yes, but

it would seem that he will be 100% ready by then, which was somewhat in doubt due to the severity of the patella tendon injury and his age

I still doubt Joel will opt out, or that KP will deal him in 10 days

Wow!

Still, I’m surprised he’s healing so quickly.

In Bayless I trust.

This is wonderful,

Can quell those who were worried he might not make a return and thus facilitate a trade to replace him. Knowing more surely that he will be healthy by training camp (and is indeed looking good—month and a half ahead of schedule!) would suggest even more that we not make a major trade. We will not find a better back-up center than Joel, who is a beast in his own right, but a humble beast who can play his role in the second unit.

Are you certain?

This news might increase Joel’s trade value. Trade value is more valuable when it is fresh.

by tominhawaii on Feb 8, 2010 7:24 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

I thought trade value needed to mature a while, so as to let it be discussed thoroughly in fan forums.

No trade rumor is worth anything until enough fans are sure of it that they can blame the GM for not doing it. It takes more than one guy being convinced, you know.

Until half of the Internet is up in arms at the GM’s stupidity in not doing the deal, the trade value is worthless, IMO.

Absolutely

We have to remember that trade value exists primarily in the minds of Internet commenters. When have you ever heard a GM or a coach say “trade value”? As bizarre as it seems, they are actually looking to win games rather than increase “trade value”.

And they don’t want “trade value”, they want to get players who will help win games. So they will identify those players and then figure out which players they have to give up to get them, and if it is worth it. “Trade value” is only important on the Internet.

Since trade rumors primarily live, breathe, and grow on the Internet as well, they are very important to “trade value”. If no one ever discusses trading someone, they have very low trade value.

The problem is if there are too many trade rumors. You need a balance. If there are too many, everyone thinks a player has no trade value, so opposing fans don’t want him, so trade rumors about him die.

This is why the Blake haters who always say, “Trade Blake!” are shooting themselves in the feet. They run the risk of killing his trade value. What they really should be saying is, “Blake is untouchable, unless you send us Chris Bosh or Chris Paul.” In the real world, it doesn’t matter much, but in terms of trade value, it’s deadly.

You need to be careful about Andre in this regard. You should not try to start too many rumors or undersell him in your proposals, or you run the risk of killing his trade value. Too few proposals and he has no value. Too many rumors, or rumors that are too weak, will kill his trade value, and we won’t be able to unload him in any Internet deals. Then, the only way we can get rid of him is if KP does it, but who wants to wait for that?

I think Tom might be helping Miller's trade value in this regard.

By having one person be this negative, the remaining fan base becomes polarized the other direction, pushing his trade value even higher. So by using the predictability of human nature, Tom has brilliantly increased Miller’s trade value to the point where he’s more valuable than LaMarcus Aldridge.

That's all part of my plan

That 52 point game helped too, it’s better than pancake makeup covering up the blemishes of all his other games.

Curses!

I never thought of that!

Out-smarted by TiH again!

I may have to leave Bedge forever to hide my blushes.

If only “trade value” meant something, with Tom on our side we’d rule the world!

Er, um, wait a minute.

Can we talk about something else?

nothing that you, tom or I say on the internet has any affect on trades

and that also goes for media types like Sam Smith, John Hollinger, Peter Vecsey, et al (even though they may have access to “inside sources” that we do not)

But NBA GMs do have a “book” on every player and they know “who’s worth what” based on their past, present production, contract and future. Normally we only hear about this “ongoing evaluation process” at draft time, when referring to prospects (like during the Oden vs Durant process leading up to the ‘07 draft) A player’s “trade value” (or whatever GMs choose to call it) will rise and fall due to a variety of factors.

One of the most overt is a trade demand made public. Ideally a GM prefers to deal from a position of strength, but when “everybody knows” that player X is unhappy and has requested a trade then it becomes difficult to acquire the full value of what he was worth, before the demand.

Another example is injuries, an injured player like Joel or Travis is seen as a greater “risk” to the receiving team, and the GM of a team that has multiple injuries (like Portland) will have a more-difficult time finding equitable deals than a GM of a team full of healthy, relatively happy players on a winning team.

This is basic stuff, to deny it exists except “out on the internet” is silly. The NBA is no different than any other business, although it’s difficult to make a direct comparison between fans and shareholders

Gasp!
to deny it exists except "out on the internet" is silly

Are you alleging that my comment was “SILLY”???!!!!11111

I am so deeply offended I shall never get over it. You have ruined our deep and meaningful personal relationship (that exists only on the Internet on a sports forum) forever. Here, in my extreme youth, I have been scarred for life. I shall have nightmares about this moment for the next 70 years. You will bear the guilt of this moment to your grave, if you have enough sensitivity to even begin to grasp what you have done.

To think that I should EVER make a silly comment! Such a thing has never been heard of, especially in response to tominhawaii while discussing trade rumors and trade value!

Your parents would tell you, “Wash out your mouth with soap, young man!” if they knew that you had suggested that I had made a silly comment. You are now a poster child for the case that free speech should be limited.

I shall now depart Blazersedge forever, and find a forum somewhere that will treat me with more kindness and respect.

Silly!

This guy called my comment “silly”!

I simply chose a word that you've used in response to my suggestions, in the past

I guess I didn’t catch the tongue-in-cheek nature of your response to tom. My apologies.

No apologies needed

If I was offended, I’d have just said, “You know, I was only joking” or something. I’m still just having fun. You were right, it was a silly post.

I still think a center is needed, immediately

not to replace Przy, but to help the current team reach the playoffs and compete in the post season

Like I’ve said before, there are “worse” things than having 3 healthy centers on the roster heading into veteran camp next fall…like still having 4 PGs, for instance? Just about every team in the league needs a center, if KP has a “spare” big man he can always make a deal to add another piece to the puzzle, around draft day

not "any" 7 footer

the days when every team had to have a project (aka “stiff”) 7 footer are over. But if a GM has 3 centers who have skills like Przy has, those are rare and valuable. All-star PGs are in the same category

Which reminds me, if the Spurs continue to decline and decide to break up their roster, what would it take to get Tony Parker? I suspect KP wouldn’t get very far in negotiations if he refused to part with Oden, Roy, LMA or Batum. Personally, I’d deal Bayless and Rudy for TP, but I don’t think even that would be “enough” for RC Buford. (And then there’s the small matter of a 8-9 mi gap in salaries to overcome…) This topic should probably be it’s own fanpost

They had Sam Smith on from Chicago

he went around the league but was just speaking in generalities, what teams might be looking to move which players, etc. Nothing more than that

and then hilarity ensued as the guys spent a solid 5 minutes heckling Sam for having the most boring interview ever. They claimed that Wheels and Rice almost fell asleep during it. I rewound and rewatched on CSN, indeed both guys looked to be having trouble keeping their eyes open towards the end. It was pretty funny….

I always forget about courtside, and when I do remember MB and Rice are on the road.

Hope they post it on the site. Great news about Joel. I’d really like to see him and Oden on the bench at the games. I like seeing the whole team together.

Joel is our future at Center

We really do not need a scoring center, we need a big white tough guy to kick ass and grab rebounds!!!!!! We need to lock Joel down this off season to assure we have an actual center and not just a three legged monster with two blown out knees.
