tom penn is secretly
the real life version of dexter and allen found out about it, but because penn killed someone allen wanted dead he didn’t turn him into the police. Instead he just fired him and is using vague words to describe it because only him and penn know the real reason.

There is a lot more to this Penn story than we know
His quotes saying he can say nothing means he probably had to sign a confidentiality deal, which means he may have done something.
But who knows?

"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
Official statement out
Philosophical differences, hmm:
Portland Trail Blazers Team President Larry Miller announced today that Tom Penn has been relieved of his duties as Vice President of Basketball Operations, effective immediately.
Miller cited philosophical differences as the reason for the dismissal of Penn, who joined the Trail Blazers as assistant general manager in 2007.
“We felt it was in the organization’s best interest to move in a different direction at this time,” Miller said. “This was not an easy decision, as Tom has played an integral role for us the past three seasons. We thank him for his contributions and wish him the best in the future.”

It's happened a lot here recently
I presumed it was a browser issue on my end, but it could be an SBN problem…
Yeah I figured as much.
I’m not sure if it’s a site or browser problem. I could test on a different browser, but it might connect to a different SBN server anyway, and I’m not up for troubleshooting past that…
They cheered from the very start of the game, and absolutely blew up during the 4th quarter. Fans in the “good seats” around me were just as passionate as the ones looking down from the nosebleeders, and everybody loved their team.
My experience as well, from my various experiences in the Garden and the Coliseum.
i can’t believe he couldn’t remember the name of Powell’s….

He can finish at the rim. He can shoot free throws. He has no weaknesses in his offensive game; so if that’s something he wants to do, he can easily do it.

they use presale to make sure those fans get tickets for sure but i think you just have to put in a password to get access and I googled it and i think the password is ‘lasers’

Canzano is digging back in time
- A Blazers source tells me that Penn absolutely rubbed owner Paul Allen the wrong way in the war room during the draft that netted Portland Greg Oden. “Paul may never have recovered from that,” source said. But it raises some questions about why Allen would give Penn a raise and promotion so recently. Something more had to have happened for Allen to move so shrewdly to hand Penn the pink slip on Tuesday.- Kevin Pritchard has huge latitude as a GM, and moves around the organization with a wide berth. So how miffed must have Paul Allen been for Pritchard to be unable to save Penn, who is viewed as “KP’s guy” around the building? Curious also that Pritchard isn’t toeing the company line on this one and is throwing it back at Allen.
-
I doubt it was a debate about talent
Penn hasn’t been seen as a judge of talent.
I bet it was a use of money and resources thing in that Oden draft.

Canzano is so full of it
I talked with Penn on Sunday at the Rose Garden Arena, and my spider senses were firing pre-game when I saw Allen’s favorite executive Bob Whitsitt Todd Lieweke hanging around the arena. I like Lieweke and think he’s done a good job, but when he showed up I started poking around, figuring there was a good reason he’d made the trip.
I’ve been to three games this year, and Lieweke was a two of them. It’s not like “something is happening” when Lieweke shows up at the Rose Garden.
It's Canzano.
I read that whole article, but I had to take it with a grain of salt.
He would have been absent, so he needed to post something.
I usually don't give him hits either
Sometimes there is a grain of truth in his reports. Sometimes it feels like he just wants to seem important.
You People have corrupted me
I get home after a long day, find out that Tom Penn “rubbed people the wrong way,” and immediately head for the junk drawer to read all of the semi-dirty jokes.

“Force of Nature” – Following Feng Shui master Ariel Towne apply the mysterious discipline to various clients, situations or spaces.
“The Dome Experiment” – A dozen volunteers become test subjects in a bio-environment that will test their roles to see if nature or nurture wins out.
Yes, there are 6 others at the link, all just about as good as those two.
Does this strike anyone else as "The Darius Miles letter, round two"?
I hate stuff re Trail Blazers that comes from above Larry Miller. This never ended well.
I'm waiting until tomorrow
I’d like a source besides Canzano and Penn himself to provide any details.
While I wouldn't be surprised, it also doesn't mean the firing wasn't earned.
Any reports besides Canzano that hint at that?
Quick's first article, since updated
It is unknown why Penn was fired, but it is believed to have come from owner Paul Allen and not Pritchard.
And from what I’m hearing from other rank and file in the org or with connections to the org
He was officially fired by Larry Miller as well.
Technically he doesn’t report to KP correct? I know the org chart is a mess there.
I've worked in orgs where a person is protected by someone on high.
But eventually the protector shrugs and says “there’s nothing more I can do for you”. While they’re technically against the firing, they know there is little they can do, and that it may be deserved.
I think it’s early to say KP was against it based on released data. I imagine he’s not thrilled, but that unhappiness could be also pointed at Penn, instead of the org.
In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the Darnell Valentine firing
Our of the blue, extremely vague reasons, strange timing, etc. If I remeber right, Darnell was fired for “culture” reasons.

Really? Without trying to dramatize this – Penn is not irreplaceable – but have you read the CBA? Not just the Wiki or the FAQ, but the actual document? I have, and I wouldn’t claim to understand 80% of what is in there, much less be able to interpret it in five minutes while another team is on the line asking about a move.

I like to do Blazer questions with different sets of answers. This one will be interesting.
TRIVIA: During the past decade, tons of Blazers have played more than 10 minutes but scored zero points
Name the Blazers who have accomplished that feat 10 or more times this decade. There are 8 players.
Nope.
I had a feeling the last one would be tough, but honestly I thought nobody would guess Nic, so what did I know?
Damon Stoudamire, 10 times!
Most of which were grouped in a couple short periods, I assume he was either injured or sulking.
He wasn't playing much some games
During the struggles with him being an awful player, and injuries, or whatever.
#52
I had a feeling nobody would guess Damon
Anyone want to guess if Brandon or LMA were even listed at all?
LMA went cold for 4 days in his rookie season
And had two games with 10+ minutes and zero points.
Brandon Roy is not on the list.
I’ll see if I can pop up a similar question but with a different stat.
Three times.
It’s probably because he was only here one season. The person in question had a much longer career here, and was just guessed elsewhere.
Don't see where it was mentioned above-- I know Cab did
Two officials who spent time in last 10 days with Port GM Kevin Pritchard and fired No 2 guy, Tom Penn, spoke of “awkwardness” and “tension”
League sources have been describing unrest in front office for months, centered on Pritchard’s inability to get new contract after Penn did.
Pritchard helped Penn leverage Portland with Minny job, and sources say GM expected he could get new deal too. Ownership declined, emphatically.
Many believed Penn was destined to run team, but clearly something caused momentum to change lately and Penn lost favor. And his job.
Are you kidding me Awoj? Penn was gonna run the team over KP? C’mon.

Hahahahahaha — I beat Ben to it!
Is there any reason, other than the hint that he annoyed KP during the 2007 draft
To believe there’s any truth to this?
Just wondering if this is serious or a running joke, it’s repeatedly come up.
I can't imagine it's anything talent-centric
As that is not his field of expertise and was never purported to be, and even if Oden was a mistake, everything else KP did isn’t.
Plus we woulda’ heard stuff about a riff between Penn and KP about Oden vs Durant looooong ago. But not stuff that’s more complicated, such as not using assets in a way Penn argues for or whatever.

That is PRECISELY what I am saying
KP is an infallible angel sent by the Pope from heaven.
You must think little of me to think that I think I am saying that KP has never made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.
We can list the “mistakes”… likely Hedo, and maybe a 2nd rounder or two. Not many mistakes. Nothing that Penn, destined to run the team as we’ve known for so long, can point to and say SEEEE?!?!

I predicted Sergio would be out of the league in a few years and Jack would still be a solid NBA player, but I don’t wanna be right!
Right now, it looks like it :-(
#52
unfortunately
you’re probably right.
he needs a few seasons of beastin it up in the acb to regain his confidence.
The theories that he came over too early are prolly true
I know Amlmart1 had been saying that for YEARS now.
One thing people overlooked, including me, about the Sergio/D’Antoni pairing, is that D’Antoni has jerked around every other PG he has ever had except for Nash. Every backup Nash had was in and out of the rotation, and they’ve never had a consistent starting PG for the Knicks yet (only been two years, and he hasn’t had a clear starter obviously).
D’Antoni might be tough on his PGs. He also seems to run hot and cold with his emotions. He might be a Young Nelly.

He would have to live to be 100 to win half as many games a Nelly at his present pace

Tied for 13 with Paul, a very well known All Star level player
Number 17, a rookie
Number 18, someone who has been mentioned repeatedly in trade ideas on BE.
He's 49-118 on the season.
It’s supposed to be a minimum of 55 made three pointers, so I’m guessing they pro-rate it for partial seasons.

cause they don’t got much for shooters, so that leaves a wide open three from time to time. He must be good enough to hit a wide open three im guessing

Ok people, music fans, this is driving me up the wall
I like this song: South of France, by Harlem. When I first heard it, I swore it was a cover of a Pixies song. I’ve Googled it, and can’t find any mention of it as a Pixies song, or as a cover at all.
But I coulda’ sworn I heard this before.
Has anyone else here heard this song from a while back? Is this a cover? Am I nuts?

I somehow missed this one
This was on NBA.com just under a year ago:

According to Bright Side of the Sun, the backstory:
The Warriors were playing an April Fools joke on one of their broadcasters that was turning 50. They tried to add him to the box score and typed in “DNP – TOO OLD/NO TALENT” but his name wasn’t in the database as a player so somehow it defaulted to Grant Hill.

Tonight's story has been interesting for the reaction
Some people leaned toward Tom Penn’s side, others to the Blazers.
Some saw conspiracies in the timing, others just felt it was generally weird to let someone go now.
Some thought it was about talent, others not.
Some assumed the Clips story was accurate, others believed it wasn’t.
This story was all over the place. I’m curious what gets released tomorrow.
MY PREDICTION
Penn wanted a larger role, as one who is ambition is prone to want, and the “promotion” was a way to quench his thirst for advancement. There isn’t a future in Portland for him if his goal is to, someday soon, be above KP or be equal with KP, so… yeah.
I dunno why he was fired suddenly. If I am right, perhaps to have time to replaced him for the upcoming offseason.
#52
Not so much in the NBA, unless rumors break about a serious problem related to it.
Which is not the case as far as we know.
Yeah it's the firing thing that's problematic
If they were growing apart, it would have been a simple “It’s time for you to go, please tender your resignation”. Firing an exec is a very unusual activity.
He met with Nate and tried to blackmail him with their sex tape
Nate told KP who told PA who fired TP

Possible big news coming up for talk show fans
Fox Broadcasting is inching closer to bringing Conan O’Brien back to late night.
Key Fox executives, including Rupert Murdoch, are on board with the plan and would like to finalize a deal in coming weeks so they can make a splash on May 17 when the network unveils its fall lineup. Several significant issues remain and the Fox talks could fall apart

How many wins did you think we'd get prior to the season starting? And now, is jscotjr close you think?
I guessed we’d have 52 wins, because i figured we’d grow as a team from last season, in which we overachieved a little. I knew we’d have injuries, but if i’d of known we’d have this many i would have predicted that we wouldn’t even make it to the playoffs.
So now, looking at the rest of the schedule, I’m going to say 48 games, losing one game that I don’t expect to lose for the next thirteen.
Washington W
@ Phoenix L
Dallas W
@ New Orleans W
@ Oklahoma City L
New York W
@ Denver L
@ Sacramento W
@ Los Angeles W
Dallas L
@ Los Angeles L@kers L
Oklahoma City W
Golden State W
this seems very reasonable to me.

Could this be part of the reason the Blazers have given up some monster leads this season?
"I never scored over 40 in high school and college," Roy said. "Never had the mentality. I always had the mentality that if we’re up eight and I got 30 and I don’t have to score then I won’t score, instead of like, ‘Man, go get 40.’ I never had that mentality of, ‘Oh, go get it.’
