I'm a partial Saints fan
Just cause of my dad, but I’m going to a party with primarily Saints fans so I might root for the Colts to make things interesting.
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Question for those at the Rose Garden last night:
Was the proportion of Laker fans significant? It sounded like Staples north on TV during the second half, not fun to hear (and please, no link to the youtube clip of the dancing “Let’s go Lakers” group on the concourse, it’s already seared in my mind)

compared to other laker games
there wasnt as many laker fans…me and socks noticed some laker fans that were dressed incognito (probably bc they didnt want to be identified as LA fans if they were to lose)…however despite the small numbers they were all pretty loud. there was a bunch of laker fans concentrated behind the laker basket. it was crazy seeing so many in one area.

And, to answer your question, yes, studio host Tony Luftman will be back soon. He’s taking care of some business with his family, which always comes first, and he’ll be back after the All-Star break. We miss him, but Bob Akamian, who normally produces the show, has done a great job of filling in.

Ray Allen has a career average of 20 ppg.
He’s been to 9 NBA All Star Games, and was a key player in a championship team.
On the other hand, hes a pure shooter, not known as a defender, and before the title run, his teams often missed the playoffs.
Does he go to the Hall of Fame?

He calls Patty “Bong”. That’s the sound an Aborigine’s head makes when you hit him in the head.
Oh sorry, it's Boong
I say we call him that because it’s a term of endearment just like “Rex” is for Bayless.
Umm
Don’t know how your mate put it too you but thats considered a bit of a racial slur in Australia and New Zealand. Used for both Aboriginies in Oz and Maori’s in NZ and the joke is that its how their head sounds when you run them down because there is nothing in there. Pretty offensive to Maori’s I know from some of my friends and I’d say its the same for guys like Patty. Just FYI.

He don’t really call folks that and I wouldn’t call Patty that, but he did edumacate us on it just the same.

I’m parlaying Colts ML with Garcon over 60.5 yards, 4 unit play.
Also going with Colts -5, 2 unit play.

nah, I’m not into gambling. Just trying to see how many units I can end up on the positive side during the playoffs. Currently at 13, I think.

Bush scores a TD
Addai OVER 12.5 rush attempts

Have to agree. Guaranteed contracts need to be reigned in and the luxury tax is becoming too much of a storyline for my liking but trying to use the economy as an excuse to screw the players is a bad idea.

Does anyone like accounting? I think BF1 studies it.
I could take a course with a good professor who is a real expert but a bit condescending, and it’s taking a lot of work and motivation to keep up with the material. It’s not my field of work to keep books, and for managerial purposes I can already read company statements and controlling reports pretty well to see what is the what. So I think I’ll postpone this until the fall.

Powell is solid, but given the fact Bynum and Pau have been dinged up and Mills is about as

has he changed his shot since college?
his college shooting numbers were never that impressive.
Free AK1984
Yes, it looked much smoother than in college or during the Olympics where he was mainly scoring off drives. He still does that, but added a good outside shot to his arsenal. It looked no worse than Jerryd’s or Blake’s shot. And with 19 attempts on 2s and 8.4 on 3s per game over 5 games it’s not a great sample size but looks like more than an accidental hot streak.
I like it in terms of depth and it’s fair and the Lakers might even do that to add a young guard, but I would hope we could do a little better. The weird thing is his atrocious FG% for any player, much less a big man.
Seems that he is a mid-range jump shooter who can also nail the three when given the opportunity. This scouting report is similar to LMA’s.

It’s a bit odd that leading many players back from severe injury is touted as the achievement. That is great and certainly part of it, but avoiding injuries completely or massively reducing their impact should be also part of the evaluation. See Suns.

The #6 spot in the Eastern Conference has a win% of .490
The #11 spot in the West has a .520 win% with the East holding a mighty .380 at the #11 spot, and the East has the Nets (.080) to beat up on and inflate their numbers.

the halftime show was so lame. i think they are really trying to cater to their live audience (old corporate types), but it’s destroying any entertainment to the masses watching on tv.
i like the who too.

I don't mind classic rock at halftime
I mean, Tom Petty, Springsteen, and McCartney? No problem. They even fit Prince in there one year and let him get a little bit controversial.
For some reason, the Who just brought boredom with them. The crowd’s singing was as close as it got to interesting.
it’s a problem when they are over the hill and can’t perform like they used to.

Petty really struggled with his performance a lot.
I think they just decided they want to go safe. And I mean, ultra-safe. They had Carrie Underwood sing the anthem, but wouldn’t let her near the halftime show. And she’s about as safe as current artists get.
i think the biggest non story of the game was the tim tebow commercial

pizza stone at 550
thinking of getting some quarry tiles though, my pizzas are usually exactly the size of my round stone and that has led to a few problems with overhang. I make my own pizza a lot now, and I can’t really justify buying it anymore, unless it’s somewhere really good.

quarry tiles are a lot cheaper

so in the first chapter of basketball on paper, Oliver shows the super detailed log of every possession that he kept for a Bulls-Jazz NBA finals game
He logs every player that touched the ball, who dribbled or passed it past halfcourt, who took the shot and from where, etc.

Damn, this also reminds me that I got to think of something to do for my wife for Valentine’s day. Maybe find something down here in Orlando for her.

How long are you in Orlando for?
There’s some creative stuff you could do if you’re there through the holiday, heck if she’s into the whole Disney thing you could check with the park and see if they could have some of the characters they have walking around hold up a sign you made with an “I love …” message or something while someone films it. One good thing about spending a majority of my life as a broke student is the creative ideas as far as girlfriend gifts flow like water, although when you’re married I’m sure it’s a different deal, lol.

That's funny.
I was definitely a broke student when we were dating and had to do a lot of stuff like this.. even into the first few years of our marriage. Proposed at dawn on the beach (that was actually on Valentine’s day or the day after in 1997!). Second anniversary I put her on a scavenger hunt that she loved.
I’m in Orlando until Wednesday afternoon. Mostly slammed with this conference I am attending, but that is actually a pretty decent idea. If I can make it to Disney, or even near Disney, I will probably do something like that for her and also take a pic there with my Rip City shirt on and send it in for a “Where in the world”-type pic, although Orlando at Disneyworld hardly compares to Ghana or wherever the last one I saw was.
Sometimes money makes it less cool. My wife loved the diamond earring I was able to get her last year for Valentine’s day, but it did feel like the creativity and caring was replaced by the rocks. So it would be good to try and get a little more clever with it this year.

so it appears that if your ISP hasn't "partnered" with NBC Olympics, you can't watch the live online feeds
Meaning you are stuck waiting until 3 hours after some events have happened to watch them in primetime, despite the fact that they are taking place in your timezone.
Since my campus based ISP doesn’t appear to have signed up, I’m outta luck. Looks like I’m going to have to get used to cutting myself off from the world for a 3 hour period every day there’s something I want to watch.
Free AK1984
Yeah
And Comcast has made a big deal about having “remote access to the Olympics” if you have your account name/password.

Also true for ESPN 360 btw.
I’ve logged onto it from the airport before for example.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
You may be good to go as long as they don't check your location.
Also, I don’t think UW is their own cable provider. It’s probably just Comcast or something. If all else fails, you may want to ask them.
I say this because I would get Blazer games if it was comcast, and that would be rad.
#52 #10 #25 #7
Oh that's not a big deal then. Most likely they just want to establish
that you have TV access to all the channels you’ll see online. Cable companies get pretty upset when you show live stuff online to people who don’t actually pay to see that channel.
yeah, it looks like its not an ESPN360 thing.
just annoying if your cable provider isn’t on the list.
Free AK1984
I suspect you could call your cable company and tell them to fix it.
I imagine it’s a nominal fee to the cable company, if any.
And since the ONLY stuff that is streamed
Is that which is NOT on NBC itself, makes sense.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I've railed on ESPN360 enough to cover for this.
I find this stuff incredibly obnoxious. I’m very curious about their definition of
“partnering”.
That's odd
I had no such issues with either Portland State or Comcast during the 2008 Olympics.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah, I was able to watch the online feeds in '08 as well, with my Stanford provider
but I couldn’t find it in the menu this time. Maybe I’ll try to contact Stanford Cable and/or NBC.
Free AK1984
I wonder if it will end up being like ESPN360

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

They have their own backbone, unless they’ve been outsourcing it lately.

Yeah,I have no real idea how to play it
I like to yak with my fingers about live events and if I know what the outcome is it is not as much fun
by southern oregon on Feb 7, 2010 11:19 PM PST up reply actions
yeah, its the events between 5-9 pm pacific that will be delayed until 8-12
So the rule will be no discussing those events until three hours after they happen.

Pst. Other counties stream too. I would suggest Germany or Norway who cover the Olympics door to door and wall to wall, but you might prefer the good ole BBC :-)
Really? Maybe time to look into proxy software. Or cope with weird foreign tongues for events you need to see live.
Not showing a west coast event live to the west coast as it happens is really really lame.

Yay, my My Player guy made the All-Star game
In my second season, Dan James is going to wherever the All-Star game is in 2011.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I’m in my second year, and they double me every time I touch the ball. It’s frustrating. On the bright side, I got a triple double with five minute quarters because it’s easy to pass.

So is Yao
Pass to Yao, Yao lays it in, easy dimes.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
He might be the only guy better to play with than David "Layups" Lee
My PER is down to 65, Lee and Kevin Love have 25 PERs.
#52
I need to try being a point guard. Being a center and having them double me every time I touch it cramps my scorin’ style.
Should I be a Blazer? Hmm. I gotta pick a team.
#52 #10 #25 #7
Hard to make the team as a PG
I did awesome in training camp with the Blazers, way outplayed Dre and Bayless and Blake, had an A+ rating, but they got too many PGs.
#52
how’d you do in summer league? That’s how they determine whether they’ll keep you or not.
#52 #10 #25 #7
I was on someone else's summer league team
Did great, and had my choice of all 29 teams to choose from for training camp. I chose the Blazers, of course.
This was my first guy I made and the file got corrupted… I didn’t try for the Blazers the 2nd time, I chose the Knicks because I figured I could beat out who they had.
#52
I wonder who else has really good bigs. Ooh, I bet the Magic would be a fun team to point guard.
#52 #10 #25 #7
Yeah, they would
Big dunks, lotsa shooters… ya just want someone who can catch a pass and finish. So, not Etan Thomas.
#52
If I have an open lane I take it
I try to move a bit and hit some cutters; if everyone is standing still I call for a pick and roll.
#52
yeah. But they decide if they’ll keep you based on your summer league score and your training camp score. i did the same scenario, with B+ and then A+ in summer league, but A+ both times in training camp, and I was cut the first time and signed the second.
#52 #10 #25 #7
I had an A+ in summer league and training camp both, the first time
I just assumed my 39 or 40 overall rating did me in when they already had Dre/Blake/Bayless.
#52
The Rockets only have 2 PGs on their roster
play well in training camp and you make it.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I made the team after averaging a B+ or an A- in the training camps.
It’s real easy guarding Miller because you can just sag off.
Yeah, I like guarding him and Rodney Stucky
Just back up and let him shoot and he’ll miss. Or, just not shoot.
#52
Yea I was a PG.
I was actually pretty surprised that I made the team considering that I was listed as a probable cut before my last game.
I’m like 46 overall right now and only played like 10 games. Averaging 16 minutes per 20 minute games.
Cool
I haven’t done that yet.
Have to go play the Rookie/Sophmore game now.

It's funny, because I'm in the East
And the first, I dunno, 12 weeks is all Lebron, and then I win.

Any body know how the Winter Olympic TV coverage is going to work?
And what are they going to do if it dont snow?the snow pack is crumbs at 7000 feet here
by southern oregon on Feb 7, 2010 10:48 PM PST reply actions
They are trucking in the snow from out east
This has been done before, in 1998 they had similar worries in Japan that were wiped out by massive snowstorms the days of some events.
Check NBColympics.com and it will ask you enter to enter your zip and then your cable provider. It will give you personalized TV listings for the games.

The IOC decides NOT to kick out the Kangaroo
http://www.nbcolympics.com/olympicpulse/blogs/blog=northoftheborder/postid=405995.html#kangaroo+stay+says+ioc

The billboard-sized boxing kangaroo can stay, says the IOC.
You can just hear them now across town: “Aussie…! Oi! Aussie…! Oi!”
And that’s how you know this is going to be a fun Winter Games.
"A big cheer went around our quarters when the word came through that the Boxing Kangaroo could stay," said Australian team Chef De Mission Ian Chesterman.
A view of the controversial Boxing Kangaroo flag displayed by Australian athletes outside their apartments at the Winter Olympic Village in downtown Vancouver on February 6, 2010. The Australian Winter Olympics team was last night has continued to defy a verbal International Olympic Committee request to remove the flag from the athletes’ village in Vancouver. The Boxing Kangaroo flag first became a symbol of Australian sporting teams when it was hoisted by the countries winning America’s Cup yacht crew in 1983.
As athletes, coaches, and fans make the drive in from Vancouver’s airport, many will cross the Cambie Street bridge, which links a southern part of the host city with downtown. The Olympic athlete’s village sits off to the right. You can’t miss it. A two-story tall, green and gold flag ripples with the Australian Olympic team’s most recognizable symbol — a golden kangaroo with big red boxing gloves.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Any one who finds that flag offensive is just to PC sensitive for me
by southern oregon on Feb 7, 2010 10:53 PM PST up reply actions
It was some issue with comercialization
The IOC hates other sponsors. For example, GM Place, the Canucks arena, is officially “Canada Hockey Place” during the games.

Loving Basketball on Paper so far
Among the take away points so far:
- Systems appear to matter more on D than on O (relative to talent)
- Rebounding is important but not as important as drawing fouls
- Many of the worst offenses in history were characterized by new coaches and turnover with players
- Coaches that like slow tempos often end up in broadcasting (Fratello, Hubie, Collins and of course JVG)

few possessions per game
In general, fast paced teams are slightly above average on offense (on a per possession basis) and slow paced teams are slightly above average on D, but there really isn’t much of a correlation.
Tempo doesn’t really dictate how good or bad you are on either end very much.
Free AK1984
The concept of a system on D being more important makes sense to me
A lot of players can put the ball in the hoop with their eyes closed. It takes a lot of effort to actually shut people down.

Depends if you can re-use some of the same skills. They tried making Olympic hurdle sprinters into football wide receivers, with mixed success. Simmons always has the theory that NBA athletes would be great in soccer or handball. Some people are naturally good at various sports due to their balance, hand-eye coordination, etc. I had a friend in school who really was good at about everything: Soccer, tennis, handball, basketball, skiing, swimming, … Unfortunately to the detriment of a pro career he was about 5-6.
i do know that roy said if he didn’t go into the nba he’d like to be a receiver or something & also my friend told me kobe is really good at soccer. so i don’t doubt it but i wouldn’t say most.

Steve Nash...
…is a magician with a soccer ball. Seriously, the guy looks like a white Pele’. Saw him play at a fun-raiser. Don’t know if he’d be Beckham out there, but I’m guessing he could make a pro soccer roster at the very least. He also does some of this stuff pre-game with a basketball dribbling with his feet and hands that is pretty crazy.
i can totally picture him as a soccer player
i thought david beckham wasn’t really that good? just the hottest guy alive, for sure.

Coleman was the #1 pick in the 1980 draft and apparently consistently made his teams way worse on defense
Free AK1984
oops the 1990 draft my bad
played for NJ, Philly, Charlotte and Detroit.
I remember the end of his career, but not the prime of it, at least not very well.
Free AK1984
Yes. He had pretty great skills, but didn't try hard enough to make something out of them.
People feared Beasley might turn out like him in the last draft. Coleman has become more of a success as an entrepreneur in a rundown area of Detroit after his career.
between 1999 and 2001 the Hornets were 74-80 with him and 54-20 without him, and most of it was explained by D
I knew he was considered “squandered potential,” never realized he was quite that much of a sieve.
Free AK1984
i remember he was an egocentric jerk...
…and a perrennial loser who despite his immense talent could never lead a team to the big game.
Really interesting chapter in BBall on Paper about the hot hand.
Tidbits:
- Darryl Dawkins had a clear anti-streak tendency (he was more likely to make his next shot after a miss than after a make)
- No player on the ‘81 and ’82 Celtics was more likely to make the 2nd FT after making the first FT than he was if he missed the first FT
- However, they did make more 2nd FTs than first FTs overall.
- in 1985 a psychologist did controlled shooting experiments with the Cornell basketball teams (how I managed to not know this until now is beyond me)
- 1 of 26 players showed a streak shooting tendency
- 4 shooters were able to predict the result of their next shot at a statistically significant level
- Oliver in general still thinks the hot hand exists but that teams overreact to the perception of it, or are bad at recognizing it or believe it exists more often than it does, which would explain why nobody’s found evidence of it in data
Free AK1984
wow that's pretty facinating
