Junk Drawer 5/16/10 - Calling out all the Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
Aloha Mates,
This was originally a reply to a comment in a fanshot. Ha, just kidding.
It was just time for a new Junk Drawer and I found some cool links that might be fun for us to look through.
The Official 2009-10 Prediction Thread
I predicted 56 wins and this:
Lose game 7 at home
Because the Blazers don’t have a PG to guard Paul.
60 wins: What Will It Take?
I said this:
I think Miller replacing Sergio is probably worth two more wins.
Little did I know, Miller would cause 20 losses.
Hurryup09 is a freaking profit:
Only problem: inevitably, some things will go WORSE than last season, e.g., injuries. Maybe chemistry issues will finally raise their ugly head. Maybe Roy’s last minute magic will wane a bit.
On a side note, my wife and are are thinking of making a sex tape but we wanted to get in shape first. I'm taking steroids and diet pills while chasing them down with 200 proof Mexican vodka, and I'm cutting out carbs, fats, calories, proteins, fiber, fruits and vegetables. My wife is using 3 Minute Legs and the Shakeweight.

A sex tape is often now a calculated career move.
I had 56 mins as well. I had LMA 20-10 and Oden playing well after the break. :(
I also had Andre clicking well from the start. Lets not go there.
I am perpendicularly pissed off right now!!!!!!
Typos are only awesome if they can be taken way worse than intended.

56 minutes would beat my personal best by about 45.

I predicted beards.
The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers
Since I like to call attention to myself:
Since it’s official: 53 wins
I think if everything works right, we could win 60, but that’s a lot of things to work right. Oden needs to be Oden for 30+ minutes a game. Miller needs to fit right away. Blazers need to avoid injuries. We need to win the games that we’re supposed to win. We need to win out on the road.
I don’t think all of these things come together this year. But enough of them do for us to reach 53 wins, which puts us into a good playoff position. Sure, that’s not as good as last year. But last year so many things came together that might not happen as well this year (like catching so many teams on back-to-backs). It’s not that we’ll be worse than last year (we wont), but that things will just work out this way.

just a word of advice, Tom....
i think vodka has a high sugar content or something. but i’m not really sure. i can’t remember. but you might want to discontinue to the use of vodka for getting in “look good for my sex tape” shape. cause i don’t want to be distracted by your love handles when i’m watching this sex tape.

on our previous possession, i missed the go ahead shot but made sure it was a 2 for 1 situation. we actually played good defense and they missed, we got the rebound with 10 seconds or so. i ended up shooting an elbow jumper after a pass (from AI!) as time expired.

I’d take a pick of my “games played” and my ratings if you like. I’ve only done 108 games, I think. Maybe if I PROVE how amazing I am, you’ll do what I say, dammit.
Besides my duel with Arenas in that one 2nd round game, I haven’t had much excitement in the playoffs because I totally blow everyone out.
Oooh, last night I played, and I’m used to the crowd chanting MVP! MVP! MVP! for me when I’m at the line, but I helped Oden score 38 points and late in the game when he was at the line, the crowd did the MVP chant for him.
My PER is 73, his PER is 32. Lebron has a PER of 33, so he’s 2nd in PER.
#52
what’s funny is that PER actually underrates you because it assumes you that get assisted at the team rate, which is probably really high due to… you. So your passing hurts your PER!
his APER is probably 80+
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

Heehee
It’s a vicious cycle!
The first few games was rough, as I wasn’t playing naturally… I was trying to force assists into Oden and not going for the right play.
Now me and Oden got a good flow, and I get him a few dunks in the 1st quarter while doing it the right way.
My rookie year, I didn’t give a crap if David Lee scored 20 or 2, so I’d pass it to whoever had the best shot. And at first, I’d only be passing to Oden (but in my defense, I don’t care about Rudy Gay or Spencer Hawes or Brandon Bass, so why would I pass to them?),
I play like an alternate universe Sergio. I have NO jumper whatsoever, and I either finish the play or get the assist.
#52
I am a natural at basketball video games
I am really good at it. I get a ton of points, shoot 70% (all on dunks and layups though), a lot of assists, a GRIP of steals (I am averaging 12 steals a game right now, early in my 2nd season)…
I am a 6’3" PG for the Knicks.
I know, make the difficulty level tougher, but it’s only got 1 setting in My Player mode, and I ALWAYS dominate basketball video games even at the hardest settings.
#52

Toronto dang well knows that they suck without Bosh and given the giant turd that is Hedo’s contract they really need to resign him since Hedo keeps them from rebuilding.

It ain't up to Toronto!
I don’t think we’re gonna get Bosh, but Toronto doesn’t have much of a choice. If Bosh thinks they won’t be able to make a winner, as he seems pretty fed up with sucking, he’d leave… I imagine.

Yes! Yes! In the face!
Would it be any worse than what the Leafs themselves have done
To that once proud franchise?
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Not in the least. But at least they're moving in the right direction now.
Brian Burke and Ron Wilson are a very good GM/Coach combination. I’m still skeptical about the trade of their first round pick for Kessel, but the draft is pretty weak this year anyway. That, and the Leafs tend to screw up draft picks anyway. They needed to tank like they are now a few years ago.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
I feel sorry for their fans
At the same time its great and sad that a team like that sells out no matter how good or bad they are.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Pssh.....Those people in the expensive seats may as well be Laker fans.
They have this club at the ACC called the “Platinum Lounge” that they can go to. People are always so busy mingling and having a good time there, they can’t be bothered to show up for the start of the next period. It’s similar to the problem the Ducks have with getting fans back for the start of the 3rd quarter at Autzen.
But yes, everyone else is great. Me and my friends went to see them play the Canucks in Vancouver a few years back. I assumed I’d be one of the very few wearing a Leafs tuque. But there were almost as many Leafs fans as there were Canucks fans in that building. That didn’t stop them from berating me as we left the arena after the 5-1 drubbing by Vancouver.
My favorite Leafs fan story is from a few years ago when they were playing particularly awful one game. After yet another goal, someone threw a crutch on the ice from the end behind the Leafs goal. The guy had a cast on his leg and still had one crutch in his hand. As he was being escorted out by security, he was reported as saying “You guys need this more than I do!”
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Hee hee, sound like Red Sox fans
You can count on seeing Boston fans at everything single MLB game, whether or not the Red Sox are actually playing. If they are, watch out. I went to one in Baltimore a few years back and there were far more Baltimore than Boston fans.

by 92wastheyear on Mar 16, 2010 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions
I actually was about to argue with you.
And then I thought more about it and realize this hidden point. Brandon, even if he’s winning the game with less than a second left from 30feet out being covered from all angles, is not flashy. He’s exciting down the stretch… but never flashy.
#10 & #52
Exactly
Flashy=Style …Rudy had that in spades
Roy is a very exciting player …especially in the 4th quarter. But he does it without forcing it…without knocking your socks off….and at the end of the 3rd quarter you see him with 17, 5 and 5 and wonder when the hell he did that…then he goes out and adds another 10 pts or so in 4th. Blammo.
This is one reason he hasn’t hit the national attention the way other guys have …luckily the coaches are aware …those 3 AllStar nod look really gaudy on his resume and that generates some buzz with casual fans
Roybot: "Then he said "My girlfriend is from LA." to which I replied "Well then you need to find a new girlfriend."’
by 92wastheyear on Mar 16, 2010 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Media attention is key though even if the public doesn't always pick up on it.
Like you can tell that Batum has a good chance of being a All-defensive player in the coming years not just because we see how much impact he can have defensively but because even the national media are pointing it out. Coaches know he will be on their top wing now.
And I remember the same thing with Roy. Despite very little attention, his name became associated with clutch play and being a great player. Coaches talked about adjusting and accounting for him.. as much as they could. He would still have to win a championship to even break into the conversation for being voted for an all-star game, but you could see the progression of how he was considered by the coaches and the media analysts as a top tier player who now will always get a fair consideration for an all-star bid if he’s been healthy and the blazers are contending.
But yeah, it’s strange because Brandon can do some pretty explosive things that just blow you away, but the whole package is just so self-contained and under control that he doesn’t come out as flashy or stylish.
#10 & #52
I totally agree regarding media attention being key
That is why those national games (as much as we hate some of the guys calling the games) are so important. They build reputations. If there such a thing as Bedge facts …..there are ESPN facts too and they 10 times more powerful and national in scope
Roybot: "Then he said "My girlfriend is from LA." to which I replied "Well then you need to find a new girlfriend."’
by 92wastheyear on Mar 16, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Hence why Travis Outlaw will always be a little Bo.
Brandon Roy has shown some great stuff on National TV. I think the general basketball fanbase in the east coast still doesn’t see a lot of it because of the time difference, but the more the analysts say things the more it becomes true.
Their facts are powerful enough to augment the reality.
#10 & #52
If Roy starts going stuff in the Playoffs (he hasn't hurt himself yet)
it will cement his status as an all NBA guy….and be remembered forever as a clutch dominant performer

he has a 7.2% TRB at the guard position, that isn’t bad at all.
He’s a nice player who moves without the ball well, plays the passing lanes, comes up with very important offensive rebounds at good times, and is a tremendous shooter. A very nice role player.

So he’s a league average passer and rebounder for his position who is a decent but not spectacular 3p shooter and who plays no defense. Sure, he fits a role that’s needed on a lot of teams, but it’s a very rare skill set.
“decent not spectacular 3p shooter.”
See, Rudy takes his threes coming off of picks, running like mad all over the court. The degree of difficulty compared to Batum, who shoots 47%, is night and day. Is J.R. Smith an average three point shooter? No, he just takes more and far more difficult threes.

i think we would be insane to give up LMA + Batum for Bosh.
Even if Batum doesn’t fulfill his potential, his perimeter defense and his current offensive game is a great compliment to a championship team.
i agree with Norsk, i don’t trust Bosh to stay healthy.
however, LMA+Rudy, then i’ll sign up for it.

you're assuming we're a championship team with Aldridge
I think we overpaid. If he’s our 2nd option it’s not going to happen. Oden has an uncertain future. We need a big capable of being a legit 2nd option and even a 1st option if Roy is having an off night.
If you aren’t trusting Bosh to stay healthy, then you must doubt 90% of the league. I don’t consider missing 15 games to be an injury risk especially compared to the injuries we’ve sustained.
"In Batum's case he must realize he is very likely the first Blazer to successfully fight over a pick all season..."
-Ben
yeah of course on the overpaid aspect and the assumption. KP was about to give Hedo $50m.
i’m assuming we can be a championship team with Oden/Roy/LMA/Batum. I think KP is assuming that too or was assuming that.
Bosh would definitely put us over the top if he replaced LMA. i’m also saying we can be a championship team with Oden/Roy/Batum as our core…
of course all of that hinges on health and luck esp with GO..
at the end of the day, but yeah, i have to agree now that a healthy Oden/Bosh/Roy combo would be pretty magnificent.
i’m basically saying it is crazy because you don’t need to package batum to get that from Toronto because LMA/Rudy or LMA/Bayless > Lee package that is floating around.
as for health concerns, i’m leaning towards Dr. Norsk’s assessment on Bosh’s knees.
fiftytwo
I don't get trading the only guy under 6 10 who plays defense
The Blazers would never get out of the 2nd round without Batum
Andre Miller is an Anachronism
our bad defense is first and foremost a coaching issue
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.
Free AK1984
You just want a scapegoat
Even if it’s coaching, it’s only 50% of the problem. Miller isn’t any better than Blake at defense and Black wasn’t good, just adequate. Roy says he cares about D but we know the truth. LA cares, just isn’t a banger, Oden cares, Bayless only cares about himself.
It’s way deeper than just the coach.
Andre Miller is an Anachronism
its at least 50%.
The tools are there for Roy and LA to play much better defense. A good defensive coach make that happen. Simply getting Dante in the rotation over Howard would make a big difference. Scott Skiles would have our defense whipped into shape within a few months.
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.
Free AK1984
yeah, i can see that.
Ray Allen and Paul Pierce didn’t know how to play defense until TT was on board…but then again, they had an amazing defender on the perimeter in Rondo and an interior defender in KG

What's the point in being closer if you don't reach it
Both Bosh and LA are 2nd fiddles. Neither guy is going to get the Blazers over the hump without help. I agree that Bosh is better than LA but he’s not worth Batum. Throw anyone but Roy and Batum in the trade and I’m cool.
Andre Miller is an Anachronism

they are a .500 team, they'd maybe be a couple games better with Nate. maybe.
That roster is awful. Bosh has to do yeoman’s work to make them a .500 team. Trade Roy for Bosh and they are worse if anything. I don’t even want to think about how bad they’d be on D.

Why isn't toronto better?
They play in the east for crying out loud. Bosh is better than Roy, better than LMA plus Batum. Why does his team suck?
have you looked at that roster? they make us look amazing on defense.
Hedo and Bargs are horrible.
and they are .500, not exactly a bottom feeder.

No reason to believe Brandon won't jump back up next year
He’ll likely be more ready at training camp. The only fear is further hammy problems right now.
and if so, Roy will be better on offense
and while neither will be great on D, Roy will be worse.
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.
Free AK1984
I don't expect to see Roy on the All-defensive team.
But I suspect his defense will improve year after year, as he sees how important it is to succeed in the postseason.
If we're going to speculate,
I’d say that Bosh giving 100% on the defensive end is a much much more effective and valuable defender than a max-effort Brandon Roy.
That also is related to position.
A defensive minded big man is always more valuable than a defensive minded guard, all other things being equal. And it’s more pronounced when the big man is better at defense than the guard.
Even with the defensive differences, I just can’t convince myself that Bosh is better to have than Roy. You can cover for a guard’s defensive liability better than with a big man.
Well, what if Brandron Roy grew longer arms
And had thigh muscle transplants from Greg Oden. What then…
I mean, since we’re having a speculative discussion.
Bosh is basically a cancer by saying he’s not staying in Toronto…so if he said that here with the Blazers, i’m sure the other players would half-ass it too.
so no, we would be worse with Bosh
fiftytwo
When did he say that?
Link, please. It’s been insinuated a lot but I’ve never seen a quote attributed to Bosh that said anything more committal than “I’m focused on this season”
that’s basically saying he’s not committed to Toronto
he’s not good enough to do that…only Lebron!
fiftytwo
If we know he won't stay
The players certainly know, and Bosh making it pretty much known (without a DIRECT quote) that he isn’t likely gonna stay will just make his teammates not care also… since he’s the star.
It’s a tough situation, I ain’t necessarily blasting Bosh for not caring as much. The Raptors are poorly put together.
#52
i don’t think he means 2nd tier, just that they can’t be the “man” on the team and make them successful…

A felony assault charge has been dropped against UCLA forward Nikola Dragovic, who was accused of assaulting a man after a concert in Hollywood.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said Monday that they had insufficient evidence to pursue the case. A charge against Dragovic’s friend, Aleksandar Stanisic, was also dropped Monday.
Authorities say Stanisic argued with another man and his girlfriend during a concert. Dragovic, a 22-year-old forward from Serbia, was accused of rushing the man and slamming him into a glass case, which shattered.

Does this one include a group paper? Those are the worst, especially if you got someone that can’t write and doesn’t know it.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
well it's a business type capstone, why i chose this i don't know, and i regret
so I’M out of my element, but it sucks when you just start getting sick of some of your group. Last night i was waiting on a slide from another person, and i just got so pissed because she was supposed just fix one thing, but took 2 hours, by that time i had already ate, and went to bed soon thereafter because i had another final super early this morning, so it’s my bad for not getting the finished slides (which i had to redo and keep resendiing to them because they kept fixing stuff and sending me new drafts) to our group leader last night (arbitrary deadline, as our presentation isn’t until thurs.)
and when i finally got slides, which were late three times or so, they were created in office 2000 so i couldn’t just drag them to move other slides where they need to go between them, and there were still spelling errors, and other ugly crap.
at this point i’ve done what i can do on the draft and the rest of it is out of my hands.
i was more referring to
the fact that i’m so green that i haven’t worked for dumb face jerkwads before in “the real world”
actually come to think of it
i’ve only had a couple jerkwad bosses, so i’ve been relatively lucky i guess

Cornell Basketball on the front page of Yahoo Sports
Quote:
The secret to the Cornell basketball team’s transformation from Ivy League also-ran to trendy NCAA tournament upset pick is an aging 14-bedroom, four-bathroom house near campus affectionately known as “The Dog Pound.”
Thirteen players and a team manager live in that house, which hosts everything from LOST viewing parties, to ping-pong tournaments, to fiercely competitive games of Super Smash Bros on Nintendo 64.
Although the fridge is typically stocked with expired milk and the couches are often strewn with empty pizza boxes, Cornell players insist the team chemistry they’ve built living together makes the chaos worthwhile. The Big Red won its third consecutive Ivy League championship earlier this month, earning a No. 12 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first-round date with fifth-seeded Temple on Friday in Jacksonville.
“I definitely think (living together) helps,” senior Louis Dale told the Cornell Daily Sun. “Us being close friends allows us to make sure that basketball is always fun for us. But at the same time we know that we have to take care of business and work hard and all that sort of thing. It helps a lot with chemistry on the court.”

oh, that’s just a passing comment.
Being worried about Bosh’s knees definitely is a real concern. Oden’s injuries are scary enough. Degenerative knees, though? That’s a whole new realm of scary.

You and Norsk seem worried about Bosh’s knees here and in the past. Has he had worrisome injuries there? I ain’t followed it lots.

he just seems to be moving worse each time I see him, and the braces he is wearing are insane. It could be completely confirmation bias.
I want all of our players to wear huge braces
I wear braces on my knees in 2K10, just in case, and I’ve never had knee problems.

He has sprained his right knee heavily in Feb 2009. Already once was placed on IL with a "sore right knee" in 2008.
It’s just a general hunch, also going from the bigger and bigger sleeves and braces he wears. You generally don’t start wearing something protective on a joint if you never felt pain there. It doesn’t have to be something major, maybe it’s just the general “tendinitis” label which can mean anything from some ligament pain to something degenerative. But before giving him a $70+ million deal, that’s definitely something I would check out intensively to not see him go into a microfracture procedure after a year or two.
Oh, he also sprained his right knee in 2004 and missed most of January. In 2008 he missed most of February.
Look where the brace is 1, 2. That’s the kind of thing Duncan and Garnett are wearing, only they are more than one contract older.
I would love to be able to get Bosh
And of course I’d give up LA to get him.

Several years ago
I thought that was his ceiling also. But after the claims every year by LMA that he has it figured out, and after seeing him improve his game somewhat in the middle of each season, only to regress at the beginning of the succeeding season, I have finally reached the conclusion that LMA is a nice player that can average about 18 and 8….which is not shabby, but he’s no world beater and he will never be the #1 option on a really good team.
He has a ceiling and he’s pretty close to it, IMO.

What I was saying over there was that the difference between them didn't justify throwing in two or three rotation
players and paying another max salary.
Allen will probably go over the salary cap and luxury tax even, but he’s not going to blow the roof off it. There is still Oden to sign, another center to sign and a serious back up 4.
You’ll get more bang for the buck there. You do a sign and trade for Bosh, you still have to do all those things PLUS backfill the holes in the roster you created making the trade.
you are talking about a superstar. a player on Brandon Roy's tier.
Getting another player like that’s not worth giving away LMA plus rotation players? Really?
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

Also, vets will come out of the woodshed to fill our holes in the roster for a chance to play with Roy, Oden, and Bosh.

Or, see what the Celtics have been doing to keep their team floating.
After trading everything for a couple of superstars.
#10 & #52
Oh, sorry, I don't actually agree with this approach.
I was really just arguing from the point of view that you can do what the Celtics did a couple years ago or what the Heat did just before that. You can trade a lot for an impact player and fill your gaps with the Vet Mins you can add to your roster to fill in spaces. It got each of them one championship, and I am almost ready to put money on the Celtics not getting another one out of those three. I hear the window closing fast out there.
I could give up a lot for Bosh because we have the depth of talent to allow for a 3 for 1 trade if it included the right people. The other difference is that Bosh is a lot younger than KG or Allen, so we are adding a piece that could be with us for a long time.
But I wouldn’t just want to sell the future and put all the eggs into a basket with unknown knee concerns. I’d consider the LA to Bosh risk worth it, but I would carefully consider what I would be willing to toss on top of that.
#10 & #52
Right, it's not about Bosh being better than LMA, he clearly is. it's about whether the
added costs in personnel, salary and the backfilling make it worth it.
Yeah, and it really could.
Throwing one guy on the outskirts anyway (Marty, Bayless, Rudy) ontop of LA would be fair but it’s dangerous to allow yourself to give up too much young cheap talent that is still finding it’s place in the NBA.

by Cablinasian on Mar 16, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I think I mis-stated what I meant...
You’re right…..it is very tough.
I was thinking of distances….the different between Phelps longest individual race (400M) and shortest individual race (100M). It’s a 4X difference. Heiden had a short race of 500M and a long race of 10,000M, a difference of 20X.
That’s what i was getting at. I’m not denigrating Phelps….he was (and is) amazing….and he’s done it over 2 Olympics, with possibly a 3rd coming up.
Heiden simply won every race his sport had, along with the 20X difference in lengths. He won the sprints and the distance races….no one else has ever done that.
Another thing that greatly impresses me about him is that he then took up cycling and became the US road champion, and was instrumental in the formation of the first US pro cycling team (Motorola), racing the the Tour d’ France.

You guys don't get it
There is a reason that athletes with less athleticism beat athletes more athletic than them. There is a reason that MJ was great for so long. Desire is about the same as competitiveness, it trumps a lot of stuff.
Andre Miller is an Anachronism
You have to be joking
Andre Miller is the little guy who understands who he can beat up and who he cannot. He goes so far as to go around beating up those guys smaller than him and being a jerk a-word bully, but he also know who he cannot beat up.
In real life, that sucks, because some little guy is going around beating up guys smaller than him for no reason other than that Miller can do it. That is also Miller’s game. He is more than happy to beat up on someone smaller than him, and he cowers away like a moist succulent lamb against a superior opponent.
Fundamentally, that is the reason I hate Miller. I was a tiny kid in grade school, and it pissed me off when kids that should be getting their butts kicked by other kids, decided to pick on me. Miller is a second tier bully.
Andre Miller is an Anachronism
I'd like to make up an excuse and I can't
I’d like to attribute it to huffing paint, except I stopped huffing about a week ago.
Andre Miller is an Anachronism
the thing to do when you’re a tiny kid and get picked on by other tiny but slightly larger than you kids is to lock the anger and hurt up deep inside and let it fester until you become a socially defunct person whose greatest social circle is people on a sports blog….

i will fight your crazy statistics with statistics that people understand
I think “advanced” stats are very distilled by the time they reach HoopData or BBR. People refuse to learn them because IT’S MATH, but they aren’t any harder to look at than PPG or RBG. Heck, MORTIMER is cool with stats and gets the advanced ones.
MORTIMER. lol.
well, when you put it that way, i’m just ashamed of myself that i don’t take the time to understand them.

I don’t argue with the math part, but my position is that there is more to the story than what is currently being measured. Box scores are incomplete.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
being incomplete doesn’t make them invalid. Nothing can tell the entire story of what goes on in basketball. Yet by cobbling together a bunch of pretty solid metrics, we can get a good idea of what is going on.
saying that stats are only worthwhile if absolute kinda misses the point.
I like how you use stats. I see explanations and qualifying statements along with yours. However there are people that like to manipulate others with numbers, and they rarely tell the whole story with their numbers or words (or even symbols – i might even accept pictures and video).
So, I think it would be good to consider that there is more to winning than what shows in a box score. I think it would be good to start counting more so called intangibles that do lead to winning. I mean – who can argue with wanting more numbers to look at? See – more math!
I get the paper, so I don't care!
there is absolutely more to winning than what is in the box score. Heck, a lot of our advanced stats are aimed at figuring out which box score stats don’t lead to winning – thus the focus on scoring efficiency rather than raw output.
Stats are best described as “getting us to ask the right questions.” We need to analyze them and properly put them in the correct context for them.
yeah, the whole point of advanced stats is to do better than what the box score can do.
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

with the near demise of newspapers (limited space), I think it is time to start bringing it to the public, since there is unlimited space on the web.
Also, if I am a intangibles kind of player looking to renew my contract, I am begging my agent to do everything he can to get those kind of stats out there.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I am positive
If LMA led the league in stripping the ball from bigs driving the lane and it led to a change of possession that most of the time led to us scoring on the other end, it was in his agent’s argument for his contract.
#52
I think they are underestimating the internet though. Those stats should be out there, online.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Yeah it's expensive work generating those stats
Perfectly reasonable to request a hefty fee to access them.
All ya gotta do is add a couple of columns to the game’s stat keeper’s sheet.
Perhaps I am oversimplifying a bit, but it can’t be that hard.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
the statkeeper can’t keep track of whether Roy went left or right, which player rotated correctly, etc.

I know that is what I argued for in the past, but right now it is still not practical. that’s prolly too much detail, but I think a lot of the hustle type plays could be added easily.
diving, preventing a fast break, missed shots against, etc.
Also, someone could also add weights to current stats, like “blocking a shot clock beating attempt”
I get the paper, so I don't care!
It's much harder than that
They’re not just analyzing existing stats. They’re manually reviewing every game for very obscure data. That requires manpower, computation, data storage, and intense basketball knowledge. Plus a little imagination to figure out every stat they can.
Legend has it they walk into every contract negotiation
With a gigantic binder full of color charts of every single statistic that shows what their player brings to the team.

It's 15 months away for Rudy and Batum
And it’ll be under a new CBA. (Could be a lot longer than 15 months depending on the CBA negotiations, of course).
Oden’s will be easier than LMA’s. I think LMA was hard because inferior players got overpaid right before his deal.
Exactly...

The big thing is measuring those things
the things that are in the box score are the easiest to measure (although there is some debate over what is an assist). Getting a standardized measurement for deflections, close outs, etc. is hard to do.
Also because there are so many private companies that are selling this data to teams, I don’t think they would be happy if it were freely available.
math takes work
looking at PPG is much easier than this

I'm reading my Complete TINTIN collection now
I’m glad I read them as a kid, because they’re cool, but YEESH Tintin solves almost nothing himself. He is one lucky mofo, what with being thrown into a factory’s gears the same second the workers go on strike so he isn’t killed, or the wrong poison being put in a needle so he doesn’t go mad…
I like how Herge, the writer, preaches anti-racism and understanding of all people… Africans, Chinese, Indians, etc, but not Japanese. Those dudes are dicks.

I think Simon Pegg is Tintin, yeah!
Spielburg has owned and lost and re-bought the rights to Tintin over and over for, like, 30 years.
I loved Tintin growing up, and they sell the complete collection now which is purty sweet EXCEPT two complaints thus far… the size is smaller than they were intended to be shown, and in (I believe) the BLUE LOTUS book, there is an explanation in the front saying it was set in 1936 when Japan wa doing something or other in China and that was when this book was set and blah blah… and there is no such explanation in this complete collection.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
by DrivetheLane on Mar 16, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions
It's pretty different
Popeye is always beating up cops and wins tons of money in boxing matches each week, and then blows it on craps or gives it to a poor lady raising a bunch of kids and her husband beats her. He beats up the mean guy and then buys the lady a house.
That happens a few times.
It’s just more modern and surreal than most would expect since it was from the 30s, and the cartoons are dumb.
It’s kinda violent, but it’s cool. It’s funny. It’s, like, recognizable from the cartoons, but not really. Plus the artist who did it died young, so it’s peak didn’t last a long time.
#52
he almost sounds like an anti-hero. it makes his whole, “i am what i am and that’s all that i am” line a little bit stronger. does he even eat spinach in the comic strip?

But not for years. And it was because EC Segar (the artist) knew he was popular with kids so he wanted to make Popeye eat spinach so kids would.
He was always like a super hero, anti-hero. Didn’t like authority, being told what to do, was super generous… a man of the people during the depression.
Also, the sunday panels, had another comic below it that was real good… about a guy who lives with a crazy scientist who always invents crap, and the guy’s wife is a fat Olive Oil who always tries to hit him with a rolling pin.

Are great classic comics that have a mix of post-modern ahead-of-their-time humor, and olde tymey 1930s humor that isn’t funny now.

Cathy is awful
I mean, she was on The Tonight Show with Carson and stuff when I was a kid… but she filled a niche that was ignored— adult female themed daily comics.
For Better or Worse isn’t that good, and it isn’t breaking new ground by havign characters age in real-time (Gasoline Alley had done that for decades), but it was only done by one person (I like that) and is rare for this day and age.

I don't appreciate when a light-hearted comic goes seies for more impact
I think it’s a cheap way to create an impact, like with Remember Me.
This also applies to one of my favorite animated shows: Futurama, which had an absolutely devastating ending to one of their episodes.
i liked that about Futurama. which episode do you mean? was it the one where Fry rearranged the stars for Leela? i thought that was really good. upping the seriousness level brings the whole show up a notch. Like the episode with Bender floating in space. I thought that was amazing.

Nahh, not that one.
They did a few episodes with serious endings that worked truly well. Like when Fry is mad that his brother did all the stuff he wanted to do. Or the episode with the message in the stars.
I’m speaking of Jurassic Bark, and the famous dog ending. Some people think it’s amazing due to the impact of the scene. I found it cheap and unnecessary for a light hearted cartoon.
i don’t quite remember Jurassic Bark. i’ll have to watch it again. i have all 4 seasons on DVD.

But also be aware that they’ll ret-con the ending later, in the first movie, Bender’s Big Score.
oh if they ret-con it that sucks. i hate when stuff makes themselves have a “do-over” Lost is on this very shaky ground right now but holding it together.
that’s why i hated the last Matrix movie too. It was all one big do-over so nothing meant anything at all. stupid.

Keep in mind that it wasn't ret-conned until after the series ended.
They also noted that from the moment they wrote the scene, they had planned to ret-con it. But the series was canceled, and it stood as-is for a number of years.
If you’re an animal person, the ending is undeniably heartbreaking.

It doesn't depict intentional animal cruelty
But does show one of the most depressing things you’ll see an animal go through.
The scene is completely unexpected until it appears. Then you’re just staring at the screen in disbelief that they ended the episode like that.

CSKA just took the lead over Sevilla in the other match
1-2 to CSKA on the road.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
wow
I would not have expected that. That’s a warning shot for teams hoping to turn it around with bigtime home legs—Madrid already got burned trying to do that.
Under normal circumstances, I’d pick Barca to crush Stuttgart tomorrow, but with the Lyon and CSKA games going the way they have, Barca should be a little worried.
And level now, 2-2
All even since both sides have 1 home and one away goal.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
that is serious pins and needles
Sevilla has to be freaking nervous. One bad moment will put them out.
I decided on being a Chelsea fan a while ago. I like soccer, but I don’t know much about recent results or the overseas leagues in general. I just picked Chelsea ’cause it was in FIFA 08.
I picked Chelsea years ago
Because it was the first neighborhood I ever stayed in London and I loved it.

Chelsea is kind of like the Blazers. They didn’t win a title forever til they were bought by a really really rich guy.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think Chelsea is more like the Mavs
Abromovich compares more closely to Mark Cuban than any other NBA owner.
I don't know if ManU is really the Lakers of Europe
there seem to be a couple of contenders: ManU, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan.
Man U is universally hated throughout Europe
Barca is more like the Packers, most folks grudgingly like them is my impression.

Real for sure
People are all laughing at Real’s struggles this year.
And AC Milan is hated thanks to their jackass owner, Berlusconi.

I would actually say Real is kind of like the Knicks: forced into a bunch of crummy and expensive personnel moves because of popular opinion. And everybody is laughing at them.
i think it was because they couldn’t meet each other’s emotional needs.

They both have been studs in the same role: the “free role” where you can kind of drift around the field at make it hard for you to mark. Of course, when they both play together, it just means you have no tactical discipline. And they don’t have any defensive minded players in their midfield, so when they get attacked, the other team just gets right through to their defense.
Better coaching more like
And a defensive scheme.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah
they could play like the Manchester United system, where you run three or four attacking midfielders and no strikers, just kind of rotate the attacking duties. But you’d also have to get them to buy in defensively. Those guys have huge egos and have never tracked back in their lives, so you’d need a really strong coach.
They also don’t have anybody who can slow the game down or get any team play going. Their whole system is just going one on one.
And D is all about covering the gaps
Instinctively.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
That was a horrible call
That has to be a penalty for Chelsea.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

That was a takedown in the box.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
From BBC
“No wonder Serie A teams are known for their rock-solid defences. Apparently in Italy, you’re allowed to just wrestle players to the ground if they get in a good position!”
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
haha
It’s an atrocity the way fouls that would be clearly given in the center circle are just not given in the box.
Look I get that you don't want to call cheap fouls
Given that a penalty is most of the time an immediate goal, but still.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
the most typical one is this, though
the attacking player is under the cross ready to head it on goal. The defender just shoulder barges him out of the way. That’s a foul—it has to be a penalty, and it’s NEVER given. How often to you get a penalty for a denied header in the box?
BBC also says
“A scrappy first half draws to a close with jeers from a frustrated Stamford Bridge crowd. Chelsea have been unable to get at Julio Cesar thanks to some real bodies-on-the-line stuff from Inter’s defenders. The atmosphere was frantic as the interval approached. The tension will be turned up even further the longer this stays goalless. Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins was very irate as the players left the pitch.”
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
ok off to class
be back to see what the result is. It’s just going to get tenser and tenser the longer it stays like that./
CSKA GOAL, 2-3 CKSA on aggregate plus away goals edge.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Inter goal
Frak, bound to come sooner or later. Bad D.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
wow
Surprised by that result. I think you guys miss Essien—he is such a dynamic player that can change the tone of a game.
Still, I would have expected Lampard + Drogba to overwhelm them through the middle.
Certainly the most wide open Champions League in years. You’d have to consider Barcelona and Manchester United favorites though.

Random question
If we’d had this team from the start of the season:
Miller/Roy/Batum/LMA/Camby with Bayless/Rudy/Howard off the bench, and spot minutes for Martell and Dante.
Assume Brandon and Nate were on board with this lineup, no Greg or Joel, and Steve and Travis left in a preseason trade for Camby. No major injuries through the season, only minor stuff.
What would be our seed and expectations heading to the playoff? Better, worse than now?
better record by a couple games, somewhat higher expectations, still no better than the 5 seed
Roy could have done his thing instead of having to deal with that pesky problem of having Oden on the team. Batum would have netted us a couple games if healthy all year.

our record would be up there with Denver and Utah. We forget that we’ve lost to some pretty bad teams not having a center… Washington? Blech.
we have 28 losses. with a healthy Roy, there’s no way we lose to Utah up 25, at Washington… we have a far better chance in the second LA game.
It might have affected the Memphis games too.
Also possible we lose one of the SA games or Dallas/Phx games. Just because of the lack of extra adrenaline of the rest of the team, and the other team not taking Portland for granted.
I also think we’d be in the 4-5 seed range minimum, and would be challenging for home court. With us rounding into shape, I’m very curious how well we’ll play some good teams.
Which Roy are you getting?
I.E. how ‘minor’ are Roy’s injuries and is he playing at full effectiveness? I’d have to think you’d be a couple games better and in the 3-5 scrum.
Well, and no Oden
Who was crazy on defense and rebounding when healthy, though Camby covers rebounding.
It’s reasonable to assume this team as described would probably win 53-55 games, yes?

The Raptors got talent… Bargs, Hedo, Calderon, Jack, Bosh… they got talent for the East, even though the team really sucks and is tough to watch in their suckitude. Colangelo has done a bad job.
But Bosh isn’t a “won’t let us lose” type of player. If he passed as well as Gasol, I’d say Bosh is the best PF, and Bosh is just itching to have a real “won’t let us lose” type of player to be next to. I dunno if he wants that though.

He moves quicker than LMA
But he also does the “I give up, I’ll let him score and won’t challenge the shot” thing LMA does that frustrates us.

Funnily enough
Until this season, LMA had the same or better block rate than Bosh has had during his career.
Again, not to say LMA is equal to Bosh overall, but defensively I don’t think they’re very different and our improvement would be on offense if we had Bosh.
Both CAN be good defenders, when focused. LMA has been great when focused on defense. They both coast and aren’t held accountable by themselves or their teammates.

really bad… but for the purposes of this discussion, I would argue mostly irrelevant as an interior defender who puts forth great effort can make up for the failings of his teammates more than a perimeter defender can… therefore Bosh putting forth effort would yield a better result than Roy putting forth effort in terms of team defensive stats

Bosh is a GREAT power forward. Maybe the best, if not for Pau Gasol.
But he’s not a strong defender (LMA esque) and you can’t play through him for good offense at the end of games. He’s a great scorer and rebounder, and is clearly better than LMA. No debate there. But he isn’t as good at scoring or facilitating as a healthy Roy is.

It really only takes about an hour to do
But you are dead afterwards.
I ain’t great at pull ups, either. And I HATE push ups.
But, you get nice and sore and get an all-round workout. The other nights, we do weights and then I get some cardio.

i think the most pushups i could ever do in a row was 25. i’m super weak.
i used to be able to do a lot of situps though. and i’m light so pullups weren’t too difficult for me either.
i have horrible cardio. i’m way out of shape. i don’t think i could even run 2 miles.

I used to be awesome at situps
In 5th grade, I set the school record with 81 situps in 60 seconds.
I am not that good anymore :-) smile
I am generally out of shape, and my asthma makes cardio tough… I can’t run two miles, I wouldn’t be able to breathe. But I set the incline on the treadmill as high as it’ll go and do a brisk walk. It works good.

i’ve never been a good runner. the most in shape i ever was was probably high school tennis. and even then i couldn’t run very well. my heart and lung muscles just aren’t very strong or something i guess.

I don't like going to the gym
But I know myself, and I know that I do something I don’t really wanna do (even if I know I should) if I am held accountable more.
So, I am working out with my friend who knows his stuff and used to be a trainer. And I don’t wanna schedule something with him and not show up, so it makes me show up and do the work. And then I feel good!
If I had a treadmill here, I doubt I’d use it much.

i’m not gonna do that online dating thing. at least not any time soon. it’s stupidly expensive. i asked my roommate about it and it was 60 a month for a month by month basis or 240 for a year. that is insane. and that’s even before you’re paying for that actual dates.

"Insane" is a relative term
20 bucks a month is bearable if you’re otherwise sitting around the house and stink at dating, especially if you have a decent job.
They should have a college student rate. Though I assume college students already have facebook.
20 a month is reasonable.
but if i meet someone 3 months in there’s 80 bucks down the drain.
and i don’t know that i “stink” at dating. it’s just not a priority or an end all be all for me.

i’d almost rather pay 60 for one month and do it that way. the whole internet thing just seems very limiting to me for some reason. i’ve thought about it quite a lot and it just seems off for me after approaching it from many different angles. if i can’t feel good about it, i won’t try it.

That's exactly why they charge 60 for one month
Because a lot of people are like “I’ll meet someone in a month or two”, and that’s a whole lot of back-end work for anything less than a steep month-to-month fee.
i'd rather be set up by someone i know

Exactly
Online dating isn’t the only way, obviously, but it’s about (like we said before) putting yourself in the right situation to meet someone.
If your friends got potential ladies, than that could work. If they know someone cool!
I would just think you’d need to go outside your immediate circle to find that person… the proverbial “you”.
#52
well in the end, i don't think there is any rhyme or reason at all to this stuff.
it can happen any number of ways. online is one way. offline is another way. being set up is one way. or maybe someone just walks in the door at that is one way. who knows. it’s all a big mystery. i can try to “increase my odds” or whatever, but if it’s not meant to happen, it won’t. and if it is, it will. that doesn’t mean i can just sit around, i know that, but i would rather do something i think is worthwhile than jump on a current craze i’m skeptical of.

"Meant to happen" is relative
The odds that it’s meant to happen will increase with the more people you meet.
Never hurts to give yourself more options.
Full disclosure: I haven’t used the services, so I can’t comment on their effectiveness.
my whole point is that in this scenario, i do not believe in “odds”. there are no odds. i do not believe joining an online dating site will increase the “odds” that i find someone i would fall in love with. it might get me dates, but that’s not really what i’m looking for.

because "like minded"
isn’t the case. that is a selling point but it is not a certainty. besides, who says the person you fall in love with has to be like minded? putting “true love” into some sort of scientific formula about “like-mindedness” is silly to me. i can’t believe that is how love really works. if it was, i’d be married right now.

I think it just puts you in a situation to be surrounded
By others who also want a serious relationship. In regular life, that isn’t the case.
That’s what I mean by “like minded”. Finding someone similar to you isn’t the goal, it’s finding someone you are compatible with. And who is really hot.

I do agree
But, the only reason I suggest it as something good to try, is because of those I personally know who have had success from it.
In fact, back during my 4 month trip around Europe, the SEXIEST, hottest couple I met on the trip, was a super hot girl and a real handsome Aussie guy who met through Match.com and were now married and moving to Australia.
Your roommate didn’t have a good time with it, and so you got his feedback to counterbalance what I’ve been told, I guess. But I only suggest it because of the people I know… never because of some horrible ad.

Oh I just meant in general. It wasn't specific to you
If you’re otherwise single for a year and have a decent job, 80 bucks is a-ok as a sunk cost. Plus, I presume the account stays active if things don’t work out.
I don't understand those.
My counter space is too valuable for an appliance that’s just as easily replaced by a pitcher.
It brews it super fast and makes good tea
Before, I would boil tea in a pot on the stove top. It’s just easier and faster.

Plus, I drink a LOT of tea
It is replacing my diet soda drinking. I always feel thirsty and always want a drink of something, so I go through the tea super fast and like having something that makes it instantly.
#52
I reduced, but haven't given up.
I’ve made sure that when I have it, I have exactly what I want, and that’s it. Not just having soda to have soda.
I might still get some if I’m out with friends at Chipotle or something.
Soda is so bad and so good.
I'll have soda if it's sugar-based, not HFCS based
I like the cleaner, lighter taste. If I’m at Chipotle, I might get a diet drink, if I’m allowing myself to have caffeine at all.
And of course, there’s the exception day. When something is crazy, and I’m like “screw it, where’s the Dr. Pepper?” Happily, those are rare.
I bought the real sugar version of Pepsi over the holidays
I did like it, but it’s still too sweet for my taste buds.
I also only “really” like Splenda flavored diet soda, except for the Diet Coke With Splenda version… for whatever reason that one is gross.
I will drink other diet soda sometimes, but I tend to only buy the splenda sodas.
#52
I found regular soda too syrupy.
I also have found that sugar-based sodas have a little more variance in sweetness. I think it’s one of the problems the soda industry had with using sugar: HFCS stays fresh longer.

This will sound gross
But it wasn’t the caffeine I missed most (I get it from tea and from caffeine pills if need be, or Excedrin) but it was the carbonation in my mouth… I was so used to it, and my mouth didn’t feel as right without it… not as CLEAN.
I know, it sounds gross and weird. But I drank so much, I had to drink sumthin’ more natural.

I love the carbonation.
For me, it was when I got done with classes or a workout. Quick blood sugar boost before having to get food.
I felt like it helped me work
And cleanses the palette with a meal and stuff.
I don’t like sugary soda; it makes me more thirsty and I HATE being thirsty.

KC is a great city. i really enjoyed it there when i visited. being a baseball guy helped because of the baseball history there. the Negro League museum is really cool. and it’s right near the original Arthur’s BBQ place as well as the site of the old KC Monarch’s stadium (which is not an empty lot with a plague, tragically). it was like one of those bigger cities that feels like a small town.

I certainly wouldn't have a problem with KC
I’m just not sure what would take me there, except a cross-country road trip or an unexpected flight stopover.
I just turned to my wife (who hadn't heard this conversation)
and asked, “What reason would we ever have to go to Kansas City?”
Her reply?
“Barbecue?”
:)
haha. there you go.
take in a Royals game if you’re a baseball fan. great stadium. very laid back. if you just want a relaxing vacation that is sort of a “home away from home” type place but you don’t have to worry about work or whatever, i would recommend KC.

That must be major airport
because getting stuck in Sitka is pretty bad, especially if they close the only place to eat in the airport.
Gates BBQ in KC
is also pretty awesome. There are tons of small independent BBQ places there as well….like the Smokestack (yummmmmmmm). But it’s all good.
I have to travel to KC several times a year for business. The main difference with KC BBQ and that in North Carolina or Tennessee is that they BBQ all kinds of meats in KC. In North Carolina, as well as in Tennessee, BBQ means pork….period. In KC, it’s pretty much any meat.
Attending pretty much any sporting event in KC is fun…..the fans take it so seriously, but are incredibly polite.

If you ever go to Memphis, you will probably be craving BBQ by the time you get off the plane
Why?
Because the entire airport smells like BBQ.
You can store it next to the pitcher when not in use.
I also appreciate the Alton Brown “never use unitaskers!” concept, but there are a few really useful unitaskers. I love my hot chocolate maker.

he doesn’t really get that many minutes with brandon back.
but his shooting off the bench lately seems pretty good.
his defense is still very hand oriented instead of foot oriented, but he seems to be thinking about getting in position to draw charges, and being successful sometimes.
can you back any of those casual observations with stats? or am i way off?
His feet have been super fast
Really good at staying in front of people, though I remember he got over zealous on one play against Calderon and Calderon went right by him. But that’s been the exception.
I love Rice’s stat saying Bayless has led the league in 3 point percentage for the month of March.
#52
lol
so true, it’s his wiry self, he’d get injured every other game if he did, and i think he knows it…
that's why they are a great combo
they can both shoot, and create (bayless better at getting to the bucket before passing, rudy better at just tricky angles and creative passing)
but they can both potentially lob alley oops to each other, which is cool.
Still, neither is that great brining the ball up the floor and initiating the offense.
They're a fun duo who can break a team's back together.
Few 2nd units got guys as talented as Bayless and Rudy.
#52
oh. Rice said he was 67% from the month of March, and he only missed one agin Toronto. So I assumed 4-6.

"I’ve gone so long in my life not being that way. Now, I got to turn more aggressive, more mean. I’ve never been one to be a [expletive]. But sometimes on the court, you have to be a [expletive]."
GET MEAN, BRANDON
The change in mentality, to me, came when he tried to dunk it hard and was fouled. Then it was like, oooh… Roy doesn’t wanna lose.
#52
Wow.
"Every day, I got to prepare and it’s not just a switch," Roy said. "Kobe was saying that. We were about to play in the All-Star game, and he said, ‘Let’s go hard.’ I said, ‘Why do you want to play so hard in the All-Star game?’ He said, ‘It’s not a switch. You have to do it every day.’

On offense, what weakness does he have?
He can hit from anywhere on the court and get to the rim against almost any defender. He can hit in the clutch.
He can make the pass, as well.
What holes does he have as a scorer? None.
To me, his biggest hole we’ve seen on offense, was his ability to incorporate an Oden type player (like, say, Greg Oden) into the offense and missing him when wide open repeatedly. But that can be fixed with time— it’s a big change for everyone.
That, plus his lack of defensive intensity throughout a regular season. Otherwise… not much wrong with him, at all.

It’s the sneaky way to look nice by complimenting someone else all while giving yourself a big compliment too.

Yes, but when did Kobe seem to care about looking nice before?
Also, isn’t D-Wade, Joe Johnson, Melo, Dirk, LJ, etc. looking at this and thinking ‘hey what about me?’

I'm not saying he's wrong
I just think it’s funny, even if unintentional, because it’s a sly way to boast while being nice as well.
#52
Yes, I would think about that also.
If Kobe said this before every game about the other team’s best player.
#10 & #52
Perhaps
but when was the last time Dirk dunked on somebodies face? LeBron’s mid-range game needs work.
It's true.
I sometimes wonder if I’m being a homer, but I think Kobe is exactly right that Brandon is most of the most versatile and effective offensive weapons in the NBA right now.
Just still surprised that he would call attention to Brandon like that.

Roy is a very fluid post player. Just because Melo is more physically dominating doesn’t mean Roy isn’t very skillful.
I think Melo and Lebron and Wade, whoever
Are better scorers than Roy.
But if we’re saying Roy doesn’t really have any offensive weaknesses, I’d have to agree. Better shooter and post player than Lebron, better passer than Melo, etc.

Kobe is a hypocrite!!!!
Roy said. "Kobe was saying that. We were about to play in the All-Star game, and he said, ‘Let’s go hard.’ I said, ‘Why do you want to play so hard in the All-Star game?’ He said, ‘It’s not a switch. You have to do it every day.’

wow...
yeah, Timmay, that was sad.
but not cruel. just sad in that ironic sort of way, which is what makes it kind of funny. i think the problem is that they let it go past funny to sad then to funny again but then just long enough to be sad again. and the last shot of the dog lying his head down is the dagger. they should have just done one cycle and it might have been funnier.
i don’t mind the ending though.
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
That was the only ending I felt was over-the-top
I don’t think the ending is necessary (or proper) when you’re normally a light-hearted show. It’s like you build a trust with the viewer that this is a show you can enjoy, and they break it with that scene.
Imagine if you were watching it live, with no knowledge or warning that ending was coming up.
As you can tell, it’s far worse than the episode with Fry’s brother, or the written in the stars episode.
And I say all this as a huge Futurama fan.
We have every episode available inside the network here. Except one.
it was probably their most downer ending, i would agree.

this ending is tragic though not without real life application.

That's the response for fans of the ending
“It’s much more like real life”
But of course, most folks aren’t watching a cartoon comedy about a guy unfrozen in the year 3000 to see real life.
(For the record, I think Jake thinks it’s one of their best endings I believe. When he gets here, he’ll likely comment).
The whole thing is indeed ret-conned in Bender’s Big Score. It was never their intent for that to be the dog’s fate, so they ret-conned it the first chance they got.
i think i’ve seen that movie but can’t remember it.

The movies are only ok. I like movies 1 and 3 the most.
If you plan to see it, the order of the four movies is…
1. Bender’s Big Score (not bad, tons of time travel). The dog storyline is retconned here.
2. The Beast with a Billion Backs (ugh)
3. Bender’s Game (some people hate it, I enjoyed it)
4. Into the Wild Green Yonder (meh)
But all 4 movies sold really well on DVD, and the series returns in June for a long-awaited new season.
They resolved a big storyline at the end of the last movie, since it was expected to be the end of the series. I’m not sure how they’ll revert that for the new season, but it’s likely necessary.
i’ve seen 1 and 2. 2 was more memorable but not very. haven’t seen 3 or 4.
i knew it was coming back. didn’t know it was in June though. that’s cool.

There is a lot to be said about just needing an oppourtunity to show that you can play
I think that explains a lot of what seems to happen in terms of the strength of draft classes, every 10 years or so there is an especially deep draft (1984, 1996, 2003). I think that it happens to also closely coincide with older stars starting to fade away, thus giving oppourtunities to play that other draft classes didn’t have.
It also is that the Spurs have a talent
For pulling guards out of nowhere that are good.

Considering there’s no sign KP is planning to make any major draft moves this year to get another young talent?

I'll definitely watch the lottery, since where Wall and Turner land, other guards could become available
As for our positioning, yeah I’m not terribly focused on that this year. I predict a combo guard and a PF.
Yep, I'll watch the lottery, and will enjoy watching trades and positioning the week of the draft
But that’s really it. I tend to get to know the players as draft date approaches.
Is it spicy?

Cab and I like different stuff
Their tacos (soft or crisp), burritos, or burrito bowls (which is exactly as it sounds, just no tortilla and you use a fork) are great. I haven’t tried their fajitas. They have hidden options as well.
They have a mild tomato pico de gallo that’s very good. I prefer their medium and hot salsa, the wife likes the corn salsa. If you get chips (they’re tasty, salty and awful for you!) you should tell them it’s your first time there, and you’d like to try a few different salsas. Most Chipotle branches will hook you up.
Cab likes barbacoa as you know. The wife prefers carnitas (pulled pork) but likes them all. I prefer chicken. Honestly, they’re all good.
I'll prolly get a big ol' burrito without beans (don't care for beans)
And some soft tacos and pig out.
And if it ain’t a grip of da bomb, i’m comin’ for you guys.
#52
They'll customize whatever you want
If you don’t want beans, but do want extra rice of meat, you should let them know. They’ll normally take care of you.
Yessssssssssssssssssss
I dunno if it’s a chain, but I’ve been addicted to these HUGE friggin’ “california burritos” from a place called Taco Plus.
They but in sooooo much carne asada, and it’s good meat, and the guac is good, and sour cream and cheese and good pico…. MMMMMMMMMM I WANT ONE NOW.
#52
I'm really curious what you'll think of Chipotle now.
They have a big burrito. It’s similar in size to Taco Del Mar, but I suspect that won’t help.
I always get Black beens in mines
Doesn’t matter what meat……and no way I could eat the burrito and the tacos ….I would explode

I've never seen a quick-serve mexican restaurant with free chips
Unless they’re cheap ones. Chipotle does fresh chips every morning and it shows.
They’re also using the highest quality ingredients around. They source their ingredients closely.
We used to go to Baja Fresh
But we haven’t been there in years… the ones around here just aren’t impressive.
The ones here are decent at least.
I liked Rubios a lot. I think they also have free chips, but it’s been awhile.
#10 & #52
La Salsa has free chips, too
I can’t remember which is better out of Baja Fresh and La Salsa, but one is better than the other but neither better than what I get at Taco Plus.
#52
I can't comment on Taco Plus
though it does look like a place I’d try out.
Btw if you feel like you didn’t get enough of something at Chipotle (salsa, cheese, whatever), just ask for a little more. They’ll take care of you.
Sometimes if you ask for a side of salsa, the person will not give you a totally full one. Ask for a second side, and no problem. They’ll usually go out of the way to do whatever you want.
Today I walked by someone who had a bowl of black beans. Period.
But now that I've said Taco Plus is so good
People will go there and be disappointed :-( I have to add I only get one thing regularly, and that is the aforementioned California Burrito.
I definitely wanna try Chipotle, add some variety to my quick Mexican food diet.
#52
I like ez spiciness, lotsa meat and cheese and yumminess
If they got lots of yumminess on hand, than I’ll be happy.
#52
Oh I don't think Chipotle can hold up to what we said either
I didn’t want to say “We stopped going to Baja Fresh because we found Chipotle”.. that’s just building it up too much.
The first time we had Chipotle food, we thought it was ok. It was the second visit when we found combinations that clicked for us.
Man, all this talk about food
Has made me so hungry. But I gotta work out soon :-(
And I already prepped my post-workout meal, and it isn’t Mexican food :-( So sad :-(

He wouldn't.
But he’d think about it for a few minutes.
Roy is KP’s chosen horse for the race to a championship. He’s made his decision.
I also wouldn’t do it, since you could hardly bake a better all-around franchise player than Roy both on and off the court. Also nobody yet knows if Wall will continue to build on his game, how big his will to win is when facing pro defenses, etc. In terms of athletic ability, I’m incredibly high on him. I think he can be better than Rose, maybe better than Wade. That’s pretty incredible. And Turner could be a franchise player too, though maybe not the 1a player on a team. E.g. the Wolves should kill to get him.

I always like the speculation
and it’s not just the draft it’s all the crazy trades that go with the draft. As if adding a late 1st rounder to a lopsided trade is what’ll convince the other team to let us fleece them.
If the Jazz get the first pick via NY then they obviously don’t need Wall. We do a 3 way trade to get Wall while only giving up our draft pick and Joel’s EC
"In Batum's case he must realize he is very likely the first Blazer to successfully fight over a pick all season..."

I didnt think the Spurs would drop to 9th, but if anyone else thinks so, I think you should change your mind.
#52
Hey, if they don't resign Manu
Do they got cap space?
I guess not… Jefferson is spendy, as are Duncan and Parker.
Did Jefferson blow their chance to get cap space? If so, BUFAILORD.
#52
No cap space this year, unless Jefferson uses his ETO. Which, for $15 million, is about as likely as Eddy Curry using his. But they could use their MLE for Splitter, and they’ll have loads of cap space for 2011 ($29 million committed unless Duncan opts out) and 2012 (only Blair, and a QO for Hill).
I think he has waited long enough not to be

He didn’t sign for 3 seasons, so they now can offer him up to the full MLE on a 3-year guaranteed deal
Ahhhh, interesting.
He seems like he’d be a good role playing big man. Do you think he can be more?
If he even exists, I mean.
#52
We’ll have to see. I don’t think he’ll be a “star”. But he is big, he is mobile, he is efficient. I think he could be the center version of Luis Scola for sure. It would definitely not hurt the Spurs to have him play a bit behind/besides Duncan, and then have him locked up for when TD calls it quits.
It’s not easy with those guys until you see them play against NBA bigs. When journalists first started talking about Splitter, they also though Maciej Lampe could be really good (the Knicks especially). I think I sometimes rounded out my roster in NBA Live with him. Or this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damir_Markota
But Splitter is doing very well on a good team and now really has experience and not just potential.
I think Splitter will be good
he moves well and has size. That’s the key to be a good Euro big, plus the skills!
#52
BRP has no luck with Granger. After already having a smaller knee injury, he just got hit in the head and was helped off the floor.
Ditto.
They promoted him as an effort to keep him, less than a year ago.
I’m very curious what went down.
I'm wondering if he said something during one of his recent public appearances.
Being on camera isn’t his specialty.
Penn recently returned from a scouting trip at the Big East championships and appeared on Rip City Live, the pregame show of Comcast SportsNet, before Sunday’s game against Toronto.
Way sudden it, it seems. I can’t even think of what it’d be.
#52
Personal indiscretion/transgression?
I have to say I have no idea. He was at the side of KP and PA until the very end. This is very sudden.

It's very strange that he was fired
Normally execs “resign”. This come across as an intentional message sent.
I think it's probably best to wait and see what the reasoning was...
Usually high-level execs don’t get fired without a valid reason. Especially one like Penn, who we promoted to keep just 10 months ago.
Probably doing coke with Horford.

Perhaps his executive dating system showed statistically, Penn wasn't KP's best match
If that’s the case, he needed to make a clean break and start dating. You gotta trust statistical analysis.

There are some rumors he might be in the running for the Clippers GM job, though they seemed to have promoted one of their assistant GMs and former player development coach
But “fired” doesn’t sound like “we thank him for everything and wish him luck, we just couldn’t hold him anymore this time”. If that would be the case, Quick would have caused a major wording blunder imho.
plus didn’t they promote Penn so he wouldn’t get the GM job with the T’Wolves? why would they let him go now?

Like most executives and coaches in the league, he has an agent for things like that. And that agent is allowed to talk to anyone.
I currently rather think it has to do with spending some of Allen’s money where he didn’t have authorization for.
Taking the NCAA players out to dinner for example.

A very sound theory... but boring. Let's get creative!
Penn was caught with Al Horford at Sassy’s doing lines of coke of strippers’ bums that was bought with PA’s money.

Was there a pic of Bo Outlaw too?
I guess that joke doesn’t work anymore with Trout gone. That kind of makes me sad.

Penn had been rubbing people the wrong way internally.
And there were rumors he was quietly talking to the Clippers, who recently fired their GM.
The front page is updated with links to the articles with new details.
Smells funny to be sure

Do you remember where you were when Tom Penn was fired?
Oooooph I am beat after that workout. Man. Was rough. Now eating my post-workout meal.
I see there isn’t any new word on Tom Penn… calling him a guy looking to keep climbing the ladder describes almost any successful, smart person.
#52
Quick has updated his story with a few quotes from Penn
Penn says he did not talk to another team, and that he was surprised by the firing.
I wouldn't expect that two timing back stabbing jerk to say anything else!
Ya know, I may not have ever said it here on BE, or to anyone in person, but I knew deep down that that Tom Penn guy just wasn’t to be trusted. Could just tell.
#52
Ben once confirmed his ambitious nature. Apart from that, nothing I’ve heard today is a convincing reason so far. And ambition is not a reason to get fired in a competitive “up or out” environment.
I would imagine someone ambitious and hard working and out to make a name for themself
Is great to have, so there’s gotta be a lot more there for it to be so sudden and surprising and mysterious.
#52
Yeah nothing is wrong with ambition for an NBA exec.
I don’t think the released rumors were specifically about his ambition.
Like you
I am assuming those “ambitious” lines in the recent article are said for the reader to “read between the lines”.
As to what is between those lines, I dunno. I am also assuming that “ambition” is not the reason he was fired.
#52
Yep.
People normally don’t get fired for being ambitious. They normally get fired for their actions caused by their ambition.
Then again, that’s third-hand rumors. It could be just some jealous exec making stuff up.
Like backstabbing KP somehow to try to get his job

I hope nothing TOO shady is going on
And I gotta think that while we may not find someone as accomplished and smart at the CBA crap as Penn, we gotta be able to find someone else or a team of someone elses who can pick up where he left off. I’d hope.
#52
oh, out of everything, I feel confident that they already had a replacement selected when they fired him. We hire everyone.
The next in line is often the video coordinator. That would be Tim Grass I think. They also have a Director of Basketball Operations. Could also be Born or Buchanan, the head scouts. Kaleb Canales is only a coach I think, though he has also worked on some of the player relations stuff.
Penn was here for his CBA know-how and loophole finding I thought
Not necessarily for his basketball know-how.
Ya need a guy (or a team of guys) like him to know how to put together the deals with the complicated CBA, but it can’t be something irreplaceable, like a guy who is a great judge of talent.
The rules are set, and aren’t really open to interpretation. Just a matter of knowing all of them.
#52
Larry Miller is our representative in CBA negotiations
Peter Holt (Spurs), James Dolan (Knicks), Larry Miller (Trail Blazers), Wyc Grousbeck (Celtics), Clay Bennett (Thunder), Robert Sarver (Suns), George Shinn (Hornets), Jeanie Buss (Lakers), Dan Gilbert (Cavaliers), and Glen Taylor (Timberwolves).
