Flagged

For showing too much bubbly exuberance in flagging a negative comment.
I know that’s reading a lot into your words – but I can see it.

the big one

by two4larue on Feb 25, 2010 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yes. The Mike Miller love was his most irrational obsession.

I don’t know why he got banned. I don’t follow things here that closely. There are so many whose names are close to identical, so many who sound like they’re 10 years old…

It’s interesting. The Seattle baseball blogs tend to be exclusive, whereas this site is inclusive. Different philosophies.

exclusive blogs?

that seems contradictory to me

by bmaccorm on Feb 26, 2010 12:43 AM PST up reply actions

"exclusive" here means you exclude some people, you don't automatically

welcome everyone. if a newcomer says something offensive or dumb, they might get kicked out pretty quickly.

“inclusive” means you welcome pretty much everybody, even if they’re dumb or bring up stuff that has been talked to death long ago. BE’s philosophy is to include as many people as possible.

On a related note

Is anybody else irritated at the Slobfather like I am? The guy is the most negative wannabe know-it-all in all local sports (even more than Clownzano).

He throws Nate under the bus after every loss and acts like he has inside info about the team when he really has no access at all. He speaks with certainty with regards to lineup changes etc. but really has no clue.

Just had to get that off my chest

Way too many of the “comments” on his page were exactly what we try to avoid on BE. The responses that start with “you are a stupid moron” don’t really add much to the conversation IMO. Unless posts are civil and thoughtful, they wont be missed by me.

I’d certainly never think to test a site in that manner.

Now, if it is wives we are talking about, I understand that there is more than one BEdger whose wife could charitably be described as 300 lbs and ugly as a mud fence.

Actually, the very first thing I said to my wife when I met her in person for the first time was “Well, you’re not 300 lbs and ugly as a mud fence.” in response to her question on what I thought about her looks. Fortunately for me, she didn’t quite get the reference.

Just my opinion...

I think banning someone should be a temporary thing. Isn’t there some sort of a process to it?
What about a three strikes rule: Get warned, then if you persist you get banned for a month. After that you get one last chance and if you get caught doing the same sort of thing again, then the ban becomes permanent.

I know it was probably a lot harder to police the site when it was just Dave and Ben, but now with the moderators, I would think this sort of detailed oversight might be possible.

Yeah, it was an uneducated opinion as I'm not any sort of insider on this board.

Just thought I’d throw it out there.

Sign, don’t sign.

It’s hard to decide without knowing why he got banned, and no doubt I’ve missed most of the heated debates.
So I’m going on my own experience.
AK1984 was always sharp, and had insight that now and then came with barbs. Sometimes obnoxious, cantankerous, and ornery like grandpa, but I don’t ever remember (me personally) being attacked. To me he was a welcome adversary (should also say he was not always an adversary). And, he even won me over to his side a couple times.
How many of us like to interact with people who only say what they think we want to hear. Not me.
If he makes peace with whomever/whatever he did, and comes to an agreement to curtail/stop whatever it was that got him banned,
Sign me up, I always liked grandpa – blazer1342

Let's just hypothesize he got banned for a persistent condescending tone to other posters combined with a flagrant episode of name calling.

That’s probably pretty close to the mark.

by timbo on Feb 27, 2010 7:39 AM PST up reply actions

And then the questions come

How often was he warned (and ignored the warnings) about the condescension?

How bad was the flagrant episode?

Some things should bring permanent consequences, after all. If he ignored warnings, you expect the consequences, that’s life. If the flagrant episode is flagrant enough, you have to pay the penalty. That’s life.

People lose jobs over these things, lose friends, have their families break up, etc, etc. If they learn the lesson with no worse consequences than being banned from a sports blog, that’s probably a good thing. Far better to learn it that way than suffering much more serious consequences.

I’m not saying the ban should hold, because I don’t know (or need to know, really) the specifics of what brought it on. I’m just saying that permanent bans have their proper place.

I have to make do with remembering the ones she gave when she was here.

Bottom line, I’m content with whatever decision Dave/the mods makes.

I’m sure they will have to be convinced that he’s willing to conform to the site rules before lifting the ban.
But if we also hypothesize that he is able/willing to conform and do the right thing, why not give him a chance. I would say the same for anyone.
But like jscot said, some things have permanent consequences. Is this one of those things, I have no idea, I’ll leave it to those who run the site.

Yeah, I tend to trust the moderators who have got us this far. I sure don't know the details.

My main gripe with AK was that it was questionable that he was a Blazer fan.
Seemed like he just wanted to talk Ball with no personal allegiance to the team or anyone on it.
He could be caustic, but I was thinking he might be cleaning that up due to theoretical warnings.
I liked his position on JVG though.
AK at least needs one friend here to have the facts if an appeal is justified. I don’t know.
I would like to see fatty back. I thought he was a Blazer fan anyway. But, I probably don’t know the worst of it.

Dave wouldn't ban somebody because of their opinion of the team.

There are many people here who don’t see eye to eye on many points about the team. The difference is they don’t talk down to people when arguing points.

I seem to recall

on one occasion AK accusing everyone on the site of wearing rose red colored glasses to which he received a much glamorized reminder from Tom about this being a Blazers site.

No thank you

The #1 thing about that guy I remember is his sig quote, “Fire McMillan, fire Pritchard” or whatever. golf clap outstanding analysis there, sir, clearly the voice of reason. I don’t care how knowledgeable he was about hoops, take that antagonistic nonsense over to RealGM.

In fact for weeks I thought he was an interloper from some other site that just cruised by to troll every so often, until I realized after some time that there was no “other site”, he just trolled around here full-time. Writing eloquently and clearly != having something constructive or original to say. Increasingly it just seemed like a game to see how much he could criticize and denigrate the Blazers roster and staff and still get away with calling himself a Blazers fan at the same time.

There’s plenty of criticism of Nate/KP/players still here from all of us without him gone, so I don’t think in any way that this was kicking out someone for not worshipping the team or anything. The difference is we do that stuff in context and we don’t come off as shrill one-note tirades, which is how all of his posts came across, to the point that I just scrolled past em. The only way that dude should come back is if he’s accompanied by an ignore feature.

Rather than overturning the ban on AK ...

… how about a petition to ban timbo?

I think he’s the one who bribed one of the moderators in an attempt to get rid of me. He wants sole rights to the “tim” franchise. There can only be one.

So...if people can give Blount, Vick, et al a second chance

why can’t AK get another chance? He didn’t disgrace his university on national tv by punching an opponent, nor did he engage in any illegal dogfighting, yet he is going to get banned from a website?

I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.
