Jason Quick and Kenny Vance on Wheels at work...was KP's job in jeopardy?
Jason Quick doesn't know why Penn was fired. He said it was sad that there's been so much negative stuff being written about Tom, because he's not a bad guy
Vance said that he was told in Vegas last summer (by an "NBA exec") that Allen was now questioning the front office's decision to draft Oden instead of Durant. Kenny also repeated that this exec told him that Paul felt that Portland was "a year behind" in their development towards a championship and that KP's job security during the offseason was not as solid as fans/media might expect.
Quick said this was news to him and very concerning. Vance promised to reveal his "hole card" to Jason off the air.
Follow the link for the podcast, which should be "up" shortly. It was hour 1 during the first segment (on air 30-45 minutes ago)
I fully suspect Vance to be raked across the coals by Bedgers and his "credibility" questioned. As for me...let's just say that considering past behavior by Allen during his team ownership, this news should not be all that surprising.

no kidding. Every time they are going on about the burgers and meals that all sound like calorie
laden bombs, I picture Kenny and think…what are you DOING???
Yeah, having seen the guy in person, hearing this burger promotion thing is mildly horrifying.
KV has a death wish, I think.
Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

He also used to be on 1080 the fan before it went to 910 - or was it 1520 back then?
He took over the popular afternoon show after Mychael Thompson & Kermit Washington left. Or he may have been there with Mychael after Kermit left. It’s hard to remember, it was awhile ago…
Patty Mills - PG of the future. Book it.
used to be a blazers beat writer
And he thinks hes got some amazing credibility. Which is not the case.
Lover of everything Batum.

i don't buy the thing about drafting Oden
you don’t think Paul Allen had at least some say/input in the #1 pick in the draft? He likely diverted to KP and his staff on the actual decision and analysis, but when you own the franchise and you have a #1 pick, you have to at least state your opinion.
Sure, there is that part in all of us connected to the Blazers that wonders what the team would be like with Durant, with him scoring the way he is this year, and Oden hurt, but at the beginning of the year when Oden was dominating we looked like a pretty darn good team and definitely a contender..they were talking about us as the #1 or #2 seed in the West

So it was Penn's fault that Oden has been hurt so much!!
I knew it had to be some ones fault.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

a lot of stuff gets said at summer league. any time you get all the executives together there’s a lot of jockeying. that kind of statement could easily have been made but that doesn’t give it validity.
i wouldn’t doubt that paul allen is anxious for instant results but i have a hard time believing that kp’s job was in any serious jeopardy (for basketball reasons).
Interestingly, KP's agent is saying KP is in danger too.
Whatever the truth is, something is seriously rotten behind the scenes in Blazer-land. We’ve always had the fishy stories about Nate’s willingness to hang around. And now this. Who knows what the truth is, but something is clearly off. A GM as successful and popular as KP shouldn’t have his agent alleging that he might get canned.

maybe the Vulcans want to be the smartest guys in the room?
and they feel intimidated by the quantifiable analysis of KP and Penn?
I agree about Nate. Like he said in the interview last week, he can be “out of here in 2 minutes”
As much as we want to give Paul Allen the benefit of the doubt (“greatest owner in sports” etc) the Blazers were hemoraging 50 mil/year les than a decade ago, and he hired the Vulcans to get the franchise back into the black. But once he let them in the door, it’s hard to keep them from extending their tentacles
I suddenly have a cold feeling about the Oden contract negotiations, this summer. The Penn firing was a shot across the bow at the whole basketball side of the operation
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Jaynes and Vance >>>>>>>>>> Quick
Are you kidding me? Those guys have been in the game fifty times longer than Quick. Yes Dwight is a nasty sourpuss, but he’s still right a lot of the time.
Meanwhile I still haven’t seen Quick apologize to Andre publicly for asserting on 95.5 that he was ‘only playing for the money’
Conclusion: Quick’s a douche.

Regardless of the source
if KP’s job is in jeopardy, that would be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of.
There would be about twenty-five NBA owners flooding his cell phone with calls were he to be out in Portland.
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that “some NBA exec” said such a thing, it’s well established that quite a few of them (Ainge, Warkentein come to mind) don’t like KP, and I’m sure more than a few are happy to potty-mouth him anonymously to a reporter.
I would be much more surprised were it true.
If anybody “blew it” with Oden/Durant, it’s the medical staff. (Unless, of course, Oden was taken above their objections…)

i dont like to place blame
but mabey penn was the guy who messed up the miles deal and our cap hit there. if so that was a very expensive blow it and cost paul millions. if i cost my boss 10+ million im sure i would be fired. not sure who gets the credit but someone should have. i think kp should go too. he was in the commanders chair during alot of big blow its. besides its not like we are getting any great picks in the near future. he can work his “magic” somewhere else and if we need him again we can hire him back. what we need is someone battle tested with experience putting together and keeping together a championship team.
If we need him we can get him back?
I hardly think so. He’s very successful.
Also, Penn didn’t join the team until 2007. Miles’ deal was signed before that.

not the signing
the attempt to remove it

I agree about your theory on Penn, it's very possible
Not so much about KP.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
don't worry.
you will never be in the position to lose 10 million dollars.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
I can see it now..
On the Blazers’ bench, Nate’s cell rings:
“What?”
“Nate, it’s Kevin.”
“Dammit, Kevin, I’m in the middle of a game here”.
“I know. I’m watching.”
“Then why are you calling?”
“You just took Batum out.”
“Yeah, so?”
“He’s 3-3 from the arc. Put him back in. Webster sucks—I told that moron Nash we should have gotten Paul…”
“Batum’s tired, Kevin. He needs a blow.”
“He doesn’t look tired to me… put him back in. Oh, and quit running so many isos for Roy….”
