Blazers still wanting Butler?
picked this link up from Ben's twitter. Looks like we are offering Martell for Butler, and throwing in cash. They want Nic or Rudy though.

can you even imagine, batum playing for another team
Awesomeness (ô'səm-nes)

2. n. Nicolas Batum

I used to love Butler
But he appears to be starting the downhill slide. If Martell + SBEC + cash could get it done, I’d be all for it. But I wouldnt throw in Rudy, and Batum isn’t going anywhere…
RUDY > MJ
Trade for Dalembert
yes
Then the entire arena froze as a primal, bloodthirsty shriek echoed through the seats and rafters. Beer vendors dropped their glasses, fans cowered, whistles fell out of refs' mouths, Coach Nate fell backwards into his seat, Monty Williams grew hair, watched it turn grey, and then sobbed as it fell out again all in an instant, and the Suns' blue and orange road uniforms suddenly included a conspicuous amount of yellow. B-Rex had arrived. And he was angry.
I'd want Butler and Haywood
but I still doubt the Blazers would throw in Rudy, like someone reported earlier, the Blazer’s brass has a serious man-crush on Fernandez

butler/haywood for Rudy/martell?
I think you have to do that deal. Personally, since I’m nearly convinced Rudy is going to be traded eventually, I’d prefer it be for our eventual starting point guard, or the third big who can realistically play center for long stretches when needed.
This trade gives us neither (unless Haywood is resigned), but I still think it’s favorable enough to us that you would have to do it. Of course we’d have to throw in a lot more salary, so it’s kind of moot

from a pure talent standpoint, yeah
but like you said KP would have a tough time adding enough salaries to match Butler+Haywood’s contracts
I just don’t see the urgent need to upgrade the SF position, like I wrote elsewhere. Even if Outlaw and Webster were both dealt away for a big man, Nate could “cover” the SF minutes with Batum, Roy and Dante. And typically backup SFs are hiding behind every rock and tree in Europe (Claver) and the D league.

ive been off the need for a SF since before LAST year's trade deadline
this year? it’s fallen so far from my radar of needs, I still am surprised that so many people bring it up. For all the heat KP took last year for not upgrading the 3 spot – which were the only credible targets at the time for RLEC, can you honestly say that he should have trade RLEC and Batum (and more?) for Jefferson or Carter? I was fine with him passing them, and I"m even more fine with him passing now. The other option was Crash of course, but as much as I like him, it’s hard to see how he would fit well in an offense with Miller and Roy as the primary creators.
All that said, if you can get a clear upgrade at the 3 without giving up much (like a Butler for Martell/blake deal), then why not? Seems to be little downside in that

No, my “big deal” last year was RLEC+Travis+Sergio for Hinrich+Deng. Then I had a side order of Frye+Diogo in exchange for Chris Wilcox (ahh, the memories, I’m not making any “blockbuster” proposals yet this year, only Turiaf so far)
KP has talked about acquiring “special fit” players in the past. Perhaps Butler and/or Iggy are on his short list, and he’ll make a “pennies on the dollar” kind of deal for one of them this month. But I hope he’s keeping his focus on big men, especially after watching Utah and L*A mow through the Blazer’s interior defense during the last week

RLEC + Travis + Sergio for Hinrich/Ding
Is there any credible evidence that this was even possible? My dream trade last year was RLEC for LeBron, but that wasn’t a possibility. Hard to fault management for not making a deal that wasn’t even possible.

Quick did have a rumor that was Blake/Outlaw/RLEC for Hinrich/Deng
Or something very similar to that, and I believe it was Chicage that he claimed had made the offer. I was all about it, eventhough Deng was having a down year and looked to be overpaid. Grain of salt though, Quick was the source…
RUDY > MJ
Trade for Dalembert
we also heard
that the Bulls wanted Bayless, but I didn’t put Jerryd or Steve into “my” proposal…I thought that RLEC should’ve been enough for the Bulls to bite

I wasn't faulting management
I was just sayin’ this is what I’d do
12 months ago Hinrich was coming off a wrist injury, Deng was healthy. Blake was out (shoulder) and Chi-town still had Ben Gordon to go along with DRose. The Bulls made a different deadline deal (Salmons, MIller etc) and were in a cost-cutting mode (Deng’s contract, etc)
So I don’t know if this trade was “even possible” but the proposal wasn’t that far out of the realm of distinct possibilities. I know that the trade machine was OK with it
Of course we all know what has happened, since. Deng got hurt. Hinrich had a great playoff series against Boston and Portland lost against Houston and signed Andre Miller. Then later, Travis got hurt. Hindsight is 20/20, but I liked the deal at the time for Portland, and if it had been offered to Chicago I think they would’ve asked for Bayless up front but “settled” for Sergio if KP had held firm

He'd be worth Martell, and then what? Batum rides pine instead of getting work?
This is a lost season, whether folks are ready to admit it or not. We need to keep the youngsters getting minutes, playing at the end of close games and growing. Dumping them for aging vets at this point in the season just doesn’t make sense.
If they have to be traded they’ll have far more value as experienced players than young players who sat on the bench.
well, you gotta figure Butler would provide more consistency than Martell
Consistency wins games. and if nothing else, he could be a valuable contract at the next deadline. I think there will still be plenty of minutes for Batum

I want Batum playing as much as possible regardless if this is a "lost season" or not
why? Because he’s a future star and the best perimeter defender in Portland history…only Pippen and Cliff Robinson are in the same sentence, unless you want to talk about guards like Hollins or TR Dunn

Some say too many SFs - I say not enough!
The summary of these two deals is that we get both Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood; and have a final roster of 4 small forwards worthy of 25+ minutes per game. Thankfully, two of them can play multiple positions:
Miller/ Bayless
Roy/ Webster
Butler/ Batum
Aldridge/ Outlaw
Haywood/ Oden (inj)
We would retain Outlaw and hope that one of Cunningham, Pendergraph, or Freeland develops into the physical presence at backup 4 that many of us have been looking for and would give a different look than Outlaw.
Simple Version of Blake, Przybilla, Fernadez, Howard for Butler, Haywood saves WAS $3M* in salaries this year.
Three Way Version of Blake, Przybilla, Fernadez, Howard for Butler, Haywood saves WAS $5M* in salaries this year.
The salary amount to Washington is important per the quote below:
The Wizards’ desire to move Butler has only increased in recent days, since they found out they will indeed get some cap relief from the NBA this season after losing Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton to suspension for the rest of the season. Washington’s cap number will be reduced almost $4 million, according to sources — pro-rated amounts of the remainder of Arenas’s $16.1 million and Crittenton’s $1.47 million salaries — taking its cap number to a little more than $74 million. The cap threshhold is $69.9 million, meaning Washington could avoid paying tax if it can pare another $4 to $5 million in salaries off its books.

Webster is not a backup SG
so you might as well put Batum’s name behind Roy/ on your depth chart
I’d try to get Webster into that deal, perhaps going to a 3rd team because the Wiz aren’t going to save money accepting Martell. Roy and Butler would both be playing 30-35 mpg, the remainder of the “wing” PT would need to go to Batum
I don’t think Caron Butler’s best days are ahead of him, but I do like Haywood as a center now and a backup to LMA/Greg next fall, if he chooses to resign with Portland in July
I strongly doubt KP will deal Rudy or Joel, in this or any deal. Less than 5% chance
