Bayless' Role Beyond This Season
There's been some recent discussion of a Rudy for Darren Collison trade this summer. I'm a big Collison fan, so I give it a thumbs up and it seems to make sense for both parties. However, if something like this were to happen (completely hypothetical), where does that leave Bayless? People like to describe Bayless as a SG in a PG body. If Bayless could become that PG of the future for us, I'd love it. If not, I'm all for trading him and getting a legit backup SG in return. That being said, how would you compare Bayless' value to other young players around the league, like DeMar Derozan and Stephen Curry, for example?

Better than DeMar
Not as good as Curry.
But, I think he would be fine in a role of Backup SG and spot PG/SF minutes for the future if Rudy were to be traded. Miller/Collison/JB at the one Roy/JB at the two Batum/Webster/JB at the three. He’s big enough to play SF in small stints IMO.
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
What matchups? He's 6'2" or 6'3" (depending on whom you ask).
He’d give up at least four inches to any SF in the league.
That’s a recipe for disaster, which is why nobody throws 6’2" SFs out there.
eh
Against a scrubby second-third string SF I wouldn’t be to worried about Bayless getting exposed out there..
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
his wingspan is only 2'7"
so his standing reach is 7’1"
the scrubbiest scrub that ever scrubbed at sf could post him up.

Rudy or Bayless will be the backup SG going forward
with either of them also seeing minutes elsewhere. In Bayless’ case, at the 1, in Rudy’s at the 3. One of them should be packaged to get us a post-Miller point guard.
"I want to be traded to a contender" is almost always code-speak for "I'm a loser."

I guess what I'm trying to say...
is that by trading for another PG, like Collison, it seems like we’re giving up on Bayless as our PG of the future. I’m not saying we shouldn’t do this, but it just seems like he loses a lot of value that way because it’s like the team is telling him that they don’t have confidence in him to play the position we originally wanted him to play.
"Nicolas! You're the strongest boy in the world!"
Webster isn't giving us anything as a backup,
at least Rudy attacks when his 3 ball isn’t falling, and is used to playing a backup role. I’d rather dump Webster for Collison, although that would push Roy/Rudy to the 3.

I'm not sure Webster gets us Collison
and as you said, that’d force Roy or Rudy to the 3 where neither want to be.

don't know
he looks like a PF to me… I’d give him a shot there to see what happens

I think he has the lateral quickness to play spot minutes there

Bayless' jumper is still inconsistent
Once it gets just a little bit better, Bayless is the pefect pg to play with Roy at the sg. Bayless is getting much better at running an offense, but for those who continue to complain that he will never be a “pure” pg (who cares? See: Parker, Tony), remember that Roy is a ball dominant sg. They’ll be splitting ball handling duties.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.

that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!
It would have to be a sign and trade though, because the Blazers will be over the cap
(of course, who knows if there will even be NBA basketball in 2011-12 at this point?)
Tim Duncan retires. Nate’s contract expires and KP hires Greg Popovich to coach and trades Rudy and Rex (etc) for Tony Parker…how fabulous are my dreams?

IMHO
Although Jerryd makes contributions to this team, in no way is he the point guard of anyone’s future. I was watching closely all last year hoping for signs of this sort of development and can see clearly through his expanded role this year that he only has the potential to be a pretty good combo guard.
In my opinion, give Andre Miller decent range on his jumper (sadly lacking) and he, being one hell of a smart player, is nearly the prototypical point guard.

the 2nd unit strugged again tonight early in the 4th quarter
The Wolves were making a run and the baby Blazers were having trouble getting a decent look in their half-court offense, so Nate had to send Andre back in to restore order. I don’t think Jerryd or Rudy can run the team very efficiently when Roy and Miller aren’t on the floor. Nate may have to “stagger” the rotation so Dre and Brandon are always on the floor against playoff-caliber defenses. And it wouldn’t be a bad idea if KP added another veteran PG to the roster before Monday, just as a precaution
