Don't worry about this game

Every team has bad shooting nights. The players will get a little time off to recharge their batteries soon.

by Timmay! on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM PST reply actions

This is very true.

Combine that with the fact that we have also had some great wins that we probably shouldn’t have gotten (see: Texas), so I can live with losses like this.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Feb 9, 2010 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

If you haven't noticed the players have been on vacation since the Lakers game

This team is has checked out. It’s not that they lose, its that they have no energy and play sloppy and terrible.

They’re gonna get slaughtered by Phoenix as well.

by Neama on Feb 9, 2010 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

Thats what everyone said about the LA game

but OKC is a direct competitor with us in the standings, and we just got handled. And I’m tired of using the injury excuses. This team as it stands now can play when they want to.

by 01B5S4 on Feb 9, 2010 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

they look beat
they can't keep it together for more than 5 minutes.

by BatumRaider on Feb 9, 2010 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

and for the second game in a row

Nate calls a late timeout, I expect him to sit LMA with the game out of hand, and we come back from the commercial break and he’s still on the court. Apparently we can afford to run another guy to the ground

by tblazers on Feb 9, 2010 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

I was at the game. What the hell was Nate McMillan thinking puting in THAT lineup?

“Yes, we’re ahead by 2, may as well put in 3 players who have NOT SCORED AT ALL THROUGHOUT THE GAME….that should do it.” Nate lost the game for us with that fourth quarter lineup.

by Natsthecat on Feb 9, 2010 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree

The line up with Blake in it was worse.

by The Thinker on Feb 9, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions

The starting line up for the 4th was: Bayless, Rudy, Cunningham, Webster and

Juwan. Other than Cunningham…THE WORST POSSIBLE LINE UP TO START THE 4TH QTR. OK..maybe Juwan is ok..but not great against this young team. The others…Bayless, Rudy and Webster…0 points in the FIRST 3 QUARTERS…let’s start the ICE COLD guys when we are up by 2. That should do it…

by Natsthecat on Feb 9, 2010 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

Worst period of play ever!

Miller was the only shining light in the 4th and even he made some terrible mistakes.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

by RipCity on Feb 9, 2010 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely...

Worst game ever by Rudy. Terrible shooting, terrible shot selection, terrible passing, terrible defense, I think he had one rebound.

I love Rudy when he is on but he is wildly inconsistent. As inconsistent as anyone thinks Martell or Outlaw is, Rudy has shown no consistency as a Blazer…He has not had much of the starting chance as those two but even with fairly consistent minutes he’s fairly inconsistent…

by clinchmobb on Feb 9, 2010 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

3 back of OKC in the loss column

and the tiebreak now stands at 1-1

I don’t think OKC is our competition for making it or not making it into the top 8, but I would like to finish ahead of them either way.

Roy back after ASG or else we are in trouble.

by JasonT on Feb 9, 2010 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

Well, I don't think the Spurs make the playoffs personally.

Their schedule is probably the toughest out of all the teams. 3-16 against the top 8 of the West. Lakers, Nuggets, and the Jazz will most likely be the top 3. I think Mavs will be 4th. Unless the Blazers creep up to 5th, I don’t see them winning 1st round. As of right now, I don’t see the Blazers in 5th.

I was referring to a regular season game. And I said “playoff contender” not “playoff team.” I think you could at least acknowledge that the Spurs are a playoff contender.

Rudy vs. Bayless tonight

I know the individual game +/- thing is of an unknown value but Rudy was 0 for 6 tonight in 23 minutes and still managed a +6 while Bayless played 14 and shot 2 for 7 yet finished with a -19. Nate kept Bayless in with 5 minutes remaining but sat Rudy. I get going with the flow of the game but it was pretty clear Rudy was trying all night to make things happen as an energy guy. Why wouldn’t you put him in when you’re down by 7 with the clock ticking?

by cchellis on Feb 9, 2010 9:36 PM PST reply actions

rudy was playing the up tempo game when he was in and that is when the blazers did well

OKC was focusing on stopping LMA in the post and getting out in the open court got them away from that and that opened up the lanes to the slashers

I wanted to see a technical from him really bad tonite. The team needed him to throw a clipboard, chair, or something...

The only guys who were BRINGING it were Miller, Dante, and LMA. Problem was that nobody could get the ball to LMA. Batum was nice in the first half but disappeared in the second. Blake played great D on Westbrook and got people involved but couldn’t hit anything. Howard was well, Howard (solid). Everyone else (that would be you Rudy, Martell, and Bayless!) sucked and I mean sucked…

I think the Blazers spent too much effort trying to post up LMA.

He didn’t have much success all game long compared to the turnovers and time wasted trying to pass the ball inside. They were more effective running off rebounds, drives, and pick/pops. It didn’t help that Bayless and Rudy were the backcourt for a significant amount of time. Starting Blake in the 2nd half and not having either Miller/Blake at the start of the 4th quarter hurt. Blake, Rudy, Bayless, and Webster combined to shoot 1-19. That’s not gonna get it done, but the momentum swung abruptly at the start of the 4th quarter.

I’ll have to go through the plays again, but I don’t think LMA got the ball often in the 4th quarter. What else is new, but they didn’t really seem to make an effort to give him touches on every possession. It was a lot of wild driving by Miller, Jerryd, and bricked 3s.

by Norsktroll on Feb 9, 2010 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

LMA couldn't get the ball because he couldn't seal off his man.

I agree

It is the offensive concept that the players are stuck in. kicking it out should be the last resort. They also swing the ball around the perimeter too much. that just wastes time and some times the ball actually move farther and farther from the basket. The players are afraid of the paint. They pass up an 8 foot shot and pass to a guy who’s covered for a 20 foot shot

The wear and tear of dealing with all the injuries is really starting to show.

They’ve been fighting all season and now for almost a month have been without their leader so I’m not particularly surprised. Getting Brandon back after the All-Star Break as well as some rest will hopefully do them some good. Plus the schedule ahead, while full of Western conference rivals, isn’t quite as intense for the most part.

Rudy has never struck me as a guy who has confidence issues.

The shots he takes are usually shots taken by players who are confident. I’m talking about step back jumpers and catch and shoot. Players will slump and Rudy isn’t immune to it. I don’t think Nate is affecting Rudy as much as you think.

yes it's nate's fault that rudy has been all around disappointing in his 2nd season

the 26 minutes per game he averaged as a rookie on a playoff team weren’t enough for his confidence. they were 8 more than nic batum got who for whatever reason has not been afflicted by the dreaded nate sapping confidence disease that makes players worse.

your login name sort of gives away your bias here btw. facts are facts, rudy has not been anywhere near the same player this year and pinning that on the coach is more than silly.

When do coaches ever improve the confidence of a player?

Thats not even part of their job description. Phil Jackson is considered one of the best ever and I cant think of any player’s confidence he has greater affected. Don Nelson? Tomjanovich? It doesnt really happen like that. Some players just make more shots because they’re better and more consistent than others. Rudy is not consistent.

We need to pick which ones of the Miller/Blake/Bayless/Rudy/Travis/Webster/Batum group we want to keep and make sure we trade a couple of the others for whatever to clear the logjam and make sure people are comfortable knowing they’ll have minutes. I don’t even need equal value back at this point.

Free AK1984

by jksnake99 on Feb 9, 2010 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

I don't like that idea.

Blazers do need a legit PG on this team. Without Miller and Blake, I think there’s gonna be more nights like tonight. Roy isn’t a long term solution. Bayless and Rudy can’t run the offense so I would want a PG in return if Miller or Blake is traded. With the SF position, Outlaw is expiring this year, if you don’t care about getting value in return, might as well let him go via free agency. I think the smart play is to take on a long term “depreciated” contract. Similar to Crawford and what he’s doing for the Hawks.

The guy at the top is Hinrich for me, mostly for his defense and ability to play the 2-guard. He won’t solve all the problems, but he’ll be a decent value player in return.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 9, 2010 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

Why can't Bayless and Roy work as the longterm backcourt?

If Bayless improves his finishing a bit at the cup, he can be like Tony Parker—not a true facilitator but basically like a secondary perimeter playmaker.

Hinrich has played like poo this year. I have no idea why we’d pay him the millions he’s due.

by atomiccafe on Feb 9, 2010 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

To be frank.

Bayless hasn’t proven that he can be a starter in this league. His production is off and on, can’t shoot from the outside, and his defense is inconsistent.

I project Bayless to be a fire-starter off the bench as a scoring PG or SG.

See my post on likely available centers, ideally a guy like Okafor if we are planning for the future and not just a stop gap. If we could get someone like Iggy/Butler/Wallace by all means do it. My idea today posted in a few places was Nelson, Gortat, Barnes for Blake, Bayless, Webster, Outlaw, Pendergraph which would work. NY, Magic, Heat are reportedly the teams interested in Steve, and also willing to move around a few pieces. The Heat have nothing of interest to offer.

by Norsktroll on Feb 9, 2010 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

I can't see Wallace on the trading block.

Between Iggy and Butler, I can’t help but think their skills would be under appreciated in the Blazers offense. Much like how Jefferson is languishing in the Spurs role.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 9, 2010 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

McMillan is ancillary to the future success of the Blazers. Everything rests on Oden. Everything.

this insanity is killing the team

oden was a mistake. the blazers need to move on from it, not exacerbate it but basing their future around his healthy return. that’s just poor planning at this point.

the blazers are not without tradeable assets that they can use to acquire a good big man and they have some decent players to build around.

they do have to cross their fingers that brandon roy proves durable which isn’t the best bet but without him they might as well blow the whole thing up and start over so that you do have to count on.

by colinmarsh on Feb 9, 2010 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

this is why the okafor play is appealing to me

you can’t trade Oden at this point – you won’t get anything back that is worth giving up his potential for. but at the same point, you don’t want to put all your eggs in that basket either. Grabbing Okafor is a win-win. if oden pans out, Okafor is your longterm backup 5/4 that gives you a monster 3 big rotation. if oden doesn’t pan out, you have a quality starter in okafor, and can move on from there

"I want to be traded to a contender" is almost always code-speak for "I'm a loser."

okafor would be real nice and NO might well blow things up

they might consider rudy + expirings for him. they were ready to hand chandler away last year so maybe.

also i’m not advocating the blazers trade oden, i’m well aware he has no trade value. i’m just saying that they should not exacerbate the situation by extending him and planning with him as the core of the team.

by colinmarsh on Feb 9, 2010 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

except Jefferson is suffering

because he’s old and not very good. Since 2006, he’s been over 17 PER once, and his defense is declining. He racked up some raw numbers gunning for bad teams, but wasn’t a great player. Iggy has been over 18 PER for the last 3 full seasons, and his widely recognized as a top perimeter defender. What indication do you have that an excellent player like that would be wasted? I know our sets are a bit stagnant, but really, nobody could make a play tonight. We have a real lack of quality going toward the basket outside Dre and Roy, and Dre is old.

by atomiccafe on Feb 9, 2010 10:32 PM PST up reply actions

Iggy plays in a system that works for him.

Uptempo and fast. He lacks outside shooting to be an effective halfcourt SF for the Blazers. Batum has the skills to be a better fit.

part system, part consistent minutes and role

Frye even said as much – the coaches and teammates will get mad at him if he DOESN’T shoot. that and he knows he’s going to play whether or not he makes the shot – a good shot is a good shot, and you don’t want to get your guys thinking “gee, should I take this or not – if I miss, i might get benched” I still say the biggest problem many of our young guys are having is a lack of a defined, consistent role and the minutes that go with it, which in turn can derail their confidence. yes, some of that is injury related, but some of it is our depth working against us

If KP is offered Durant for Roy straight up, and doesn’t take it, he’s a fool, he deserves to be fired. Any fan who wouldn’t do that trade is valuing a player over the team. That’s not fandom in my book. I’m a Trail Blazer fan first, and a fan of any particular Trail Blazer second.

If the choice is between Roy and no title or no Roy and a title, give me the latter every time.

Roy is an all star for years to come. Durant is a better play now, and better player going forward. It’s really a no brainer, especially when you throw in injury history and age.

peace man dont get lost in that blizzard

trust me

it would get old quick.

there’s 8" on the ground right now outside my building, and it’s still coming down at a rate of almost an inch an hour.

add ridiculous temps with high winds, and you would hate it after a week.

Nic and Miller and Cunningham played decently tonight...and Blake did provide energy. That's about it

Get a coach who starts the 4th quarter with players who’ve ACTUALLY SCORED during the game. Blake, Rudy, Webster, Bayless and Juwan…HELLO…WHERE DID MCMILLAN decide this????

by Natsthecat on Feb 9, 2010 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

i think cunningham was better than decent

it was one of the better games i can remember him playing. it continues to amaze me that i don’t think i’ve ever seen him force a bad shot and he’s a rookie.

Pay off for the lovely effort tonight....start and play for 48 minutesin Phoenix: Webster, Bayless,

Rudy. Start Mills to give him experience. JP & Cunningham for the same reason. I’d substitute in Blake and LA.

Nate "No T's" McMillan

Free Throws were 28 to 14 in favor of OKC. How many non calls did Miller and Bayless have tonight and not a word from the Coaches. The last foul on Bayless when he tried to the charge should have been an automatic T from our Coaches after the call on the other end. A good Coach takes a T from time to time just to fire his players up…..

by dawgman47 on Feb 9, 2010 10:58 PM PST reply actions

The FT difference was mainly because Portland was throwing up jumpers all night.

There were a few questionable calls, but really nothing huge.

Whether a T from Nate would get his team riled up is certainly a fair point for debate…

by Timmay! on Feb 9, 2010 11:00 PM PST up reply actions

free throw disparity by itself is not a sign of uneven officiating

the many more calls okc got were largely the result of turnovers leading to fouls in transition and men being left open for unabated cuts to the hoop.

it’s not the official’s job to make sure calls are even.

We're still in the 8th spot...

and three games ahead of Houston. We have some breathing room, but we have to win against Phoenix to maintain our dignity going into the break. Then hopefully Roy will be healthy enough to rejoin the team next week, and Outlaw a week later. Even though we have hit a tough stretch, I’m still very proud of how this team has managed to keep a winning record in spite of all the injuries. We must not lose hope!

I support LaMarcus 100%. He's only 24 - not even in his prime yet. He's improved in each of his first three seasons. He will only get better.

Well then maybe the Blazers won't maintain their dignity. Because the Blazers will be on a BACK TO BACK

Phoenix OTOH has been off…since playing on Friday..thank you NBA schedulers. So hey…they are not going to win. That is pretty much guaranteed. Good news is that maybe we trade some of our potential…or get another coach in the off season. One that will know which players to start the 4th qtr. when we are up by 2 pts…..someone other than Bayless, Rudy, Webster, Juwan…and Cunningham. The FIRST THREE OF WHOM DID NOT SCORE AT ALL IN THE FIRST 3 QUARTERS…when I saw that lineup I KNEW the Blazers were not going to win.

Also note to LA and Rudy…please do not party on the night before the game.

on a positive note...

… i will be going to sleep soon.

Hari-Kiri

If we end up in a first-round series against LA, can we just forfeit? If the NBA adopts that talked-about “play-in” for the 8th seed, can you tank it intentionally? Seriously, with a 7-7-7-7 format, what the heck is the point of being an 8th seed? Oh, wait — extra ticket sales.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
