Travis Marquez Outlaw Appreciation Thread

As many of you know, outlaw is now a member of the clippers, here is a thread for appreciation for the one they call Catfish, or Trout, or Mr. Fourth Quarter, or just simply:

#25

Star-divide

Well, goodbye outlaw. Maybe you will come back next year; but if this is it, you should know how much the city of Portland appreciates your efforts to bring this franchise for the depths to where it is now.

Back to Back Alley-Oop Dunks by Travis Outlaw!!!

Can’t believe not more people can prioritize anything about Outlaw above his unbelievable dunks! I was at the home season finale two seasons ago (fan appreciation night where they give away tons of excess blazers swag after the game, I got a Greg Oden bobble-head, a sick poster of the youngins’, and a buzz… but I digress). That night is burned into my memory as one of the most fun hoops experiences in my life. I hope some of you other BEdgers out there remember this moment too:

4th Quarter, less than a minute left and Portland has a huge lead over the youthful Memphis Grizzlies. Sergio Rodriguez gets a chance to push it to mid-court where, in perfect Spanish Chocolate fashion, drops a half-court dime right at the front of the RIM where Travis Outlaw was waiting mid-air for a reverse two-handed dunk. It was awesome! Though not a rim-rocking dunk…. Needless to say the Rose Garden is erupting; both from the energy of that dunk AND due to the immense promise that this young Blazers unit was holding. Next possession, less than 30 seconds left, Memphis bricks a shot — Portland rebounds, outlet to Sergio and BLAM-O, an almost exact replica dunk: Two-handed reverse slam alley-oop from half-court that left the HOOP SHAKING! Crowd goes crazy, que the dance music, it was truly an electric way to end a season.

Travis was a great Blazer…. I want to buy an “Outlaw Los Angeles” jersey so bad and I really feel that in a less-disciplined situation that Travis Outlaw is going to be a very consistent and good NBA scorer. He has enough game to stay in the game for a while and I look forward to following his continued success.

Check out the video of this memory on you-tube:

no blake appreciation?

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Depends on whether we have bird rights

We could sign Camby, trade him for an equally signed Travis and still have out MLE to fill out any roster needs.

We will be over the cap and
only have the MLE to sign Trav, but if we have Cambys bird rights we can still hang on to our MLE.

He was a class act and delivered a lot of great memories, that Memphis shot being chief among them. Here’s hoping he gets a hearty ovation every time he returns to the Rose Garden.

I wasnt the hugest fan of Outlaw the player

but Outlaw the person was as cool as they come. His back to back alley oops against memphis was one of the coolest experiences I have had at a blazer game, but that’s a long story.

I think its important to realize that Outlaw is going to get a legitimate chance to realize some of his goals, namely being a starter. That likely never would have happened in Portland. Here is to hoping he takes this oppurtunity and runs with it. I will definitely be rooting for him…

Good luck Trav.

He finally gets the chance to shoot as much as he wants and showcase for that big money with the Clips. This move was what was the best for both Outlaw and the Blazers.

Guess today will be the last time I wear my Outlaw jersey before being retired into back of my closet.

Another underappreciated Blazer...

who withstood the contempt of many fans only to come out still smiling and having fun. That’s what I like about Travis the most. His happy-go-lucky attitude was contagious and everyone loved him as a teammate. Some of his biggest contributions to this team were off the court. He maintained the locker room with his fun loving and gregarious attitude which ultimately brought Roy and Aldridge together. He is longest tenured Blazer in recent history which, for a fan (at least me), brings us (me) closer to the team. He bridged that gap between the Jail Blazer era and now, he has history, and for most true Blazer fans, is as important as his contributions on the court…

Thanks Trav, Travis, Bo, Mr. 4th Quarter, Catfish, or whatever they’re calling you these days! In my book, you are still my favorite Trout!

We'll miss you #2 & #25!

Maybe they made a deal with Trav

and told him that if he takes one for the team and goes to LA for the rest of this season that they would resign him and give him a bonus for pain and suffering. I really hope he will be back next year.

Goodbye to my favorite Trailblazer

It’s been a rough season. Travis got hurt and we weren’t able to watch him play.

He wasn’t able to earn his next contract, and both centers got hurt and left the team needing to package him for a center in order to have a chance at the playoffs.

Really depressing. Farewell Travis, you were here with Damon and Rasheed and Bonzi but you didn’t let them rub off on you. You were here when Joel arrived. You were a young kid from Mississippi who wasn’t ready for the league, but turned into a legit scoring threat and a clutch performer. You brought highlights and yes, some mistakes, but it was a pleasure to watch you play.

I’m sorry to see you go.

Henry Abbott with a profile in his interview with Kevin Arnovitz about the trade that sums Travis up pretty well
Abbott: I have thought about that player way too much, and will struggle to keep this concise. But some ideas: When he came into the NBA he could not shoot A LICK. Every time he started to, he’d coil and spring in the most bizarre fashion — some guys lean right or left when they shoot. He would get his upper body going in both directions before he landed, which is really amazing.

It is to everlasting credit, however, that the guy has learned to become a very special kind of shooter. Few NBA players go from never being allowed to shoot to having repeated plays called for them with the game on the line. And every single player who ever makes that leap is, you can guarantee it, a hard worker. Which matters. Outlaw is frank that he really wants to be a star. That’s his motivation, and I believe he’ll keep working hard because of it. He’s a real-deal long athlete, he has this ability to score. He’s also everybody’s best friend, and to my eyes an important part of why the Blazers have generally been a cheerful team.

However, he is not the most aware player. Some players are really quick thinking, but that’s not him. The exact cluelessness that makes him impervious to crunch-time pressure also makes him a liability in complex defensive schemes. His defense has gotten much better, and the sky’s the limit for his individual D. But you know how Boston so cleverly rotates to keep everyone covered with help? Hard to picture him thriving in that system. And, there was a game the Blazers lost when Brandon Roy was doubled in the corner on the big play, and he seemed to have no plan. Afterward, we learn that Outlaw was supposed to have cut down the lane, but for some reason didn’t. Which was too bad.

by Norsktroll on Feb 17, 2010 7:41 AM PST reply actions

Aside from missing Travis, the person, I feel considerable regret at losing Travis, the basketball player.

I understand why the trade happened. I can see that the Blazers have both depth at forward and a gaping hole at center. And I do agree that it’s important to try to get to the playoffs this year — and to do better this year than last. There should be no regression, regardless of injuries.

Still, I feel certain that there will be times ahead when the unique talent of Travis Outlaw will be sorely missed. Of course his genuineness and charm are irreplaceable.

So long, Travis.

I was looking forward to a Outlaw, Cunningham and Batum giving a relentless energetic defensive switching pressure without creating a mismatch coming off bench to disrupt the other team. Add a fast guard Rudy or Bayless maybe even mills and it would rock!
