Chris Thomasson of NBA Fanhouse reports that Team USA is set to announce this week a list of 25-28 players who will compete for roster spots during the 2010 Worlds and 2012 Olympics.

LaMarcus Aldridge is expected to make this list while Thomasson writes about Brandon Roy...
------------------------------------
One name that won't be on the list is Portland guard Brandon Roy. Sources said, after discussions that included Roy, it has been thought best Roy not play during upcoming summers due to possible wear and tear on his knees. Roy underwent knee surgery before last season, and his health has remained a concern.

Minor knee surgery

No big deal.

The surgery

was before the 08 season. Roy took the past summer relatively easy and his hamstring is still messed up so its not very smart to commit summers to Team USA

My view on Roy and the Olympics

Is once he wins a title, I’m cool with him participating.

Yup after his second year

Remember that he kind of got shut down early his first two years.

I don't remember knee surgery either.

I was just reading The Book of Basketball and I got to a part talking about what could be if the Blazers had Chris Paul:“Supposedly Roy’s knee ligaments are made out of pages 41 and 42 of this book.” First I’d heard.

Saving face

Considering Wade played after missing most of the preceeding season the reaon given seems pretty bogus.
This seems more of a PR reason given to hide truth.(Remember when half the chosen ones bailed on going to Greece because of security worries? Coach Brown announced one player wasn’t going because he was going to get married-which was news to both the player and his girlfriend!)

Possible reasons:
The Blazers don’t want Roy to go,preferring he gets fully healthy.
Roy doesn’t really want to go,either to get healthy or he’d rather spend the summer w/his family.
(Conspiracy alert!) NIke and Stern want the team to be all about LeBron.
Numbers game. A 12 man roster imposes limits and a team similar to last yrs w/3 PGs,4 bigs,LeBron,Carmelo and now Durant only has 2 spots left. One has to be for a 3pt shooter and one should be for a defensive player, neither of which is Roy’s calling card.
Payback/loyalty. Durant went to camp last yr,Roy didn’t.
And two rather unlikely but very disturbing possibilities:
Roy DOES have serious knee issues the team has kept quiet.(Did the talk of Roy’s health during contract negotiations ripple thru Colangelo and Co.)
Did the early season create an impression that Roy doesn’t play well w/others? That he’s not going to be able to blend in on Team USA?

Me,I think Roy,while appreciating the honor of being a candidate, doesn’t really want to go,and the Blazers definitely don’t want him going. On Team USA’s part,I believe they view him as an emergency injury replacement, not as someone they really want on the team.

hmmm...

I wonder if there is any lingering resentment about Roy not standing/participating during the National Anthem.

Not saying there is… but we are talking about Team USA here.

no, but

there was talk this summer about Roy not showing up in Vegas for team USA workouts and how that could affect his standing on future Olympic teams. Roy said he would be thrilled to represent his country in the games but that the timing had always been “wrong” for him to join in the workouts during the summers. I’d rather he get his rest during the offseason, but I’d say the same thing about Rudy and Nic, as well. LMA is going to wind up playing a lot of minutes this year, and he’s had trouble with his ankles and a knee bruise. The Olympics are 2+ years off, and I know the US team wants the kids to play a lot together before then, but as Blazer fans it’s hard to get excited abut "loaning"our young players to the “cause” and then perhaps watch them suffer stress-related injuries to their joints or bones during the NBA season

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Well, at least one blazer will be on team USA.

Maybe I’ll watch the Olympics then….
