Why CAN'T this team go all the way?

At the beginning of the season people were saying that the blazers could go all the way.  We had a bunch of injuries, and alot of folks kinda gave up on the season.  But I ask you this now... why couldn't we go all the way?  Camby gives us the kind of rebounding and shot blocking that Greg and/or Joel provided before plus he can score a little too.  Sure he isn't quite the beast that Greg is, but it probably means he fouls less and as many have pointed out...his BBIQ is off the charts.  Whereas Greg still has alot to learn.

Other than Greg and Joel, what are we now missing?  What piece did we have, that we now dont that would've helped in the playoffs?  I know Brandon isn't 100%.  But maybe...just maybe with the veteran savvy that has been added this season this is currently a better team, than what could have been.

I know its a long shot.  A REALLY long shot, but I have no doubt that this current team is capable of making some serious noise in the playoffs this year.

If you are Marcus Camby....  You are probably looking at this is quite possibly your last shot at a deep playoff run.  If he goes after the money next year, none of the contenders will pony up.  He's already basically said he loves this place, and its been three days.

I think in a 7 game series the current lineup beats last years lineup, and probably Houston.

Just hoping outloud...

Completely agree!

Although a first round sweep isn’t that far fetched either. Lots of variables and inconsistecies, but … I would give the Blazers a fair chance against any team in the West right now (assuming Roy can be effective).

Or we could raise our expectations to an unreasonably high level..

And then be angry when we fail to achieve said expectations. But then again, its kinda nice to have a little bit of hope for some playoff success this year.

all signs point to him fitting in quite nicely

He definitely fits in culture-wise.

Of course the crucial question will be how he fits in with the team on the court.

At the very least he’ll make Aldridge more effective. As for the other guys, we’ll see.

I don't worry about Camby fitting in...

I worry about Roy getting healthy. Without him there is no knowing what will happen to this team over the last 26 games…

not gonna happen

But winning a playoff series is attainable if things break right. That would be very satisfying for us fans, all things considered, and a great stepping stone for what is still a very young and developing team.

I think some people forget how green our guys are, aside from the 3 old-timers. In the lengthy NBA playoffs there are rarely “magical runs” by cinderella-type squads (for a series maybe, but not thru the playoffs) – it’s all about seasoning, cohesion, experience, etc…

even though its unlikely

dont be negative. i set my goal for this team every year to win a championship, whether its likely or not. because you most you can achieve is your highest expectation. so if we lower our standards to making the playoffs and being happy with that, then we aint makin it past the first round. its a mental thing even more so than Brandon’s injury, so my goal for the team is STILL to win a title THIS season.

by 64-18 on Feb 19, 2010 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong

I want and hope for a Blazers title every year, especially this one. But all four teams I mentioned, plus a few that I didn’t (like the one we play tonight) are vastly better than us and would trounce us in a seven game series. I’m not trying to be negative, just realistic. It’s not the end of the world if we get beaten by a better team in the playoffs. I will root just as hard next year for my beloved Blazers.

Plus, it doesn’t matter if I lower my standards since I don’t play basketball and have no bearing on the team’s performance. It’s sort of like in the movie “Fever Pitch” when Jimmy Fallon told Drew Barrymore how he went down to Red Sox Spring Training every year in Florida to cheer on the Sox and tell the team what they should do. She asked him, “Do they listen to you?” He said, “Well, no, but….” You get the picture.

I would substitute Orlando for the Jazz as one of the four reasons. To me those are the only four teams that are still CLEARLY better than Portland. Others may be better as well but those are the only four that stand out in my book. We are competitive with the Jazz when we have an interior presence.

by BlazingTheTrail on Feb 19, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

What exactly would Greg bring that Camby cant, this season?

Obviously, Greg is a much better scorer, but the reason you believe Greg is a game changer is because he anchors your defense and own the glass. I doubt Camby is much of a downgrade to Greg in that regard. The blazers aren’t having problems putting the ball in the hoop, they just cant lock a team up consistently. Camby is going to improve that part of our game just as much as Greg would.

Also, I have read several places that Camby is a top 25-30 player in the nba by some metrics. That is pretty good. Take it with a grain of salt I guess…

well camby is averaging 12 rebounds 7 points and 2 blocks. if thats all oden averages in a season then we will not be winning a championship

Sure I would take that from oden because of his injuries (id take anything) but to bring us into a championship convo oden needs to at least average a double double and be getting his current 2.3 blocks per game or better.

I think camby is good for sure, but he is not what we need oden to be if we are going to win a championship.

by tevisthe4th on Feb 19, 2010 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't realize there was a specific number of points, blocks, or rebounds Oden needed to achieve for us to win a championship!

But seriously, Camby is no slouch. He isn’t going to light up the scoreboard on most nights, but he WILL stay on the floor enough to block a lot of shots, grab a lot of boards, and set some mean picks! And he will most likely contribute in the scoring department at a rate not far below what Oden was doing. And a huge difference is that he won’t be in foul trouble every night!

Don’t get me wrong, IF HEALTHY, I’d take Oden over Camby, but Camby can contribute greatly for this team. The bigger “if’s” have to do with Roy’s hammy and our role players like Rudy, Bayless, Dante, Martell, etc. We really need consistency out of these guys. Martell can go for 25 one night and 2 the next! Ditto Bayless and Rudy. And if Roy continues to sit or hobble around, we are going nowhere! Period! If things come together, we could still go deep. And if by some miracle G.O. Does come back this season, the combo of he and Camby could give lots of teams absolute fits!

by goobie1 on Feb 19, 2010 4:50 PM PST up reply actions

there arnt but he will have to get better than a double double for us to get one.

Yeah I dont think camby is a slouch, and I dont think we would win a championship if oden didnt improve on the production he was giving us this year we were not going to win a championship.

Sure we still have the opportunity to go deep if everything comes together in this last third of the season but we will not win a championship without a fully healthy and productive greg oden, even with that we might not win one.

by tevisthe4th on Feb 19, 2010 5:09 PM PST up reply actions

Greg and Joel aren't just missing spots on the roster

You’re talking about having lost all of our interior defense, and some very easy scores there. Both players shot over 50%. At the very least, Oden commanded double teams, setting others up for shots. Given the fact that we never really had much perimeter D outside of Batum and maybe, maybe even Martell, we almost had no defensive presence prior to the trade. Camby’s going to help in this area, I agree, but nobody’s going to double him, nor is he going to post anyone up regularly.

If we weren’t already a jump shooting team before (and we were), we are forced to be one now, and some games it works, but other times, it is painful to see. Camby isn’t going to change that.

Having Camby is definitely going to help us win games to reach the playoffs, but eventually, we’ll still have to face players like Gasol, Bynum, Howard, and senior Shaq. That’s a lot of run and wear for our lone 7-footer, who hasn’t been to the playoffs in a couple years now. Once he leaves the game, who’s going to stop these guys?

I agree that Camby doesn't replace Joel and Greg

but he does give them team back 1/2 of what it lost. I believe this team will make a push if Roy is healthy enough to play like Roy, and will make the playoffs as a 4th or 5th seed. A first round series win is not out of the question, which would have been the case before this trade.

Camby gives me hope, but we still arent 100% healthy and our guys havent had gel time. Thank goodness we have 26 games left. 6or7 seed me thinks.

replaces Joel’s shot blocking and rebounding, and can also pass the ball and hit a mid range jump shot.

Camby is a clear upgrate over Joel, but cannot compare to Oden’s inside presence.

How good can the Blazers be this year?

I think that’s an interesting question. Unfortunately, much depends on Brandon’s health and I’ve gotten a little bored of reading injury reports. With Brandon healthy, this team could be very dangerous. A first round playoff win seems possible. Unfortunately, the Lakers and Cavs look very strong—far more talented than Blazers.

by PoliSam on Feb 19, 2010 12:07 PM PST reply actions

Yes, it's all about Roy

The doubt and gloom comes from the sense that Roy will never be right this year AND nobody on the team that was on the team last year has ever won a playoff series let alone made it to the finals let alone win the finals.

by LaughingJon on Feb 19, 2010 12:14 PM PST up reply actions

Is Oden a possibility to be back in time for the playoffs?

There have been a few teasers here and there, but just wondering if they have any merit whatsoever? Even if he can play 15 min a game at 70% we could at least win a series. Huh anyone?

by lethaldose on Feb 19, 2010 12:45 PM PST reply actions

It's all about being in the groove heading into the play offs.

To me, it seems as if we’ve learned to win on the road. That was a big big problem last year and this year we’ve proven time and time again that we can win in hostile environments on the road. If Brandon is fine, if Marcus is acclimated, and if Rudy/Martell aren’t both in horrendous shooting slumps I think we can be a very very tough out in the playoffs.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

A reliable second scorer who gets easy buckets around the rim

Maybe Miller can be that player in some games. Maybe LaMarcus can be it. Maybe Jerryd has another game like against San Antonio scoring 30. Maybe Camby has a great game where he gobbles up offensive rebounds and dunks them. But in general, our problem is still the same as last year: Good teams can crowd Roy, and force the Blazers to take long jumpers while themselves getting easy penetration.

by Norsktroll on Feb 19, 2010 1:00 PM PST reply actions

All The Way?

…well very few people ever had Portland raising the Championship Trophy this season.

We can’t go all the way quite simply because there are several teams with more talent and experience ahead of us.

Look at it this way, Kevin Pritchard, a man who should be as positive as possible about The Blazers thinks obtaining Camby is just giving us a chance to make the playoffs. He goes as far as to say “if” we make the playoffs he would expect us to be a “tough out”. But even he dares not mutter the word Championship…because this team isn’t a Championship team. Yet.

I think we could, make it all the way to the playoffs, maybe all the way to the second round…but neither are automatic and neither are even guaranteed. Sorry fellow Blazer fans but this isn’t the year we chalk out places for the Championship victory parade.

I think we have a great chance at getting to the 2nd round, a fact which unsurprisingly eludes most of the MSM.

Getting to the WCF requires a leap of faith that we can avoid LA and overtake the Nuggs – tough call.

Reason #10 This is again a new team (with 3 major pieces still recovering)

I think we have the talent. We might not have the health. And with the amount of time these guys have to fit it all together, it would surprise me if we have the experience as a team to make much of a splash in this year’s playoffs.

Position in this regard is important. It would be nice to start slow against a 7th or 8th seed. I mean, if we are the team to beat, position doesn’t matter. I mean, you gotta beat the L*kers sometime, so who cares when you get ’em? But if you are still finding your sea legs, a lesser light in the first round reduces your chances of finding your rhythm.

by LaoTzu on Feb 19, 2010 5:40 PM PST reply actions

It’s silly to take some of the ESPN crew seriously… case in point:

Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy were asked to rate which teams made the “best trades” -- Jackson actually had the nerve to rank Boston as one of the teams that made the best trades (along with Cleveland and Dallas), but not Portland. Neither announcer had Portland in the top four.

I understand that it’s hard to make a case that Camby automatic propels us into an elite group, but any rational basketball fan can see that this can make a huge impact - not only because of the upgrade at center itself, but in the way that it transforms and optimizes the roles of the entire team (especially the frontcourt, where LMA and Batum go back to the spots where they excel) at both ends of the court.

I’m really excited to see what happens over the next few weeks as they figure things out.

hahah +1…. the nfl is great cuz crazy things can happen… but generally in the nba, the 7game series pretty much always gives the title to the most talented team that year…

sure on rare occassions we’ll see the Warriors upset the mavs in the 1st round, but we rarely see a team be able to keep the upsets coming up into the finals. Based on where they are now in the standings, the Blazers would have to overcome 4 different teams which are better based off record alone.

Camby is a band aid

We went from one of the best (if not the best) combo of first and second rotation centers to playing the guy we brought in as a veteran mentor…. Now we get Camby to stop the bleeding (erm I assume he will)

In getting him we lost some long range shooting
He doesnt have the same size….
We still have lost on the 2nd rotation (Camby can’t play the entire game)
Our team still needs positive playoff experience
and even before the injury’s or trade we needed a dramatic improvement to our perimeter defense in order to be a contender…(which falls on miller and bayless now)

On the plus side,
This trade gives us a real chance to have a positive playoff run and gain some of that experience we need….

and if Camby sticks around imagine the interior defense with a front court of Oden/ Pryz and Alderige/Camby…… Now that would be some intimidation…

Not Good Enough Yet

While I am a Big Blazers Fan, I will try to answer this from a realistic point of view.
1) Jump Shooting team- Got Orlando to the Finals, but didn’t get them the ring
2) Predictable Offense- I actually am not an anti-nate fan (i think he has done a good job with what he has) but the offense that is run can with the players we have can be shut down by an aggressive Defensive team.
3) Too much B.Roy ISO- hard to figure out if this is Nate’s offense or Nate running with what is his best chance to score
4) No bangers inside- helps draw fouls, leads to free throws late in corners
5) B.Roy (okay here comes ones that will draw criticism)- I honestly do not believe that if he is our #1 option, that he can lead Portland to a championship. While he is very good, he is not as good as other dominant players that lead their teams. Think of Drexler (in my mind a better player than B.Roy, Clyde never won a ring, got close, but unfortunately played in the era of Jordan). B.Roy is a few months OLDER than LeBron, a few months younger than Carmello. i know we are prejudiced, but do you think there is a GM in this league that would trade for take B.Roy over LeBron, Carmello, D.Wade, Howard, Chris Paul, Kobe, Dirk, Deron Williams… He is a top 10-20 talent, but in the past, big time players with a nice supporting cast win championships (minus Detroit, more of a team, and I guess you can make the same arguement for Boston). I see B.Roy in the Paul Pierce mode, very very good player, but will need some serious help if he is wearing a ring. Personally, if Portland does get a ring, I think it will be due to Greg Oden becoming “the man” for the Blazers. Yes, I know about the health, but if healthy, he poses match-up problems that other teams just cannot overcome.
6) Dre & B.Roy are really not complimentary players at the moment. With B.Roy liking the ball in his hands, combining with the fact that Dre can be outshot at the 3 point line by you and me, this does not make for a good combo. Add Batum to that as well. I know everyone is gaga over Batum, but having B.Roy go ISO with Dre in 1 corner and Batum in the other corner is…advantage Defense. Personally, I think B.Roy is going to have to tailor his game a little to bring out the strengths of the other players.
7) Still in the maturation process. Window is just starting to open. Honestly, even with everyone healthy, with our youth and playoff inexperience…it just wasn’t going to happen. I think the organization would have been happy with a 1st round win and a highly competitive 2nd round. I mean, can anyone think of a team as young as ours making the playoffs for the 1st time in a few years and then playing for a championship the next year?
I think our real window is 2-3 years out. The biggest thing this year was having G.Oden losing a year to grow and the rest of the team figure out how to best co-exist with him. I think all the injuries set the Blazers back a year.

Don’t get me wrong, would LOVE if they could win asap, but from a realistic sense, they are stil a little ways a way from being a serious threat.
