I'm a partial Saints fan

Just cause of my dad, but I’m going to a party with primarily Saints fans so I might root for the Colts to make things interesting.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Question for those at the Rose Garden last night:

Was the proportion of Laker fans significant? It sounded like Staples north on TV during the second half, not fun to hear (and please, no link to the youtube clip of the dancing “Let’s go Lakers” group on the concourse, it’s already seared in my mind)

compared to other laker games

there wasnt as many laker fans…me and socks noticed some laker fans that were dressed incognito (probably bc they didnt want to be identified as LA fans if they were to lose)…however despite the small numbers they were all pretty loud. there was a bunch of laker fans concentrated behind the laker basket. it was crazy seeing so many in one area.

a team that relies on jump shooting, if they cant hit the shots then the look horrible but if they do they look like contenders.

the only real exception is they have an elite post player while we’re waiting on greg

Greg is a more polished player than Dwight. He was blocking shots at a greater frequency, rebounding at similar total rate with a greater, more valuable ORB%, and was a more polished post scorer.

Stupid foul trouble was the only thing that held him back.

Yes, it looked much smoother than in college or during the Olympics where he was mainly scoring off drives. He still does that, but added a good outside shot to his arsenal. It looked no worse than Jerryd’s or Blake’s shot. And with 19 attempts on 2s and 8.4 on 3s per game over 5 games it’s not a great sample size but looks like more than an accidental hot streak.

by Norsktroll on Feb 7, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

With Nate’s style and if they are ready to let Blake go, I think Koponen fills that void better and ads an ability to defend well on 2 positions while not ruining the offense.

by Norsktroll on Feb 7, 2010 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

He also shot 85% from the line. In the NBA he likely would get worse looks, and we don’t run and gun like Idaho so his small size especially on defense could get more exposed. But I can really start to see the Aaron Brooks in him.

I like it in terms of depth and it’s fair and the Lakers might even do that to add a young guard, but I would hope we could do a little better. The weird thing is his atrocious FG% for any player, much less a big man.

The #6 spot in the Eastern Conference has a win% of .490

The #11 spot in the West has a .520 win% with the East holding a mighty .380 at the #11 spot, and the East has the Nets (.080) to beat up on and inflate their numbers.

hmmm .520 is a 26 & 24 record, .380 is a 19 & 31 record.

Wait…let me put on my ESPN thinking cap……..
Oh yes, I can see clearly now, the East is by far the superior Conference.

the halftime show was so lame. i think they are really trying to cater to their live audience (old corporate types), but it’s destroying any entertainment to the masses watching on tv.

i like the who too.

I don't mind classic rock at halftime

I mean, Tom Petty, Springsteen, and McCartney? No problem. They even fit Prince in there one year and let him get a little bit controversial.

For some reason, the Who just brought boredom with them. The crowd’s singing was as close as it got to interesting.

it’s a problem when they are over the hill and can’t perform like they used to.

Petty really struggled with his performance a lot.

I think they just decided they want to go safe. And I mean, ultra-safe. They had Carrie Underwood sing the anthem, but wouldn’t let her near the halftime show. And she’s about as safe as current artists get.

pizza stone at 550

thinking of getting some quarry tiles though, my pizzas are usually exactly the size of my round stone and that has led to a few problems with overhang. I make my own pizza a lot now, and I can’t really justify buying it anymore, unless it’s somewhere really good.

quarry tiles are a lot cheaper

I bought the biggest stone I could find which was about fourteen inches. Unglazed quarry tiles are 12 × 12 and I could put 4 of those in my oven and get a much larger surface.

No 2 is still the Burj Al Arab also in Dubai. North Korea wants to build a bigger one, but while the 330 meter structure stands it’s still under construction and has been for a long time, and international observers are ridiculing the project.

If you want to build something completely ridiculous, the Arabian Emirates are a good place for that. At least they used to be. A friend of mine got contracted to design a building for a emir that looked like a tea pot and a cup on a saucer. It ultimately did not get constructed. But who knows…

And the whole wedding party (minus my mom but including my mom-in-law (r.i.p.) puffed on a blunt during the reception. Good times. The nineties seem like so long ago now.

How long are you in Orlando for?

There’s some creative stuff you could do if you’re there through the holiday, heck if she’s into the whole Disney thing you could check with the park and see if they could have some of the characters they have walking around hold up a sign you made with an “I love …” message or something while someone films it. One good thing about spending a majority of my life as a broke student is the creative ideas as far as girlfriend gifts flow like water, although when you’re married I’m sure it’s a different deal, lol.

That's funny.

I was definitely a broke student when we were dating and had to do a lot of stuff like this.. even into the first few years of our marriage. Proposed at dawn on the beach (that was actually on Valentine’s day or the day after in 1997!). Second anniversary I put her on a scavenger hunt that she loved.

I’m in Orlando until Wednesday afternoon. Mostly slammed with this conference I am attending, but that is actually a pretty decent idea. If I can make it to Disney, or even near Disney, I will probably do something like that for her and also take a pic there with my Rip City shirt on and send it in for a “Where in the world”-type pic, although Orlando at Disneyworld hardly compares to Ghana or wherever the last one I saw was.

Sometimes money makes it less cool. My wife loved the diamond earring I was able to get her last year for Valentine’s day, but it did feel like the creativity and caring was replaced by the rocks. So it would be good to try and get a little more clever with it this year.

My grandpa died when my dad was 4

He was 60, born in 1897. Fought in World War 1.

My grandma was 40 when my dad was born, and his sister is 20 years older, so I’m starting to think my dad wasn’t necessarily planned for.

I’ve never even seen a picture of my mom’s dad.

Posted this earlier but

What is with the new 48 channel on Direct TV that says Comcast sports and has Blazer games[and Lost and other stuff],it just appeared out of now where the other day with Medford and NO Cal advertizing?

by southern oregon on Feb 7, 2010 10:29 PM PST reply actions

so it appears that if your ISP hasn't "partnered" with NBC Olympics, you can't watch the live online feeds

Meaning you are stuck waiting until 3 hours after some events have happened to watch them in primetime, despite the fact that they are taking place in your timezone.

Since my campus based ISP doesn’t appear to have signed up, I’m outta luck. Looks like I’m going to have to get used to cutting myself off from the world for a 3 hour period every day there’s something I want to watch.

The IOC decides NOT to kick out the Kangaroo

http://www.nbcolympics.com/olympicpulse/blogs/blog=northoftheborder/postid=405995.html#kangaroo+stay+says+ioc

The billboard-sized boxing kangaroo can stay, says the IOC.

You can just hear them now across town: “Aussie…! Oi! Aussie…! Oi!”

And that’s how you know this is going to be a fun Winter Games.

"A big cheer went around our quarters when the word came through that the Boxing Kangaroo could stay," said Australian team Chef De Mission Ian Chesterman.
A view of the controversial Boxing Kangaroo flag displayed by Australian athletes outside their apartments at the Winter Olympic Village in downtown Vancouver on February 6, 2010. The Australian Winter Olympics team was last night has continued to defy a verbal International Olympic Committee request to remove the flag from the athletes’ village in Vancouver. The Boxing Kangaroo flag first became a symbol of Australian sporting teams when it was hoisted by the countries winning America’s Cup yacht crew in 1983.

As athletes, coaches, and fans make the drive in from Vancouver’s airport, many will cross the Cambie Street bridge, which links a southern part of the host city with downtown. The Olympic athlete’s village sits off to the right. You can’t miss it. A two-story tall, green and gold flag ripples with the Australian Olympic team’s most recognizable symbol — a golden kangaroo with big red boxing gloves.

Loving Basketball on Paper so far

Among the take away points so far:

- Systems appear to matter more on D than on O (relative to talent)
- Rebounding is important but not as important as drawing fouls
- Many of the worst offenses in history were characterized by new coaches and turnover with players
- Coaches that like slow tempos often end up in broadcasting (Fratello, Hubie, Collins and of course JVG)

few possessions per game

In general, fast paced teams are slightly above average on offense (on a per possession basis) and slow paced teams are slightly above average on D, but there really isn’t much of a correlation.

Tempo doesn’t really dictate how good or bad you are on either end very much.

Really interesting chapter in BBall on Paper about the hot hand.

Tidbits:
- Darryl Dawkins had a clear anti-streak tendency (he was more likely to make his next shot after a miss than after a make)
- No player on the ‘81 and ’82 Celtics was more likely to make the 2nd FT after making the first FT than he was if he missed the first FT
- However, they did make more 2nd FTs than first FTs overall.
- in 1985 a psychologist did controlled shooting experiments with the Cornell basketball teams (how I managed to not know this until now is beyond me)
- 1 of 26 players showed a streak shooting tendency
- 4 shooters were able to predict the result of their next shot at a statistically significant level
- Oliver in general still thinks the hot hand exists but that teams overreact to the perception of it, or are bad at recognizing it or believe it exists more often than it does, which would explain why nobody’s found evidence of it in data

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
