Junk Drawer - 2/26/10 - Most Iconic Internet Videos
I was going to start a list of the most iconic internet videos and wanted to make sure I listed them all, so I Googled it and found a way better list than mine.
The 100 Most Iconic Internet Videos
It still seems like a good topic and I don't have to do any work. Just follow that there link. Numa Numa is one of my favorites, just because of the eyebrow part. Back Dorm Boys is also one of my favorites. I am not sure I agree with their top 10. although, I do like the list overall.

Oh, the Office character.
Don’t you think he is more like the 21st century’s answer to Joseph Stalin? Kinda, say, Pol Pot-esque?

But the negativity of Meredith changed my mind. If I was going to go political, I’d have to go with Mao Zedong because of what he did with Land Reform.

The TV and cinema guide I've been mostly using for the past couple of years came out with an iPhone/iPod app
They just made themselves obsolete. For free. Morons ;)
I can customize it, and it has additional pictures and info that isn’t even in the printed guide. It’s very usable, though overviews of “what’s on” will be even better on the iPad. The only thing that is missing are one or two interesting columns in the magazine, but I can easily live without that or search for it online. I don’t even watch that much TV anyway, especially scheduled programming. I just check what’s on right now, or whatever I wanted to watch recorded or on DVD.
A European guide. With Eurosport and stuff.
The only US networks with direct affiliates are CNN, ESPN, MSNBC (I used to get a real NBC, with Leno and Conan and a Web TV show), Fox (only series, but some from HBO), and TNT (films and series).
I didn't realize you hated Prez that much

Not sure I would highly recommend it, I don’t love the end of it as much as the suspense building up, but it’s definitely a good movie (the original one, part II not so much). I also know where it plays, so that might be a part of why I like it. Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB currently have it around 7 of 10 stars.

Timmay’s favorite leading man is Hugh Grant. During the middle of a busy dinner service at an Italian restaurant in San Jose, Timmay was heard to remark “I can’t quite explain it, you know? Coach Nate
In the past, wasn’t the common opinion of Nate on BE was that he could not develop talent and Sergio was prime example? Now the common opinion is that he is a great developmental coach but cannot win a championship.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
I thought the common opinion was that Nate couldn't coach a player like Sergio.
It was more a conflict of style thing.
Batum brings the doom.
by The Running Man on Feb 26, 2010 4:26 AM PST up reply actions
There're people who say he doesn't do a good job of development
Sergio is the only guy who HASN’T improved under the current staff, unless you count Rudy right now, but he gets an injury pass.
Odie, Batum, Roy, Bayless, Joel, all improved greatly. But because Batum or Rudy or Bayless aren’t getting a lot of minutes right now, they’re being stunted— in some people’s opinions.
I think we’ve obviously done a pretty good job developing talent, and while you can’t attribute that directly to Nate, you can’t say he isn’t a part of it as well.
#52
I see
I have seen some folks giving all the development credit to the assistant coaches.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
Yeah, and Bayno gets a lot of credit with Oden n' stuff
But they all help everyone as a staff. It’s not just ONE guy helping a dude.
You develop guys by helping them see their faults, encouraging them to work hard and rewarding them as much as you can for it, by having guys who will work hard on their own and listen to coaching, and having a franchise that supports the players overall. Having guys available at all hours to work or talk or whatever, like we’ve traditionally done.
I think a lot of teams don’t have that steady foundation that can help bring players along, and that’s why we’ve been pretty successful, overall, at developing our players.
#52
Good points
I honestly don’t think Nate could even coach a team to 50 wins, much less win a playoff game.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
He's also pretty bad at coaching injury prevention.
#52
by Mortimer on Feb 26, 2010 4:34 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Some guys just don't become as good as they could or should because of themselves
It isn’t all their coaches or their surroundings. And some become better than they would otherwise.
If one thinks that Batum WILL be stunted by not playing 30 minutes a night now, that’s fine, but he’s done nuthin’ but improve— and really, he’s quite a bit better than last year even though he was hurt for most of the season and has just spent the first 50 games working with our coaches.
#52
And it ain't that I don't WANT Batumsie to play more
I do, he’s my 3rd favorite player.
But to worry that it’s a crisis of some sort when everyone who isn’t Spanish has only gotten better…
And Rudy will be good consistently again.
Bayless improved without a lot of minutes last year, but he’s a different situation… he didn’t really earn the minutes. Batum has earned big minutes right now, so there’s more of a reason to be upset that he doesn’t get 30 minutes.
#52
Is Batum ready for 30 minutes a night?
He came in injured and tired from France and keeps tweaking his shoulder. I think Nate is good at putting players in situations to succeed. I believe he knows the players strengths and weaknesses better than we do.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
If he isn't ready for 30 minutes
Then it’s a clear failing of the coaching staff not to prepare him for it.
#52
My REAL response
It seems like he can play more good minutes than he does, but I think he’ll keep climbing in minutes.
#52
Me too
I think Nate’s priority is setting him up to succeed more than set him up to fail.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
If he set players up to fail

I think Monty did well with Outlaw and Bayno did well with Oden, other than that I think all our players developed at or below the rate I would expect given their age and talent level. Disappointed in what’s happened with LMA, worried Rudy and Batum are being limited by the coaching staff, etc.

RE: assistant coaches and who did what
My take is, we don’t KNOW what each coach did. On the whole, the staff has been pretty good developing our players. Maybe it’s to “what you expected”, but as previously established you are a hard man to please.
Roy: better; top 10 player.
LMA: No substantial improvement after 2nd season
Oden: much better
Bayless: Much better
Joel: Became the best backup in the league
Batum: Better
Martell: Went from guy who couldn’t score or defend to a sometimes-stopped and scorer. Improved.
Outlaw: Improved
Rudy: Jury is out
Sergio: Is Sergio.
Who is the “etc” in who is being limited by minutes aside from Rudy and Batum?
I give a lot of credit to Bayno; I’m a fan of his. Monty’s work is well known with us. Caleb meets guys anytime they want, we hear. But otherwise we don’t hear a lot of it, and they all work on the players as a whole… if LMA doesn’t improve much but everyone else does, it kinda suggests the problem isn’t necessarily how we develop players, right?
You can’t tell me that Roy as a top 10 player and ODEN as one of the best centers this season is something you expected, so they are both above expectations (I know for sure you weren’t sold on Oden, and that’s fine, but it still means it is above your expectations). You thought Bayless was awful last season, so that’s better than you expected. Batum has improved a lot, and we can say it’s from Euro play, we can say it’s from starting last season, we can say it’s from his age, but is it at a level you expected? You expected him to come in right off his injury and be worthy of plays called for him?
I don’t think you’re so homery to think all of these things were expected by you, is all I mean.
LMA has been disappointing. I want Batum to play as much as he can. Pretty much every player has improved to where they should be, or way beyond what most of us had any right to expect.
It’s not all the coaching staff; there’s lots of voices in these guys lives. But they are a big part of it, as a whole.

Confession time.
I grew up liking the Ducks before I even knew there were Blazers.
Ducks basketball, Ducks Football, Ducks Track & Field. My favorite in later years is a toss up between football and basketball.
But I have to say, I went out to eat lunch tonight and turned on the radio as I headed down the road. There were 3 minutes left in the Oregon/USC game. It was a great Oregon finish, the kind you dream of, the kind you get excited about.
And I simply did not care. I had no joy whatsoever – zip – nada.
I hope all this means is I need a new coach to guide my Ducks, but I have no idea.

When your team is “improving” to 5-10 in conference play on the year (that record being a 3 win “improvement” from last year’s conference record) it’s hard to get into the game.
Hey, I’m sure Ernie can get the team to a 9-9 conference record if he’s just given three more years to build up the team again.

So bad he knew it while he was singing.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
and he's still there?
American Idol is a self-defeating show, in the end. cause soon it will be enjoyed only ironically and people will all vote for the worst singers. and AI almost encourages this with their audition weeks where they show 80% bad singers.

Yeah, he made it through
The really crappy ones get weeded out once the “sort of goods” get voted off.

i just keep hoping that one of these days, one of them wins it all. someone like Sanjaya who was even worse than Taylor Hicks. cause that might be the end of AI. Simon has already seen the end, I think. probably why he’s leaving. he can’t take it anymore.

I'd also put Stephen Curry as being better than Miller right now.
That offense helps his stats to be sure, but he’s the real deal.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Brandon Jennings isn't either
He has gotten worse as the season has progressed.
As far as guys on the same level, would you really be indifferent to him vs AI, Jarrett Jack, Shannon Brown, Lou Williams, Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson, TJ Ford, Collison?
Luke Ridnour? Really? Maybe I spent too much time watching the crappy Sonics teams, but I would rather jump off the Fremont than be forced to rely on Ridnour as the Blazers starting PG.
Some of these guys I might argue aren’t even really PGs (Stuckey, Bynum, Ellis, Curry). In my opinion, if you are starting more than one PG, you aren’t.
Holding out for Hedo
I had trouble
There are young guys who aren’t as good but will be better, and I wasn’t sure where to put them. My biggest issue is 11 starting point guards out of 15 in the west being better.
I am hands down the greatest Blazers fan on Blazersedge.
I'd have to do that tomorrow
On the other hand, it is a complete list of point guards I’d rather have than Miller.

i'm feeling more confident in The Hurt Locker's chances as time passes.
i’m not nearly as scared now as I was before. Avatar seems to be fading as award season progresses. I can see Hurt Locker winning nothing except director and picture and Avatar winning more awards overall (technical stuff and maybe score or something). Basterds will get left out in the cold I think, except for Waltz. A Serious Man might pull the upset in original screenplay.

Only problem is Hurt Locker is not the best film of the year
At least compared to Basterds. There is almost zero interest in the film outside of the critics and film geeks, even No Country was a bigger hit with audiences.

Hurt Locker had a small budget though. I think if it had been marketed more, it would have gotten a better response. the films you mention, I would agree, are the best of the year. followed by Up in the Air and Up.
also, personally, i don’t put much stock in what are the most populist films. just cause they make lots of money doesn’t mean they’re great films….so being a big hit with audiences doesn’t hold much weight in my opinion. I know the Academy differs sometimes….
by DrivetheLane on Feb 26, 2010 2:59 PM PST up reply actions
I don't think a movie has to be a blockbuster, but some sort of public validation makes sense.
Not everyone thinks the Blind Side and Avatar are the greatest films they saw.

no, (full disclosure: i haven’t seen The Blind Side) but for The Blind Side to even be nominated is kind of ridiculous. I’d say the same for Avatar but (i don’t know how much you regularly read the JD) my thoughts on that movie are well known around here and at this point, it’s like beating a dead horse….but I’m doing that in 3D and shiny so that makes it good.
by DrivetheLane on Feb 26, 2010 4:02 PM PST up reply actions
Haven't read BE in a while, but we probably agree on Avatar.
I think it should be rewarded for its technical achievements, but there’s more to a film than that.
I get why they nominated Blind Side, it’s to bring in a wider audience. Just like how they finally gave Pixar its due, and sci-fi nerds District 9. It’s all atonement for failing to mention the Dark Knight last year.

the movie was setting up to be an all time great, but it decided to turn into a balls to the walls action movie. i like those kinds of movies, but dark knight had a different feel than that the first 2/3 of the movie.

well, all the conflict had to come to a head....the ending seemed logical to me I guess.
the biggest problem with it, I think, is that the ending with The Joker might not hold up as well because I think they planned on The Joker returning, but then Ledger died. I think the ending of The Joker arc still works thematically though.
out of curiosity, what would you have changed about the end?

yeah. the first 2/3 made it seem like a classic film noir type movie, but the end felt like a dumb-it-down superhero movie. i wish nolan had found a better balance, im not sure what exactly i would have done, id have to think about it.

You're saying that they look like they're giving it their all. And you know why they look that way? Because they're bad, and it literally takes them the maximum physical effort to accomplish basic baseball tasks like throwing the ball from short to first. When David Eckstein throws the ball to first base, he has to wind up like a shot-putter, spin around forty-three times, and launch it at an angle 89 degrees from the horizontal. Afterwards, he undergoes an IV drip for a fortnight and he's so out of breath that he requires several months of acupuncture to regain the power of speech. For this we laud him. -Junior of Deadspin on 'scrappy' players

Did you know the Blazers went 98-0 last year?
Yes! Yes! In the face!
and Ben provided the block on Kobe
that went all the way across the court to the basket for 3 points to win the game, I think we all remember that moment.
Did you know Ben created the cross-over? It was called the ‘Golliver’ until he modestly changed its name so that the glorious masses could (poorly) copy the move in his honor.
Its truth, our benevolent leader also is responsible for the entirety of hip-hop which he doesn’t record because his glorious voice would break our peon headphones.
The Macy’s parade originally had Ben in the sleigh until it was realized that seeing his visage on TV, was causing too many women to leave their husbands.

most of the SI jinx can be explained by simple regression to the mean
to get the cover, you have to do something special— shouldn’t be surprising that performance drops, plus most of these last events haven’t been our strengths.

Despite some of the opinions around here (many of them are tongue in cheek), I think Rudy is a good player. Over his career he is maybe outperforming his contract, so that makes it tough to trade him. Please he gets a lot of eyeballs glued to the TV, and batums in the seats.

Clearly KP did it as a stop-gap, a way to help stabilize the 5 and get the team to the playoffs as a reward (to players and fans) for a tough season. But fans will expect more than he can probably provide.

I usually like CNN quite a bit. But stories like that are so predictable. Every mom and pop news show on the planet has covered that drama. I’ve dived with orcas and watched them closely from small boats in Canada and Australia and also seen a whale show or two. But who are you kidding, despite their looks that humans find endearing they are predators who wouldn’t mind attacking anything from small fish to seals to sharks in the wild. It’s not more surprising to me than a tiger or lion attacking a trainer.

Billy Hoyle linked some stats I haven’t seen before.
A quote from the guy’s blog on how the stats are figured out.
i first look at each player’s 2-year and 1-year adjusted plus-minus numbers … i then take the lower figure of the two, raise it as high as the standard error figure will allow. then if it reaches the higher figure, the t-score will be that higher score rounded up or down to a whole number. if it falls short, i’ll take the average of the two, and then round it up or down to a whole number … if a player did not play in half of his team’s minutes in either the 1-year or 2-year adjusted plus-minus scores, then i’ll place an asterix next to it, so that you know that it’s taken from a relatively small sample size … if i place 2 asterixes next to it, then that means both years have relatively small sample sizes … when a player hasn’t played in half of his team’s minutes in the given season, i typically would not include them in any of the major awards talk (most valuable teammate & all-teammate honors).

I would expect something like a “no reacquiring within the running season” in the next CBA. The Mavs couldn’t trade anymore for Gortat because the Magic just matched their offer. So it’s not like they insinuated they don’t want him anymore, they really really wanted him. Why should a team be worse off in such a situation than a team that just traded away one of their guys?
That situation indeed doesn't make any sense.
There’s no reason the Mavs couldn’t initiate trade discussions in that situation. Presumably Cuban is outspoken enough to push for a fix on that.

I remember Clipper fans SO ANGRY that they couldn’t keep Q-Rich because their team was cheap.

With a vastly different team, yeah
They won 48 games and went to the 2nd round, led by Brand and Cassell.
#52
That's what I thought, ok.
Been a while. I remember the Clips being the young fun team, then swapped people around and went to the playoffs. I forgot it was Brand and Cassell.
Last year I watched a classic Clippers game from 2000 or so
Kandi man was awful awful awful, but back then was the high potential #1 pick, and all they talked about was that Kareem was working with him, he’ll be awesome, and then he airballs a layup and they go quiet, but then he hits a hook shot and they go KAREEM’S WORK HAS REALLY PAID OFF.
It was a national game. It was funny to watch, knowing all we know now. And Maggette had cornrows.
#52
Their management got clobbered when they only offered him a $50 million deal – which he declined thinking he could do better after playing a good season. Which didn’t happen, and the only team dumb enough to sign him were the Wolves to a deal that was less than that but still too rich.
I remember that
It was nuuuuts. And then the Wolves swoop in and way overpay…
It was like a Simmons “what if” article.
#52
I focused on him to see what people saw in him then
Kandi was really, really bad. Not THAT big, no touch at all, his body was soft, he didn’t seem to do anything well.
But man, when someone dominates at Pacific University, you’re kinda forced to draft ’em.
#52
from what I remember, at the time teams were scrambling to get centers because of the way the game was going (pre-hand checking rules) low scoring defensive struggles and what not… but not many big men were available period (either through the draft or via free agency)

by The Arkitect on Feb 26, 2010 3:52 PM PST up reply actions
It's in the digital tier on Comcast here
But still available on basic cable as a subchannel off NBC, if you know how to get it.
You have a university supplier right?
Do they actually go through a cable company to supply your signal?
Normally your cable provider inserts all kinds of commercials to say how great they are
That will normally give it away. Or you can go to Zap2it, put in your zip code, and see which lineup matches up to your lineup.
It’s possible you just need a QAM tuner for your computer. A USB one is probably around 50 bucks.
aren’t all tiers digital now? I think they are up here
#10, #21, #52
Pie Doesn't Win Championships, Cake Wins Championships
by The Arkitect on Feb 26, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions
That's a big question
Technically everything over typically 35 is now digital. Comcast wants you to have their box for everything. But most locations still have the classic “expanded basic” channels over clear QAM signal, which most newer TV’s have a tuner for, and which can be used on a lot of computer tuners. Some Comcasts are turning these channels off (grrrrrr).
Once you get past channel 99, that gets into what was formerly known as the “digital tier” where they charge you 10 extra bucks a month for a ton of channels you don’t watch, and 2 you do. That’s where Universal Sports is, unless you have the aforementioned QAM tuner and clear channels.
There’s a whole separate fee if you want HD on any channel other than the locals.
well, we can agree that Comcast is the Sux if that’s what your going for

It’s just that it violates some subjectively accepted player valuations. Wallace is not inefficient. Why is Kaman in the data cloud between Melo, James, Bosh, Wade? Is Durant really such an outlier? Just odd. He has two follow-up charts, but those paint a less typical distribution (financial charts quite often look like this).
