HoopsHype: Victor Claver Re-Signs in Spain For Next Year
HoopsHype has linked up and translated a few stories from Spanish website TuBasket.com that quote last year's first round draft pick, Victor Claver, as saying "Me playing in Portland next year? I don't think so."
Here's the Claver interview and another one with Blazers scout Jason Filippi .
-- Ben Golliver | benjamin.golliver@gmail.com | Twitter
PS Thanks to amlmart1 who linked up the Filippi video in the FanShots too.
Late Update (3:04 PM): The sticklers over at Portland Roundball Society questioned whether Claver actually made that direct quote and Hoops Hype responded to them. Go check it out.
Claver's exact words roughly translate to "A lot would have to change for me to go next year." As always, money talks louder than words and the key piece of information here is that he just signed a new contract.
Another key piece of information: In 14 games tracked by Synergy, Claver currently ranks in the 25th percentile (Below Average) for offensive efficiency in the ACB, generating just 0.77 Points Per Possession. Thanks to InvisiNinjaPDX for that one.

What a waste of a 1st round pick.
We easily could have picked him up with our 55th pick. Doesn’t seem to me like anyone else had any interest in him.

I really like KP and everything he has done.
I didnt mean to portray hate or disdain toward in whatsoever, but seriously… why Victor Claver as our 1st round pick when knowing he wont be playing for us anytime soon?

They knew he would stay in in Europe for a year or two and did that on purpose so
1) they didn’t clog up a roster spot this year by drafting someone who would want to play this year and
2) he would have a relatively low salary set by the cba when he came over rather than having to negotiate a salary with him as a second round pick.
3) we already have plenty of small forwards. He can either come over when one of them is traded or moves on in free agency or he can be trade chip himself.
Whoa whoa whoa. In you come with your “facts” and “figures”. We don’t take kindly to that sort of stuff here, mister.

Claver has been compared to Dunleavy Jr. He can be Nic’s backup after Webster is dealt (or not)

It's a shame we drafted Rudy
when we knew he wouldn’t be playing for us for at least a year.
Give Blake the MLE in 2010!
Farewell to #2 and #25, good luck to you!
#7 #10 #52 -- #5 & #88 are back!
Im not bashing on picking him up, I am just wondering why it is that they used the 1st round pick to get him, and not a later pick.

"draft and stash" instead of "draft the 'stache"?
1st round picks get guaranteed money, 2nd round picks don’t
so KP has been acquiring late 1st round picks and using them to draft/stash Euros, then trading for early 2nd round picks to sign college kids
KP was trying to “move up” and acquire a lottery pick to grab Hansbrough, if draft day reports can be believed. Those plans fell through, so he settled on Claver. If KP had selected Casspi instead, Omri would’ve been blocked by Portland logjam at the wing
Koponen and Freeland are examples of this strategy from past offseasons

yeah!!
Not to mention trading Randy Foye for some guy who’s only scored 4 points in the last month!!!
is this sarcasm? i really can't tell. honestly.
why was this a wasted pick?

How about
We traded a pick and Sergio for the pick immediately preceding it… presumably to get Omri Casspi. HOWEVER, we picked Claver, and let Omri go to the kings. In reality, we couldve not traded away Sergio, and let Sacramento get Omri the pick ahead of us, as we all knew they would have anyway. So we threw away Sergio for nothing, and passed on one of the better rookies of this class.
I'm gonna be the only A-hole that owns a Nic Batum jersey that doesn't live in France. Awesome.
Omri Casspi
Woot. Woulda been awesome watching Casspi watch Batum, Webster, Fernandez and Outlaw.

I thought we traded
Sergio and John Brockman for the pendergraph pick.
Did I have that down wrong or do you?

55th pick
means that he can negotiate salary, i believe. First round picks are locked in.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

"I told Pau the Lakers never win here in Portland; I think it's great." -- Rudy Fernandez
Victor Claver was first projected as a top 10 pick, then he hurt himself and dropped far enough for the Blazers to pick him up...
The guy is valuable either in a trade or to bring over
"Get three superstars and then fill the roster with guys willing to go through a wall to win." - KP
the pipeline is loaded with prospects
some will come, others will be flipped
the roster was full enough as it was, and KP had 4 draft choices last June. I thought he should flip a couple of them for a veteran sign and trade to thin the roster, and he probably tried to do this (to move up and select Psycho T? After the draft KP said that he made proposals on draft day that didn’t pan out, he seemed a bit “down”) So KP used all 4 of his picks, and the plan was that Mills would also play in Europe until Patty broke his foot
Then July rolled around and KP went all-in (5/50!) after Hedo, and also (reportedly) had a follow-up deal for Travis with Memphis for draft choices. But Mrs. Turk had other ideas…

Great news.
Hopefully he will continue to develop in the Euro ranks and become more NBA ready. We really don’t need him until we free up some space.
even if it was a bad selection...
it happens all the time in the NBA. No GM bats 1.000. It’s like hating on Willie Mays because he struck out every once in a while…
um..
This isn’t bad news, this was what was going to happen. Stop dogging KP.
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
agreed
i have no problem stashing guys in europe for a few years…we don’t have room for a guy like this right now anyway, so let him play over there, develop, and not get frustrated that he’s sitting on the bench in portland – because if he was ready, he’d be here, playing already.
Also
There are a few guys that took a few years coming out of Europe to play in the NBA… there’s this guy named Manu, I think you might have heard of him… oh yeah and this guy Jose. And this other guy…. Rudy?
I'm gonna be the only A-hole that owns a Nic Batum jersey that doesn't live in France. Awesome.
Victor
who?
any links that are readable to those of us who mostly speak engrisH?

I've emailed HoopsHype about it, but as I said over at PRS
They quote Claver as saying "Me playing in Portland next year? I don’t think so." However, after reading the article that Hoopshype linked to myself, I can find no such quote. Admittedly, my Spanish isn’t perfect. Either Hoopshype is being a little sloppy and not linking to the proper story, or they paraphrased a quote and attributed it to Claver. In either case, an explanation would be nice.

not really, just want the correct stuff out there as a fan,
I just figured I’d put that in there that I said it at PRS so no one thought I was ripping someone else’s word off.
Anyhow, HoopsHype had this to say.
Victor has said lately in interviews made in Spain that he’s thinking about the ACB right now and not the NBA. When he talks again about his future in the NBA he says “Mucho tienen que cambiar las cosas para que me vaya este año” is almost as saying “I don’t think so”. Anyway, I admit that the translation is not accurate and I apologize for that.

Traslation:
“Things have to change a lot for me going to the NBA this year”, something we already know. For the Blazers best interest he better plays in Europe at least one more year.
“Me playing in Portland next year? I don’t think so.”
I don’t think so, either. Not unless Marty gets traded during the summer. At this point Claver projects as Batum’s future backup at SF

I guess the one positive is that we can use him in a trade package
to someone that doesn’t want to fill a roster spot.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
This is different interview from the one I linked up.
I´ve read this comment by HurraKane212: “my IP address isn’t authorized to view it”. So maybe you can´t watch it in USA. Then I´ve written what Filippi says:
"Paul Allen, just like I said, he loves our team, but if Rudy it´s not his favorite he´s definitively one of his favorites. And that´s one reason why Rudy is considered untradable. The opposite teams wanted Rudy Fernandez …broke the deal, Paul Allen, our management, say no way, Rudy is untradable, it´s like Brandon Roy.
I´ve heard that his jersey is the most popular one in Portland now. And I can see why because Rudy connects with fans and Rudy has the advantage that not all the players in our team have, Rudy (…. I don´t understand a word here) ) be the favorite of the female fan base, so I guess that helps to sell some extra jerseys.
He (Claver) reminds me a little of Travis Outlaw, who we traded, Travis Outlaw played both 3 and 4 position for us, and I can personally see Victor Claver being that type of player. A guy that comes off the bench sometimes at the 3, sometimes at the 4. We think that Victor is an NBA player, we think that Victor could play in the NBA now. I think that we will consider bringing him over, but there´re other obstacles, you know, our roster situation, which is something that may change, of course there is a buy-out, so whatever happens I think Victor is gonna be successfull in the ACB if he stays here, but if he comes to the NBA it will be in Portland and we think, you know, he´s a guy that can help us."

well if Filippi is right and Rudy is "untouchable"
then Jerryd better get busy learning how to play PG or he’ll be the next Blazer to move on
there’s no way to prove it, but…I continue to suspect that Paul Allen has a secret deal that has made it “worth Rudy’s while” to keep playing in Portland for much less $$$ than he would’ve made playing in Europe (CSKA) from 2009-2012
billionaire man-love, there’s no point trying to explain it…it is what it is

As we all know, Portland has a kid named “Cunningham” who already does this pretty well, even though Dante is more of a 4-3

acb.com has a link for its games online broadcasting, legally and for free.
Go here. The King´s Cup schedule is at your left. Click on ACB360 to watch the games. You can watch them delayed too.
Remember, Spanish time is 9 hours more than WT. Tomorrow Claver plays against Ricky Rubio at 9:00AM. Death match system. Uuuuhhhh, Víctor or Ricky won´t survive.
I went to the site and saw a 1st quarter jodate
With the words “Jaric” and “sublime” in the same sentence. That was surreal.

I sure hope he signs with the Blazers soon!
I made up a nice basket of goodies to send to him as a sort of “Welcome to Portland” gift — some veggies from my summer garden, a yummy salmon fillet, some tacos, etc. Now, I’m afraid this stuff will all go bad before he arrives :(
I guess that’s why they say, “To the Victor go the spoils.” Of course, some (not dario argento) would say I shouldn’t be giving gifts to these players — they have so much already. But that’s why he’s called the well-pampered Claver.
