Saturday Junk Drawer - Eternal Roster Edition

Let's play a silly game.

You've been granted the ability to pick your NBA roster from anyone in the world, salaries being irrelevant.

HOWEVER, you can only pick 5 starters and 1 sub.  AND, this is the only roster you will have for the next ten years.  If someone gets injured, you have to play all 5 guys for 48 minutes.  Which roster would you pick?

Off the top of my head, I'm going with

Evans

Lebron

Durant

D. Howard

Rondo

Sub: Batum

I was trying to think of who would most likely be a walking corpse in 10 years.

I wouldn’t put my money on Roy being much good in 10 years. Paul either.

I don’t see that with almost any of the rest on this list

i think the backcourt is the most solid part of that lineup..

evans and rondo would be fierce side-by-side.. and durant can definitely stretch the defense their..

I think I’d switch this up a bit..

Evans, Rondo, Melo, Lebron, Howard. Durant

Injuries count, eh? So does chemistry.

I think you do have to take Lyndon B. Johnson, er, LBJ first and foremost. Guy’s too good not to.

Center is probably the next position to fill. So who’s good and not injury prone? And young enough to compete the next ten years? I think Howard is probably the right choice. But I’m more tempted to go with Al Horford or Brook Lopez. Because I’m not sure Howard buys in. I’m going with Lopez, because I’m sure at this point he’d sacrifice to be on a winning team.

You need a good young PG who can defend and hit the open three. Since Lyndon B… LBJ is essentially a point forward, ball distribution is not necessarily necessary (that statement was redundantly redundant). Ah, who cares, I’ll take Stephen Curry, even if he doesn’t fit everything.

You need a PF who can fill in at center in case of injury, can rebound, but can also hit an outside shot. The best player that I can think of who is still young enough is Chris Bosh, though the personality of no longer being the number one guy may not sit well, and with only six players, chemistry matters. Aldridge is Bosh-lite, but I want a better rebounder, no offense LA. Hey, I didn’t take Horford above. He’ll work.

That leaves the SG. Wade would be great, but is often injured. Same with Roy. We need a young slasher, who can hit an outside shot if he needs to. Mayo has an attitude, but I think the President can keep him in line.

Last, we need a player comfotable coming off of the bench who can fill a need for us in case of injury. We have two player who could play center. We have two players who could play PG. We only have one true wing, and he’s on the bigger side. So a legitimate 3 would be terrific. Unfortunately, all the good wings think that they should start. So we’ll just have to take Jared Dudley. He’d fit in well in that group.

To recap:

PG: Stephen Curry
SG: O.J. Mayo
SF: Lyndon… LBJ
PF: Al Horford
C: Brook Lopez
Sub: Jared Dudley

Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.

interesting thoughts..

i’ve been trying to think about whether I consider Lopez a legit enough center to be filling that role for ten years.. also.. trying to think about who would last.. except that I think Nic would be perfect on this team as the backup.. adds some defense..

also oj for durant is tough.. i think durant has a great lack of ego for a team like this..

I really dislike Lopez’s rebounding. He’s LMA-esque. Bigs when, and Howard and Oden are the two most talented centers in the league.

I do not understand what the “injury-prone” thing is, and why the media tries to push it. Just like in the “hot hand” debate, there are injury prone players… but there are a lot fewer than we say there are. A lot of people just have bad luck.

i don’t want to say or to acknowledge that he is injury-prone either.. but he’s shown himself to be incredibly unlucky and to have more-than-his-fair-share of “normal big man injuries”…

all he needs is to be around for enough of the time and he will be a beast.. but in the hypercrazy madeup reality of here are your 6guys make it work.. i can’t see trusting someone whose combined games in the three years since he was drafted will have played in one full regular seasons worth of games plus his six playoff games..

I don't know why the genius of David Lynch is so elusive.

You didn’t say they had to be current players, did you? The word “eternal” is suggestive of other possibilities. Here’s a list of players, ranging from very good to great, who have had remarkably long, productive, and injury-free NBA careers. Over a 10-year period, these guys would win a lot of games and would be quite unlikely to forfeit any due to having fewer than 5 players to suit up.

I’ve been kinda down about Roy and Aldridge recently, so I went back and watched some of the playoff series from last year. Guys, they were killing it on defense. There was no “conserving energy.”

I guess that makes me a little more optimistic. The problem is that I also saw our offense swallowed alive.

We faced basically a more experienced version of us last year in the playoffs

Finley doesn’t make that shot, we play New Orleans and I doubt we have too much trouble.

I would rather be exposed in last year’s playoffs than coast to an easy second round series and learn nothing. We saw that our offense was eaten up by an aggressive defense.

For those who haven't seen it yet...
“I looked at him for a second and said, ‘Do you want me to be 100 percent real with you?’” Webster recalled.

Roy nodded.

Normally a friend who supports Roy to a fault, Webster leveled with him: He wasn’t setting screens to get open. He was being too passive. And he appeared to have become robotic.

I think I took this new article a bit less seriously than you guys. You guys took it as a “look how great the Blazers are again!” article, but I was only focused on the fact that there are still people on the team who are willing to call Brandon out when necessary. I mean, he’s stunk against both good and bad teams, so this is a good start.

This article didn’t come across as badly as the previous one for me.

Who else is most similar to LeBron in size, bulk/strength, skills? It’s a bit funny that both of those were in one draft.

LeBron with about 9/10th of the athleticism and about 7/10th of the passing/courtvision while being a slightly better scorer.

I made one up.

2 1/2 tsp’s of yeast
1/2 cup of milk
1 cup of water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp honey
1/2 cup flour to start and then after the yeast grow a little I put in about 2 1/2 more cups and then let it rise in a bowl with some clarified butter, then I split it into 8 parts and roll it out really thin about 1/8th of an inch and fry it on a dry griddle.

It’s very similar to na’an bread, but if you bake it on a pizza stone at 550 you can get it to form a pocket and make pita bread with it.

The cars are much more angular this year and already look way lighter. It’s going to be interesting to see how much this slows the cars down, I have a feeling a lot of drivers are going to run out of gas in the first few weeks.

I hate the rookie love

Has a 55th pick or higher in the draft ever amounted to anything?

by tominhawaii on Mar 14, 2010 4:00 AM PST up reply actions

I got no idea

I assume that yeah, someone has.

It ain’t likely though. Patty Mills is more famous than most guys taken 55th I imagine, what with being an Aussie and being in the Olympics and whatnots. There’s more reasons for people to like him for the exotique reasons.

He might become good enough to be a backup— I really don’t know. But anyone who complains BayBay ain’t a PG and then wants to see Patty play, doesn’t know how Patty has played. He’s a scoring guard who is short, not a “pure PG”. He’s a smaller, less good version of Bayless, judging from his college career.

If he learned to shoot real good, he could combine that with his quickness to be a tough cover.

He will be overpaid. NY will probably offer him a max after striking out, which is way too much for a tier 2 29 year old SG. If ATL doesn’t match, he’ll follow the money (he did it once already, right?)

by bow4meow on Mar 13, 2010 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

max K though

I think they can start him at 14-16 mil and go up from there. So if it’s a five year contract, you’re talking 20 mil/yr to a 33 year old JJ.

Even a 28 yr old JJ’s not worth that. Although there’s kind of the question of what the ATL can do otherwise. Horford and Smith are studly, but Crawford’s just a scorer, and then you have like Bibby and Marvin Williams? So maybe you just have to pay what it takes to keep him and do your best over the next 3 years.

by atomiccafe on Mar 13, 2010 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

I see him staying

Bibby and Crawford are guys I can see leaving town… Atlanta has a window for sure, but how far through it you can see is a little harder to tell

by DrivetheLane on Mar 13, 2010 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

Nice!

I don’t have a milestone for 3’s for one game… just career milestones for 3’s, such as make 100 for a season, 500 for a career, etc.

Is that your SG or SF character?

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

yeah....SG

i still haven’t raise the athletic stuff much though. just cause they’re just too expensive. it’s crazy. those stats must be cheaper for a PG or something. or maybe it’s cause i’m 6’6" or something.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

by DrivetheLane on Mar 13, 2010 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

No, they are real expensive for me as well

I just always used my points for it.

Think of it this way— usually you can do good enough to raise it a point. Each time ya raise it, you’ll do better in the next game, getting you more skill points and able to get more stats, which equals more skill points. Then you can spend more on athleticism, and so on.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

It's an investment, DTL!

You could have ’em all the way up, and start OWNING people, or scatter the points around on every other stat— which will be easier to do once your athleticism stuff is maxed.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

And as a guard, speed is so awesome

The ability my guy has to just drive past people for a layup means I get a lot of easy points.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, especially speed

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

yeah…my speed is at 70 and the next one is 1370 points. my quickness is at 70 and the next one is 711 points. i just need to start going point by point i guess.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

by DrivetheLane on Mar 13, 2010 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

Yes you do

Both of mine are at about 95 now, and by the end of my second year I want them to be at 99.

Combine that with some sweet dribble moves and suddenly I’m one of the best PGs in the league.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

it would take a long time to get to 99 for me. i still want to get my 3’s up to where i can make them consistently. i want to get to about 85. that’ll help me get some milestones too.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious [stuff].

by DrivetheLane on Mar 13, 2010 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

3s will come

The easiest way to get lots of points early in your career is good shot selection, the easiest way to do that is layups.

And 85 in the 3 point category is not consistent, its pretty good but that’s what I have right now.

Like a real player you have to find your sweet spot for your jumper. My guy likes the baseline J and the corner 3.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

yeah….i’m a 90 on layups, and 80 on shoot close and an 85 on shoot in traffic. but i still miss quite a bit which is annoying. i’m also a 92 on midrange jumpers so usually i’ll just face up on the block and make a 12 footer.

by DrivetheLane on Mar 13, 2010 10:57 PM PST up reply actions

Also offensive clutch

My guy has hit about ten buzzer beater game winners this year. I’m like Roy, I don’t miss in the last two minutes.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

That sounds awesome.

My offensive and defensive clutch aren’t high… we usually blow the other team out and I don’t get close games.

But in the playoffs, 2nd round, against the Wizards, Arenas was KILLING me. he scored 63 points on me. But, I scored 57 on him, and he missed 5 straight during the last 2 minutes of the game, and I kept scoring or getting the assist. It was fun… I was losing the points duel, but won the game.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

Point by point, yup

It takes a bit, but you can get ’em maxed out in no time with 5 minute quarters.

I remember I got my quickness up first, because it was cheaper. And it helped. But speed is expensive for a reason… it’s powerful.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, it could take a bit

And I didn’t always use my points on athleticism… I’d use it on layups and stuff too. Never shooting, though.

But when I’d get a big bonus from a milestone, it ALWAYS got spent on athleticism. Because the whole game gets way easier after that.

Even getting it to 80… you just move better, can get in passing lanes better, blow past any defender, etc.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 13, 2010 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

Houston is great for a PG

Besides the fact that our GM is a genius (we ended up with the #1 and #10 draft picks after winning the title due to dumping Battier and Brooks), Yao is an easy guy to dump to for assists, as is Scola.

by skywaker9 on Mar 13, 2010 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

And that helps your stamina last longer!

Speed is wonderful DTL!

I got maxed out on athleticism stats (vertical, stamina, quickness, speed) during my rookie season. Aside from layups and shooting in traffic, I didn’t work on any offensive stat (though if I spent money on, say, quickness, and had 200 points left or something, I used it on my defensive awareness and offensive awareness). Oh, and steals is 99 too.

Basically, my game consisted of driving the ball and dishing or scoring. And on defense, I went for steals. So, I only worked on what would help that type of game.

Plus, after winning all my end-of-season awards, I had a crazy amount of skillpoints to sort through… the 2500 I get from each game, MVP, DPOY, 1st team, ROY, rookie team, and whatever end of season thing there was. I used that to get rebounding high, and finally work on shooting.

It is a very Rajon Rondo style of play!

That’s true, I’ve thought that myself.

Except I score a lot more than he does, but otherwise, yeah… Morty Rondo.

MY ETERNAL ADVICE— get every stat you can. Go for every rebound, go for steals, dunk the ball, only shoot “good shots” (where it tells you, you shot a good shot), and accumulate stats as best you can. Positive stats equals skill points.

In the navy

I got sick of working 8-10 hour days with no breaks and all the smokers would take 10-20 minute breaks every couple of hours. At first I would just go up and hold an unlit cigarette in my mouth and then I started smoking cloves. Tobacco smokers would ask me to move away from them because of the smell.

by Mortimer on Mar 14, 2010 12:04 AM PST up reply actions

HoopData composed a new passing metric called “assist rate.” It appears to be gobs of all-around goodness, but I haven’t fully researched it.

Suffice to say, Jerryd is actually in pretty good stead, and his assists go mainly to three pointers. The implication there is that threes are worth more, and it takes a lot more passes to get assists, because they’re made less often.

#52

by Cablinasian on Mar 14, 2010 12:06 AM PST up reply actions

My peepers say

He doesn’t get a lot of assists that leads to, say, a dunk or an easy layup (the super assist, I guess), but he’s been quite good at penetrating and finding the open shooter.

#52

by Mortimer on Mar 14, 2010 12:09 AM PST up reply actions

I think assists are kinda self-adjusting in a way. If you get people shots at the rim, then you have a high rate of assists per pass. If you are getting people less valuable shots from three, it takes more shots to get makes, and thus results in fewer assists.

10-4 wouldn’t be impossible at all. Depends on how the team is coming together.

I LOVE the high-post offense we ran last night. It means the team HAS to move… if you look at Brandon’s touches, over half of them came out of the high-post set (well, not a set. Mostly just Camby grabbing the ball and waiting for people to move), where Brandon got the ball in the mid-post.

That helps him sooo much.

1995 is a real tough one, he's always forgotten. Here's a wiki excerpt:
His career highlights include leading the NBA in field goal percentage (57.6) in 1992-93 with the Suns, who reached the NBA finals that year. He also lead the Lakers in scoring in 1994-95 with a 21.7 average and made the All-Star team, and in 1995-96 again led the Lakers with a 21.2 average, notching the Lakers’ first 50-point game in over 20 years.

The East being decent sure lasted a long time

1 season in a row is their streak for being a decent conference.

They are tough on the top.

But they fizzle out pretty quickly.

At least some of the bottom of the playoff teams will be playing near.500 ball this time.

Unfortunately, yes

I already told myself I just won’t get much sleep. That way I don’t TRY to sleep, and not succeed, which is all that would happen.

When I know I gotta get up early, all I do is not sleep and look the clock and calculate “ok, if I went to sleep RIGHT THIS SECOND, I can still get 4 good hours of sleep”.

This is why Roy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Miller
“The way I took it was, ‘You need to wake up,’” Roy said. “It was almost as if I was starting to make it like a job. I needed to go out there and have fun and hoop. I think that’s the biggest thing you lose when you come back from injury — everything is nip and tuck, and you are just trying to find a rhythm. Well, he got me out of that.”

link

They are freaking millionaires paid millions of dollars to play a game that many people pay to play. Miller needs to pull his head out of his butt and learn to lighten up and have fun. Basketball, it’s just a game.

Maybe if he sees more success in the post season than he has up to this point in his career it will rekindle something for him. Maybe.

I am perpendicularly pissed off right now!!!!!!

Dre just needs to get hurt

So he can feel the emptiness inside of him as he watches everyone else have fun while he’s feeling ouchie, and then he’ll have that love again.

I think he can have a veteran aloofness to him, but I don’t see him as not enjoying himself out there… I think he takes joy in posting up smaller dudes, getting rebounds, doing his job. He doesn’t fire anyone else up or whatever, but I think he likes what he does.
