Did you folks read ULC's post?

In the middle, it just turns into a funny argument where one group says Blake was traded for a big and another group says he was traded just to make room for Bayless.

by tominhawaii on Mar 14, 2010 3:42 AM PST reply actions

The answer is neither.

KP was tired of taking heat for being too cowardly to make an in-season move.

Yeah...but Clips wanted expirings or no deal

and we gave them money as an enticement.

by 92wastheyear on Mar 14, 2010 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

you don’t think the Clips woulda taken Bayless’ three million or Batum or Rudy?

Travis and Steve were traded because they were kinda on the outside looking in with all the roster moves, and they probably would’ve been gone after the season anyway. They did good things in Portland, it was just time to go.

#52

by Cablinasian on Mar 14, 2010 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

the Clippers almost tampered by saying they wanted Camby back, and planned to go after him in the offseason. The deal was made to save cash in a crappy season… but they still woulda taken young talent back. We traded Travis and Steve because they were easy to trade and there wasn’t time in Portland.

The next iPhone version, or at least the software update, will probably not drop before June.

In terms of software applications available for the platform now and in the near future, it’s not contest: The iPhone. The major critique about that is not the phone, but the exclusive contract with AT&T which may or may not end this summer.
In terms of integrating it with your work environment and typing messages on it, a lot of people still prefer Blackberrys though I have no problem with a virtual keyboard. I’m also hearing about people really liking the screen and the navigation application on Google’s Nexus One, which has the most modern version of the Google OS platform (Android) right now. I have yet to try that one.

A modern version. Only they expanded the role of the Mad Hatter a lot because Burton has a man crush on Depp. I liked the artistry a lot, and the music/sound, but I was never that much into the story. Maybe Burton should have used some more real set design like in Beetlejuice, but 3D with green-screens is cheaper so that’s the way the studio probably wanted it.

I think Dante appears to be a better rebounder than Patterson though.

Draft Express describes his rebounding as " bafflingly poor." That paired with Dante’s ability to guard forwards of all shapes and sizes makes me like the inferno a little more for the Blazers. I can’t get the link to work, SBN is acting weird for me today. But if you’re interested in reading the draft express profile just google “Draft Express Patrick Patterson.”

so at 11:40 lastnight I moved the hands to 12:40 and I noticed they looked off, so then I advanced the clock so the hour hand was on the 2 (Inexplicably) and then set the minute hand to the 12, that way when I moved the clock back to the proper time the hands would be the right distance apart, follow? So in that I ended up not rotating the analog clock back the proper amount and only moved it back to the 1:40 position therefore ending up with a clock that was advanced two hours instead of one!!

this is ridiculous

"Last year during our stretch run, Andrew [Bynum] wasn’t there ‘cause of injury, so Pau got a lot more touches," Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. "And this year, we’ve got to kind of split the difference between those two. Now, any of those guys can have a big night. Andrew had one the other night. Lamar [Odom] can have a big night. And Pau can have a big night.

Who should be sacrificing touches?
Gasol: 57% TS, 20 USG
Bynum: 60% TS, 20 USG
Bryant: 54% TS, 32! USG

I’d split the touches between Bryant and Gasol, and give Bynum the lion’s share (not that it’s that simple, I understand). But to write a column like that and just assume that Bryant is their best player and “the man” because he’s a prick who wants to shoot all the time is pretty ridiculous too.

I owe you an explanation as to why I'm a hater

Everyone associated with college hoops (I guess I just mean the media) is so sanctimonious about its “purity” and the “effort,” and doing it for the “name on the front of the shirt.” They also love the idea that the coach is a “maker of men.” But when a systemic problem threatens this purity narrative they’ve built up, the NCAA does absolutely nothing to clean it up.

Examples: paying players to get an unfair competitive advantage (seen at Duke, UMass, USC, Memphis)
Point shaving (seen most recently at Boston College and Northwestern)
Academic fraud (Florida State and Minnesota spring to mind)

CBS is complicit in this, because they don’t want to pressure the NCAA, because it would tarnish the purity of their product to shine a spotlight on it.

I also hate NCAA announcers, because they constantly throw players under the bus while talking about how coaches are doing a great job (the “maker of men” narrative).

The single elimination format is really exciting, but the sanctimony surrounding it bugs me, particularly when media blowhards talk about the college product being better. It’s not. Watch some NBA.

by skywaker9 on Mar 14, 2010 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with this

The first couple rounds are also great just for the sheer amount of basketball, and all the upsets (I’m not that much of a hater, having hoops at 9:30 AM is great).

I will say the impact of the upsets on the tournament is probably a bit overstated. It seems that at the very top end, the best teams have such a talent advantage they can overcome the unpredictability. I would say since Syracuse won in 2003, every NCAA champion has been either the most talented or second most talented team in the country. Kansas was second, and they were only able to beat #1 Memphis because Memphis couldn’t hit a FT to save their lives.

by atomiccafe on Mar 14, 2010 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Seniors matter too

If you look at the last two freshman-led teams to make it to the finals, both lost (Ohio State and Memphis) while all four teams in the final four last year were senior heavy.

explain this

Why are the teams that are 39-55 or so not as good a candidates this year as in years past? Why would 60 get you in this year?

I’m genuinely curious.

by atomiccafe on Mar 14, 2010 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

It has to do with wins over top teams

Wins over the RPI top 100 are in scarce supply among bubble teams.

None of them played top non-conference schedules (which for example saved Zona’s ass last year, their SOS was #1 while Virginia Tech’s this year is #338).

So Minny’s wins over MSU and Purdue help overcome their garbage RPI?

Isn’t RPI a terrible way to rate teams anyway though? If you can be rated 40th in a system while not beating anyone else in the top 100, that seems to say more about the system than about the teams.

by atomiccafe on Mar 14, 2010 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes but is a pretty far rating tool

And it can’t leave a good impression on the committee that you got wacked by 30 in the final.

The formula’s like 25% record, 50% opponent’s records and 25% opponent’s opponents. That seems awful crude. Why should 75% of the value of a game be based on the opponents, and only 25% based on the outcome?

by atomiccafe on Mar 14, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Also crap losses

All of the bubble teams have losses (often home losses) against the bottom of their league).

The pizzeria I wanted to go to is now a Chinese restaurant, and since I really wasn’t in the mood for Chinese food I went to another restaurant that was closed due to change of ownership. Then I went up the street to a similar one that was also closed until April, and then ended up in a pretty uninspiring Greek restaurant that was straight out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I don't think so.

Turner is a rebounding machine. 9.1 boards at 6-7? I’d say he’s more a mixture of Durant/JJohnson/McGrady than Roy. Probably closest to JJ.

T-Mac was on a whole ’nother special level of basketball when he was good.

Just ‘cause Turner is a better rebounder and turns it over doesn’t mean Roy’s a bad comparison, it means he’s not a perfect comparison.

Turner’s shooting less than 35 from college 3, which means he’s no Danny Granger at this point in his career.

as to JJ

Johnson is a legitimate superstar who does a number of things well, but he’s not without his flaws. He has a slow first step, so he doesn’t penetrate (and, consequently, get to the line) as much as some other comparable scorers.

Link

The best part of Turner’s game is in his ability to attack the basket. He can get there in a number of ways, whether it’s beating his man off the dribble, or curling tightly off a screen. This great knack for slashing to the basket has translated to an extraordinary 7.8 free throw attempts per 40 pace adjusted – and there is still room to grow.

Link

So I’d say he’s closer to Roy, in that he can draw fouls and score at the cup.

by atomiccafe on Mar 14, 2010 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Roy's developed a heck of a midrange game though.

And Roy’s ability to score at the cup and draw fouls is based on his deceptive quickness. When people talk about first step quickness, they’re talking about LeBron/Wade type slashing. Roy relies on being able to lull the defender to sleep.

The ability of Turner to curl tightly of a pick is very much in line with what they say about Roy, and I already addressed earlier that i may have erred in saying Turner is nothing like Roy.

I just flew through filling out a bracket on pure gut and name recognition and token upsets.

i’ll revise later….but I have Cornell in the Sweet 16 just for Jakey.

I think I have UK winning in one bracket and KU in another. and my biggest upset was a 13 seed beating Purdue.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

I don't give a flip about march madness

It’s either because I hate America or because I have no dog in the fight and watching random people play basketball isn’t interesting.

From watching Coach K I learn that I don't like watching Coach K's playing style ;)

There are a lot of really boring guys playing either fundamentally sound or fundamentally chaotic basketball for short stretches. But yeah, I enjoy March Madness

I learned the same thing about Coach K's style! lol!

it’s not for everyone.. i just love seeing inspiration when it strikes a team and everything clicks..

spesh ‘cuse o’course but i definitely key in on various coaching matchups throughout the year.. it’s interesting to see how teams to develop in such a short time..

We now have 2 cats that have adopted us. The second one is a gigantic

neutered male, at least 15 or so pounds. Unfortunately, they hate each other and we have to keep them separated. We’ve been trying for about 2 months to socialize them but so far to no avail. Do you have any ideas?

give them time

and interact with both. As they see you interacting with the other, they may warm up. It’s sometimes hard for cats that have no common background to learn to get along, especially if they’ve been abandoned or had to fight to survive on their own. I wouldn’t do anything to force the issue, like keep them in the same locked room.
I’m curious what you named the fatty…. Mintaka?

We call him Moochie and he answers to it. Because he's nuetered

we aren’t sure he doesn’t have another home in the area. We keep meaning to put a collar on him with a note asking if he’s a stray but haven’t gotten around to it yet. We can’t even let them in the same room together so they’re in separate parts of the house. Every couple of days we put them both in cat carriers and they have a face off so they can at least see each other but it hasn’t worked yet after about 2 months.

I am in Portland, DirecTV subscriber. I haven’t had an NBATV game blacked out this year except when it’s the Blazers. Does LPBB black out NBATV?

I’m grousing, but it’s very frustrating as a fan to see the team once every couple weeks or so unless I score tickets. That and Larry Miller’s constant “global brand” talk when he doesn’t even take care of the team’s backyard. Any other business/organization that ticked me off this much would lose my business, so I have been questioning my fandom

Bosh is such a co-star that it hurts my balls!

I watch a lot of Raptors games… even his best games, he isn’t dominating it in that Lebron/Wade/whoever way, the way we’ve seen Roy do, where he’s either scoring or making the play to get the score. He’s a great PF but he’s a star co-star and if he can get with the right REAL star, he’d be suh-weet.

If he goes to a new team and is still the main guy on the team, I don’t know if it’ll be much different than his success in Toronto.

Sure, prolly

But it’d be a mediocre team forever.

They ain’t working for this capspace for a decade just to get Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson. They’d spin it as a success, but they’d never do much in the playoffs even if they make it every year.

If they don’t get a superstar signing, they need draft picks. But, they trade away their picks all the damn time. It’s Lebron/Wade or bust.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 14, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

they could still get amare

i believe earlier in the year he made a comment like he wanted to go to new york a team featuring amare and joe johnson would be solid( not world beater but a top 5 team in the east)

the few, the proud, the blazers

by HD on Mar 14, 2010 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

It should be a decent team, I agree

They’d still need a PG, a playoff worthy SF, if they can keep David Lee than him and Amare is a brutally bad defensive frontline… the Knicks have a lot of holes, even if they get Lebron.

At least if they get Lebron, they’d get other guys wanting to be there. Johnson and Amare doesn’t get anyone’s panties willing to deal with the NYC media as the team struggles to win 48 games.

Because they already have an agreement with LeBron and Bosh to come to NY.

Yeah, but how many titles do you win with that, if we assume that at least 2 out of Wade/LeBron/Bosh stay in the East, plus Howard? 0! And guards over 30 not named Jordan pretty much all decline rather quickly and are not worth max money.

I don’t give a crap about what happens to the Knicks next year and absolutely do not think that they will win a title.

any titles go through Lebron after this year, in my opinion. doesn’t matter where he ends up.

Portland is well positioned as they are. They are all the same players so only if a couple of the big ones team up. and remember, whatever teams they leave get weaker. the more things change the more they stay the same.

Cavs got some good role players though

They don’t get a lot of credit, but Big Z, Mo Williams, Verajao, Delonte… those are some really good role players.

It’s mostly Lebron, but not all Lebron. He needs some good players with him to benefit from his unselfish playmaking.

He’s the most dominant force in the NBA right now, but even he needs a good team.

We “control” how good we can be if we’re healthy and getting everyone used to each other. We gotta hope our bad luck evens out, and we achieve dominance at the right time.

I know it never hurts to plan ahead for a future Finals matchup, but so much will change this offseason, and from then till when we’re counting on being in the Finals, that it’ll be tough to worry too much about what happens.

Aldridge 40
Roy 39
Camby 37
Miller 32
Batum 31
Rudy 21
Howard 19
Bayless 16

So, Hedo prolly played one of his better games for the season

Still wasn’t worth what he paid. He really seems superfluous for them. He isn’t handling the ball much, like he did for Orlando, and he just sorta duplicates what they already had if they’re just using him as a tall shooter.

Bad bad signing for Colangelo… but that’s what he does!

Though the Raptors stunk at the wings last year, and now they have Hedo and Demar there

The guy who really botched it for me was Dumars. That team doesn’t seem to go anywhere, and there is no real plan for the future anymore with the kind of “assets” they have. The team is not particularly young. The team is not particularly prone to winning a title ever. Bad mediocrity.

by Norsktroll on Mar 14, 2010 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Dumars messed up double bad

Unless, once again, I am wrong in believing it was possible for him to let the cap space ride till 2010. SUCH bad, mediocre signings… guys just clearly not part of a title contending team in Gordon and Charlie V. Such weird signings…

The best part is they got nothing anyone really is dying to have on their own team, so not much trade value.

Observations from attending the game tonight

It seemed like everyone that mattered had a great game tonight. I couldn’t believe my eyes when Aldridge had 10/7 with 5 minutes to go in the first quarter. Batum only missed one shot all game, Roy got his quietly, and Andre Miller was incredible. He’s such an amazing improvement over Blake. Even Rudy had a really great stretch in the second quarter. I don’t remember seeing Webster in there. Camby finally got the minutes he deserves, and made the most of them, looking especially good on offense (for once). The hot hand wasn’t taken out at the wrong time, the refs were irrelevant…

Just a great game. Toronto was shooting the lights out, but we stayed ahead through offensive boards and ridiculous three point shooting. I can’t think of a single complaint I had with the game.

Actually, I take that back. You know the dog races they have at half time? Every time, there’s a fat brown dog that screws up the race for the Portland Tailblazers. They need to fire that stupid dog. Also, there were no junior blazer dancers tonight, which was a plus.

and syracuse is like 30% likely to have their starting center.. so if there was ever a 1-16 with potential drama.. it’s this one..

i’m pretty sure it’s not going to happen though..

Turkoglu scored 14 points, but not before he was booed during the player introductions. And he was booed every time he touched the ball. And he was booed when he committed a foul, or checked in and out of the game, and even when he was leaving the floor after the loss.

Aldridge played an inspired 6 minutes of basketball to start the game

racking up 10 and 7, IIRC, but wasn’t really noticeable afterward.

Roy deferred to the rest of the squad because they were hitting everything.

Rudy was playing how we dream he plays every game. Active hands on defense, great shooting and passing on offense and just a general knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Batum continues to show off his improved shooting ability. He needs 30 minutes every game.

The defense was nearly nonexistent for most the game.

Nate used an 8 man rotation which I"d like to see more. Many people are suggesting Dante as the 8th man instead of Howard, but I’m on the fence.

The Raps made a push in the 4th and brought a double digit lead down to 2 before the Blazers put the game away late.

it goes like this

We get the Mavs in the 1st round and we all know the Mavs are a paper tiger. We beat them.

The Suns play the Nuggets in the 2-7 matchup and get hot, running the Nugs off the floor. Then, the Suns go ice cold against us in the 2nd round. BOOM! Conference finals against the Fakers. The Blazers are playing loose and free at this point while LA has struggled to get past a crafty Spurs team and a tough Jazz team. Then LA remembers they can’t handle the Blazers in the Rose Garden. Kobe goes into selfish mode trying to win the game on his own, but Batum does just enough to keep it from happening.

I’m not sure how we win the NBA finals against the Cavs or Magic, but you get the idea.

by Starvin' Marvin on Mar 14, 2010 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't like it very much.

Temple is the #3 defensive team in the country, and they specialize in defending the 3 which happens to be what Cornell relies on. Its a game Cornell can win, but I wouldn’t put their chances at more than 25%.

I don’t like the Wisconsin matchup either. Wisconsin is a top 10 team per KenPom, and always defends like crazy.

Plain and simple, Cornell is highly overrated right now— not by the committee (Cornell should have been an 11 IMO) but by the media. Cornell could go to the sweet 16, but I don’t recommend picking it unless your pool gives upset bonus points.

I am very glad Cornell didn’t draw Michigan St, Maryland or Wisconsin (in the 1st round), and Butler would have been bad also, but Vandy, Purdue w/o Hummer, T A&M, Pitt, Xavier, Tennessee and Marquette would all have been better draws IMO.

They're working on it, starting on the East Coast

It’s really a sign that they’re behind the times, considering it’s being offered on airplanes at this point.

Interesting,I am flying out of LA on the 15th

I have no idea what to expect or if it would be worth taking a laptop with me.I have a pc to use in the Islands so thats not a big deal,is it going to be like buying a sandwhich from the dubious deli of is it free and easy in the plane and the airport?

by southern oregon on Mar 15, 2010 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I haven't had a chance to try it out.

My understanding is that it’s pretty decent, and is similar to getting online at a hotel. I presume you put in your credit card when you connect to their wireless, but I’m not sure. It will be overpriced though, I presume $10-15 for the (6 hour?) flight. But costs varies from airline to airline, so it’s worth a check.

You should check with your airline. Some airlines have it, some don’t, and some only have it for a small number of flights.

so I may or may not be traveling to Jacksonville for the tourney

any advice on (relatively) cheap last minute flights?

Even JetBlue is expensive for flights this week

I’m guessing because all the tourney flights have already been booked. No idea if there are cheap flights left.

by Timmay! on Mar 15, 2010 1:09 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, my buddy and I find out tomorrow if we got tickets through the Cornell lottery

We are already having some buyers remorse due to the cost of all these flights. We are half hoping (ok, a little more than half)we don’t get tickets.

Perhaps look for a city a little distance away and rent a car to drive the rest of the way?

That could open up airports from Orlando to, if you can handle the drive, Miami.

good suggestion. we'll look into that.

SFO to FLL looked promising at a quick glance.

At least, compared to some of the other pricing. I didn’t check ATL or anything.

by Timmay! on Mar 15, 2010 1:22 AM PDT up reply actions

SF is for whatever reason the most expensive place on the west coast to fly out of

I have people there and it would be nice but the tix are almost $200 more than La or PDX

by southern oregon on Mar 15, 2010 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions

It is the air traffic

and the fog makes it much worse.

SFO is a hassle for Air traffic control and pilots.

Hubby needs to go to Florida for a family situation but the tickets

are so expensive right now that he has to wait for a couple of weeks until they’re reasonable again. By the end of March they’ll be 2/3 cheaper than they are now. Crazy

I hear all the major cities are having severe problems with sewage disposal.

Something to do with new lifestyles and eating habits causing all the pipes to get clogged.
As a result there’s been on outbreak of naked mole rats the size of humans running thru the pipes.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Reggie Miller vs the Knicks in the 1995 playoffs. it was called winning time. I think where he hit multiple game winners/daggers or something. i have it on dvr and will watch tonight, but i was wondering if anyone saw it and what they thought.

The one about Len Bias was really good, but I’ve also only caught maybe 5 of the 30 so far. Amazon stats selling the DVDs next week or so.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
