Junk Drawer - 2/27/10 - Most Hated vs Most Favorite Players

I was listening to the NBA Today podcast and he had his most hated and most loved teams.  I thought it seems like a swell idea for a Fanpost if I kicked it up a notch.  I would have mad it a stand alone Fanpost but it would have gotten junked up anyhow.

Here is the exercise:  Take your six favorite current NBA players and put them against your six least favorite current NBA players.  I've read lots of folks saying they hate Kobe and LeBron so it could be interesting.

Star-divide

My 6 Favorites:

Nash, Roy, Battier, Nowitzki, Oden, & Outlaw

My 6 Least Favorites:

Miller, Ben Gordon, Carmelo, Marion, Shaq, & Fisher

I think my favorites would win.  It's a good thing I stopped hating Kobe and don't mind LeBron.  I wanted to add Darius to my least favorite, and add Shav and Hansbrough to favorites.  I haven't followed Hansbrough since week two of the season, so I didn't mind not adding him.

Luv,

Tom

A tsunami is going to hit here in 5 hours and 9 minutes

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it will be between the size of the one that just hit Samoa and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. My wife had to go to work at 4:30 AM. Someone on the news just said they expect a 12 footer to hit the windward side of the Big Island.

CNN advised people to consult the evacuation plans in their telephone book. They didn’t really say how bad they expect it to be, but it could be quite significant. Hopefully it’s just similar to a spring tide or a storm.

by Norsktroll on Feb 27, 2010 7:44 AM PST up reply actions

I just got this in my e-mail

I haven’t had a phone book in years.

ETA of first wave to Big Island has been estimated at 11:04 AM. Civil Defense Sirens will be activated at 6:00 AM and all shorelines on all islands will be asked to evacuate. Estimates of wave heights are: Hilo – 13.58 feet Kahului – 9.58 feet Kawaihae – 4.03 feet Haleiwa – 3.44 feet Kauai – 2.85 feet Honolulu – 2.88 feet

Simmons is complaining on Twitter about NBA agent Aaron Goodwin sending a "digital attack dog" after him

Goodwin’s company epresents:
Matt Barnes – (Primary) Jamal Crawford – (Primary) Demar DeRozan – (Primary)
Kevin Durant – (Primary) Francisco Garcia – (Primary) Al Horford – (Primary)
Dwight Howard – (Primary) Patrick Mills – (Primary) DeMarcus Nelson – (Secondary)
Leon Powe – (Primary) Nate Robinson – (Primary) Rodney Stuckey – (Primary)
Marcus Williams – (Primary) Terrence Williams – (Primary)

Which of those guys has Simmons insulted recently? Certainly not Durant. Also not Howard or Horford. Also he welcomed Nate Robinson’s transfer to the Celtics. He doesn’t care about Mills, Powe, Barnes, DeRozan, Nelson, etc. I don’t really get it, but it sounds like he’s pretty angry about it.

Btw, he’s a free agent this summer. If you are ESPN, what offer do you make him?

It's a crime that Dwyer isn't as big/popular of a NBA writer as Simmons

It is incredibly stupid.

I guess Dwyer needs to add snippy comments that don’t hold up under scrutiny.

He called an article in the ORLANDO Sentinel "The dumbest sports column of 2010"

Because it name-dropped him in an article about why Dwight Howard should be considered an MVP candidate. Nate Jones criticized him on Twitter, and Simmons freaked out because he’s a pretentious d-bag who can’t handle criticism of his lazy writing. He’s blocked Ziller and Kelly Dwyer on much less.

You should have read his ignorance on Muhammad Ali yesterday.

It always makes me chuckle how a child of the 80s can say with absolute confidence that all of America was behind Ali after coming back to box after the draft dodging incident.

by In Walks Rudy on Feb 27, 2010 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

All the way around?

What about passing and defense? He’s only a stud all the way around if “all the way around” means scoring.

He’s still young though, he might eventually achieve a Tracy McGrady type impact, only if he works real hard though.

Batum brings the doom.

McGrady was better than Durant is now. It’s funny how a knee injury completely derails a scoring wings career, but doesn’t have the same impact on a big.

Running in a straight line has it’s benefits. Oden recovers from Micro-fracture way easier than Durant would. Just another reason he’s the right pick….

Whatcha mean?

Like when doubling someone? Or going for a block?

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:27 PM PST up reply actions

not exactly.

mostly how you see one of your teammates in a mismatch so you go to help and then the rest of the team doesn’t rotate. then, if your matchup scores, it docks you, without accounting for your good help defense. also how if you get screened off your guy no one helps you.

but this might just be because i play for the suns and they suck on this game.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 4:30 PM PST up reply actions

While you're starting out

Just stay on your guy. If the coach wants you to help, he’ll put you on them, or you can double them when they get the ball. Otherwise, stay on your guy.

You got trouble with screens? I thought they were too easy to avoid— but when I lose my man a teammate usually covers, and I’m on the Knicks.

Is it on the computer? Do they have a patch yet?

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

SHORT answer is, though

Just stay on your man and don’t try to guard everyone. Stay home, box out, be a good soldier.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

oh i do stay on my guy almost all the time. and i don’t have trouble with screens (except the official, who does a bang up job screening me on the baseline and causes me to swear) except ones in a while on a good one while my guy is driving. the problem for me is that the Suns have no interior D and a lot of times Nash ends up on their center. Or they play Barbosa at SF. When I play Utah, he always gets abused by Millsap on the block. Seems to me that being a good teammate on defense is more about help defense than just covering your own guy when you see the other team exploiting a mismatch for easy buckets that will defeat your team.

i loooooove playing defense on guys like Kobe and Brandon.

I did a great job on Brandon when i’ve played him. blocked his shot once and all. Kobe I can do ok on, but he makes crazy shots so there’s nothing i can do. Monta Ellis is the worst to guard.

i don’t think it would have been possible for me to get stats up there that fast. were you getting A+ every game or something? what team do you play for? you must get lots of easy assists or something? the highest rating i have is a 95 on layups.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

I got A+ with my big man in twelve minutes per game, you just gotta do the right stuff.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2010 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

i average an A rating now.

so i do all the right stuff, but it took me quite a while to get there. learning the buttons and what not.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

95 on layups is good

Yeah, I’m a PG, I always get an A+ (except for some of the first games when the player sucks), and I spent all of my points first on layups and shooting in traffic, and then on my stamina so I could use turbo more.

I get an A+ every game and in the beginning I at least got 1500~ skill points a game, and now I get around 2400 or more a game.

PG is definitely easier though.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

i think with even getting A+ the most points i’ve got (without getting a mileston) is about 1400.

some of the objectives are kinda ridiculous. one of them was I had to hold my matchup to 2 points. and i was playing the grizzlies and throughout the game had to guard Mayo and Gay.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 4:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, those are tough

Also, my guy has hit 3 threes all season, all out of luck. I have a 45 for threes. But I get told to shoot 40% on threes for a game… it ain’t gonna happen.

As your player improves you’ll do better in games, but until then, do the teammate stuff like blocking out EVERY play even if you got no chance at the ball.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

yeah i can't hit 3's for crap.

i’m rated a 70 and unless i’m wiiiiide open, they don’t fall. it’s annoying. i’m hoping once i get it to 75 i can hit them with regularity. my scoring average will jump a bit if that happens.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

I don't work on shooting at ALL

Except in drills. I NEVER shoot jumpers.

Get layups and your athletic skills up to 99 as quick as ya can. I got speed, stamina, agility/quickness/whatever it’s called, all 99.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

my big man is pretty much modded out at everything I need, so Warren is adding a sick 18 footer currently.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2010 5:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I'm also doing dunking last

Because I’m at 81, and that’s good enough. Plus, it’s so expensive!

So now, I am getting rebounding up as high as I can.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

Here is what is at 99

Layups
Shoot in Traffic
Passing
Hands
Steal
On Ball Defense
Speed
Stamina
Vertical
Quickness
Offensive Awareness

With others except for shooting pretty high. That’s why it’s so easy for me now.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 5:01 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, I only get like 1300-1400 points per game, you could fewer if you’re 7’5’’.

There are fewer categories to upgrade as a big though. You just need block/vertical/conditioning on defense and inside/post scoring on offensive, naturally with a 99 in both rebounding categories.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, that makes sense.

i’m no where near that level. but it feels like a realistic progression for me so far. it’s nice feeling like i’ve earned everything i can do on the court.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 5:06 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, for a PG that makes sense.

i needed to add those shot points so i could be decent at scoring. as it is, i still get almost all my points on layups and post moves. but my mid range jumper is much more reliable now and that has made a big difference. i’m upping my vertical now so i can up my dunk and start dunking. haha

by DrivetheLane on Feb 27, 2010 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

no, you get “good positioning” if you box out properly on o-reebs.

If the committee wants to go “eye test” based on the Kansas game and/or forgive Cornell for its horrible loss to Penn a couple weeks ago, they could conceivably get an 11, maybe even a 10. If the committee wants to go pure numbers, they’ll be a low 12/high 13 if they take care of business next weekend.

He doesn’t seem to be a troublemaker. Then, if the writing is clearly on the wall after the season, I suspect he’ll quietly talk to KP about his future (loosely translated to: “If I’m not going to crack the rotation, please trade me somewhere that needs a SF”)

A number of teams would love to take a shot on a still-young Martell, with signs of improving defense, and a chance that the rest of the game will eventually click.

if someone was a great steal guy for five years, he wouldn’t be as high as an average steal person for a decade. It’s all about games played.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions

I thought Camby would be higher because of that

He usually averages at least SOME.

But he has injuries, so maybe that’s why.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

steals per game would be more intuitive, raw is more challenging for sure.

Camby’s steals are something I’m really thinking about right now. Sure feels like we could have an insane trapping lineup if we wanted to run that kind of scheme when we get down. We have a lineup of all above-average steals guys with tremendous length.

It’s an asset that could be really effective.

#52 #10 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2010 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

A younger Camby may have been a good PF for Oden

Can rebound AND block shots to cover for Oden, and likewise, and hit a jumper (well, his jumper has been bad this year, right?).

abysmal, he’s at like 25% on long 2s.

I think the biggest thing is that he could get the ball to Greg in good position.

really interesting stuff raised in the Wingcast. I love that Pelton chills out Ben’s drama and makes it even-keeled.

Anyway, Ben talked about how Nate’s been super weird answering questions about Camby, refusing to even address him after the 18 rebound game. The theory floating around the media is that Nate is a little frustrated that Camby and Miller have their own way to do things, while Travis and Steve would do things in the exact fashion that he wanted.

People hypothesized this in the JD as well.

Yep they take some weird concentration

It’s why it helps if people respond to the original post so you can keep order a bit.

Still working on my next one. I’m looking at maybe a movie one. Cloudy, go for it.

right, it’s a lot easier to keep track of if people will just post to the main post.

just a way of mixing field goals, free throws, and three pointers. Threes are more than twos, free throws should count as possessions, that stuff. It’s not advanced.

it’s essentially, how many points do I get per shot. If I shoot a three, a two, and two free throws, making the three and a free throw, I scored 4 points on 3 possessions.

True shooting percentage is a measure of shooting efficiency that takes into account field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws.
