Rudy heading back to Spain?
Spanish newspaper Marca reports Real Madrid is trying to get Rudy for the next year. Marca says that Rudy is not comfortable in portland with reduced playing time and he could make more money back in Spain.
http://www.marca.com/2010/02/24/baloncesto/acb/1267001380.html
Is this likely to happen? I don't think so, but, if this is a possibility I think Portland should really think in a trade this summer to get some value back from Rudy.

Are you saying Marca is the Al Jazeera of Spain?
Not that either of those aren’t worse than the American News Networks. I miss real journalism.
Wearing the black band for Jarrett Jack, Ime Udoka, Fred Jones, Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Luke Schenscher, Shavlik Randolph, James Jones, Josh McRoberts, Steven Hill, Jarron Collins, Michael Ruffin, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. Sacrificed to the unmerciful god of progress.
It is!

I concur
It is amazing how much better news coverage is in other parts of the world than it is in the US. I have read more complete coverage of US news events in newpapers in India than you get in the Oregonian.
I concur as well FT.com is the gold standard for US news from the London Financial Times
In the US the WSJ is usually very good on selected topics. NY Times and Washington Post have slid very badly over the past two decades.
Perhaps the British see things more clearly because they do not have a pony in the race. FT.com provides expertise in the economic slant of politics as well as the hard news.

I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't happy.

Wellllllllllllll
Either way he’s under contract for two more years after this season. And a Euro team can’t steal him away while he’s under a NBA contract.
He could be bought out of a contract by us, but I don’t think it’s likely right now.
It makes sense for Rudy to be unhappy with his poor play and sporadic minutes, but he’ll likely turn it around. With his injury and surgery, the wacky hijinks of this season for the entire team, everyone is all messed up in the head.

Rudy wants to prove he is an impact player in the NBA
hard to do that in Spain… the guy seems like too much of a competitor to leave the league when he’s at a low point in his career arc. Out of Portland to another NBA team? Yeah, I’ll buy that. Out of Portland to return back home? Don’t see it.

How can Rudy improve when Miller won't throw him the ball?
by tominhawaii on Feb 24, 2010 10:51 AM PST up reply actions
Rudy's usage is up from last year
So he’s actually getting the ball more than last year. His turovers have ballooned and his shooting numbers have dropped, so Nate has (wisely) stopped calling as many plays for him to handle the ball.
Last year a higher percentage of shots seemed to come uncontested. With the lack of post scoring we are either getting easier buckets in transition or having to shoot highly contested shots in the half-court.

Marca isn't totally reliable
Plus his contract is guaranteed thru 2011 in the NBA so he can’t go back next season. Even if he were to decide he wasn’t coming back at all next season … he’d probably lose a lot of money due to breaking his contract and FIBA rules wouldn’t allow him to play there until the following season because he still has a contract with the NBA.
I could see him wanting to go back to Spain at some point but not yet … now it would be like throwing away the last season and a half here and giving up. That just doesn’t make sense!
It´s real.
The original interview is here. Tough pill to swallow, but you could see it even from afar.
I was going to translate it but it´s now at http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm
He just wants to play
That says it all. It’s not that he wants to leave the NBA, or even Portland, he just wants to play.
Give Blake the MLE in 2010!
Farewell to #2 and #25, good luck to you!
#7 #10 #52 -- #5 & #88 are back!
Warning: HE DIDNT SAY THAT
Im from Madrid myself and I can tell you Marca is pro-Real Madrid anyday all day.
What he actually said: “Ahora mismo, y en esta situación, no descarto nada. Lo único que quiero es jugar y me puede dar igual dónde sea”
Meaning: “Right now, and in this situation, I’m keeping my options open. The only thing I want to do is play and I dont care where I do it”
He never mentioned anything about Europe, Marca just took that phrase and converted it into saying he wants to play for Real Madrid. He did mention that this year he feel lost in the system and given a lot lets trust, but that he has to learn how to deal with it and be more consistent.
Its actually a very fair and level headed assessment from him.

I think there´s much more behind these words.
At one point Rudy was the only Blazers who hadn´t started in a single game. Blake and Bayless passed in front of him. I think it´s not a coincidence that Rudy explodes the same day Sergio starts for New York and has a very good game.
Agreed
Rudy went from being the #2 SG (in his mind and that of the fans) to, apparently to Nate, #4 or #5 in terms of starting options. I don’t blame him for being miffed

yep
at various times this year we started at shooting guard both Blake (the early 3 guard lineup) and Bayless (the Roy injury) over Rudy.

But Rudy's played terrible this year
I think the Blazers, as much as I didn’t think it would happen, miss Sergio. He may have been a crappy defender and sporadic, but he also was the spark plug that could play great and lead the second unit to some exciting scores. It was hard for Sergio to lose a game, in his role, but he could certainly win a game. The second unit brought us back many times last year, after the starters bombed. And he kept Rudy happy and prosperous.
How many of those alley oops has Rudy had this year?
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Rudy's potential
I think it’s fantastic that Bayless finally got some run earlier in the season. He got the chance to show what he can provide… which at this point looks to me like energy off the bench. Bayless is now being used appropriately in my opinion, and that gives him both confidence as well as an idea of what he needs to work on in the off-season.
Is it not past time to give Fernandez the same opportunity? I appreciate that his shot has been inconsistent, but at 5 minutes and three shots per game he has to be wondering (as am I) if he wouldn’t be playing stronger at 30 minutes. He very well may be too small for the NBA, but on the other hand he may have the makings of a solid starter. Isn’t it about time that we find out just what he’s capable of?
there's a difference b/t those two
Bayless is an aggressive player who’s still on the learning curve and getting better. He creates his own shot,a nd he was starting to learn to create for others some. He also plays two positions, so that makes it a little easier to find minutes for him, especially when someone in the back court is injured. He also plays better D, imho.
Rudy is a perimeter scorer who gets fouled by flopping. That’s it. Sometimes he creates his own shot, sometimes he doesn’t, and he never creates for others. He moves well in between the passing lanes, but most of his defense is pure crap. And the only position he can really play and not be a total liability is the same position as BRoy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rudy; he’s a great athlete, but I don’t see the case for giving him minutes at the expense of Bayless or the SF’s.
I think Rudy needs to realize
That this season its weird for everybody involved, so he has to get over his problems and just get this season over with so that they can start thinking about next year.
I agree that he might not be the best player for Nates style of play, but hes still capable of contributing nonetheless
Re a buyout
I don’t think it’s at all likely, but it’s an interesting question to think about.
To begin w/there’s no limit a Euro-League team can contribute to a buy-out,so the actual amount is pretty insignificant. (And per Larry Coons, there’s not a $500,000 limit on NBA clubs ability to contribute to a buy-out. It’s just that every penny over that counts towards cap.)
Then there’s the matter of Rudy being on a Rookie First Rd contract. Only the first 2 yrs are fully guaranteed. The next 2 are team options and the final yr is a qualifying offer. I would imagine the Blazers could excercise their team options in advance for the next 2 yrs in order to get some value from Rudy if he wanted to go home, but the salary that was bought out would apply to cap. In the unlikeliest of events Rudy did want to go home,I’d imagine the Blazers would only excercise the coming yr’s option, take the cash and suffer the embarrassment.(Taking the option if for no other reason than to prevent him from signing as FA w/another NBA team.)
they already exercised their option on year 3 (2010-11)
which they had to do by October 31. They will definitely without a doubt exercise their option for year 4 as well.
If Rudy puts the pressure on Portland to trade him or let him be bought out, they are going to be faced with the choice of holding firm, and risking alienating future players and agents, or caving in and letting him go. Neither is ideal.

No, Rudy isn't complaining like Sergio

Even with injuries, Rudy HAS gotten playing time and really hasn't produced!
If he wants to play more, he needs to do more than get hot from 3 point range every 3rd or 4th game! He needs to play D. He needs to learn to score in other ways. (driving to the rack?) He needs to be involved with the offense even when the 3 isn’t falling. If his whole game is the 3, he will never amount to more than he is right now in the NBA. I keep hearing about his fantastic play in international play, but haven’t seen it for myself. I realize it’s a different game in the NBA, but he needs to be more than an outside shooter who is either red-hot or ice-cold!
Rudy needs to hit that open 3 if he wants more playing time,
and Nate needs to stop yanking players the second they make a mistake. This year is not an awesome situation for Rudy, but think he will be happy again once he and the rest of the team start playing a little better….or Rudy gets traded this off-season and he no longer has to deal with Nate as his coach.

yep
we have to pick our guys, move the rest, and roll with the 8 to 9 we want. fill out the roster with young guys like Dante and Jeff and/or older vets like Howard.
PG – Miller, ?
SG – Roy, Rudy OR Bayless
SF – Batum, Webster
PF – LMA
C – Greg, Joel OR Camby
Looks to me like we need to pick between Rudy and Bayless and between Joel or Camby, and somehow figure out who our next point guard is going to be. Then roll those 9 guys out there night in and night out with the same minutes and rotation on a consistent basis.
You want guys to produce consistently, they have to be able to settle into a defined role, know they aren’t going to get jerked around, and don’t have to play in fear of making a mistake. I am more convinced of this now than ever before.

Perspective and reality vs. spin
1. Thanks for the accuracy of Rudy’s words rather than what a Spanish newspaper makes of them for their own purposes.
2. Coach Mac has absolutely messed with minutes and roles out of “necessity” due to injuries and trying to win games. His theory of a full, balanced, second unit (instead of the starters and the 3-4 backups) is bizarre—good for hockey, not hoops.
3. Rudy can shoot from anywhere, not just outside. Expecting him to get a good shot after the ball is dumped to him on the outside with 5 seconds left on the 24 isn’t very smart … by others. He’s a feet set 3 pt shooter, not the fling it up kind out of necessity.
4. His passing is light years beyond Bayless, especially when he’s on the move. He’s outstanding in fast break situations—with or without the ball. He’s unselfish. He has a motor and uses it.
5. He has weaknesses, but it’s not in the area of effort.
6. Mr. Allen and KP are absolutely in Rudy’s corner as a keeper. That’s the word from multiple sources. Nate needs to get the memo.
Your depiction of 2 balanced units as "bizarre - good for hocky, not hoops" ignores Jack Ramsey's Championship year
Which was precisely what they achieved. The reason it is rare today is the lack of depth most teams suffer from and the decline of teamwork. A unit that practices together and plays together can become precise and very hard to guard or drive against.
"The one thing we said about this team right away is they mirror what their coach's personality is and that's to be hard-nosed and play extremely hard and play with intensity." - Alvin Gentry
actually he can't "Shoot from anywhere"
He is good at the rim, OK within 10 feet, abysmal between 10-23 feet and good from 3.
Rudy shoots 30% on mid-range shots and 25% on long twos this season, last season he was even worse! Last season Rudy shot 72% at the rim and the 18%(!), 23%, and 29% in the <10 ft, 10-16 ft, 16-23ft (long twos) respectively.
So far in the NBA Rudy has shown the ability to finish around the rim (especially lobs) if there isn’t too much contact and he can bomb away from 3 where he can get pretty hot on occasion. Rudy has shown a complete lack of a midrange game.

18 pts for Sergio as a Knick last night...
Rudy’s looking at that stat thinking ‘18 for him? imagine if i played there!’
Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
Doesn't seem like Rudy fits with the team long term.
As long as the Blazers have Brandon, which I hope is a very long time, Rudy will be unhappy in Portland. I was surprised he didn’t get a chance to start when BRoy was injured, but I think that was because Nate realizes Rudy’s limitations. If he had even descent handles, Rudy would see a lot more playing time.
As it is, both Nate and I cringe every time Rudy puts the ball on the floor. On this team, his contribution should be as a spot up shooter primarily, like last season, especially since Blake is gone now. And even though (and because) I like Rudy, I think he should be traded to a team that runs more, for a more solid role player.
winning cures a multitude of sorrows
It’s no surprise considering how this season has gone that guy’s molehills get turned into mountains. Next season with everybody healthy this team is going to crank out the wins and with it all these little gripes will go away.
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
If Rudy was going to stick he was supposed to be the starter next to Roy- this year. He is just as good if not a better three shooter than Blake. His defense, if he worked on it and nutted up every game, should be just as good if not better as well. Running the break and occasional drives he should be much better than Blake. But Nate did not see that.
