could 3 superstars on 1 team happen?
preface: something like this might already exist in here, but I'd like to start a section callled "beyond the blazers" where you just put BB before your post or shot. I love the blazers, but more so I love basketball. anyway on with the post...
i think it might be more of a possibility than it might seem from surface. The article in the link talks about how they might just do it for the dynasty or do it for the championships...historically this hasn't truly been @ the top of any player's priorities. The Elite guys want their max deals, no ifs, ands, or buts. Here's the thing that has the CHANCE to change the game this time. There are a few places where 3 of the elites could go and still make big salaries, because obviously bron bron wouldn't sign for the mid-level exception with the lakers to play with kobe and win 4 or 5 straight. So this unique circumstance of a few teams being able to offer 8 figures to 3 guys @ the same time matters. What could come into play for these guys is the idea that they could make themselves a 3 man package and in turn earn themselves a significant amount MORE in endorsements. If these guys all go to miami, or new york, or maybe even chicago...they could do it....imagine the money to be made for a team that could win 70 games/year for 4 or 5 years
here's the list of possibles for this summer- obviously kobe and dirk are extreme longshots to leave their teams-it could happen. and im a gambler
joe johnson
paul pierce (eto)
lebron
dirk (eto)
kobe (player)
rudy gay (restricted)
d wade (player)
david lee
amare (eto)
bosh (p)
boozer
I'd say there's 3 levels here and to guarantee a championship you'd need @ least 1 guy from the top level and not have your 2 other guys be in the 3rd level, but otherwise you're golden (golden = min. 4 championships no matter if your other starting 2 are darko and kwame brown) The following are my borderline arbitrary levels
level 1 bron,wade
level 2 kobe (level 2 just because of the miles on his legs),bosh, dirk
level 3 joe johnson, amare, boozer, david lee, rudy gay, paul pierce
I'm just thinking, bron and wade are businessmen-I'm sure they see this angle- which would be the ONLY reason it could be a possibility. The egos though....the egos could end something great before it has a chance to exist.
happy thursday basketball fans

there is not enough room in an arena for 3 superstar's egos....
This is how I think the summer will turn out……
joe johnson- staying w/ Hawks
paul pierce- staying w/ Celtics
lebron- staying w/ Cleveland
dirk- staying w/ Dallas
kobe- staying w/ LA
rudy gay- staying w/ Memphis
d wade- leaving Miami
david lee- 50/50
amare- 50/50
bosh- leaving Toronto
boozer- 50/50
I have a feeling that DWade is going to end up in Chicago.
Now, if Dwade and Bosh got together and went to Chicago, that would be a crazy good team: Rose/Wade/Deng/Bosh/Noah
But I think Boozer would be a better fit with DWade in Chicago because both Bosh and Wade want to be the #1 guy on their team.
So many combinations, too little time….
In the end, I just don’t see 2 ‘superstars’ who are the #1 option on their respective teams right now joining forces. Too much ego.
Also Malone and Payton
In 2003-2004, the Lakers had FOUR superstars:
Kobe
Shaq
Karl Malone
Gary Payton
Technically Malone and Payton were getting old, but they still had their egos.
It almost worked, they lost in the NBA Finals to Detroit.

yeah, they had superstar egos, but no longer had their superstar talent

I see you already caught it, but I reiterate, Payton/Malone NOT superstars.
In Bayless I trust.

Payton was washed up - Malone is what made that team special
I think they would’ve cruised to the title if he was healthy.
When they were all healthy, they were DESTROYING the competition. I distinctly remember the Thanksgiving game against the defending champ Spurs, and the Lakers absolutely wiped them off the court. Malone’s time with Stockton definitely rubbed off – he was a great passing big man late in his career.
I still hated them though.
Holding out for Hedo
Disagree on a few
Joe Johnson – Hawks or NY 50/50 chance
Rudy Gay is not staying with Memphis they will not pay to keep him (I could see him in NY)
D Wade – Stays in Miami and they get another star there, D wade will see more money and better weather in Miami
Boozer – Leaves Utah probally to Miami if Bosh doesn’t go there first

Also Rudy will go to Memphis and Conley will come to Portland

Joe Johnson to Chicago. They will have a deadly front court
Its delightful, its delicious, its delug
Some superstar-quality trios from the past:
Magic, Kareem, Worthy
Wilt, West, Baylor
Bird, McHale, Parish
Russell, Havlicek, Sam Jones
Jordan, Pippen, Rodman
Olajuwon, Drexler, Barkley

Those above who were not superstars or were not at that level on the team because of age or injury:
Worthy
McHale
Parish
Rodman
Drexler
Barkley
etc.

i remember a jordan interview where he said rodman was the best defensive player he had ever seen
a superstar doesn’t have to be an offensive player
'86 celtics
definitely had 3 superstars – bird, parish, mchale
none of their players were past their prime at that point bird was 29, mchale 28 and parish 32. they all played every game of the playoffs and were largely injury free that year.
rodman was also outstanding in ‘96 and ’98. definitely a superstar defensively and in terms of rebounding. he led the entire league one of those years and in another was 2nd to only david robinson. he wasn’t an offensive guy but he was a star no doubt.
Gay is out of there. He wants to get paid. he will go to the clippers or new york.

Two years ago, sure.
Garnett is washed up now. Allen isn’t having a very good year, and frankly none of those guys are as valuable to the franchise at this point as Rondo.
Holding out for Hedo
Rondo is their man, now...
Garnett is a shadow of his former self but he’s not quite washed up yet.
Either way the Celtics won’t be much of anything until they turn over all the old gues
you need a big man and a star wing
all 3 of the big guns this summer (lebron, wade, bosh) will NOT end up on the same team, despite what the article on ESPN today discusses…book it, it’s not going to happen…you really think Lebron is going to leave $30M on the table in Cleveland to go play with those guys somewhere, no way
you have to have a wing that can create his shot anytime and score, and a big man that can score from the post and draw a double team – it’s the formula that has won the last decade of NBA titles
I don’t think Lebron and Wade going to the same team would be effective…but either of those 2 guys and Bosh would be.
in response to the first post:
joe johnson- staying w/ Hawks (not necessarily…you could see him end up in CHI, NY, or NJ if they don’t a top 3 guy)
paul pierce- staying w/ Celtics (yup, Celtic for life)
lebron- staying w/ Cleveland (don’t be so sure..Lebron has goals outside of ball that would be better served in NY or Miami)
dirk- staying w/ Dallas (yup)
kobe- staying w/ LA (yup)
rudy gay- staying w/ Memphis (no, he’ll get a big offer from NJ, LAC, or another team that misses out on the big 3)
d wade- leaving Miami (maybe not…CHI is going to make a STRONG pitch, and they have a nice young core)
david lee- 50/50 (he’s going to be back, he’s their best player and if they don’t get their big 2 guys he’ll re-sign)
amare- 50/50 (he’ll opt in for next year and take that $17M, then hit the market the next year with less competition)
bosh- leaving Toronto (I agree – he’ll pair up with Wade, or the dark horse is OKC, imagine them with Bosh…jesus)
boozer- 50/50 (Jazz are either going to trade him or Millsap, I think he ends up in Chicago with Wade possibly)

I think the only reason that there is any disagreement on this thread is due to different definitions of Superstar.
…and good luck coming up with a definition that everyone will agree with.

It would be abolutely ....
BORING. like following the GlobeTrotters to see if they will manage to defeat the Washington Generals, yet another time. Isn’t the steady diet of LeBron vs. Kobe vs. DWade on national TV nauseating enough? I guess it would devolve into having to watch the LeBron/Kobe/DWade superteam scrimmage against their second team on national TV rather than risk showing some small market teams play. I shudder to imagine what it would be like listening to Marv Albert or the TNT toadies falling over each other to rave about this superteam.
is Roy a lvl 1 2 or 3 and where would la fall
id say roy is a 2, im not sure aldridge is even a 3 as most of those guys mentioned are allstars. makes you say hmmmmmm.
