offensive scheme

Broy’s a great player and I’m glad he’s back, but the rest of the Blazers play worse when he’s on the floor. Too much of the offense is give the ball to Broy and let him work. That’s a bad offensive scheme. Before Broy came in at the end of the 2nd quarter the ball was moving and everyone was an offensive threat – then Brandon came in. There is still a lot of talent on the Blazers, but we end up a one-dimensional or on occasion a two-dimensional team (Aldridge). The thing is, this even makes scoring harder for Roy; he has to force shots over defenders because everyone knows where the ball is going.

I couldn't agree more.

The offense stagnates sometimes because he needs the ball for a long time to be effective – not really a catch-and-shoot dude.

He’s a great player though.

by Cablinasian on Feb 24, 2010 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

Still

there is a sense that the other players defer to him and look to get him the ball no matter what. I don’t think the offense flows smoothly through him. When he’s on, it’s good he gets the ball, but the other players do a lot of standing around.

by torsoheap on Feb 24, 2010 5:19 PM PST up reply actions

Offense

You’re doing it wrong!

"I was surprised, I was listening to the coach on the bench and behind me, she touches me and says, ‘Rudy, I love you. Nice to meet you. Good game.’ - Rudy

by The Mallorcan Rocket on Feb 24, 2010 5:23 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I disagree with this

When he’s at his sharpest, Roy doesn’t need the ball long to be effective. He catches the ball, at which point he’ll immediately shoot, drive, pass or post. He puts pressure on his defense the whole time.

Only the last couple games his decision-making has been a bit slow and deferential, which allows the defense to adjust and smother us. I think part of this is rust.

Although as Cabby says, there is more than a small element of schematic weakness there.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 5:20 PM PST up reply actions

The key is

“when he’s at his sharpest.” That’s cool, but what happens when he’s off? He still “demands” the ball so it’s hard for other dudes to pick up the slack.

by torsoheap on Feb 24, 2010 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

true

but he’s got to be at his sharpest for us to succeed in the playoffs, so I wouldn’t worry too much about his poor form hurting the team.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not really disagreeing with you.

Portland/Nate seems set on running a certain offense no matter who’s on. If Roy’s on, get him the ball every time down, but if he’s not, use him as a decoy.

I’ve been saying for a while, the Blazers have better flow without him. I know I’m crazy because he’s a great player, but he doesn’t make his teammates better.

he is good, but is bad for the team

Rudy musta read Ben’s article today….

It'll give them time to regain the lead

against Boston they gave it up too late and couldn’t get going in overtime. Against the Nets they gave it up earlier but there was still a point with a few minutes left if they got a few stops they could have won. Now even if they get the lead there’s still tons of time for us to ebb and flow back.

There was one possession where they were fronting him and he didn’t get the ball, then the next time down he got it in the post, held it, then passed without making a move. He either got discouraged from the first play or after he caught it started overthinking or whatever makes him pass without attacking in the 2nd half.

Of course, NBA dudes take hard fouls. It would be tough to shoot free throws after getting Shaq-attacked.

Most middle school kids don't shoot 80% from the line

Besides, it’s different in front of a big crowd while tired.

College kids are much worse at FT shooting on the whole than NBA players are, and while that sounds obvious… shooting 80%~ as a team is real good.

The best way to judge it is rebounding percentage. LMA is not a strong rebounder but he’s got a better percentage than ever.

For example

Nene is 13.6% overall rebounding.

I’m doing good, thanks for asking.

Yes, the plus/minus in one game NEVER EVER lies. It’s always completely accurate. Huge sample size.

Bayless played well

Millers performance goes under the radar

Roy did good given that the Raps spent a whole practice figuring out how to stop him

LMA was meh, but so was Bargs.

We needed Camby tonight, especially with the rebounds

oh and Mortimer is a noob

im out peace

I would be focusing on getting Rudy and Batum minutes (unless I'm trading Rudy obviously)

if that means Jerryd and Martell get screwed, so be it. Its time to pick some guys (hopefully the right ones, defined as the ones I think are best) and stick with them instead of doing Nate’s specialty, jerking them around and killing their confidence.

i agree with this

If you add Martell’s 8 and Batum’s 19, you have exactly the correct PT for a solid bench player. No need to split that.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 6:47 PM PST up reply actions

A lot of coaches jerk players around.

It’s not really Nate’s specialty.

Batum brings the doom.

fair enough, Nellie is probably the master

Nate is awfully good at it though.

Larry Brown too, right?

and Sloan also seems to have a rotating doghouse.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 6:50 PM PST up reply actions

the key is to give them no choice

If one of Denver’s rotation players gets hurt, Karl’s choices are Anthony Carter and Malik Allen.

He really has no choice but to stick with JR Smith or Ty Lawson or Birdman.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 6:49 PM PST up reply actions

it's true, though I think this is one of the harder elements of coaching

We all want to “freeze out” Martell right now, but if Rudy reverts to his form over the last 3 weeks, we’d all want him back. The key is to have someone who can fill those supporting roles but acknowledges his limitations and doesn’t need further development—then they just have to be happy sitting on the bench.

Unfortunately, the coach’s incentives are all geared toward instant gratification, while the GM is working towards building something larger. So while management sees Rudy as a guy that needs to see a bunch of floor time, Nate says “I can’t afford that—I need to win.” The incentives are a mess.

by atomiccafe on Feb 24, 2010 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

couldn't agree more

pick your guys, and put your confidence in them. don’t jerk them around if they have a bad stint. go right back to them.

Let's hold off on high praise for Rudy

until he strings a few of these solid games together. He had some ticky tac fouls but offensively, he was in a rhythm. Hope to see him keep it up.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
