3.10.10-Junk Drawer: Spring Break Ed.

it's Spring Break! A brief reprieve from the tedious decorum of collegiate curriculum. I've never done anything crazy/gone away to some hot beach where people my age spend a few days in a drunken stupor. My friend invited me to go to Panama City, FL but I declined. Mostly because I don't want to spend money. So this week I am relaxing, painting and doing some reading. In the past two weeks I've finished Herzog by Saul Bellow and Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky.  Both of which I liked.

Oh and here are some paintings/drawings I've done recently

oh shoot i think i want to change my vote

i went with greg cause he has cool shirts, but i now realize dre is the correct answer because he is known as a great assists man. He would get me all the lay ups and easy shots i could ever want.
rudy and nic would be the last people i would want to go with. sure they would be cool to hang out with and probably rudy knows how to have fun but they would steal all the shots leaving me with only offensive rebounds to score with.

You should put "hot girl" as one of the options on your survey.

Though if one were to choose Rudy to go with them...

…the hot girls would be quick in appearing. Rudy’s the equivalent of that cologne in the old Chris Rock sketch on Saturday Night Live that I can’t say cause Ben and Dave would put me in the corner for using swear words.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

that's who i voted for

it’d be too hard to get chicks with the blazers players around. at least with Tom, i could settle for the decent looking one instead of the ug-o’s. Tom, of course, would be getting the hot ones.

“There is a technical challenge to meet in order to create the right environment for poison-frogs”.

“Small mistakes can have dramatic results, poison-frog is not easy”

“Poison-frog does not like wet feet.”

“When you start with poison- frogs it is important to take notice of their natural surroundings.” Tell that to The Natural.

“Sudden starts and stops of lights can be stressy for frogs” (media hate there).

“Frog only react on movement.”

“Poison frogs are not easy to obtain, which is a good thing.”

Crime and Punishment.

This book always reminds me a story my father told me. Somewhen in last moments of Franco´s regime, some men were judged in Santander because of political crimes. After the public prosecutor and their lawyers ended their speeches, the accused were given the opportunity to say what they wanted in their defense (that´s the law). Nobody spoke but one of them. “I want to say that everything my lawyer has said is a big lie. I´ve done everything I´m accused of.” When the accused left the court, lawyers, judges and public prosecutor started a spontaneus debate about why this man had had that behavior. My father knew that this man was making a “democratic” curriculum up for the times to come (so when democarcy came to Spain he could get a good post), but my father didn´t say anything. The public prosecutor oponion was that this man was a “kind of Raskolnikov trying to punish himself because he probably had committed other sins and han an unmentionable feeling of guilt.”

by amlmart1 on Mar 10, 2010 4:22 AM PST reply actions

cool story

the public prosecutor sure was naive for a public prosecutor…

by fanfaraway on Mar 10, 2010 4:55 AM PST up reply actions

I still wonder how I could write "public prosecutor oponion" instead of "public prosecutor´s opinion".

Specially considering that “opinion” in Spanish is also “opinion” (just with an accent “opinión”).

Then I check this comment and it looked like: "I still wonder how I coulgd write “public prosecutor oponion” instead of “public prosecutor´s oponion” (Yes, oponion again). Spacially considering…"

I shouldn´tt have watched Blazers game last night.

This 3 paragraph diatribe on Camby's outlet passing is a little overboard...for one thing
In the game’s closing minutes, newly-acquired Marcus Camby saved the Blazers’ hide, making a number of nice hustle plays – including multiple blocked shots – to lead a one-man defensive stand. But let’s not get overly carried away praising Camby’s 6 point, 8 rebound and 5 block performance. His own mental lapses were a reason that the game remained competitive longer than it should have been.

Watching Camby outlet pass the basketball tonight was like watching Andrew from Real World DC attempt to pick up women: uncomfortably and unnecessarily fast-paced and doomed to fail. Just slow down, bro. One step at a time. Step one: Don’t start racing up the floor like the roadrunner for no reason. Step two: Aim your body towards someone wearing the same shirt and shorts combination as you. Step three: make sure your target is one of the smaller players on the court and, importantly, that he is looking in your direction. Step four: Don’t throw the ball like you’re Nolan Ryan in a Tinactin commercial. Leave some of the mustard in the bottle for the rest of the picnickers.

Camby’s attempted tempo-pushing was likely the result of a coaching staff edict to run against one of the league’s weakest defensive teams. Indeed the Blazers racked up 18 fast break points on 7 of 8 shooting, including a number of run out, uncontested layups and dunks. And of course there’s a higher margin for error when the pace picks up, mistakes happen when people rush. But something as simple as an uncontested outlet pass should never result in 4 turnovers by the same player, even if he is playing in a new system and with new teammates. That’s the result of a lack of communication and a lack of court awareness. The Blazers guards need to diligently support their new big in this trying time. Come back further, yell louder and flap those wings. And, please, Camby: Think before you fling.

The rest of the post was equaling negative but at least he diversified

Portland had some trouble keeping its house in order at times, on both ends, but by and large they should be happy with a good home win over a competitive Kings team.
There were flashes, throughout, that have to scare Western Conference squads. Little transition leak-outs or a pass from one 6-11 guy to another 6-11 guy to another 6-11 guy. Even with all the Trail Blazer injuries, there’s a good chance Portland coach Nate McMillan is going to have some pretty phenomenal rotation parts to work with down the stretch and in the playoffs. Especially if Nic Batum and LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) keep going hard.
An injured Jon Brockman(notes) sat in on the Kings telecast for a spell, which was nice.

The teacher liked me because I always knew.

That you need to include theorems for the most painfully obvious things (see above). He was nice enough to allow the class to refer to the partition postulate (sum of the parts is equal to the whole) because I was always correcting someone when they would forget that.

Oddly, it was acid that shortly thereafter taught me that the whole is often greater than the sum of the parts (outside of the partitioning of angles).

haha…

that is a great story. and i agree that the whole is sometimes greater than the sum of it’s parts….although the opposite can be true as well

by DrivetheLane on Mar 10, 2010 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Both are cases of emergence.

One of the fields of research that I love is social psychology and especially phenomena in group psychology. Group think, bystander intervention, poor group performance, and mob behavior are great examples of where a group property emerges that is in in some ways less than the sum of the individuals and what they would have done on their own. Likewise, any optimally performing team will have properties that emerge that make the ability of the group to perform as greater than the sum of individuals.

I think I should make a ‘group work’ JD at some point. I am reminded of how interesting I find it to see how many people and which people have mainly good, bad, or indifferent work with groups when they have to team up for school/work.

As expected

This was a case that was going to be pled out for a lesser sentence. Now we’ll see what Chip does. I’m thinking 1-3 games suspension since unlike LGB it was off-field and James does not have a record of repeatedly flaunting team rules as LGB did.

That's possible, but this is still domestic violence even if it gets pled down.

Punching another football player is one thing. If anything, this might actually look worse. There’ll be lots of pressure to kick him off the team. Based on how harsh he was with Blount, I wouldn’t rule any length of suspension out, nor would I rule his being kicked off the team.

by tingeyga on Mar 10, 2010 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

that's not the team's fault though

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Mar 10, 2010 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

True,

but the current fear is that in the near future the profits from the sports operations isn’t going to be enough to service the debt and then the club will share a similar fate as Leeds and Pompey.

by tingeyga on Mar 10, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. In both those cases, the clubs were financing their day to day operations on debt that assumed higher revenues than could reasonably be achieved (e.g. they were paying their players more than they could afford).

In United’s case, it was just a heavily leveraged buyout where the profits from the team are being used to make the interest payments to service the debt. If the team’s revenues are unable to service the debt, I’d say that puts the Glazers in tenuous position as owners, but you wouldn’t want to mess with the team’s business model (because the team’s operation is still profitable). The Glazers have to make the interest payments either way, so cutting costs on the team and taking the chance that that will impact the revenue flow doesn’t really benefit them.

by atomiccafe on Mar 10, 2010 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

I hate United, but Madrid is much worse. At least Ferguson has a philosophy and a decent eye for talent. Sure they spend a lot of money, but they also develop guys like Ronaldo and Vidic and Rooney.

AND IT'S OVER

Real Madrid missed a boatload of chances in the first half—they really could have been through. But Lyon was a different team after halftime. They put some pressure on, scored a really nice goal and defended conservatively but well. Madrid never looked like threatening after going behind.

Basically, this is like the Twins beating the Yankees. Lyon really has to sell most of their top prospects every year, and it’s teams like Real (spent 350 million over the offseason) who are doing the buying.

I don't think you can compare those guys.

Those two are faster in the open field than Rodgers. I think he’s not going to be as dangerous catching the ball because of that. If he gets with a team with great blocking and an offensive line that gives him enough time to make cuts, he can be a decent 3rd down back in the NFL I guess, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Mar 10, 2010 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

I am going to have to agree with them cloudy

Sproles and MJD both returned kicks in college. This hints at their top end speed. Also note that number of long touchdowns runs that Sproles and MJD had in college. As good as Jacquizz is, he hasn’t shown either of those two facets in his game. As such I would think that this would hurt his overall professional oppourtunities.

Kulash was critical of EMI in an opinion piece he wrote for the New York Times last month. In particular, the singer took the company to task for blocking the band’s famous, self-directed, videos from appearing on the websites of fans and bloggers. "In these tight times, it’s no surprise that EMI is trying to wring revenue out of everything we make, including our videos," an obviously frustrated Kulash wrote. "But it needs to recognize the basic mechanics of the Internet. Curbing the viral spread of videos isn’t benefiting the company’s bottom line, or the music it’s there to support. The sooner record companies realize this, the better — though I fear it may already be too late."

SN: Was it, essentially, a matter of not being able to play with Tyreke Evans?

KM: I don’t think it was that. Tyreke and I never had a problem. I do think, maybe they wanted to use him more as a two-guard, so that made sense for them to do that.

I like Green’s effort and tenacity, I just worry that he’s being typecast as the third wheel, when he’s really a nice role player. What’s the general consensus around Sonic fans?

#52

by Cablinasian on Mar 10, 2010 4:45 PM PST up reply actions

That without some pretty major change, he's not going to work as a starting 4 on a championship team.

He either needs to stroke the 3 at >40% or seriously bulk up or OKC needs to luck out somehow with a top 5 center. That’s the feeling anyway, though everyone also acknowledges that Krstic is pretty much the worst center he could be paired with. Personally, I’m interested to see what he would look like with a Camby/Haywood-like presence in the middle.

Green’s got a ton of heart, and he’s a good team defender, but he’s too small to seal off the post against the larger PFs. As it is, his strengths just don’t outweigh his weaknesses at this point. I will say that he’s a great guy to have in at crunch time cause he seems to have a knack for making big plays.

by sammy on Mar 10, 2010 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

All that said,

I think he’d make a terrific starting 3 for somebody… he’d could be one of the best defensive 3’s in the league.

even the ultimate stretch 4 in Shard has a lot more wingspan. I think it’s Green’s height and his really short arms that prevent him from post defense.

Do people think they’ll get Camby or Haywood? Sure seems like Camby is destined to get overpaid by Denver, NY, or Portland, and Haywood by Cuban.

#52

by Cablinasian on Mar 10, 2010 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

No, Camby's the type of player we want but doesn't really fit the timeline.

And Cuban will likely spend quite a lot to retain Haywood. Those two are better than whatever OKC is likely to land. Dalembert and Biedrins’ names were tossed around a lot by fans at the trade deadline, but I doubt Presti would make a move for either of them, and Biedrins and Dalembert aren’t really acquisitions that give you a little hop in your step in the morning.

Everyone knows this is an issue on the roster and that it’ll need to be addressed, and we’re just trusting Presti to find a way to address it. I mean, we’re not stupid, we see what’s out there and it ain’t much. This summer will be a big test because Durant and Green are up for extensions soon and if the team is to take advantage of it’s ~12m in cap space, it’ll have to be now.

I think the goal is for Green to develop into more of an Odom-type player

which would be fantastic, of course. But at present he’s no where near the rebounder.

basically through tweets, you can give out where you are, or in this case that you are not home. This web is trying to show people that they are basically declaring “I’m not home” which is why the website is called please rob me.

Per the functions of an open twitter account, I could sort through someone’s mail, find out their name, follow them, find out when they’re not home and then rob them. I believe that’s how it would work.

My understanding is that the devices automatically display your coordinates

although there almost certainly is a way to turn it off. Some people like having the ability to geotag photos, or whatever benefits there are to having your cellphone be location aware.

One of the next big things in advertising is figuring out a way to take the location of your cellphone and using your location to help decide what ads to show you if you do a Google search. So if you are standing across the street from a McDonalds and do a search for something, Google could take your location, figure out that you are nearby a McDonalds and show you an ad for whatever is in the Happy Meal that week to entice you.

tinsley, ford, murphy, dunleavy all expire after 2010-11. psycho t was pretty good in his limited time this year, and he could be an excellent big off the bench.

if they managed to get wall/turner, then they could possibly sign a big name player in the 2011 offseason, or they could trade their ecs and get someone good. combine that with a solid 2011 draft, and that’s a pretty good team.

granted it’s a lot of ifs, but it’s possible that they could become pretty good.

that's an interesting post

couple of observations:

1) His hypothesis is basically that the Ewing theory results from bad game planning and execution: despite the star player giving the team an advantage, the game plan is not playing to the strengths of the roster. This doesn’t indicate the team has improved without their star, just that their gameplan sucked and they should have fired their coach for being unable to take advantage of their strengths.

2) This, which the author plays off as a difficult to explain position, is actually relatively simple:

It’s not terribly easy to find justification for this assumption: a good player never takes only 2% of his team’s shots, and no one in their right mind would ever try to take every single shot for his team (insert Allen Iverson joke here). But there is definitely evidence for a negative correlation between a player’s field goal percentage and the number of shots he takes.

In basketball, every player will get a certain number of really easy opportunities (putbacks, wide open three pointers, fast break layups). After that, it’s a slope down to Allen Iverson shooting against all five defenders. It’s only natural that players would forego more difficult shots first, which explains the correlation between useage and efficiency.

3) Simmons’ column’s only example of the “Ewing theory” in basketball is Ewing himself. Ewing’s case only involves a single playoff series. The Knicks victory over the Pacers is likely explained by the Pacers’ short-term inability to adjust to the new Knicks gameplan with Ewing out of the game rather than Ewing’s absence actually making the Knicks better.

The other examples (from baseball and football) are easily explained in that an individual player in both sports has a relatively small impact on the quality of his team. The salience of ANY theory explaining results in football is further undermined by the small number of games and the degree to which randomness dictates success.

King Penguins are notorious for their prim, tuxedoed appearance — but a recently discovered all-black penguin seems unafraid to defy convention. In what has been described as a “one in a zillion kind of mutation,” biologists say that the animal has lost control of its pigmentation, an occurrence that is extremely rare. Other than the penguin’s monochromatic outfit, the animal appears to be perfectly healthy — and then some. “Look at the size of those legs,” said one scientist, “It’s an absolute monster.”

by Starvin' Marvin on Mar 10, 2010 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

you're exactly right

the white belly is there for the reason that when penguins swim in the water a predator beneath them will look up and see white, which blends with the sky. This black penguin will stand out, therefore much easier for a predator to catch him.

Yeah, I did a project on Penguins in the 5th grade.

idk i cant find the paper on my computer

i replaced my hd a while ago and i think its on my other hd

but

Penguins have a lighter color on the belly and a darker color on their back, which helps camouflage them when they are in the water. When swimming, the dark colour is on top, making them hard to see from above. When predators underwater look up at the penguins, the white part is hard so see against the light.
. They mostly have blackish upperparts and whitish underparts on both the abdomen and flippers. This helps to camouflage the penguin against the lighter sky when viewed from below, and the darker waters when viewed from above, making them harder to spot by both predators and prey

The black at the top is so that birds of prey cannot see them and attack them. Also, since penguins basically have no features that make them quick or strong, they have to rely on camouflage to keep them safe.

Logo fail
Marc Delphine was fond of the logo a volunteer had designed for his campaign for a U.S. Senate seat in Oregon: a silver star wrapped in a star-spangled banner that his designer told him evoked the letter ‘D’ for branding purposes.

It certainly was a memorable symbol. In fact, it was already being used by the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, as Delphine was stunned to discover on Wednesday.

let's get Dallas

we’ve beaten them 3(?) times this season and their record isn’t as good as it seems. I think we can take them. They’re one of the few teams in the West without a crippling mismatch for them to exploit. Sure, Dirk is friggin’ deadly, but I don’t see him as a mismatch they way I see Carmelo as a mismatch. We have the length to bother Dirk just enough.

Throwing this out there on my break – get back to ya later

Is the stats table close to mike & mike? Near the end of the game they (mike & mike) gave Camby the block when clearly Batum blocked Evan’s on that drive that ended on the right side of the back board. Camby didn’t come close to blocking the shot from what I could see.

I checked the box score several hours after the game and Batum had zero blocks.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Well, it wasn't infuriating like Fahrenheit 9/11

I felt like a lot of it was pretty obvious stuff. He wasn’t really arguing for the abolishment for all of capitalism, just the fixing of the broken stuff, and who wouldn’t agree with that? It was heavy on criticism, short on solutions. I’m surprised he didn’t go after Obama, as I know he isn’t a huge fan.

Mostly, the movie had me thinking about my own greed and my own role in society. I work for one of the big evils, and ultimately the harder I work, the more money some rich guy makes. Makes me wonder if life as a whole would be better making a lot less money doing something that helps people. It’s a tough pill to swallow, for sure.

Overall, definitely worth the watch. Much less of a hit piece on one party, more of a hit piece on greed.

He’s not bigger, he’s not more athletic, but he’s totally in control of his limbs and if he gets the ball close to the basket, he just puts it in. Has a jumper, he just shoots it. He doesn’t waste time with gangliness or anything not needed, it seems.

hard to project where they'll land

they have a great road record, a good non-conference RPI, 3 road wins over the RPI top 100 and a good overall record. Unfortunately, they also have no top-50 RPI wins, one terrible loss and a weak overall strength of schedule.

Lunardi has them as a 10, others like Jerry Palm has them as a 13. I would be fine with an 11 or 12.

The "Flo" girl in those insurance commercials is on Mad Men too

Just so you know!!!!

Mad Men is great, but I’ve only seen 12 episodes of the 1st season and then some of the 3rd. My cable’s On Demand adds an episode from the 1st season each week so I’ve been watching it that way.

Sometimes I get impatient and wanna just watch them all at once, but this builds character.

I don't remember if I've brought this up in the JD before, but

I don’t seem to listen to female vocalists. I’d say female bands or bands with female lead vocalists make up less than 10% of my iTunes. That may be a generous figure. Does anyone else have that big a disparity in male-female tracks in their listening habits?

I've thought about that too

Looking now, I got Aimee Mann, Bikini Kill, Camera Obscura, Nico and The Velvet Underground, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, L7, Tegan and Sara, Breeders, The Vivian Girls, Billie Holliday, Mamas and Papas, uhhhhhh I had more on my laptop that died. I lost a lot of music then. I feel like I am forgetting some.

I am not crazy about all of ‘em and I don’t have everything of most of ‘em but I do like the ones listed at least a lil’ bit.

I definitely got a lot more male-sung music, though.

i am worse then that

i would say it makes up roughly 2% of my library. My main problem is that as someone who mainly listens to hip hop there aren’t many girl rappers to begin with. on top of them the ones that are out there are usually terrible but there are some i enjoy. Like Butterfly from Digable Planets and this chick idk anything about her other than this song which i got as part of a guys album but it’s decent.
