trade idea part 1
so i have two trade ideas for the blazers. the first one is pretty straight forward, and i think very plausible. basically, the blazers send steve blake and travis outlaw to the wizards for brendan haywood. to me this is a win win. the wizards are 23 million over the cap, so to trade one expiring contract into two when theyre already out of the playoff race anyway makes sense to them. for the blazers it would be huge for them to get a legit 7 foot, 270 pound TRUE center whos been around 8 years and would provide exactly what the blazers are lacking right now on the interior. there probably isnt a spot for him past this year, (unless oden and joel arent ready by next years training camp) but hes an unrestricted free agent this summer anyway, so he doesnet really need one. it would be sad to see steve and travis go, theyve been here longer than most, but i think this would make them a better basketball team over the final 30 or so games this year. heres the espn trade machine link. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine. tell me what yall think. il have a part 2 later that'll require a little bit more imagination.

actually, the opposite
it would take them further over the cap (7.6 million > 6 million). Since all 3 guys involved are on expiring contracts, this year’s dollars are the only ones that matter. this year, Blake + Outlaw make more than Haywood. it’s a money loser for Washington.
"I want to be traded to a contender" is almost always code-speak for "I'm a loser."

Wizards won't do this
This deal actually costs them money. Blake and Outlaw’s combined salaries are 7.6 million. Haywood’s is 6.0 million. So this just costs the Wizards 1.6 million without providing any assets.
To have this make any sense, the Blazers would at least have to take on someone else’s salary, like DeSuck Stevenson. But even that is likely not enough. If the Wizards aren’t going to net an actual asset, they’ll probably just hold on to Haywood. To make the Wizards bite, the Blazers will have to offer at least some sweeter (Patty Mills, the rights to foreign player, a draft pick, etc.). The Wiz are apparently demanding Rudy Fernandez, which I doubt Portland is willing to part with for a short term rental.

My initial trade proposal included Oberto, to match salaries. But I had Webster in the deal instead of Travis, because I thought “maybe the Wiz would like to receive something more long-lasting for Haywood than just salary relief” (silly me)
But I have no problem dealing Blake + Outlaw for Haywood + Oberto. And I suspect there will have to be some sweetener added, like Patty Mills or the rights to (pick one) Claver, Koponen or Freeland and/or some of Paul Allen’s money. But no Rudy, no Bayless, and definitely no Batum
If that’s the best offer that Grunfeld thinks he can get for Haywood, then I would pull the trigger and worry about what happens with Haywood (etc) after the season. Would KP make this deal, depending on how much sweetener he had to add? That’s a tough one, we know he likes Blake and Outlaw and so do Brandon and the coaches. But maybe the games against L*A and Utah emphasized the need for interior defense and perhaps the playoffs are more important to the front office than keeping the roster unchanged? Maybe KP thinks he can get Blake or Outlaw “back” this summer as FAs? We’ll just have to wait and see
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Like it.
Don’t think it will happen.

Keep the faith.
having more expiring contracts doesn't mean you save money
brenden makes less than trav and blake, combines, so there is little incentive for washington to do this, other than to bring steve blake home
Awesomeness (ô'səm-nes)
1. n. Something that inspires awe
2. n. Nicolas Batum
This rumor was on 95.5 the game today - but I can't find the ESPN reference they made
Here is the link that discussed it: it begins at the 36:30 mark and continues into the next hour. They attribute it to a Chris Sheridan chat.
A few callers seemed to be familiar with it and mentioned that Portland would be throwing in $3M in cash. Not being discussed is that each players Bird’s rights are retained. Both radio guys were pretty clueless about this. (esp. that dumb Duck, Jay)
Proof of this: Jay “Can’t sign anyone if you’re over the cap” Hmmm let’s see there’s the vet minimum, bi-annual exception, mid-level exception, bird right’s exception.
If this is real, I’m heavy in the “pull the trigger” camp. I’m not convinced that Przybilla won’t use his early termination option, wherein the Blazers would then be desperate for a big man.
10/11
Miller/ Bayless
Roy/ Fernandez
Batum/ Web
Ald/ TBD
Oden/ Haywood
If Przybilla returns TBD could very well be Oden playing PF and the Blazers going with huge with a four man big rotation. Cunningham/ Pendergraph could fit the bill or eventually Freeland.

how many times
is this idea gonna go up? the wizards do this last minute if they’ve got nothing else going.
I, for one hope we trade blake this season
and then re-sign him in the off season. Steve blake is like the gift that keeps on giving.
