Blazers Regular Season MVP - (Poll)
Yes, there still are 15 games left - but i think most of us have come to some sort of decision as to which Blazer we think has risen to the challenge to keep the ship afloat. Which one of these players do you feel has stepped up the most to help salvage this stranger than fiction Trail Blazer regular season? Please feel free to campaign for your nominee as if he were running for president.

Dre as well...
he’s really stepped up and taken a bulk of the scoring off Brandon’s shoulders and supplied that grittiness we often lacked. and fifty-some points in a game, hot damn!

I went with Dre
Cause he kept us in the playoff hunt when we coulda fallen out of it…

Definitely Andre Miller.
Followed closely by Juwan Howard.
Roy has been great, but honestly I set him aside when voting because obviously, we wouldn’t have an interesting poll if everyone just voted him.
So, season MVP besides Roy would definitely go to Andre Miller. Without him, we don’t have the record we have today, etc. etc. He’s really carried this team on his back and deserves way more respect than the nitpicking and complaining some people have been giving him.
Roy is MVP no doubt
I don’t understand how Juwan can be considred! He has filled in with more than we could ask, but is he MORE valuable than Brandon Roy? Brandon ROY??

Andre. This should be a fairly one sided poll.

I got pissed in the China thread and it’s been an issue with me since folks pretend to be me in chats on Blazers.com and Facebook. I know a draw a lot of heat my way, and I don’t mind that. I just don’t like folks pretending to be me, so it would be hypocritical of me to pretend to be someone else.

Votes from China? That has a familiar ring to it...seem to remember another voting situation
where votes from China were very influential….now what was it..ah it’s on the tip of my..nah I can’t seem to recall.
How am I to be the first to vote for Juwan?
Could ANY of us have predicted the value he has provided this year? I really believe without Juwan, we slip from fringe playoff contender to lottery team. He has kept us cohesive even on the nights that his stat line isn’t MVP worthy. And he is old enough to be my dad. Well, he is at least old enough to be uncle.

He and Andre both.
I went with Andre in the end because he’s really done the most for us, but Juwan has definitely been unpredictably incredible.
I am right there with you.
I get chills thinking about how this season would have played out without Juwan. Although he is only my senior by a couple of years.
by BlazerFanFromDenver on Mar 12, 2010 4:27 PM PST up reply actions
2nd that. Would have been Roy if he had played with the same intensity that he did leading up to the
all star game and recently. Very very talented. But not day in and day out like he was last year once he got warmed up.
I have been in the Rose Garden
Chanting MVP every time I see Juwan. He has been the anchor of this team. Sure his numbers are not mind boggling, but his presence and his professionalism win it for me this year.
I have no idea what the Blazers would have done with out him.

The results of this pole
reflect the problems with anonymous poles like this one.
How can anybody seriously say that Brandon, warts and all, is not our most valuable player (this is very close to asking who currently has the most trade value). On the other end of the spectrum, how can anybody say that Juwan is our most valuable player (trade value?).
When making the decision to vote on a particular pole, if we don’t take the pole seriously, we are all losing out on interesting information and we are possibly fooling ourselves. I am fairly sure that a lot of us could benefit from knowing what people really think.

I think your mistake is confusing MVP with trade value.
They are not synonymous.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
No, I am just saying that using other measures is one way to bring sanity to our polling behavior.
You could use season long +/- or any number of other measures, and Juwan should never realistically be considered to be our MVP. It is just ridiculous.
A more reasonable argument could be made that he is our worst player—although I would not go that far myself. He does bring some intangibles to the table, but there is definitely a finite value for, “intangibles.” MVP is very close to best player end of the spectrum. Relating MVP to trade value is making use of many of the most essential characteristics of an MVP, even if, in a limited sense, there is that, “extra something,” that we like to factor in.
My main point though is about how we respond to the polls presented to us here. Are we getting the maximum benefit from them? Or are we playing around and fooling ourselves.
21 + 52=
of course we're playing around!
A more serious polling would have accounted for the diener deviation, as well as the outlaw variance. Not to mention, there can be no quantitative analysis without the Freeland model, which is the alternative to the null hypothesis.

of course we’re playing around!
This is the kind of poll behavior that is going to cause the powers that be (i.e. the FCC) to do away with Internet polling all together, because faulty accounting systems cause the degeneration of brain cells and premature senility. And don’t say I did not warn you!
PS: The first sign of senility is when you think Juwan Howard is our MVP.

Polls can have a variety of affects
Most people really don’t want to talk about what has happened to them….
1) After voting frivolously, people tend to become drug users.
2) After voting for obviously incorrect choices, people tend to become habitual liars.
3) After believing the results of a “bad” poll, people have a tendency to exhibit a loss of mental function.
As far as what you mentioned, I am not sure about that because of the drug use, lies, and loss of mental function. People need to take polls seriously or face the consequences—some of which may be yet unknown.

I think the poll shouldn't include Roy.
It’s pretty much indisputable that this team is nowhere near as good as it is now without Roy. It’d be more interesting if the poll was about the MVP that’s not Roy.
Roy is the obvious answer
a better poll would have have been who is the MVPNNR. Most people are probably just assuming this even though he is in there. I voted for Dre.
RUDY > MJ
Thank you KP
The pole asks who you think 'stepped up' the most to keep us afloat this season
Brandon Roy never stepped down, he’s always been the man on this team, that should be a given. I voted for Juwan, because I think he wen’t far above and beyond what anyone expected him to contribute this season. Miller has definately picked it up in the last couple months, but throughout the season I think Juwan is the guy who has consistently given us whatever we needed to win any given game.
It's Brandon Roy's world and we're only renting space We don’t like him—we’re only on his side so he doesn’t dunk on us in front of our co-workers, wives, girlfriends, mistresses and children.

Roy has not stepped up?
He had over 40 last night on a leg that is obviously not well. He has not stepped up even though he has been playing for some time now in so much pain that it could have caused him to shut it down for the season?
And here is what the poll actually asks, word for word:
My Blazer Regular Season MVP Is?
No matter how you slice it, the early poll results should not be taken seriously because it is fairly obvious that the poll itself was either confusing or not taken seriously. And as for myself, I do not believe that anyone here REALLY thinks that Juwan is our MVP. If Nate or KP really thought that, I would say there should be some serious concern about the Blazers winning many playoff games in the near future, let alone any talk of winning a title.
21 + 52=
BRoy, we wouldn't be in the playoff race without him.
Now other guys have done a tremendous job stepping up with all the injuries, but I don’t think they would be leading us into the playoffs had BRoy been out longer/all season. And that’s why he’s MVP, cuz he carries us the way no other teammate can.

It's too soon for this.
Because of Roy’s injury, he needs to make up for the lost games. Otherwise it’s almost automatic. Early in the season, however, it might have been Przybilla.
OT-by the way, how many have been checking the LA Clipper boxscores? Blake has been starting lately, and played 36 min last game I recall. He hasnt shot much, but gets 5-6 assists and just does not, will not turn the ball (in great contrast to Baron Davis). He was 4-5 from 3pt land one game.
Outlaw, meanwhile, has been a 3pt specialist, seemingly, and mostly played on 15 min/gm. Hes only scored 10 pts once that I know. Very, very few rebs or any other stat. He has gone 1-8, 3-8 one game he started and played 32 min.
ignacio
OT cont'd -- Outlaw had breakout game vs Charlotte
38min, 6-10, 4-8 from 3pt = 16
Of course LAC still lost, but that’s by far the most minutes all season. I wonder if he ever fired up 8 3pters the entire time he was a Blazer…? Doubt it.

My vote is totally basketball based and i voted Dre because of Roys mid lane yell.

Obviously, Brandon is our best player and we'd be no where near as good
If he hadn’t carried us for those months when he was playing like 41-42 mpg and scoring 22+ in like 15+ straight games. But Dre to me sans Brandon is the obvious answer, he’s been there for us every game and is being pretty productive at that.

Jawon!!!
This is not to take away from Broy!! What he has done is what all us have expected of him. But one thing is for sure, without The Old Man we would be looking side by side with the Clippers at the lottery. He both with his play on the court and most importanly in the locker room has been the glue that has turned a lost season into one of the most improbable Play-off runs in NBA history. Even if we go out in the first round(which I give us a 70/30 chance)

Brandon Roy -- No question. Here's why . . .
Remember earlier in the season? When we had injuries up the Yin Yang to every player except Brandon Roy we were still in the hunt for leading the division.
Then we got everyone back but Roy got hurt. Suddenly we began to freefall. We didn’t right this ship until Brandon Roy came back.
End of story. Brandon Roy is easily the most valuable player on this team. Without him we’d never be in the playoffs this season. No question.
by Anim8rguy on Mar 13, 2010 1:30 AM PST reply actions 1 recs
Are you sure about that?
Could be right but it seems to me our winning percentage was decent when Roy was out hurt.
Anyone know?
Don't feel like looking it up, but
I think we were 1 game below .500 while he was out — as opposed to 8 games over when he was in.
Anyone want to back me up! :)
OK, Key Stat
Portlandwent 4-8 while Roy sat out with an injured right hamstring.
Multiply that over the coars of a season and we’re looking at a record of about 20 wins for the year.
Who’s the team MVP?
Brandon.
Wrong calculation! 45-23 or so..And that is only including games where Nic started. If all games played were
included, the Blazers have been 22-9 since Batum has been playing. So that would mean the Blazers would be what…about 48-20 or so….
You can’t really just extrapolate wins and losses based on one player. It takes a team. Brandon is obviously the leader.
In this case I think the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
B-Roy
The fact that Juwan is higher than Aldridge is rediculous. Now without Juwan our season is very likely a fringe playoff team, if that, but without LaMarcus.. were a lower level conference team (provided Joel/Greg are both out)

I can't believe that you all voted for Roy!
The guy has had a very disappointing season. He shows zero desire to defend and again has had to miss games. He came back too soon and probably cost us some wins. I know for a fact that if he had the desire to defend then we could have at least 5-8 more wins. Our MVP has to play on BOTH ends and not just on the offensive end. My MVP is Miller, he works hard every night on offense and defense. His shot doesn’t fall as often as Roy’s but he makes up for it in his hustle and toughness. Plus he got 52 man!
P.S- I would never give the MVP to player that doesn’t want to defend. If there was an award for best offensive player then Roy is the guy. MVP isn’t!
Why? He HAS had a disappointing season...
and while “zero” desire to defend may be a little harsh, you certainly can say he hasn’t put forth the defensive effort I expect in the team leader, at least not if we’re going to win it all..
Roy is a great clutch shooter, and an excellent under control penetrator to the hoop. This year, I haven’t seen much else to praise… Last year, we say many more steals on D, he would lock up a guy for stretches, and he wasn’t leading the league in FBP’s…
So if your expectations for Roy were for slightly better than last year, I think disappointed is an appropriate description of his season to date…
Its hard to play defense with the entire 2009-2010 Trailblazers roster on your back...

Roy did seem to defend better last night. I am usually paying so much attention to Batum's defense
that I miss what Roy is doing. But at times I do see him doing not much on defense. Last night he was better.
What I’d really like to know is this: does defending hard affect the players’ offense significantly? I mean does it tire the player out to the point that their shot is affected?
Just curious.
No its not sarcasm! MVPs are leaders on both sides of the ball. Roy is hardly
qualified to lead tthe team defensively. MVPs are usually in the top 3 defenders on their teams, if not the best. For the Blazers we have guys like Oden, Camby, Pryzbilla, Batum, Webster and Aldridges that are ahead of Roy when it comes to defending. We all complain about our team’s perimeter defense but we only criticise the PGs. How about being fair and criticise the SGs as well. We will only become a legit top 5 team if we either get a top defensive PG to take the pressure off of Roy or Roy becomes one of the best defenders in the league. Since I don’t think that it will ever happen means that we have to find another perimeter defender to help Batum.
Roy is MVP
Aldridge and Miller have been carrying the bulk of the load but without Roy this team is a .500 team or below. I would narrowly put Aldridge ahead of Miller for the number 2 spot simply because Aldridge has been more consistent all season. Miller has had some stretches where I wasn’t sure he was going to work out with this team but everybody made adjustments (Miller, Nate, Roy, KP) and Miller is proving to be a valuable contributor to this team.
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
I think a lot of people interperate MVP as 'Best Player'.
Best player on this team is undoubtedly BRoy. To me, that is a no contest. But MVP’s (be it a single game, a week, a month, or even an injury riddled season) aren’t always your best player.
In Portland’s case, their best player has had a slow start, unfortunate absences due to injury, and inconsistencies on both sides of the ball. To me that is what makes this poll relevant.
I understand timing is everything with polls like this – the last two games Brandon has been an absolute world-beater. Many of us will (and have) say ’It’s Broy!!! who else could it be!?!". And i understand that. But if you go back and look at the entire season, I think arguments can (and have) be made for others on the roster as well.
Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
I'm pretty sure Brandon bing the best player on the team only adds to his MVP worthiness
Do you really think Andre would go off for 52 if Dallas hadn’t been planing on stopping Roy? Every team we go up against has to focus on Roy first, which allows other players to have some pretty good games. LA would be next. For that reason alone Roy is the MVP, he gets respect from every other team in the league, nobody else on our roster has that effect.

Yes. Roy didn’t play in that game. Do you really think that Andre would go off for 52 if Roy had been in game?
lol, I know Roy didn't play
thats not the point. Every team has to prepare for Roy first when they face us. If Dallas was working on a strategy how they were going to stop Andre, theres no way he’s scores 52. Roy and LA are the only players opposing teams have to try and stop. They’re the most valuable, whether they playing in a certain game or not.

I look at it as how will the team do with that player gone.
Aldridge and Miller kept tings close while Roy was out but if Aldridge went down for 15 and Roy was healthy, Roy probably keeps the team winning more than they lose. Same with Miller when Blake was here. Miller has become more valuable since they traded Blake but i still think Roy gives you a better chance to win with other guys out.

When he’s out of the game the team just doesn’t play the same way at all. I’d also vote for Roy, but I figured most everyone would and that’s the obvious vote anyway. This poll should be who’s the best supporting player behind Roy this season?
