Winning after adversity: A challenge for historians

Winning after adversity: A challenge for historiansThe optimistic theme of this Blazers season is the deep knowledge that teams who have to pass through the fires of hell end up on the other side stronger, smarter and more united. I started to approach the prospect of whether this was a valid truth or just legend, but quickly realized I don't have the perspective to even begin such a task. So for those historians of competitive sports, can you provide examples of teams (or individuals) who triumphed after experiencing serious challenge, with particular emphasis on injuries.
