Perfectly timed trade proposal or...

Bad attempt at saracsm? Whatup Blazers fans, I have a trade propsal idea that I wanted to discuss with Blazers fans. Here it is:

Darren Collison, Peja, first round pick swap (assuming Hornets have a worse record than the Blazers) and cash for

Rudy, Martell, and Andre Miller.

I really think a Rudy for Darren deal makes alot of sense for both teams. You have two very talented, starting caliber players who just happen to backup better players in front of them. Darren has been a beast for us in CP's absence, and while Rdy has had a dissapointing season, everyone knows there is great potential there for an all around good player (especially when considering his improved d this year, and the fact that his 3 point shot will probably come bacl). I also think that inconsistant minutes have affected his play. Actually, when looking at per minute stats, Darren shows much of the same problem. He has played much better in the starter's role than in the bench role. I think the same could be said for Rudy.

Additonally both Collison's game, and Rudy's game would fit their new teammates like a glove. DC is gettign used to the nba 3 line, but his shot has been hitting as of late. He is capable of playing both up tempo and slow. Also he would be the best defender Portland has had at the point since Jack. UCLA really teaches those kids how to play d (Afflalo, Luc-Richard etc.)

As for Rudy, his jumper would space the floor for cp, and paul's court vision would set Rudy up for both open shots off of curls, and alley-oops and layups off of back-door cuts.

The Peja move gives you an expiring contract, and do over from the Andre Miller mistake. Martell is an adequate young starter who can play some D and hit the open three which is all we need from that spot. You guys prefer Batum anyway, and this gives you a pick for your trouble.

The Hornets then trade David West for Jason Thompson and cap space and give CP a young skilled fast team to compete with.

What are your thoughts? Am I over valuing Collison or your willingness to get rid of Andre? Let me know. Thanks and I'm looking forward to the battle for that 8th spot. Good luck guys.

Bleh.

I definitely think we need to make a trade to get the future of the PG position solidified but I’m not feeling this trade at all. Pretty nicely thought out though.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Andre was not a mistake

an expiring isn’t gonna help us. and lets be real, a rook, a crappy geezer and a pick switch for 2 young studs and one of the top 7 point guards in the league?

by RUDYYYY on Feb 22, 2010 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

I think most of us here are going to say no.

Partly because there’s a lot of Rudy love, but mostly becuase none of us really know Collisons game yet.

Your assessment of rudy is spot on though. As much as we love him, he plays behind Roy.

I'd look into this...

I LOVED Collison and wanted us to draft him… And still like him over Bayless.

Way overvaluing Collison right here...

And I really don’t think the Blazers want Peja’s contract

How many triple doubles do Rudy or Martell have?

I doubt we’d give up that much for him, but he’s pretty dang good.

from here on out I will only agree to trades that get us Conley...

I think you're overvaluing Rudy

though Martell and Dre would be a little much to give up for an EC and Collison.

by HailOden! on Feb 22, 2010 8:52 PM PST reply actions

not quite

the rudy-collison comparison is good and their values are comparable, but webster and miller for peja is like trading two ipod shuffles for a deluxe discman. no.

Maybe just Rudy for Collison

That one is a head-scratcher. But I don’t get why the other pieces should be included. Adding cash is useless to Paul Allen. A pick swap sounds ok, but doesn’t NO want young talent this summer way more than Portland does? And what would NO do with Andre Miller?

I suppose in the summer, when this wouldn’t be a huge disruption to a fragile Blazers roster, this trade might make more sense. Peja is a huge expiring contract, that might be more useful in a three way that brings an A-lister to Portland. Until then, we’ll be watching Miller to see if he is the short term answer at PG, and Bayless to see if he is the long term answer. Maybe Collison would be better.

How about 3 for 3

David West, Peja and Darren Collison for Rudy, Martel and GO

or CP3 for Brandon and Miller.. I love this trade….

I'd consider this trade only if they included

Marcus Thornton. Otherwise NO! Peja’s contract is just too much.

by VinnyB on Feb 23, 2010 4:46 AM PST reply actions

Thanks for the input guys.

Honestly the Peja for Andre and Martell part of this deal is just ancillary.

It seems most folks have the biggest issue with that part of the trade. My interest in including that part of the deal was just to get us a good backup point guard and a decent defender who can shoot the three. I thought more folks would be amenable to it because Peja is an expiring who could be coupled with picks to get a good player, and neither Martell no Andre really fit into your long term plans as starters. It seems from the outside that most folks prefer Batum, and that Roy is still not comfortable with Andre at the point. I think you guys need a defender/ 3 point shooter first (Darren is still working on that part of his game but it usually takes college guys a year or so to get used to the pro line) and a secondary shot and assist creator second. DC is more suited to those roles than a guy who has been a high usage point guard like andre, who also isn’t a great defender or 3 point shooter.

From the Hornet’s end, we are in a bad cap situation which will require us to either trade David West for a prospect and cap space, or trade MoPete and our pick for cap space. Assuming that the luxury tax cap is at 65 mill, we have to cut 7 million, and add at least 3 players which means we really have to cut 10 mill. Trading Peja gives us 2 players for the price of one. Honestly, it’s a waste of Andre Miller’s talent to be backup, and it may cause some friction wit hthe team which might not even be worth it.

But anyway, I’d be completely comfortable with just Rudy for DC straight up.

Also what about Marcus Thornton for Bayless (just wondering)?

Replace Rudy with Bayless in this trade and I would approve.

Two comments about Bayless for DC...

Why would the Hornets do this? It makes no sense for us. We trade a point who has been very productive in the starting role for a player with more potential. The problem is we trade trade a bench guy for another bench guy, and you trade a bench guy for a starter. No I don’t think he is right now better than Andre, yes I think he still would start becuase he could fit better with Roy (because of defense). I truly think that Rudy for DC makes both teams better. Does anyone really think Bayless for DC is a fair swap? Not all trades have to be a zero sum game. We both trade bench players for starters. Everybody wins.
