Rudy getting too much hate recently?
have been reading stuff on this site for a while, and am really suprised with how quick people get REALLY angry at our players.
Ill admit many people (including myself) have an unwavering love of Rudy Fernandez that... well lol he probably doesnt deserve. However, I feel like alot of people arent watching the same game I am with some of the criticism Rudy gets. First off, Rudy is a lazy defender? Hes no Bruce Bowen/Artest (in his younger years), but uhh he actually disrupts alot of plays and forces the person hes defending to take alot of contested shots. His Defensive rating is actually ahead of Batums, Websters, Bayless, Roy, Outlaw, Blake... Yeah well you get my point. Hes hardly the lackadasical defender people make him out to be. And webster and batum... are actually pretty average, batum/webster rarely hold their opponent below their normal %/totall points. Actually rudy has a better adjusted +/- when hes on the floor than Batum or Webster... or blake or bayless etc.
And when people say when hes not making shots he contributes nothing? well, our team scores better with him on the floor no matter how hes shooting, and when hes not scoring his rebounding totalls are actually very decent. I have watched 4-5 games where his shot wasnt falling only to see him out rebound our powe forwards, and pick up 2-3 steals and 3-5 assists. Does he do all these things every night? Nope... and alas... How I wish he did. Hes got flaws, but whenever we open up the flow of the offense he does pretty great, and hes not a big liability on defense, and actually statistically si the best 3 guard we have... which just baffles me... cause I never would have guessed that.
Anyway, all my stats brough to you 82 games and basketball reference.
PS. Rudy like every player deserves criticism when he plays as inconsistent as he has. But lets not throw out unsubstantiated claims.

Are you trying to tell me that Rudy is a better defender than Batum?
Cause that is downright silly.

actually
i’m quite impressed with Rudy’s defense this year. if he started hitting his 3’s, we’d all be swallowing the Rudy pill much easier!

I don't hate Rudy
I think he is great the problem is Nate does not think as highly of him as I do (and I think Management would rather keep Nate then Rudy), and rather then pussy foot around the issue I would like to trade Rudy for something good (Conley, Collison) before his value decreases (i.e.: Sergio) and we can only get a 2nd round pick for him.

"Portland played 96 minutes of pro basketball in 48 hours, and turned it over nine times.
Darren Collison(notes) gets that in 32 minutes."
Nate will love him.

Keep in mind its his rookie year

There is nothing management or Nate could do to lower Rudy's value to that of Sergio
Sergio was way overrated by Portland fans. Nate didn’t decrees his value, we got what he was worth. I’m not at all worried about not getting equal value for Rudy, he a legit NBA talent and far superior to Serg.
And what makes you think Nate doesn’t value Rudy?

Stats and videos
Sergio’s always been underrated and misused in Portland.
I’m tired of free criticism and now we have stats and videos to check it out
Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!
Most of Sergio's criticism was based off of stats, at least on my part.
I’ll admit I was/am overly critical of him, but his fg%s were horrible and his assist/turnover ratio was worse that Jarrett Jacks when he was in Portland.
I’m curious how you think he should be used? Complete freedom? I’m totally serious too.

his FG% went up the minute he left Portland

I am not so sure KP would keep Nate
over some of these young guys. these are all KP’s players now, if he does not see the progress he was looking for with his team, then looking at new leadership may actually be his next big move…
particularly when the public feedback from the players is not challenging nate but rather saying they are confused as to what their role is, number of players that have cited confusion this season:
1. Roy
2. Aldridge (if these first 2 guys are confused about their roles then the rest on the list are not at all surprising)
3. Miller
4. Blake
5. Outlaw
6. Webster
7. Fernandez
Have not heard this kind of thing from
8. Mills
9. Oden
10. Pendy
11. Cunningham (love this kid, he has not expressed any confusion to how he is being used, but I do, He was huge in that first half against Memphis, when no one else showed up with much intensity, to not see the floor in the second half, hmmm)
12. Pryz
13. Howard
14. Camby
15. Bayless
16. Batum
So almost half of the the roster for the season has expressed confusion about roles. 5 of the 7 have started a rather significant number of games. That is purely a coaching issue, particularly when 2 of your acknowledged top 3 talents are among the list of the confused.

I never said he was better than batum. I said the team allows fer points per possesion with rudy on the floor and rudy has a higher statistical impact on his opponents point per pocession than batum does (which is was defense rating measures). I used these stats to illuminate the fact that rudy is actually not a BAD defender.
This season batum has played very similar minutes off the bench as Rudy has. That argument doesnt hold much weight.
Again, im not saying hes a better defender than Batum. Im simply saying that its a little irrational to claim hes a bad defender or is a defensive liability when hes got the best defensive rating of any guard on the team.
people always scream bad defender when they are annoyed by incosistent offense
I just think that is a trend. 2 seasons ago Martell actually had good defensive intensity more routinely than he has had this season and yet everyone was saying he could not defend…it confuses me at times as well…
Rudy will be fine, he is showing strong signs of shaking out of his slump…I think a lot of our roleplayers just are a bit confused as to what their roles are, and that is affecting their play. Even Roy was confused early on himself, so this has been an ongoing issue with the team, I look at Nate for that.

I agree. Rudy is way underated as a defensive player. I tivo every game and constantly rewind every defensive play to see what happens. Rudy by far closes out on shooters faster and more consistently than any person on the team. In addition, jerryd gets beat off the dribble far more often than Rudy does. In fact, Rudy has had good success against quicker guards by playing off them and then using his height and closing ability to affect their shot. So why does everyone say he is such an awful defender? I think it is a stereotype of european players since that is a common weakness. in addition, Rudy just looks so darn awkward when he gets beat. I’d like to see a bit less hate towards Rudy. I just don’t understand why Rudy is getting hate when he plays his heart out. Blake used to play his heart out and so did Jack, and they also got a lot of hate. I think their is plenty of room for Rudy on this roster – so patience. It takes most europeans several years to adjust to the different NBA game. Rudy is well ahead of the norm.

I agree with everything you said
and i believe that Rudy actually is our best off-ball defender too.
I was talking with an ex-NBA player the other day
about possible lineup permutations, getting Rudy and Jerryd more involved, that kind of thing. This guy is pretty smart, has been around, is someone I respect. His direct quote about Rudy was “He couldn’t guard a chair.” I think his defense has improved and I think he does have his moments, particularly off-ball, but I don’t think he’s underrated.
—Dave
How can you say?..
“He couldn’t guard a chair” isn’t underrating him?.. That’s about as underrated as a guy can get. I don’t care who the giant NBA intellect was I…and many others… don’t see Rudy as a defensive liability. Lets face it there are very few 2-3’s who can guard explosive offensive 2-3’s straight up and Rudy isn’t one of those few. What he is is a heady off ball defender, opportunistic shot blocker, sometimes surprising rebounder and a guy who knows how to get his hands in the passing lanes.
I think far too much is made of guys getting beat one on one. NBA defense is a team endeavor and Rudy is a good teammate.

I think that we want to win just as much as anyone, and if our horse ain't running like he's supose to, I'd think it'd be expected that it be hated on a bit for it....
…. at least until it starts running like it did or i expect it to again… :)

Dont worry.......
Even though he is a high risk/low reward (sure he gets 1 or 2 steals but hs also over commits on 2 or 3 a game and gets beat) player management would never get rid of him. I see more Rudy jerseys and shirts at RG than anyone. I would not doubt management had something to do with his increased playing time on Wednesday so he wont leave. Luckily, it worked out this time. Anyone who would complain publicly about playing time, espcially when they are averaging 22 to 24 minutes a game (over the last two months) is not going to be happy. I’m sorry you have to back up Roy, but thats the breaks.
Its delightful, its delicious, its delug
Rudy is overrated
He does get steals, but he gets burnt for overcommitting for sure. He’s been horribly inconsistent with his shooting, and it’s obvious he’s not happy here. I’ve seen him numerous times looking frustrated, and hanging his head when he gets pulled. I like that he wants to play, but if anything he gets way too much love. He does sell jerseys and he’s a money maker, and unfortunately that will keep him around.

Better team defender than individual defender
In a set defense Rudy will drift away from his man toward the ball. This can dissuade the ball-handler from penetrating, which is not really measurable until he can’t get back to his man in time, then it’s a measurable negative. He also jumps into passing lanes, which is good. Unless his man backcuts him. Then it’s bad. He’s not a stopper or high-flying weakside helper like Batum, but my completely subjective opinion is that he’s usually being effective even when his man is scoring a bit.
