OK

First I did not just join Blazers Edge. I had recently just joined the SB nation to make a comment there and the new log in name followed me here. I have been coming here for a long time now.

Secondly, sure the Chip Kelly incident is the latest thing that has us fired up, but it’s not like he hasn’t crossed the line with Blazer fans as well. Hell, did anyone even notice that during Canzano’s “Outside the Lines” appearance discussing the Ducks recent troubles he said that “We own this in Oregon.” and cited the “Jailblazers” as his proof? How many years have to go by before we don’t hear about the Jailblazers? I think you should take notice that when he gets on national TV he’s still taking shots at Portland.
He’s garbage.

by Voidman on Feb 27, 2010 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

Whats wrong with talking about the JailBlazer era?

It happened and theres no point just forgetting about it. Plus we are clearly not that same team so why would someone bringing it up even begin to offend you?

Why does it matter if he brings up the past, he’s not lying, it was a bad time for the city and the state. And theres some pretty crappy issues going on with the Ducks, so its totally on topic.

Things like this are not an issue unless you make them an issue. JC does say a lot of annoying things, but he gets way more hate than he deserves.

but to me a boycott is ridiculous. He has every right to his free speech, just like I do. It’s too bad that his blow-horn is bigger than mine, but that’s life. If I want a bigger voice, I can go to school for that or I could start a good site myself.

by meatwad3 on Feb 27, 2010 2:08 PM PST reply actions

Quite simply...

…if you don’t like his writing/views, then don’t hit his articles. The Oregonian surely monitors the number of hits he gets and would eventually drop him if he had become irrelevant. Whilst people keep getting irate about what he has to say, increasing the controversy surrounding him and increasing the number of readers of his articles, of course they will keep him. Controversy sells.

I don't know, bud...

if these professional athletes don’t have thick enough skin to deal with one columnist from this small town, do they really have the mettle to play when it matters, perform in the clutch, hit free throws when the game is on the line, or excel in the playoffs? On top of that, it’s Portland… the media here is tame compared to other markets.

Besides, you could make the same arguments for other journalists stirring the pot… Jason Quick w/ his Oden/Underwhelming thing; Marca w/ their monthly Rudy thing; even Blazersedge Ben w/ his Bayless “miscommunication” story from awhile back.

I think it’s a bit unfounded to believe that the Bald One destroys team chemistry or drives players away. That’s just not a reality.

...

I’m not a SUPER duck fan or anything. I just have a hard time reading/listening to Canzano. A lot of the stuff he starts going into is just very opinionated and goes into a tangent and comes out sounding like a big soccer mom. A lot of his stuff is just irrelevant and pointless and what makes it worse is when an issue comes up, he tends to write about it a week later (when it’s not an issue anymore).

When going to Blazer games this past month with my father we always have the radio on and he just goes on and on and on about the Oregon Ducks thing. He doesn’t go on the specifics on what the players are doing and so on, he just concentrates on how Chip Kelly needs to play daddy and come out and say something when he has already said something.

This is the same thing he does with the Blazers, when something comes up he pulls the “image” card and goes on cruise control with it. It is just very hard to listen to it and end up changing the radio.

It also doesn’t help that he deletes my comments when it’s no pro-canzano. For instance I commented on his absolutely unfunny video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgBrH4c4EUA) and on his blog. I said that it was not funny and poorly made (watch it, it’s absolutely horrible and not something he should even consider doing, he’s not a comedian). I also commented on how his websites all registered under Google as malware containing sites and were not able to be accessed by anyone. He deleted all of those comments too.

The guy to me just sounds like a big dick… but that’s just my take.

Oh and let’s not forget the “Andre Miller will never work, let’s not fool ourselves” crap. Then when you finally see one of the most consistent point guards start playing well with his new team he coincidentally changes his mind and says IT COULD work. It’s almost like a joke like as if no one has noticed how good Andre Miller is and how vital he is to the blazers now.

to anyone who doesn't co-sign this...

then you just haven’t been paying attention. Look what this virus of a “columnist” has down to our local news media. Blazers, Beavers, Vikings, Ducks. It doesn’t matter who you are a fan of.

Remember how he attacked the Blazers to the point where Paul Allen was ready to sell the team?

Remember how he convicted and besmirched Jeremiah Dominguez and Scott Morrison in his column before actually bothering to collect any of the facts? And then when they were cleared of any wrongdoing he falls deathly silent on the issue and moves on to attacking the next.

Remember how he wanted Mike Riley fired because he could never be the coach that Dennis Erickson is? Talk about a contradiction is what he claims to stand for.

This list goes on and on and on and on.

He has zero journalistic integrity. And should be held accountable. Retribution is a b*tch.

There are WAY bigger fish to fry than a sportswriter that I disagree with. Furthermore if I was to join the cause I wouldn’t do something as despicable as boycotting local businesses that sponsor him.

Up and Down with Canzano

I listen on occasion and like some of the stuff he does. I don’t think he has a problem with people disagreeing with him or even admitting when he is wrong. Does he go too far one way or the other with is opinions? Sometimes. Is he worse than “The Godfather”? No. He annoyed me to no end the year after the Blazers drafted Roy and Aldridge. He seemed to want to drag the team into any controversy possible but he has taken a different tone as I think the Blazers have shown the change they made that season was genuine.

He may not be a saint but he isn’t the devil either.

If you are serious about this, my advice would be to start a website (a real one that is well-done, not something that is cheap and slapped together) where you assemble a record of:

1. all of the idiotic/baseless opinions he has had;

2. all of the times he has contradicted himself;

3. all of the times where he erred/stretched the truth to make his case.

While you are at it, see if you can gather facts about the claims he has made about himself. It looks like he wrote his own Wikipedia page, and he said many things about himself over the years that make me wonder if he’s trying to inflate himself to gain credibility.

For example, who ever heard of the “AP Sportswriter of the Year” award before he supposedly won it? Who won it before him? Who won it after him? Does the award carry any credibility whatsoever?

I also wonder if people in the media take him seriously – beyond his supposed ability to attract listeners/readers. Think you can get anyone in the media to comment about him anonymously? I bet you could.

Of course, you will be tarred and feathered as a “hater”, but so what? Be logical, be as factual as you can, and let the readers decide.

I don’t think calling his sponsors will do much good since it only shows that you are listening to/reading him. I, and it sounds like many others, have tried to vote by turning off their radios from 3-6, not clicking his article links, etc. to no avail (to the contrary, O-Live has a special “Canzano” link at the top of their online sports section.

So, try ratcheting up the awareness a notch. It couldn’t hurt, could it? The Oregonian and 95.5 already promote him to death so I can’t see how it would get worse.

No, WE are not boycotting his sponsors.

I’m writing an email thanking his sponsors. It’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do if you hadn’t written this fanpost, so I thank you for that.

I don’t agree with him most of the time, but he’s an opinion columnist. He’s entitled to his opinion as much as anyone and I don’t see a valid reason for trying to get him thrown off the air. The idea of trying to silence someone you disagree with just seems really silly to me.

Thanks again for all the email addresses.

You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.

by hurryup09 on Mar 1, 2010 8:14 AM PST reply actions

I have some problems with this post.

As any intelligent person in this country knows the way you REALLY cast your vote is where you spend your money. Our dollars hold way more power than a vote. Even local elections where a small number of votes can turn an election cannot compete with the power of a dollar.

I do boycott certain businesses with my dollars that I consider to be morally bankrupt, or contribute to really egregious causes, and I take it very seriously. I take it as seriously as casting my vote on election day. I don’t think boycotting a business is something to take lightly, but something to take pride in, as boycotting can take some work. It can take dedication to not visit those places. It can be hard when they are big businesses that are everywhere. I also realize I can’t possibly boycott every business that I think is deleterious to my environment, so I pick and choose my battles.

I think JC is a douche. I don’t particularly like most of his stories, and hate how he tries to make all stories about him, but I don’t think he warrants a mobilization of people to try to silence him. That would be giving him WAYYYYYYY too much power. For me he doesn’t even come close to meeting my requirements to boycott. Because when I say I’m gonna boycott someone I follow through with it.

Also, as a clarifier understand that I’m not against boycotting just him at the Oregonian or his joke of a radio show. It’s easy to not click his links, voice your complaints with their PR department and to not listen to the radio show. But listing all of his sponsors and suggesting that we should all stop giving them our business ( over you disagreeing with a sportswriter they sponsor ) is incredibly civically irresponsible. Those businesses that you suggest we all stop giving our ( very important, given this economy ) dollar to have not done anything more than sponsor a sportswriter to get more business. They aren’t ( so far as I know ) burning down rainforests, using slave labor, or any other number of disgusting practices that I consider to be boycott worthy. Do they REALLY deserve to be neglected of incredibly important dollars simply because JC ruffled your feathers? Do you really want to hurt your local economy that badly just to prove a point to a douchebag sportswriter? If your answer is yes than I’m afraid you and I have nothing else to talk about.

"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden

They Have a Choice

You make it sound as if the businesses that advertise on Canzano’s show don’t have a choice. They could easily run their ads on a different program, or even better…They could sponsor one of our local sports teams instead of the hack who attacks them.

by Voidman on Mar 1, 2010 11:37 AM PST up reply actions

And you make it sound as if sponsoring JC is some kind of mortal sin. You should find a cause more worthy of your efforts, as you are clearly a motivated and passionate person.

In my opinion trying to hurt local businesses for sponsoring someone who has done nothing more than state an opinion you disagree with is just wrong.

Yeah...

There’s was some discussion about that. I’m not the only one involved in this, and this is going on on other websites, which of course are mostly Ducks related due to the recent goings on.
I brought it here because as a Blazer fan I am also disgusted by Canzano’s sensationalistic garbage.
The reality of it all though is people’s attention spans are too short to devote an entire website to this. We realize Canzano is not likely to lose all of his sponsors from this, we just hope that we can affect enough to hold him accountable for all the hyperbole and misinformation he spews.
Thanks.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

I stopped listening to all sports talk radio many years ago...

because when you think about it they have to be outlandish and controversial to get people to listen. It’s amazing that sports radio still exists.

The paradigm of the local paper having the only access to the local teams is shifting with the death of newspaper industry. You no longer are limited to 1 or 2 perspectives of your local team.

Unless you are new to watching hoops what does a sports writer provide that you easily figure out yourself from watching games?

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
