I guess what I am putting out is how can we the junk people make this work better?I am not going to move to the the city so I can get high speed fiber optic service and it sucks when it I would like to junk it up but I am de facto banned because I am a low tech hillbilly on dial up? I have learned a lot from from the the folks here so my question is how can we make it better? If Dave or Ben have a phone # for some one at SBN I wish they would give them a tweet. Other than that all I have to say is I really enjoyed the game but Sac is a better team and I am already stressing out

It works just fine
the site scales to fit your screen. It gets rid of a lot of stuff on the sidebars too.
So, I stayed away from the gameday threads because of the GS problem
but I’d really like to thank Nate for making an adjustment in the 4th quarter. He brought Roy back from his rest way sooner than normal and went to the zone. I just wish he’d make those adjustments more readily. We should have thrown out more zone earlier in the game too.
Holding GS to 9 points in the 4th quarter was quite impressive. I guess they had to cool off sometime!

How can they not figure out a way to get past a team as bad as GS? How has the coaching staff not seen a way to consistently exploit their obvious deficiencies?

I think it was clever to hold the zone until there was 6 minutes left. Nellie didn’t have time to get his ducks in order and his offense collapsed.

I think throwing out a zone for a few plays to break GS’s rhythm would have gone a long way to stemming the tide before the game nearly got out of hand.

I disagree. Holding it off until they were in serious foul trouble left them without any answer and the game broke open. Showing zone earlier would have them prepared for it with adjustments.

They were in foul trouble the whole game
and by waiting til the end you’re taking a huge gamble that 1) it’ll work and 2) you’ll have enough time to get back into it if it does work
The game was a heartbeat away from turning into a GS rout. Saving the zone doesn’t help squat if that happens. I think it was foolish to wait so long to make an adjustment as the game could easily have been un-winnable by that point.

I think that was a match up decision. Probably had to do with the D league jobber and Juwan’s length, but that’s just a guess. Maybe Dante stepped on Nate’s shiny shoes right before tip off.

this was a horrible matchup for Juwan and a perfect matchup for Dante
Horrible coaching by Nate and a horrible defensive effort bailed out by some timely 3s by Rudy, a great offensive game from Roy and terrible 4th quarter offense from GSW.

I think the trick would have been
showing zone unpredictably until the 4th. You can’t prepare for it if it blindsides you. GS thrives on rhythm and breaking that rhythm should be the first goal when playing against them.

i remember the last time i was really afraid….it was bungee jumping. most specifically the second jump where you go backwards.
the only other times i’m afraid is when i’m like 3/4 asleep and feel like there is someone in my room but i can’t wake up all the way.

I think courage probably doesn’t exist without fear, otherwise it wouldn’t be courage.
I used the phrase "have no fear" above, but I think purpose and resolve make fear minimal – hence "no fear." And I’m not using "no fear" in the dirt biking riding sense, although it could apply.

Nah...it just didn't end up being too relevant
You short term memory did what it was supposed to. The only reason I remembered it was because i knew Tom would bring it up (rightly so based on his proclivities). It is similar to another deal that happened in the Sac game ( I believe) . Rudy who had a pretty blah game …..was running off picks and he had his defender so discombobulated that the guy ran into one of his own players …it was really funny…but because Roy had the ball and was focused on the play he was he trying to make (a pull up jumper I think), the Rudy thing ended up having little impact on the game…so no one probably remembers it but me

That 4th was vintage Warriors
I had a good time with Great Oden’s Raven at this sports bar in Long Beach, but I have a harder time focusing on the details of a game in that setting. It was fun though.
When it looked like we were gonna lose AGAIN in Oakland, I kept telling him how Warriors games go… they always die in the 4th. Nelly starts having the flop sweat and throwing his hands in the air and looking like all in the world is lost, his guys start playing dumb, and the other team wins. They usually undo all the streaky shooting they had done before.
It was so Warriors!

maybe in this case,
but Roy looks different down in the post lately. I think he’s getting stronger. One of the benefits of a young team maturing, not only do they get experience, but they get stronger.

Roy received his own verbal assist from teammate Martell Webster, who told the star that he needed to recapture the flair that has left his game recently, particularly in the Blazers last two games against Denver and Sacramento.
Roy did that and more.
Playing with a combination of grit, anger and swagger that hasn’t been seen since last year’s playoffs, Roy both tormented and punished the Warriors’ defense. If he wasn’t posting smaller guards like Monta Ellis and Reggie Williams, bumping and elbowing them along the way, he was trying to dunk the ball down Anthony Tolliver’s throat.
When Golden State started clogging and trapping inside, Roy then added some style points, lofting pretty jumpers after crisp jab-steps, hitting nothing but net in the process.
"It was one of those games where I was just hoopin’,’’ Roy said. "That’s what I said to the guys on the bench: ‘This is one of those games where you just have to hoop.’ You know? Because (Golden State) makes it so funky. So once we stopped thinking and worrying about the refs, we started to hoop. And that’s the way I was the whole time, like, ‘So what.’ Just play. Go back to when we were just kids. Hoop.’’
Much was written in the Bay Area about the defense of Monta Ellis against Roy after the Warriors’ win on Nov. 20. The Blazers star was held to 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting and committed three turnovers. While Ellis and the media claimed tenacious defense, Roy was complained that Ellis was allowed to pull, tug and slap at him all game.
However, Roy insists that he didn’t take all the Ellis hype personally, and that it wasn’t a motivating factor.
"I don’t care about that stuff,’’ Roy said. "As long as a guy doesn’t talk trash to me, I don’t really care about what people write. Because sometimes that stuff can come off the wrong way. Someone showed it to me, and I didn’t even read the whole thing. I was like, man, I don’t care about that.’’

I hate when Roy hangs back to complain. Pick your spots, and when the other team is fast breaking ain’t one of them. Might as well be the birdman flapping your wings while the other team breaks down the court.

I thought Bayless was downright wonderful in his man to man D on those two waterbugs
BUT it is hard for me to see everything in a crowded bar, while talking with GOR, and not being able to hear anything.
For example, when Monta fouled out, there was no graphic saying he had 6 fouls, so we didn’t know why he was sitting. We assumed he fouled out, but couldn’t be sure.

I really like that the Blazers have an improved road record this year
makes me feel much better about our chances in the playoffs. I think we’re also doing better against Western teams in general and West playoff teams specifically.

I have a bone to pick with Aldridge.
On the first 3 times he got fouled he yells out "AND ONE" and the ball hasn’t even left his hand/s yet. The first time he yelled "OH, AND ONE."
Not one of those went in, not one was an and one.
This is not H.O.R.S.E. LA.
It got me to thinking; it must be hard to shoot when you’re YELLING at the top of your lungs. Just focus on the shot and let the ref call it.

for practice, we would play this game called “heads down, bottoms up”
basically, you line up to rally and whoever loses, get on all four with their azz facing the opponent at the “T” in the middle of the court, and the winner gets a service shot.
and when it gets to the top 2 players left, the winner gets a shot from someone lobbying an overhead smash

You can put as much effort as humanly possible into it, but when it comes down to shooting a ball from great distances into a rim perched 10-feet high, no matter how pure your heart, you’re still going to have some rough nights. It happens to everyone. Sure, you return to the mean after a while, but there will be stretches where nothing works.
Defense never goes away. It never, ever, goes away. And if your effort is strong and your mind is active, matched with sound communication, the defense will never go away.
Which is why I’m a little scared about the Portland Trail Blazers.
They started slow in this one, missing shots and turning the ball over, and that’s bound to happen no matter how great an offensive team you are. And the Blazers are a great offensive team. The problem is that they’ve been a great defensive team this season, and a poor defensive team this season, and the result is middling. On Thursday, they were great (in a fourth quarter that saw the Warriors score just nine points), and poor (overall, as they allowed a team that averages 106.7 points per 100 possessions score over 114 per 100).
And that worries me. I mean, it shouldn’t be fretting – the Blazers are likely locked into that eighth playoff seed, the team has a somewhat favorable first round matchup with the Lakers coming down the pike (I’m feeling seven games), and the team is really biding its time until everyone returns to full health for 2010-11 – but I do worry about next year. Defensive mindsets have to be established early, and as great a coach as Nate McMillan is, he’s never coached defense.
Don’t be fooled by the amount of points the team gives up. It’s a meaningless number mainly because the Blazers take the air out of the ball on the other end, letting the clock dwindle and giving the opponents fewer chances to score, even if they score with ease at times. The Blazers average the fewest amount of possessions per game, and though the team’s points allowed total is the fifth-best in the NBA, normalized per possession, they only come out 17th in the NBA. This is a mediocre defensive team.
That can be a great defensive team, mind you, as we saw for stretches Thursday night. Because they do stretch. Because even with two 7-footers on the injured list, this team is looooong.
Fantastic game from Brandon Roy(notes) in the win. He scored 41 points on 22 shots without even hitting a three-pointer. Just money, from all over, while getting to the line 17 times. Nine offensive rebounds for Marcus Camby(notes), though the Blazers did turn the ball over on 17 percent of their possessions, super-high for them.
Monta Ellis(notes) and Corey Maggette(notes) returned for the Warriors, and that’s not always a good thing. Ellis was missed down the stretch though, fouling out with nine minutes to go. Nine-for-27 shooting after building a 16-point lead for the Warriors. Collapse city, as sponsored by the Portland Trail Blazers LLC.

Every single comic from that year, released in a book. I got, I think, 1953, 54, 55, and 1957. Could be wrong on the dates but there abouts.
They were great back in the day! And I think they kept being good until he got really old, but not as good as when he was young o’ course.

As much as I think Boston’s defensive coordinator is good, I think a big part of Boston’s defense was everyone buying in because they were old and they didn’t want to get yelled at by KG.
If it was as simple as the coach, every team would have an assistant coach like Thibodeau.

They have a few, but fewer are good at it. I would say Nic, Camby (help-defense especially), Dante, as well as Joel and Greg when healthy are above average. Jerryd and Martell are decent and improving. LaMarcus sadly is a better perimeter than interior defender. Jeff is tough but not (yet) a smart defender, and has rather slow feet. Miller and Rudy and Roy can play defense but don’t always do, plus Roy seems to be the worst at getting back when he feels like he got fouled himself. Juwan is good at boxing out but hopeless one on one. Diener and Mills should have problems against quicker respectively taller guards, but who knows.
The only problem with Swyer's statement about Nate...
is that Kobe would definitely disagree. He’s been quoted as saying Nate is a great defensive coach, based on their shared experience on the Olympic team.

would you take Kobe's word for it, or would you go by the fact that he's never in his career coached an above average NBA defense?
That Olympic team, by the way, gave up 107 points in a 40 minute game, on better than 50% shooting, to Spain and had some pretty decent defensive talent.

Nates problem is that he doesn’t do anything to make his defense spectacular. He leaves it up to his players. When Brandon and LMA aren’t making the effort, things will suck.

I’m saying that Kobe is probably a better judge of coaching defense than either of us. We do not know what goes on in the huddle. We don’t know what Nate coaches and says. All we see is the players playing.
In my opinion (and it’s just an opinion) we tend to give coaches a bit to much credit and a bit too much criticism for what takes place on the court.

Nate may be a defensive genius, I don’t know. All I care about is whether he can get good defense out of his players, and the evidence is that he can’t.
Coaches do have an effect on teams’ defense— just look at what happened with Milwaukee as soon as they hired Skiles. Plenty of other examples like that.

Keep in mind, Titus and Greg are really close friends.
Finally, my two week roller coaster ascended to new heights with the recent news about my friend and former teammate Greg Oden. For those who missed it, nude pictures of Greg have circulated throughout the internet in the last few days. Knowing Greg like I do, I know that he’s really torn up by all of this and I feel bad for him in that regard. At the same time, knowing Greg like I do makes this quite possible the funniest thing to happen during my time at Ohio State. Still, it’s unfortunate it had to happen and I feel badly that it happened to such a good person, which is why I don’t want to make too many jokes about it. I’ll just say that hearing Greg claim that the pictures are a year and a half old and then explaining that he’s "definitely grown a lot since then" made me laugh harder than I have in a very long time.

Harden is their only reliable outlet shooter other than Durant and he is very good at being the scoring presence off of the bench.

they gave up a nearly equally bad number against Sac the previous night. They’ve had really good nights against the Clips and Kings in the past few weeks, but also some pretty bad defensive efforts.

that tells me that Harden has inflated value…i think he’ll improve on his shooting next year, but he’s marginal at best this year

the point is that, as a basketball team puts more players who don’t contribute offensively, the team suffers quite a bit. Giving Durant and Westbrook more touches sounds good, but Harden’s been big for them this year, because he can actually space the floor.

I cringe when Sefolosha puts the ball on the floor. The second unit was already anemic offensively; I think we might be seeing a lot more DJ White and Kyle Weaver (which I’m actually excited about)
Harden's capable of carrying the team in stretches
when no one else can make their shots. But it doesn’t happen often enough that his loss for a few games is going to be a huge blow. Weaver isn’t a bad spot up shooter and he’s more than capable defensively.

Not to answer for Jake, but obviously he’s a huge fan or he wouldn’t be here, and I’m sure he loves the feeling of victories, watching players improve, seeing them become what we hoped, and the shared community we got here.

well you can take music fundamentals and theory at most any college i think...
everybody responds differently emotionally to every music teacher so it’s hard to say. People can be touchy in music theory classes if they don’t keep an open mind or the teacher sucks. I haven’t taken classes at lewis and clark, merrilhurst, reed, or any expensive colleges, just mhcc and psu, both are good for learning how to play piano in group piano classes, or jazz improv classes;I’ve heard good things about PCC, even though they’re dept. is small, but didn’t like that school very much when i tried to go there…

that i took from for 2 years teaches in albany/corvallis/portland/gresham. He definitely can help with teaching fundamentals in most any style, from right hand technique, to basic chord forms and maj. scales, to teaching you how to read jazz chord charts create and your own advanced chord substitutions. Or, if you want, i’ll just teach you out of his book. :-)
i would say i’m average on all parts (theory, playing, etc) and not a beginner and not definitely an expert (experts real musicians like yourself)…

If ya have a bad experience, it won’t be any different from any regular date.
You will get to know the person a little bit through emails and stuff before you go on a date, according to my sister. She got a ton of emails from different suitors, picked who she liked.
My friend who struggles to chat up dames gets tons of emails too. It’s all through the site he uses, so no one has his email or whatever.
If anything seems off, don’t pursue it!

Is guy’s photos for their profile. They’ll have the dumbest one possible as their main photo, but when she looks through their collection of photos she sees much nicer ones.

The players are humans, not robots. Both teams and players play above and below their average at different points in the game and the season.
The fundamental point of playing a game is to win. The Blazers won.
You are pissed off about a very small sample size.
I'm actually not that pissed
I would be if I’d watched it on tv, but I actually got to see them win.
On the other hand, I’ve watched 4 games in that building and seen the Blazers play well for about a quarter and a half total.
The fundamental point about being an NBA franchise is to win championships. The Blazers, as currently constructed, are not doing enough to put themselves in position to do so, coaches and players alike. I want to see them win a championship someday, everything else is secondary.

but I also look at record over the past 10 games heading towards the playoffs. The Blazers are 7-3….which is right up there as far as other teams in the league as we get close to playoffs.

I don't know...don't care.
I want a team that is winning. Playoff basketball is often ugly (stylistically at least)….but has a much larger emphasis on winning (that doesn’t make sense….and I’m not sure I;m saying it correctly).
To me, the playoffs are “win or go home”. And to me, that makes it even more stacked in favor of “don’t care what it looks like as long as it’s a win.”
Look…I throw things at the TV when watching the Blazers play poorly…I scream and cuss and go nuts. But at the end of the day, if they win, I don’t kick the dog.

Which GM will be brave enough to pick Donatas Motiejunas in the top 10 (7'0" PF out of Lithuania with great upside but also bust potential)
I could see Utah doing it. He seems like a player Sloan would like, in the mold of Okur who gets up there in age and could become not cap friendly enough to re-sign (though Donatas is rather a mix of Dirk and Bargnani when everything works out). Or Washington to fill up their depleted front court after the departure of Haywood and Jamison. If he drops all the way to Minny’s second pick, maybe they too though that would really complicate their big man rotation with 3 guys who are potentially very good but not really centers. Not sure Dumars is brave enough to put his career on another Eastern European big man for Detroit.

You have to consider that he’s 19, and Dirk wasn’t buff at that age either. Isn’t really still. But yeah, it’s definitely a gamble.

It’s prolly better to not ever think it’s a good possibility. Dirk is a rare, exceptional creature.
It’s like how fans always think their mediocre young PG is actually the next Billups. That don’t happen that often, don’t count on it!
I think that 7 footer Donatas kid looks skilled and Bargnani isn’t a bad player at all. I think if someone doesn’t take him too high, they’ll be happy with him. I don’t think he’d be a bust-bust, but I’ve only seem that video you posted. That’s just my initial gut reaction.

Looks like he moves better and handles the ball better than Channing.
My worry about his body isn’t really that he’s skinny, but it looks like the sort of body type that will always be weaker for his size. And I got no idea how quick he is to compensate; I assume he isn’t blisteringly fast. So, a defensive liability because he may be too slow for SF on defense, too weak for PF/Cs.
If he’s a dynamite shooter, his size will always create a mismatch, and he looks like he can put it on the floor as well. I like that.

He has a higher career FG% in the playoffs than LeBron. And until recently he had more blocks ;)
Just kidding, but Darko really is not a horrible player. Some Euro guys were, but he’s not. He was drafted too high, but undoubtedly teams have told him something differently than how it turned out. He does have a point there, and I suspect a number of players not just from Europe feel this way. Now it’s best for him to return to Europe, where a team can afford to have more of their offense go through him.
I always liked Darko
He’s tough, angry, good defender and rebounder, and is coordinated enough to be a better version of Joel on offense.
I had hoped we’d get him somehow, we’d use his anger for our advantage, and he’d become our Young Joel. Because I think he has that in him, definitely.
They have a similar career… drafted too high in the lottery, given up on by a few teams, but have the potential to be good role players.

I mostly dislike how some fans think he’s a better option than anyone else on the team. I think if he wasn’t Australian, he likely isn’t drafted. He seems like a short scoring guard, which reminds me of Damon, and Damon might be my least favorite player ever… out of players I dislike for on-the-court reasons. I hate Ruben loads more, for off-the-court stuff.
Any minute that goes to Patty, I’d rather go to Bayless since we should wanna develop him more.
I don’t really hate Patty. I’d just rather have a 15th man like Lindsay Hunter… someone no fan will overrate or want to see play.

But he has played plenty of NBA games and won’t be rattled by just being on the court. We can rely on him to be Blake-esque, just not as good as Blake.
I’d rather work Rudy as a PG over Patty as well.
Basically, I see no reason for Patty to ever play, and I get annoyed when fans assume he’s more of a PG than Bayless/Rudy, or that we need to develop him. More just a pet peeve though.

I would offer him a heavily incentivized contract, no more than 8-10 mil/year guarenteed, no more than a 3 year deal
If he wanted more, then I’d let him become an RFA. Don’t pay too much attention to those numbers (I’m no contract expert), but KP and co. will need to decide how much they are willing to risk and then play hardball with Greg if necessary.

Hmmm good question. I haven't needed to price it out for an event.
The other problem is the broadcast licensing fees that would likely be charged by the NBA.
Other locations to consider:
- A church. Some even have screens and projectors, because they use them for Super Bowls.
- A local gym, but you’d need to get chairs, screens and projectors.
- School cafeteria. Usually they have a screen and projector for assemblies.

I wrote a new JD and it was dumb so I deleted it
It seemed like a funny enough idea. It was titled, “Isn’t it Time Blazers Fans Stopped Hating Kobe”. Then I took all the stuff I hate about Miller, applied it to Kobe, and then wrote a reason why it was time to get over it and stop the hate.
It wasn’t as funny once I typed it out, and folks would have just went off about the alleged rape, so I scrapped it.
