ They’re doing this by attacking KP and Penn re: 1) Oden v. Durant, 2) the Hedo/Miller fiasco this summer, and 3) KP’s backing of Penn’s raise last year.
+ The firing of Penn was the warning shot over KP’s bow b/c Penn was KP’s guy.
If Canzano is right, PA needs to sack the Vulcans. Firing Penn during the season, if there’s nothing more to it, was really stupid given that he can join another organization and take his knowledge of the Blazers’ preliminary draft board with him. Never mind the fact that KP and Penn were largely responsible for the team’s turn around.
That said, it’s Canzano, and his source is Penn’s agent, so I’m not sure I’d put much stock in any of this.

Agreed on the bad decision/timing.

Well, IF JC's story is true, the timing make sense.
The Vulcan’s are all about business. They don’t know anything about basketball. From a business stand point (a hard-ball, dirty business stand point), you wait to make this move until after the fans re-up their season tickets, just like they did.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
maybe
but you wouldn’t think the Vulcans would necessarily connect the Penn firing with Blazer fans deciding whether or not to renew their season tickets
but I agree that the bean counters wouldn’t take the timing of the basketball season or KP’s pre-draft preparations into account when showing Tom the door
like others have speculated, the suddeness of the dismissal reeks of an HR violation. Not a sexual harrassment complaint (Quick ruled that out) but perhaps a conflict of interest dispute. That would qualify as a “philosophical difference”
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I can't see why ...
KP would be on the chopping block either but if it did happen it would be a HUGE mistake. If KP would be fired for the GO pick then I think the firing of KP would be a much larger mistake than the pick was. (not that I think the pick was a mistake.)
This just sounds like the eldest son of a powerful leader coming in and trying to use daddys power while he is sick. I hope Allen is healthy enough to keep the Vulcans in check and prevent them from messing things up. KP is a basketball guy and he is the right guy for the job in portland for a long time to come.
John Canzano is the biggest tool bag
Yes I am a Duck so I already have that biased against him, but I am growing tired of Canzano. I watched Chip Kelly spank him on national TV and he relentlessly saying Kelly isn’t taking control of the team, and it’s spiraling out of control, then turning around after the suspensions and praising Kelly for the job he has done. He’s in the same boat as Skip Bayless to me. Just says stuff for the shock value of it, then will about face and completely change his stance just to not look stupid.
"Sometimes I catch myself watching him and he's shooting floaters all-net. And just to watch how he's talking trash. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. Rudy's a competitor." - Brandon Roy
Yea, but he's also KP's agent.
If he’s making up this story, KP ought to be really pissed. Then again, he could be feeding false intel to KP too.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
that's the point
his agent is indirectly raising KP’s value by subtly hinting that he could be available in the market, right when he’s up for a new contract.
Agree with that
but it makes me wonder where KP’s head is at in terms of the organization. If he feels like decisions that impact the basketball product/operations are being made over his head, that could lead to real fricition

It is just..
Canzano being canzano, he loves these moments where there is big news and he can put his spin on it, loves to act like he has some inside info. He can never be proven wrong either because he can say it was a bad source, or just never happened.
I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden
I typically agree, but he actually has some evidence this time.
It’s KP & Penn’s agent, so that’s a bit suspect, but still, this is more intel than JC typically has.
It can’t be completely ignored.

a persons agent is a horrible source
they are only paid if the people they represent make more money. which is what their sole purpose is.
I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden
Typically, yes...
but in this case, he could get KP in trouble with the team, I would guess.
Think about it. The most likely story here is that Penn was, at least in part, fired for improperly fluffing up his bargaining stance with the Blazers. If KP’s agent is making this up to do the same for KP, that would be really stupid.

KP says this was Allen's decision?
Canzano has been saying KP isn’t towing the company line and is saying this was Allen’s decision. Do we know where he’s getting that from? Is that valid intel?

No matter how much I tinker with the filters
a little spam still manages to get through! Must be Google’s fault, somehow.
He's got one quote from the agent
That does not even include the question he asked to elicit the quote. So there isn’t even a context to put the answer in. My bet is KP gets a contract extension and then we get a self serving Canzano article about the the Blazers brass " came to their senses and finally did the right thing" somehow alluding to how he made it happen.
Just a thought:
There’s a legitimate critcism in that: KP inexcusably failed to correctly identify and evaluate the severity of Greg Oden’s pre-existing medical problems.
KP failed, despite the RLEC and massive cap space, to land an upper level player via trade or free agency.
KP was able at the trade deadline to salvage the season by acquiring Camby only with several million dollars of Vulcan’s/Mr. Allen’s cash and two expiring contracts; in effect being bailed out by Mr. Allen.
Who can say if his successes are outweighed by the failures? But you might see that Pritchard’s superiors may have a legitimate grievance with Pritchard’s decision making. Our current success has been purchased at a high cost
gotta cry bogus on this one:
KP failed, despite the RLEC and massive cap space, to land an upper level player via trade or free agency
All of the reported available offers for RLEC last year appear in hindsight to have been ones that we should be quite glad we DIDN’T agree to.
Additionally, there were very few upper level free agents available last summer. Our ill-fated pursuit of Hedo aside, it appears we got the best bang for our buck that we possibly could have in signing Andre Miller.
I’d say KP did the best he could with RLEC/cap space given what he had to work with.

Also note KP has brought Blazers under the salary cap which is a reported Vulcan priority
"Their length," he said. "Aldridge is a tough matchup for us. Roy's a very talented ball player, an All-Star player. Miller is just an incredibly savvy point guard with what he's able to do out there on the floor. You throw in their shooters who have size and are able to see over things. They understand where they are as a ball club." - Kurt Rambis
All of the reported available offers for RLEC last year appear in hindsight to have been ones that we should be quite glad we DIDN’T agree to.
Not all of them. Andre Miller was available in Feb 2009 and adding him to Portland’s roster last spring could’ve made the difference in the series against Houston
We learned (after the fact) that there was interest in Miller from Portland’s side, but we have no way of knowing what Blazer players the 76’ers were interested in (besides RLEC, of course)

None of these seem like failures on KP to me.
There’s a legitimate critcism in that: KP inexcusably failed to correctly identify and evaluate the severity of Greg Oden’s pre-existing medical problems.
That sounds like something that should be placed on the doctors, not KP. Unless he was clearly told about the problems and chose to ignore them, which I highly doubt.
KP failed, despite the RLEC and massive cap space, to land an upper level player via trade or free agency.
douglast nailed this one above

Paul Allen could find a few million dollars under his couch cushions, the return was clearly worth the cost. The blazers might not have made the playoffs without Camby.
RUDY > MJ
Thank you KP
Paul Allen could find a few million dollars under his couch cushions, the return was clearly worth the cost.
Allen has forked over more money just to move up in the draft. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it only cost Portland the difference in ECs between Camby and Blake+Oultlaw (around 1.5 mil) rather than maximum the NBA allows (3 mil) to complete that deal.

KP is not an MD.
And it’s not like it was so black and white that the diagnosis was “inexcusable.” You’ve often got to perform an MRI or ‘scope it to see what’s inside and the spot with the flaking was very small.
Doctors aren’t magic after all, that criticize is in no way legitimate and even less so when applied to KP.

Quick thought...
What if this is some kind of ownership chronyism fallout from the Milsap deal? Maybe Darius Miles and not being able to clear him off the cap has somehing to do with Penn’s firing?

If you got Fired on the spot
wouldn’t you think it had more to do with an IT, HR, or Fireable Offense issue, especially considering that Penn only says good things about the orginization after he has been given the boot, I am betting Penn did something Stupid and had to be terminated and he is saying nothing but good things about the orginization because he doesn’t want the Blazers spilling the beans on why he really got fired. As for KP’s contract negotiation his contract is not up for a couple years so they got a little time to figure it out.
"Get three superstars and then fill the roster with guys willing to go through a wall to win." - KP
Yeah I still think there is a HUGE possibility that Penn did something really egregious, like a sexual harassment complaint that was swept under the rug or him somehow stealing.

sexual harrassment has already been ruled out
but if it is an HR violation (like conflict of interest) both parties may be legally bound not to discuss it
Perhaps Penn’s NBA-wide fundraising activity for St. Jude’s crossed over the line? Just a guess

I agree completely.
There didn’t seem to be any anger from Penn over being fired…sadness actually. My guess is that he did something that left the organization no chance and he knew it. It happens sometimes.
Canzano is crap usually, but I do like at least that he is bashing Vulcan, and rallying the non diehard fans and fairweather fans against Vulcan.
"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden
Poor strategy - we need Vulcan to be supportive
I have read that Vulcan is run by PA’s sister (and heir?). Turning a return on investment is a big step to remaining viable long-term. Fan anger leading to reduced sales will threaten that viability.

I fear for the future of NBA basketball in Portland…there is no city/state strategy to prevent a Sonics-like departure other than the RG lease

I'd be surprised if PA's sister has a lot of heir

I heard a snippet of news (and that’s all I’ve heard)
that Penn really rubbed Allen the wrong way at some point during the Drafting of Oden.
Has there been anything on that. Or is that something totally unrelated. Because I’m almost sure it was brought up in the context of this current breaking news.
I apologize up front if this has been covered; I’ve only had about 5 minutes for the Blazers the last 2-3 days. So yes, if a link is handy, point me the way.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
that was more Canzano
and the obvious response is…if this was true, then why would Allen give Penn a promotion/raise 10 months ago? If Paul was torqued at Tom, he would’ve just told him “good luck with the Minnesota job, remember to dress warm”
