Oddly enough

I don’t have time to listen to music as much as I used to. But when I do I’m pretty eclectic. I mean, I like Fleetwood Mac and ABBA both. You can’t get much more diverse than that!

I wouldn’t call Fleetwood Mac and ABBA diverse (unless that was sarcasm, in which case I salute you). Now if you said ABBA and The Misfits and NAS, then I might say diverse.

Dave, with how much Batum is contributing

whether he is scoring or not, and taking more and more playing time away from Martell, do you see Martell still in Portland next year, given that he has a reasonably movable contract?

I would say he's one of the more likely guys

to be offered and/or packaged. Doesn’t mean they’ll find a match. But yeah, he’s a chip Portland can put on the table.

It's hard to say

because it depends on what other teams want and can give Portland. Nobody’s for sure on the block but you have Martell as a possibility, Camby and Przybilla can’t both stay, I don’t know if you can find space for Rudy and Bayless but then again you can’t afford to trade either without serious return. It’ll be an interesting summer.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

Camby and Przybilla can’t both stay

KP said Blazer’s the front office likes to keep the guys who they’ve worked so hard to target and acquire, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Marcus gets a competitive FA offer from Portland in July. But it certainly would be easier to make Camby “fit” into a big man rotation if either he, Joel or Oden could ever make an open jump shot

Camby has that shot

It’s just rusty. Camby can do something we haven’t seen around here in years: play the high post. I wish we had Sabonis back. He’d open up a lot of offense with that key-top post position.

Hey Dave,

Nic’s stat line was virtually all assisted and all within the flow of the offense. Is this encouraging or discouraging? e.g. he still doesn’t seem to be able to take over a game.

Come on you gotta listen unto me,

by HurraKane212 on Feb 28, 2010 9:35 PM PST reply actions

He doesn't need to "take over a game"

1. We have Brandon for that.

2. This idea that an individual should take the ball and do it all seems kind of anti-basketball. Look at the Magic Lakers, the new or old Celtics, the Spurs — they’re teams and they share the ball. If the Blazers play as a team and Nic is effective in so many ways, what’s the problem.

That’s what I think, at least. I hate the 1-on-5 nature of NBA stardom.

by Kaboomm on Feb 28, 2010 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

yes, but

when opposing defenses key in on Roy, Batum as a playmaker would be very helpful.

Come on you gotta listen unto me,

by HurraKane212 on Feb 28, 2010 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

if Batum's man leaves him to double Brandon

and the ball is swung to Nic, he can do several things with it. Make the open jumper. Pump fake and sidestep a defender and make a jumper off the dribble. Take the ball all the way to the hole. He can also pass the ball off the dribble, and I expect he’ll get even better at that as he gains experience and confidence

Batum can “make plays” from the wing, and he’s not a turnover threat. If he’s fouled he can knock down FTs. I’d say that makes him an extremely valuable “outlet” for Roy when the defense tries to trap Brandon and force him to give up the ball

by two4larue on Feb 28, 2010 11:20 PM PST up reply actions

True, True, True

BRoy is no dummy, he endorsed Nic in his first season. I thought it was for Nic, but it was for him to have a bail out Valve. and somebody that can take defensive pressure off himself.

by BBK on Mar 1, 2010 5:26 AM PST up reply actions

You don't want Nic to take over a game

That’s his value: being able to come through huge without bogarting Roy’s or Aldridge’s touches or disrupting their flow. That’s what differentiates him from, say, where Jerryd Bayless is right now.

This year

We get beat in the playoffs. Next year the offense is hopefully more settled and the interior pressure created by Oden is enough to free Nic or Martell for a ton of open looks.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

Interested why you didn't include Rudy for a ton of open looks...?

And if open looks are what you expect who is preferable between Martell and Nic?

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

I would say this.

Francisco Garcia is closer to Pippen than Batum.

Batum is a guy who plays well off other playmakers. He gets open shots and plays off the ball well. While his ball handling is adequate, he has not shown he is capable of making plays with the ball. Or rather, he has not been given the opportunity. But there’s not much evidence that demonstrates Batum can be a guy who runs the pick and roll or take his man off the dribble.

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

Batum is not aggressive enough to the rim.

He probably feels more comfortably against Euro competition than physical NBA defense. He reminds of me when Blake runs the pick and pop/roll, he wants just enough attention to pass the ball to someone else.

I dunno, he ran the break beautifully last night and has exhibited pretty good playmaking ability. He can’t isolate, obviously.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

Last night was just a hot shooting night against one of the worst teams in the NBA.

I wouldn’t take much from it. Batum does a good job of keep his head up and looking for others. But I mainly attribute last night to terrible defense and hot shooting.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 28, 2010 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

he ran three fastbreaks where he delivered the bounce pass to the big at the right time. Regardless of the defense, which was much of the reason he shot well, he seems to lead the break better than every Blazer but Andre and Greg.

He is not Pippen, at all. I give you that. Pippen was one of the best players of all time, and my personal favorite. But Nic does have nice playmaking, a good shooting stroke, and is a pretty smart basketball player, and I have more faith in him developing his game than Bayless, Rudy, Martell…

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, I agree

He runs the fastbreak well. Occasionally he defers too much on the break, but he finished well last night. Batum has a higher ceiling than any other role player on the Blazers.

I think Batum will be a guy that will make Defenses stay honest

and D up the best opposing wing every night.

I think he’ll be like a swiss army knife, a little passing, a little rebounding, a little scoring, a block or two, a steal or two, etc etc. I would be ecstatic if he averaged 12pts/7reb/3ast/1.5stl/1.5blk

Both have their advantages

If more people played like they did in the Paxson days then Rudy would excel more. I think the Blazers need to get back to that eventually. But when you do look back you see that the guys weren’t always as sharp overall as these guys, nor were they near as athletic. I’d love to see a mix.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

But when you do look back you see that the guys weren’t always as sharp overall as these guys

This is true. There were a lot of quick shots and wasted possessions (even during the post season) that, if they were repeated in today’s game, the “star” players would be immediatey pulled out of the game. There also seemed to be less in-game play-calling and more free-wheeling, where the NBA game nowadays is all about ball control (ISO and PnRs help prevent turnovers, etc)

Oden was very effective, but he is still raw. A little better form and footwork to go with his natural touch and he’ll be very good. I think he needs to utilize a bank shot instead of a direct hook.

Very raw

Long ways to go from where he’ll eventually be, but still was more effective as a guy to run offense through than LMA. Much, much better passing and got to the line more.

Aside from the obvious injury concerns about whether Oden will be there for us, he seems a much better choice to go to for offense than LMA.

I think Rudy and Nic

could have some great synergy. I could see them both fitting with Brandon too. All of them are basically unselfish. If Rudy could defend a point guard I would already be saying you could get rid of everybody else. I think if our frontcourt with Oden and perhaps more doses of Cunningham develops into a massive defensive force maybe you can afford a non-PG-defender on the court with Roy. If so, I think that’s Rudy. Otherwise you really have to look at Bayless instead, provding you’re limiting yourself to current Blazers.

Nice analogy Dave.

I would agree with you. The numbers fudge a bit on how Oden scores off putbacks and interior passes. I don’t imagine his post play getting the same efficiency.

I agree.

If you put Oden in the same position as Aldridge, gave him the same number of touches, and asked him to create, you’d see totally different numbers. Oden is efficient because he doesn’t necessarily take the same risks that Aldridge takes. And if Oden were to handle the ball more, he wouldn’t necessarily be as efficient as he was this season.

Batum is similar to Oden, in that when his usage goes up, his numbers go up.

It doesn’t necessarily mean he is efficient in the post. Various circumstances can account for Oden’s offensive efficiency, not attributed to his post play.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 28, 2010 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

the baseline usage for Oden was 18, when we were just letting him o-reeb for the first part of his season. His usage jumped to 22 or 23 when we added post touches, and his efficiency, in turn, grew. His offensive rebound rate was the same, so he wasn’t getting more touches there.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 10:19 PM PST up reply actions

I just dont' think the data accounts for Oden's efficiency accurately in the post

Oden’s usage is relatively low in absolute terms due to his constant foul trouble. Any jump in usage rate is exaggerated in the data because of how it calculates efficiency. A 4 point to 8 point increase on the same number of shot is 50%. In absolute terms, not particularly significant. But in efficiency terms, a monster jump.

The usage rate can also be externally manipulated by the coach. When Oden is having a good game, he gets his touches and minutes. While a bad game with foul trouble, he’ll play fewer minutes and less touches. There’s a inherent bias with Oden’s offensive efficiency stats. I wouldn’t trust them.

I do think he will be a better post option in the future. I don’t think he is as good as the data.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 28, 2010 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

well, the data suggest he’s one of the best post players in the league. Obviously, we understand he’s nowhere close to that. But compared to the very inefficient Aldridge?

LMA's willingness and preference for playing away from the block will help there

Hopefully he’s able to work on his passing into the post so we can get something resembling a high-low game between the two.

by Mortimer on Feb 28, 2010 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

as the season went on, his usage went up. His efficiency also went up. It’s a debate as to whether they are correlated.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'll let one of the stat guys argue the numbers

But I felt he was quite a bit more effective than LMA on the block, both dealing with double teams, passing out of it to the open man, and scoring from the post.

Putbacks and easy dunks may make the numbers look even better than they do, but as his usage went up, so did his numbers.

Time will tell one way or another… it was too short of a season for Oden.

by Mortimer on Feb 28, 2010 10:13 PM PST up reply actions

The reason it has been reactionary

is the lack of a consistent center. When you see Oden stable you’ll also see the perimeter guys taking more chances. This will open up the games of Rudy, Bayless, Miller (if he’s still around) on that end.

Mostly in knowing

where they weren’t prepared before. I think there will be some serious offensive soul-searching trying to get Oden, LMA, and Roy together. That needs to be all over the Blazers’ drawing board this summer. Also you’ll have a better idea of what moves might or might not need to be made.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions

I think the coaching staff needs to pull Andre into the discussion

Miller was the only guard getting the ball in to Greg early on where he could do damage, and Oden was also feeding ‘Dre on back-door cuts. The two had great synergy even though they hadn’t played together for very long

Those two have gotta find a way to pull Roy, LMA and Batum into the collective. Miller has more time with the coaching staff and (without Blake to “fall back on”) they’ve got to let #24 run the show and make the reads. Andre shouldn’t have to shoot the ball any further out than 5 feet to be effective, but when the plays have broken down he’s had to

Hey Dave, it seems everyone is saying one of our Blazers will be a rotation player.

What do you see the rotation being like next season assuming everyone is healthy and we keep the team the way it is (although that’s obviously a big if)

For example, people keep mentioning guys like Cunningham and Pendergraph as the ideal rotation players, but I don’t see how they’ll get minutes even if we didn’t have Camby or Howard.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

What about the center situation?

Do you think we’ll keep Camby past this year? Would we keep Joel past next year? Does Joel’s option make it impossible to keep Camby? I’d probably be happy with either one, though it seems like their contracts totally conflict with each other.

by Kaboomm on Feb 28, 2010 10:08 PM PST reply actions

I think Camby walks, period

I don’t think we get a realistic chance to keep him. However two scenarios are possible, both of which I’ll discuss more at length later.

1. Camby agrees to let us sign-and-trade him.

2. We package Joel along with somebody else for a player, likely a point guard, and re-sign Camby.

It’s a matter of how much Nic gives WITHOUT being the #1 guy. Can Nic carry a team like a Kobe or Brandon? No. I’m not sure he can even be #2 like Pippen, to tell you the truth. But he’s going to be one of the best complementary players in the league: defense, double-digit scoring, shooting, smarts, grace, hops. The best way to put it is that his ceiling is contributing hugely to several championships if paired with the right stars.

I am going to give you the best advice ever

pre-paid debit cards and separate accounts along side a budget you both agree on.

Pre-paid debit cards are loaded every week with the budgeted amount, you can’t overdraft them. You get e-mailed every transaction w/the amount updated and get an e-mail every AM with the amount you have that day. My wife and I each have a pre-paid debit card that is connected to our bills and budget account, we use it for food, house items, gas, etc. Most of our bills are auto-debited, and we have separate accounts for extra-budgetary purchases.
Trust me, just because you love each other, doesn’t mean you should put the accounts together…

I think the Blazers lack of:

1.- Flow. Maybe because the´re coached to play as effective as possible (called plays, most isos, etc), maybe because they lack of a second PG, maybe both.
2.- Killer instinct. I hope the next time we´re winning by 30 we´ll heard someone saying “No mercy, No mercy”

What do you think?

Yup to both

But #1 can be explained by the youth (heretofore) and shifting lineups (past and present) of this team as much as anything. I mean, they never were going to look like a veteran team. It’s just worse this year because of injuries. #2 worries me. These guys still seem like they come to games in suits and ties instead of ready to take someone’s head off.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

Both seem clear to me as well

I hope both can improve.

We do seem complacent with leads some games, even though leads are made to evaporate and that happens a lot… we’re not a team that has an aggressive killer instinct overall, a team that can intimidate. I wish we intimidated a lot more.

Is that why they look better on D?

I just heard they have only lost something like 3 games to injury all year. That consistency might be helping them develop better help and confidence and aggression because they can trust other guys will be there. Just a thought.

by tssbro on Feb 28, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

They generally have the opposite approach to Defense as us. I’m not saying their D is better because of their approach but their general mentality might be more aggressive for it. Then again if we have Greg and Joel, we would be complaining more about being called for fouls than we are now. I guess I just like attacking more than defending when it comes to team sports.

I have always thought the Blazers struggled on D

because they haven’t really had a full year with their rosters. Last year they struggled early but got stronger as the year went on and the four rookies got acclimated and the other guys got used to the new guys. This year there has been almost no consistency to develop any kind of trust on D. Maybe we will see what kind of defense they can put on the floor with a full season with Oden, Aldridge, Batum, Roy and Miller next year.

Cunningham is the new Jerome Kersey

Batum is the new Batum. That doesn’t mean he’s better or worse than Jerome. Kersey was far more of an imposing physical presence than Nic.

Dante is so far ahead of where Jerome was fundamentally, as a rookie

but their college background had a lot to do with that (Longwood vs ’Nova)

Nic pulls off those run-‘em-down-from-behind blocks that compare with Kersey’s hustle, but that’s where the comparison ends.

I thought Travis compared to Jerome at first, they were both raw as rookies but then developed in different ways. Same uniform # too

Batum already shoots better than Kersey

But Kersey had a little bit of a crazy streak that those clubs needed from time to time. Nic doesn’t have that, but at least he lets Pau Gasol know how many times he’s dunked on him.

Late game execution.

The Blazers seem to rely on isolation plays in the 4th quarter. Why don’t they run guard screens to get mismatches for Roy like many other teams do for their superstars like Pierce, Lebron, Wade, and Carmelo.

Is our offensive system doom to fail in the 4th quarter since it heavily relies on timing and any pressure defense can disrupt it?

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Feb 28, 2010 10:50 PM PST reply actions

Screens can be helpful

but sometimes they also bring another defender into the picture when you didn’t want one. Now…if I’m the opponent and either Oden or Aldridge sets a screen for Roy in a critical situation I ponder how comfortable either of those big men are catching the ball on the move and scoring versus what Roy is likely to do. I also figure there’s about a 250,000% chance I would have double-teamed Roy anyway. So I just send both defenders after Brandon. All you did with your screen was make it easier. It’d probably be better for Roy to get up an iso shot that Oden can try and rebound (which he couldn’t do if he was screening) or, if the double comes, make it come from farther away so he can get a pass to the open man. If they’re stupid enough to double with LMA’s man I just get the ball to him and let him shoot the jumper.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

I’m beginning to think the value in LMA’s midrange shooting is his ability to exploit shorter defenders with it. We can use him for more of a matchup than anything.

he needs the ball to be an effective player. I see that as a potential issue down the road, along with his lack of tenacity on defense and somewhat inefficient offense.

But make Dante your centerpiece on offense and see what he does...

He plays an entirely different role in the offense and only shoots when he is pretty much wide open. LA is called upon to make things happen both inside and out.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Feb 28, 2010 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

the vast majority of Dante’s and LMA’s long 2s are off the same pick and pop where the defense doubles the ballhandler.

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

My point is that they have vastly different roles in the offense

I am probably taking what you are saying too far. I don’t have a breakdown but I would think that LA’s shots are contested more often.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Feb 28, 2010 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

I think a lot of his longer shots are conceded by the defense. He definitely has a better touch around the basket, that’s not an argument.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 28, 2010 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

I am going strictly by memory and feel...

but even if conceded LA usually has a hand in the face or someone near him. Dante benefits by being the guy people leave to go double team. I don’t think anyone is near him when he shoots. But that will change if he keeps hitting and makes it into the other teams scouting reports.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Feb 28, 2010 11:25 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like the most common defensive strategy against Roy and LMA is to double Roy off the pick and leave LMA for the open 20 foot jumper. LMA occasionally shoots something contested, but most of his long looks, I would bet, are off the pick and pop.

#52 #10 #7

He was struggling early on

I think he can be a good mid-range shooter. I don’t think his game is going to change substantially so we’re going to have to decide whether we can live with a face-up PF or not.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

In the long run

Provided Oden is healthy and is who we think he is, I think a low-usage better defending/rebounding would be a better fit, even if we lose LMA’s offensive ability.

Another thing where time will tell. Maybe over the long haul, Oden and LMA can bring the best out of each other.

OK, a serious question.

Dave, what are the chances our guys ever learn to deal with a screen? Both on and off the ball. In my eyes it is our single biggest weakness on the defensive end for the last few seasons.

by GustyJ on Feb 28, 2010 11:02 PM PST up reply actions

But honestly, it's not just us

I see very few teams defend a screen well. The most success I see teams having is when they have a defender who can aggressively attack the ballhandler after the screen is set, making it harder for him to make a play. But most defenders in that situation are post guys who aren’t quick enough, so they back off allowing for the ballhandler to have more room to make a play. Kevin Garnett is probably the best example of a guy who can pull that kind of defense off.

Yup

People talk about all kinds of reasons to fire a coach that don’t make sense to me. But this is one that rankles me. We have to either teach these guys to deal with a simple screen or get players who can switch and still cover. I mean, we’re not the only team switching on screens but we’re pretty bad at it. One thing I do like about Miller’s defense is that he occasionally works really hard to fight through a screen late in the game. I bless him for that every time.

To me, it comes down to coaching.

McMillan doesn’t seem to have a problem with it. That’s unfortunate. LMA should be the guy who’s active and hustling on defense. He has great length and foot speed to be very effective. McMillan just isn’t keen on teaching him to play that way on defense.

Pelton had a great theory on the Wingcast. Is Jerryd Bayless taking an unusual poinding these days?

Seems like the refs have just decided that hitting Bayless is not a foul anymore, and opposing teams are clobbering him without paying any price. I don’t know how he gets out of that box unless he somehow becomes an all-star and gets a sacred aura around him. It’s starting to piss me off. I’m not wearing rose-colored glasses about his game, but at least he should be treated evenhandedly.

by Kaboomm on Feb 28, 2010 11:13 PM PST reply actions

Jerryd has developed a tendency

What are your thoughts about Oden’s upcoming extension? —B

They’ll argue back and forth with his agent about how much he’s worth but they’ll keep him. If that takes a big offer they’ll do it. But KP has been pretty good at getting value out of his continuing contracts. I think they’ll come to a deal without too much fuss. In the face of the injuries his market value isn’t near max-level.

by blacknoiseNW on Feb 28, 2010 11:42 PM PST up reply actions

how would someone have called his bluff? Rondo’s from teh same class LMA is.

LMA is less productive than Landry, Lee, Millsap as a starter, and arguably Varejao, because Andy is a beast on the boards and defensively.

Rondo had baggage. If that wasn't a real card, it woulda been called

that’s because “value added” is tied to playing time.

#52 #10 #7

and no PF ranked ahead of LMA has played less

but they are paid more. The question is whether LMA has a fair contract. Clearly, he does. Using players like Landry and Love for comparison doesn’t work because those players are still on rookie contracts.

Millsap did get a 2nd contract – but his production doesn’t match LMA’s.

by blacknoiseNW on Feb 28, 2010 11:58 PM PST up reply actions

but you were wrong about their production

Lee, Landry, Millsap and Varejao are all inferior to LMA in VA or EWA, and none of them have any injury excuses (although Landry is close).

I forgot that Landry is a 2nd rounder and has had a new contract. However, that is is a special case and he will get his.

by blacknoiseNW on Mar 1, 2010 12:05 AM PST up reply actions

are we measuring production based completely on one very flawed metric? Especially considering LMA is a scorer, Millsap a rebounder, and Varejao a defender?

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Mar 1, 2010 12:06 AM PST up reply actions

I don’t mean to be argumentative, sorry if that’s how it came across. I just find it a little hard to compare apples and oranges with one very rudimentary statistical metric.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Mar 1, 2010 12:09 AM PST up reply actions

AV isn't rudimentary

for sake of comparison, it is a very nice composite stat readily available. The point is that LMA’s contract is just fine.

VA: Value Added – the estimated number of points a player adds to a team’s season total above what a ‘replacement player’ (for instance, the 12th man on the roster) would produce. Value Added = ([Minutes * (PER – PRL)] / 67). PRL (Position Replacement Level) = 11.5 for power forwards, 11.0 for point guards, 10.6 for centers, 10.5 for shooting guards and small forwards

by blacknoiseNW on Mar 1, 2010 12:12 AM PST up reply actions

value added is just PER * playing time.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Mar 1, 2010 12:15 AM PST up reply actions

LMA is the complete package

so cherry picking one skill from several different players and combining them all to discredit LMA is flawed logic.

Varejao is not better than LMA. Millsap is not better than LMA. The stats don’t lie, even if you want to focus on on particular metric from different players to make your case, rather than the complete picture.

BTW, I was wrong about Lee in terms of production: he is higher than LMA, but at the center position. That caused me to overlook his offensive numbers. Still, LMA is a much better defender than Lee.

by blacknoiseNW on Mar 1, 2010 12:10 AM PST up reply actions

I feel like we’re making a lot of blanket statements here. How is LMA a complete package? He doesn’t block shots, rebound, or draw fouls.

Millsap, as a starter, was all-star quality and more productive. Varejao is a tremendous defender, and that isn’t shown by PER. Landry is one of the most efficient scorers in basketball.

Landry has a higher PER. All Value Added is essentially PER * playing time, and Landry hasn’t gotten as many minutes due to congestion.

Millsap, as a starter, was a ridiculous rebounder scorer with had a high TS% and a great rebound rate.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Mar 1, 2010 12:14 AM PST up reply actions

How does any of that make LMA not worth his contract?

But don’t knock VA because it say’s LMA’s contract is fair. Wins are measured in production.

You can value Varejao more than LMA all you want – but that doesn’t make LMA’s contract bad. Nor does it make LMA bad.

The truth is, LMA is a much more productive player than Verajao, slightly (very slightly) more productive than Landy, but the true comparisons are to his peers in terms of contract.

Is Love eligible for a raise?

Ask that question when he is eligible for an extension. However, based on last game head to head – the answer is “everything”.

by blacknoiseNW on Feb 28, 2010 11:43 PM PST up reply actions

Love is a better passer, scorer, shooter, and rebounder.

Are we really going to make an argument based off last night’s game? That is a perilously small sample.

Love is a good player

and when he is eligible for a raise – will probably make more than LMA. However, I’d still take LMA over Love, right now. LMA plays defense (in spite of popular opinion).

by blacknoiseNW on Feb 28, 2010 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

Not that different, I'm guessing

Skilled big men with good attitudes get a lot of money from someone. Every team that wanted Bosh and didn’t get him would bid on LaMarcus.

He would probably be behind Bosh, Amare, and Boozer.

by Starvin' Marvin on Feb 28, 2010 11:32 PM PST up reply actions

the max other teams can offer isn’t the max we can offer, it’s less. If someone else wants to offer him that, it’s probably because he stayed healthy and rocked, in which case we’d be fine matching.

Considering his improvement seemingly game to game

if he stays healthy next year, there probably will be some teams that would want to throw max offers Greg’s way. but, it’s a fairly big “if”

Mills is not ready

Bayless has worked for a couple years now to get to this position. Patty would have to be playing amazing, let’s-give-up-on-Jerryd-right-now basketball in order to get that second PG spot. Mills will have to learn the offense better plus hit those jumpers before he can get in regularly.

He’s highly regarded still for his potential if nothing else. The only caveat here is the economic situation and impending CBA. That may lower contracts overall.

Hi Dave.

I hesitate to ask this but here goes. What is the criteria for being re-instated after banishment? If someone is banished permanently what are the likely reasons and do you ever reconsider?

#52

by annthefan on Feb 28, 2010 11:41 PM PST reply actions

Sure

Everyone (well, almost everyone) gets at least a second chance. The reasons for banning are always violating site guidelines, which amounts to making it an uncomfortable place for people to discuss the Blazers. Most violations merit warning before banning so people know what’s up. Reinstatement in most cases takes only asking and if the person gets along well enough after that no further attention is paid to them. The worse your offense or the more we’ve had to warn/ban you the longer it takes to get back. It’s mostly a matter of time. Even with mods, none of us has the time to babysit constantly. We can either trust you to take care of the place and its members or we can’t. If we can’t, we can’t have you around.

Indeed

We don’t discuss specifics of modding but in general bringing attention doesn’t hasten anything, if nothing else because it then would engender copycats.

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

It's gotta be up to that person to come back.

No one can do it for him, and you can’t “bring someone back” because of any sort of outcry. The rules of the place have to be followed.

That’s me speaking as a non-mod, non-runner of the site. It makes sense to me.

Dave

I haven’t heard much about Dre and Brandon’s on-court chemistry issue lately, thank goodness. I guessing injuries and trades quiet the issue or even resolve it.

But let me ask you, what do you think of the Miller-Roy backcourt since Brandon’s return? Still to early to tell, 60 games in? Are they finally meshing? Can it be as effective as we hoped? Can they play effective defense together?

The 2012-13 NBA season: a dynasty begins.

by OVERTIME on Feb 28, 2010 11:43 PM PST reply actions

I think they've started to work it out

Neither one has to dominate all the time. They trade off — when the defense is collapsing on Roy, then Miller takes advantage for a little while and suddenly the defense has to back off him again. Three plays for Roy, two plays for Miller, pass to LMA a couple times, pass out to the perimeter a couple of times, and then repeat.

by Kaboomm on Feb 28, 2010 11:48 PM PST up reply actions

They're getting along better offensively

Although it’s still an either-or arrangement. Andre just seems more comfortable with the “or” and Brandon is still hobbled enough to not need much “either”. The defense is and will continute to be a problem. But how do you solve it? Where’s that magical point guard defender who can hit a shot but doesn’t need to score in order to feel justified and also doesn’t mind letting Roy take over whenever he wants but is still capable of coming through when Roy doesn’t?

by Dave on Feb 28, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Could be Bayless

But

“but doesn’t need to score in order to feel justified and also doesn’t mind letting Roy take over whenever he wants”

Sound like Jerryd?

by OVERTIME on Mar 1, 2010 12:02 AM PST up reply actions

Do you think that the starting lineup

could ever be Roy, Rudy, Batum, LmA, Oden? I feel like Nic Rudy and Roy could share ballhandling duties well enough and it would free up longterm pt for rudy instead of keeping hum stuck with the second unit.

Rudy has to improve his ballhandling ability quite a bit

And that’s ignoring his problems he’d have against quick or physical PGs.

he took a pack of nogoodnicks and ne'erdowells..

and made them into a defensive force!! Kobe still talks about how Nate changed his entire approach to the game..

Dave

Thanks for answering my previous question. Now, alleviate my fears:

Is the lock-out imminent? If you answer, in laymens terms. I don’t speak figures and dollar signs to good ;)

Whenever money is involved

I expect a fight. Whenever tradition and precedent are at stake I expect that fight to be nasty. Whenever lawyers stick their noses in too I expect that fight to be long.

All three are true here.

Perfect, thank you.

Those words are a punch to the gut. I’ll soak this year up while I can…

and get plenty of homework done next year :/

I don’t know how he has time to write a paragraph, much less a smart and fun six-page essay on the mechanics of the jump shot or something. Every day. I’m constantly impressed.

Any thoughts on the persistent rumour that the Blazers are interested in Mike Conley?

Would he fit? Is he worth a Bayless/Martell/Rudy level player in a trade?

Wendell just wrote an article about how he always finds himself involved in trade rumours. I know his D leaves something to be desired and he is somewhat passive but I don’t see why they would be wanting to get rid of him.

Well, folks

it’s late and the thread is getting so long my computer is starting to gum up, so I fear it’s time for me to go. But remember, whenever you go out on a late-winter evening and see the stars twinkling down on you in a crystal-clear sky you’ll feel a soft breeze tickle past your cheek. And as it passes that wind will whisper, “Dave… Dave… Dave…….”

Or failing that, you could just read the Memphis preview that’s going up in about 30 seconds.

Night all!
