JD - 3/15 Bracket Disaster Edition
So, if you're like me, you've spent less time watching college basketball than ever before. For whatever reason this makes me more confident about my picks. Also, since my college team of choice enjoyed yet another glorious season of losing (in one of the weakest major conferences in NCAA history I might add) the little time I have watched has been spent mostly watching other teams. If we were judged on picking the first two rounds, ya'll would be in trouble against me. When the games get important, my picks are clutch like Rod Strickland in the 91 Western Conference Finals.

Depends on the year
But a lot of it in my experience is sheer luck. I’ve been running a pool which has grown to about 200 people (mostly people I grew up with/college friends) and 8 of the 12 years I ran the pool someone who knew next to nothing about basketball (forget college BB) won. Only once has a former player won (and because I was close with the BB team in college I have most of our men’s and woman’s teams on there, including one former three-time D3 all-American) placed (finished top 5).

Agreed
This is why I had my bracket picked almost before the selection show was off the air.
It was funny though. The ESPN Insider tool basically rates my bracket as “you are zaching crazy and stupid.” even though its conservative for me.

Better have lots of filler material for that game
Which shouldn’t be that hard given the upset of Cuse by Vermont a few years back (which I actually picked correctly). Not going to happen this year.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yah, but they need Gus for any game that has upset potential.
He’s over the top, but there’s nothing better than hearing some enthusiasm from the play by play guy when a big first round upset is in the making. Gus is the ideal 1st and 2nd round PBP guy.

I am warning everyone that will listen that Temple is flat out a better team than Cornell
They cruised through the best A10 in years. Cornell coach Steve Donahue worked under Temple coach Fran Dunphy at Penn. Dunphy has never lost a game to any of his former assistants. Temple is the best in the country at defending the perimeter, potentially canceling Cornell’s #1 strength.
I am telling everyone that picking Cornell is only a smart play if your pool has upset bonus points. Cornell is becoming a trendy pick because everyone loves an Ivy League darling. Cornell over Temple is only the 3rd most likely 12/5 upset. Utah State over T A&M and UTEP over Butler are much more likely.

no, you know I’m a pessimist, but I believe every word I wrote there. Cornell can win— Temple doesn’t blow out teams, so this one will probably stay close enough to at least give Cornell a chance— but Temple is really good.

nope
they guaranteed they’d have it posted by 5 Eastern today, and in typical inept Cornell Athletics fashion, they are going right down to the wire. Honestly, how hard would it be to have the lottery’s for all 8 sites already done before hand. Pathetic.

That kind of stuff happened to me allllll the time my rookie year
It stopped once my “overall” rating was about 80.
I’d be DOMINATING, in 1st place for the MVP race, and we’d trade for Keyon Dooling and I’d go back to the end of the bench.
Or, every once in a while, for no reason, D’Antoni would sit me and play Toney Douglas over me. It was lame. Just had to re-earn my starting spot back.
What is your overall rating? It seems to be tied to that, I say… for initial playing time, anyways.
#52
it is 71 right now. i’ve been raising up my awareness categories cause i started to wonder if my overall rating would help me be more consistent. i think it might have done that actually.
i’m in my 2nd year now too and i’ve been starting and everything. hopefully they’ll trade the backup PG and Iverson will take over that role. but i looked at the rotations and i went from getting the most minutes on the team (24 in a 28 minute game) to only 11.
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
by DrivetheLane on Mar 15, 2010 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions
It's an annoying feature
Yeah, raising those other categories will help your overall rating, but I still say it boils down to the athleticism stats— get those maxed, then you’ll always be able to outplay your teammates to get the minutes back if ya lose them because your overall rating isn’t high enough.
What you’ll gotta do now, is play awesome, and earn your role back. Then, what always happened to me with the other PGs on the Knicks, is that they start complaining once I take my role back from them, and they get traded.
If your minutes are down to 11 a game, just make sure they’re a gangbusters 11 minutes. Soon, after a few games, you’ll be back to what you had before and Iverson will want a trade.
#52
To me, though, DTL...
…and you gotta know I only want you to succeed like I have…
Any day playing 2K10 that isn’t spent maxing out your athleticism stats, is wasted day.

85 right now, i believe.
i don’t just hold turbo down the whole game, but i use it quite a bit. my stamina is fine. i’m gonna start upping my speed. it’ll take me a lot of games to get it to 99. i’m at 71 now. my quickness is at 70. those are the two that i gotta get moving now. i think everything else is ok for the time being.
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
by DrivetheLane on Mar 15, 2010 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Stamina at 99 is important too
It’s actually the first thing I get to 99, so I can use turbo more, which means more dunks, more steals, more getting seperation from my man so I break down the defense, etc.
I think you got a good foundation, DTL, but you need a 2K10 coach to get the most out of you. Anything below 90-something for stamina is unacceptable.
#52
hahaha. ok, Mort.
i can’t dunk either. it’s only at 40 right now. my dunk rating was stupidly low for a 6’6" SG. started out at 26. lame.
my average teammate rating is A+ now. i get about 1200-1450 points a game (depending on how many of the objectives i meet). i’ve just spread the points around quite a bit instead of focusing on one thing over and over. so i’m pretty high in all around stuff. all the important ones are at least 70.
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
by DrivetheLane on Mar 15, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Just remember this
It is more important to raise the right skill 1 point, than the wrong skill 5 points.
I think you’ve spent a lot on the shooting stats, which is fine because you don’t handle the ball as much as me since you’re the SG and not the PG, but don’t put anymore into them.
Even with 40 dunk skill, I’d think you’d be dunking at least when wide open, not tired, and using turbo. Before I had my stamina real good, I wasn’t dunking at the end of quarters or the end of games much at all, even on breakaway steals.
Here is my gameplan for you. Do not deviate it from it, no matter what, not even if raising your “consistency” stat is all you dreamed of.
STEP 1: Get Stamina to 99.
STEP 2: Get Quickness to 99.
STEP 3. Get Speed to 99.
Now, there will be some exceptions… if you get a bunch of skill points at once because of a milestone or whatever, then use them ALL on SPEED, over everything else. Most normal games, you should get enough to increase stamina or quickness just from your normal points you earn from a single game.
Just do those 3 skills, then report back to me. I urge you, do not put a single skill point in something else until you spend as much as you can on those 3.
THE EXCEPTION: Let’s say you got 1800 skill points to spend, and you use it all on Stamina. But you got, like, 175 left. It is ok, if you choose, to use that on something else, like steals. Or rebounding. That can be your choice.
Otherwise, stop being a jack of all trades and master of none, and get your athletic stats MAXED. OUT. Then you will be the best SG in the game!

Portland 109, Toronto 98
I love offense. While watching the late showing of “Winning Time” last night, my better half couldn’t understand why I was making these involuntary gagging noises as the documentary reeled off some of the final scores from the 1994 Eastern Conference finals: 78 points, 68 points. Winning with 88 points. Ugh. I miss some of that, but overall? Good riddance.
This game? This was hard to watch. It honestly was, because the defense was so bad on either end. Both teams are slow-down scorers, so the raw score didn’t reek of a 132-121 Phoenix win over the Warriors, but the defense was just as bad as those two teams at their worst.
Portland scored 109 points in an 80 possession game, and that’s pretty bad. I respect Portland’s offense a great deal and like that team a lot, but that’s just miserable defense, Toronto. And it was exactly what you would expect after seeing that Portland made 12-20 three-pointers: Toronto just didn’t close out. Didn’t even consider it.
The Blazers weren’t much better, defensively. The Trail Blazers had 136.5 points per 100 possessions, 122 points per 100 for Toronto. Stinko.
this was a good take
And a big reason to be concerned about the future of the Blazers. Great teams have a defensive ethos instilled in them from the get-go, and never turn off that defensive intensity. The Blazers prefer to win with offense. If this is going to be a dominant team, performances like last night on the defensive end have to be considered unacceptable.
Great teams have a defensive ethos instilled in them from the get-G.O.

i think atomic’s point about a defensive mindset is good though. This team doesn’t seem to have it, no matter how much they say they do. Aside from Batum, Oden, Przybilla, and Camby are there any other players on this team who seem committed to the defensive end all game every game? I don’t think so. the mindset just isn’t there.

some of it is innate, but i think that is for the great defenders, like Batum, GO, and Przy. the rest of it is coaching. a good coaching should be able to coax the defense out of them. Cause really, it’s about knowing that defense will win you a championship. if you want to win…..you HAVE to play defense all game long.

Like Dwyer said
your offense can go sour, but you have to be able to count on your defense to keep you in games.
i don’t know. I think guys like Howard and Camby need to be the ones to approach Roy, perhaps in private, perhaps not, and tell him he needs to get the team to focus on defense. who knows. the inter-team social dynamics are kinda lost on me. But I agree with Atomic: Roy is the guy that needs to lead by example on the defensive end.

i’m not sure either…but he does seem different. i don’t know why, but the idea that his ego has gotten big is nagging at me. like he doesn’t think he needs to try on defense because he can carry the team on offense. i’ve also wondered if all the iso offense at the end of games is Nate or Roy saying to Nate: give me the ball and i’ll be the super star.
Roy has been mildy worrisome to me this year.

I’m not worried about his ego, cause it hasn’t shown up off the court, I’m concerned that he feels he was tired at the end of last season and is conserving for the playoffs (which if he can turn it on and do well then, I’ll be OK with)

It's the whole structure
When Bayless screws up a read on the offensive end and misses an open Roy, Nate and Roy make sure he knows what he’s done wrong. If somebody blows an assignment on defense, there’s not the same kind of inquest. So whoever has the stature within the locker room to make the supporting players know the importance of defense is fine with me.
I get the feeling that Batum (as a relatively green second year guy) and Camby (as a newcomer) probably don’t have that kind of standing. With a young team, a lot of the impetus for leadership has to come from the coach, and as I mentioned above, he also is much more invested in offense than defense.
IIRC GO was doing a bit of that on the defensive end before he got hurt… I remember Przy doing that as well

Teams that have an amazing offense and an amazing defense
tend to be the types of teams that win championships

Something witty will go here soon
by The Arkitect on Mar 15, 2010 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions
exactly
Defense is a team effort, and great defensive teams pull together and fight harder than ever when their best defenders get hurt. Maybe they aren’t as effective, but it hurts just as much when they get scored on.
Part of this is that I don’t think we really have a defensive leader. Our two “top dogs” (LA and Roy) are not only offensively oriented, they frequently simply eschew defensive effort.
Even though we have good individual defenders DTL listed above, it’s much more difficult to get everybody to buy in when the top scorers aren’t leading by example. The only way to really rectify this is to get Roy to step into this role, play hard on defense, and get after guys who don’t.

we have had a better defensive C than GO in Joel for the last several years
and we have still sucked on D.
We are a poorly coached defensive team, and we have 2 key players who are lazy, terrible defenders.
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

And we persist with playing Juwan as if he’s a key player, despite him being perhaps the worst defender on the roster. He gives you all the bad of LaMarcus without the ability to switch out on picks. I think Nate only continues playing Juwan because he has no real sense for the defensive end of the floor.
Playing Juwan as many minutes as we do is grounds for Nate's immediate dismissal lMO
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

I continue to argue that LMA isn’t a bad one on one defender… he doesn’t know his rotations all the time for help D, and he’s not a shot blocker, but he is a good match-up defender

That's why I said I'd ban myself for a year if the Blazers got out of the first round
Andre Miller couldn’t guard that chair that was guarding Yi Jianlian in his workout video. The Blazers need a proven veteran that will play defense and motivate/yell at his teammates to play better defense. Instead he thinks because he runs the offense, that Batum should do his defense for him.

Six juveniles, ages 16 and 17, and five young men, ages 18 to 20, were arraigned Thursday on counts of first-degree theft and organized retail theft, a felony defined by state lawmakers three years ago.
Maybe those were the “young men”. Still I don’t like it to show young people with their face and name in the paper, at least as long as they have been accused and not convicted. Nobody of them is old enough to drink, but apparently old enough to be publicly embarrassed. Shouldn’t happen.
i personally believe they should
Those guys are all over 18 and Matt Murphy is a really cocky kid, you can see from his comments. If their old enough to steal 20 thousand dollars worth of jeans then their old enough to be put through the embarrassment
Odenized
in the US if you’re over 18 that is old enough to have your picture shown in regards to criminal activity. personally, i think it’s fine as hopefully the public embarrassment will make these people think twice before they commit a crime again. (thought it likely won’t) as for not being convicted, they were caught on security tape and in that very story one of them admitted to stealing stuff.
legal drinking age doesn’t have anything to do with it.

they’re facing felonies, which in itself appears to be the greatest punishment. i aint no lawer, but i’d guess they’ll try to plea out of that somehow. as is, it looks to be pretty hot water; not guilty will give whoever is in charge sometime to sort things out.
by EvilKaramazov on Mar 15, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions
that makes sense
I would think that good legal counsel would encourage the kids to plead guilty to a misdemenor because that won’t wreck your life nearly as much as a felony will.
I’ve seen that, it’s just that when you are under 18 or under 21 you are considered a junior in many criminal systems. And it doesn’t seem right to me to publish the full name and photo of someone who is not yet legally convicted. Even most tabloids wouldn’t do that in Europe – by their own decision or by law. They would pixelate faces or put a black box over the eyes, and use pseudonyms or write “suspect Matt. M”.
18 is old enough to be tried as an adult here.
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].
by DrivetheLane on Mar 15, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure. Theft however is a typical “coming-of-age” crime, though in this case it was clearly planned and organized which makes things worse. As the “felony” charge indicts. Between age 18 – 20 you can of course get tried and convicted for all crimes in much of the world, but sentences are often way shorter.

In the US
arrest records are public records and as such are available for review by the media. In theory, if someone is arrested and a big hoopla results, and then they are found innocent, there should be just a such publicity to allow the person to clear their name. There should also be a LOT of uses of the word alleged in any media coverage before a conviction.
At least that’s how it;s supposed to work here.

i still dont know what to make of the bracket this year. this is what i got so far:
1) i hate this matchup for cornell. any other 5 seed and i pick them to make it to the sweet 16. i took temple, but hopefully they win anyways
2) baylor is the best team in the south region.
3) utep, washington, and st mary’s are the double digit seeds i have in the sweet 16
4) purdue will beat siena
5) final 4: kansas, kentucky, baylor, syracuse
6) i have byu in the elite 8
in my bedge bracket i just picked the opposite of
what i picked for upsets in the junk bracket so hopefully i was either very wrong or very right with my initial picks, mediocrity would be worse case scenario

1) yeah, Temple’s perimeter defense could be killer for Cornell. I don’t like it the matchup. The positives for Cornell are that Temple tends to play low scoring games (sometimes keeping an inferior team close), doesn’t force turnovers and doesn’t get to the foul line. I think Michigan State and Butler would have been tough matchups for Cornell also. T A+M, Purdue w/o Hummel, Vandy and any of the 6 seeds would have been better though.
2) Duke is better than Baylor, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears win.
3) I like Utah State or Siena to get to the sweet 16, very possibly playing each other in round 2. I have USU winning.
4) I agree, but its close to a tossup.
5) Kansas, West Virginia, Duke, Cuse
6) me too.

your announcers for the tourney
New Orleans, LA: Dick Enberg, Jay Bilas
Providence, RI: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery
Oklahoma City, OK: Kevin Harlan, Dan Bonner
San Jose, CA: Spero Dedes, Bob Wenzel
Jacksonville, FL: Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg
Buffalo, NY: Gus Johnson, Len Elmore
Milwaukee, WI: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel
Spokane, WA: Tim Brando, Mike Gminski
Thoughts:
-Enberg needs to retire. He was unbelievably bad in the pac-10 final (misidentyfing players, calling shots 3s when they were clearly 2s, etc). I like Bilas as a broadcaster, even if he’s lost his mind picking Cornell for the elite 8.
-Lundquist needs to retire also. Raftery I like.
-Harlan/Bonner will be one of the better teams, even though I don’t know who Bonner is. I really like Harlan.
-Dedes isn’t terrible. Wenzel is meh.
- Nantz is incredibly boring. I really wish he’d stick to golf. Kellogg is pretty decent.
- Gus FTW!! There need to be some upsets in Buffalo, please.
- Eagle/Spanarkel do a great job on the Nets broadcasts.
- meh

And we got the matchups in our favor, except for PG.

Over 7 games, no way we lose. NO. WAY. We got ‘em matched up and their strength (defense) won’t stop our strength, offense, and our weakness (defense) won’t get abused by their weakness (offense)!

Jake, they do not match up with us, at all. That’s one of the few guys that LMA would immediately laugh at and demolish. It’s a team that relies upon forcing turnovers to create offense, and we don’t turn it over. It’s a team that relies on a scorer who we have a nice matchup for, and the scorer has struggled in pressure moments thus far.
Their point differential, with key members of their team having missed 4 games, is .4 better than us. I am astounded by the greatness.

So I keep hearing from NBA reporters how Monty Williams won't be tge next coach of Oregon because he's more likely
Going to get a head coaching job in the NBA. It’s got me thinking, if that’s true then why not pull a move a la bellotti/Kelly and replace Nate with Monty in the offseason? Nate is on a year to year contract no? We could get him before anyone else, so why not? Anyways it’s something to think about…
I was blinded to that by sick alley-oops and facials

If people got problems with the coaching staff
I don’t think hiring someone on Nate’s staff is the answer.
#52
Of course, that's what they said about Mike Schuler's staff.
(I’m not sure how good Monty would be, for the record)
How close was Adelman to Schuler though?
Nate and Monty and Dean are pretty close… with Dean and Monty being big Outlaw fans, zone fans… shoot, Monty think Deron is the best PG. He’s spent most of his coaching career learning from Nate.
He might be an awesome head coach but I don’t think we’ve seen anything that suggests it. Only those who know him could reasonably predict something like how he’d coach. I think his name only comes up because we know him (not blastin’ anyone, jus’ keepin’ it real).
#52
I also don't know if Monty would be a good fit.
If KP said Monty was our guy, I’d keep an open mind about him. Even with the comments you mentioned, I think he’s really an unknown quantity.
now, he did come from the Spurs. So maybe he would try to implement a motion offense and actually be pretty cool.
by Cablinasian on Mar 15, 2010 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I would trust KP on it too
Because he would know those assistants a LOT better than I do.
I just don’t see Monty thinking “Man, Nate is going about this ALL WRONG”.
#52
I know Dean wouldn't think that, but I'm not sure about Monty.
I don’t feel like I know Monty that well.
I think he seems like a player development coach
Not an X’s and O’s dude. I don’t think we’ve heard much from him on that end… more a guy who the players like, get along with him, and he can help develop ’em.
#52
I bet he would be an improvement
Dean D would be torture. It would be zone 24/7.

Portland Trail Blazers announced today that Monty Williams has been named to the team’s assistant coaching staff. Williams joins new Trail Blazers Head Coach Nate McMillan after serving last year as a coaching staff intern under Gregg Popovich for the San Antonio Spurs.
Those interns must get the full low-down on all the Spurs do.
#52
Now don't get me wrong
Monty might be an awesome coach. I think he seems like a great guy and I like the development we’ve gotten from our wings.
But I don’t think we, the regular fan who follows everything, has seen anything to suggest he’d be a better or DIFFERENT head coach.

Fo sho.
I’m all for an upgrade at coach. The question is, who is a clear upgrade?

Free AK1984
Yeah I'm in agreement here
But Monty could be to KP as KP was to Paul Allen. We won’t know until a coaching change is necessary.
Before he became GM though
We had a pretty good idea about KP… his comments when he coached the team, the reports of him being in charge of the 2006 draft, his constant interviews… lots more to be able to judge him with.
Monty gets a lot of support from fans because we know who he is, and he looks like a coach, and we don’t know enough about him to know one thing or another.
Like I said, he might be awesome, but I’d only predict it once I know what he thinks about something other than developing wings.
#52
Yep. It could simply be that KP is more tight-lipped about coaching.
So we’re pretty much in the dark.
I think we'd rather he be tight lipped about it, as well
No one wants negative comments being leaked to the media by KP, usurping the coach’s authority during games.
#52
we have no basis for knowing how good KP is at evaluating coaches
Firmly in favor of making a coaching change at the end of the season.

Not specifically, no
But we know he does his homework on everything, and has been an extremely good judge of talent in every other way.
He would know what our weaknesses are, what a potential coach’s strengths are, down to the last stat.
#52
Even Hedo, talent wise, wouldn't have been a mistake for us
Hedo has been bad for the Raptors as a quasi-focal point, but as a secondary ballhandler for us he’d prolly work out nice— especially with Oden.
His contract woulda’ been awful though.
#52
Hedo would have been an enormous mistake.

I like the Wingcast but haven’t listened to it in a while.

Ben cracked that our roster at Sloan was larger than our active basketball roster many nights this season.
Apparently, KP is the golden child of Sloan… one of the very few elite GMs who crosses over the lines of former-player/jock and stat-nerd.
by Cablinasian on Mar 15, 2010 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions
It does seem rare
To find a former player who understands and loves stat stuff.
Out of dudes we know who are really into new-wave advanced stats, are there any other former players?

Ainge.
From what Pelton and Ben say, we take analytics into account in pretty much every decision we make. Especially in the draft.

That's a good bet.
I’d be surprised if Monty isn’t a head coach somewhere within the next two years.
I think one thing we could say about Monty though is he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to step out of place,
so it would be difficult to make any kind of judgment about his style given his reluctance to disrupt Nates system. It’s not like Monty was coaching when Nate couldn’t walk, he was just acting as a liaison.
