ooo..i smell a sequel to his movie...

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

If it's A-Woj I'm always dubious

Courtside is on in about an hour, we’ll see what they have to say about this (if anything)

Camby is 35, Blake is beloved by everyone at Blazer’s HQ but could be resigned in July…so it’s not a completely off the wall proposal

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 15, 2010 4:57 PM PST reply actions

Blake is "beloved" by everyone at Blazer's HQ?

Yet they desperately try to get a new PG every single year. If Blake was beloved then we probably wouldn’t have traded Jack for Bayless or signed Miller. Not to mention that I distinctly remember either Nate or KP saying they were excited Rudy could play PG. (Before he came over)

For such a beloved PG they sure try really hard to find someone to replace him.

Batum brings the doom.

by The Running Man on Feb 15, 2010 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

every single interview for the last few years

from KP to Nate to Dean to Brandon to Bayless…they all talk about how great a player that Steve is when his name is brought up by the reporter, that’s what I meant

and of course Blake’s received a lot of PT this year, certainly more than a lot of Bedgers would’ve given him

he’s not irreplaceable by any means, but I get the feeling that if there was any way for KP to fill the emergency center position without involving #2 in the deal, he’s probably already exhausted those avenues

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 15, 2010 5:52 PM PST up reply actions

I think of all the players on the roster they would prefer to trade Blake the most.
As the Portland Trail Blazers make trade proposals around the league, one name keeps popping up: Steve Blake.Wojnarowski

That’s just the way it goes though. I don’t think KP is in love with Steve any more than anyone else on the roster. You never burn a bridge and the Blazer’s organization has been very good about saying nice things about their players. They raved about James Jones. Said only nice things about Frye.

In the end it’s not about how much you like a player, it’s about how much you like him compared to his replacement. I don’ think the Blazers would cry too much about losing their third best PG.

Batum brings the doom.

KP has said his biggest regret since taking over as Blazer's GM

was trading away Blake to Milwaukee

I get it that you think Steve sucks, but it’s fairly obvious that he’s held in high regard by everyone in the Blazer’s organization. (And they weren’t just saying nice things to buff up his image prior to dealing him, I’m referring to training camp and media day interviews. Post game interviews from last year, etc)

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 15, 2010 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

I remember that. I always thought that was a funny thing for him to say.

I don’t actually believe he really meant it, but it was nice thing to say. Didn’t he say that at Steve’s press conference when he was resigned? He might as well be saying it at Steve’s birthday party or retirement dinner or something. Well intentioned hyperbole.

I think all our players are held in high regard by the organization. I think Blake is probably last among the guards, with the possible exception of Patty Mills. Quick has already said that KP thinks Rudy is more important than Blake. Roy is obviously more valued than Blake. I imagine Bayless and Miller are as well.

Batum brings the doom.

not since 2004

I suppose you’re going to say Nate’s man-love has blinded him to the sucktitude that is Blake, and that once Steve is finally gone Rudy will blossom into the next best European PG since Tony Parker?

or words to that effect

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 15, 2010 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

No.

I don’t think Nate is blinded by anything. I think he’s doing the best he can to win games, but that doesn’t exactly reflect on how the organization values players, especially long term

Nate was accused of having a man-crush on Jarrett Jack. That didn’t stop KP from shipping him out for a rookie.

I think Rudy is vastly overrated. He’s also young, so I guess there’s a chance he could blossom into something special. I think Bayless is banged up and doesn’t seem to be in the same shape he was earlier in the season.

Miller is still the starting PG despite being inconsistent and Nate tried a Miller/Webster/Batum lineup before he relented and stuck Blake into the starting lineup. Desperation will make you do funny things. I can’t blame him for that, I might have done the same thing.

Batum brings the doom.

by The Running Man on Feb 15, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Blake is still

better than Bayless, no matter how you slice it. Bayless might get better in the future, and Blake has probably peaked, but right now, if you need a point guard to do point guard stuff, Blake is the second best guy on the team.

I slice it like this.

Blake is 54th in PER. Bayless is 27th.

As for “PG stuff”, what does Blake do? He’s way more of spot up shooter now than he used to be. He’s basically an off-guard when he plays with Roy, same as Bayless.

Not a very good argument

to back up Bayless, who himself has a small sample size. I like Bayless, but if you need somebody to bring the ball up the court and distribute when Andre is injured or needs a rest, I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting all my eggs in the Bayless basket yet.

I think Bayless will be a good player in this league, but I don’t see him as the PG on a contender. I see him has another Nate Robinson.

Rose hasn't been incredible this year, especially at the start of the season. Also, PER doesn't take defense into account.

Blake plays better team defense than Sergio or Bayless. I think Bayless plays better man defense, but eventually he will learn the schemes and will probably become the better overall defender.

I was talking about the offense end, where overall Bayless has been better than Blake. Recently Bake has been making something of a comeback while Bayless has looked pretty banged up, but as a whole it’s hard to argue that Blake has been anything but terrible this season.

Both he and Camby are expiring deals, I believe. I can’t see why taking Telfair would be a deal breaker.

To me, the big question is, who do we have to toss in to make the numbers work if they add Telfair? That’s the biggest potential problem.

Adding cash doesn't satisfy cap requirements...

We don’t have enough cap space to absorb Telfair’s deal. Adding cash can help convince the Clippers to make the deal, but it can’t be used to satisfy the CBA.

the capspace would be needed just to reach Camby's 9.1 mil from Outlaw+Blake's 7.6 mil

the trade machine says that Portland needs to add 1.4+ mil to the deal to satisfy the CBA, if Bassy is involved. Just adding more of PA’s money won’t get ’er done in this case

Lot of expiring contracts in this deal.

This is the best short term solution, IMO. We could probably sign Outlaw and/or Blake in the offseason and if Pryz isn’t looking good, Camby probably has a year or two left in him.

by vanceanthony on Feb 15, 2010 5:08 PM PST reply actions

Camby is still an elite rebounder and an above-average interior defender. Going for him is a nice meshing of maintaining future assets and going for a series win this season.

I'm find it funny Dunleavy is balking at the offer.

It makes sense for both parties. Clippers need a shake up to play more inspired. Camby isn’t going to be resigned and they need outside shooting. Blake would certainly be a better backup PG than what they have now and Outlaw would add another scoring option.

i figured 2day is when the blazers rumors would start heating up...

after the all-star festivities are over and KP had a chance to talk in person with other GM’s. blake and outlaw for camby looks good as long as we have no intentions of signing either one this season. although outlaw’s scoring and personality really give a boost to the team, so i guess you’d have to weigh which one would be more impactful in a positive way; interior defense, or outlaws clutch scoring and personality/presence.

I’d hate to take back Bassy. Hope we don’t have to. I like Blake, actually, but in a reserve role. If the threes aren’t dropping, back to the bench. Where are our threes going to come from when Rudy’s cold?

Camby would be a great addition for the year.

per the woj

This time, Blake has been offered with Travis Outlaw(notes) to the Los Angeles Clippers for center Marcus Camby(notes), a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

It’s also believed that the Blazers will add cash to the bid. All three players have expiring contracts, so it would likely take an additional ingredient – cash and or a second-round draft pick – to convince the Clippers to give up Camby for this package.

Camby, 35, is averaging 7.7 points and 12.1 rebounds for the Clippers.

BT Smith said the Clippers will want 2-3 mil (in addition to the necessary capspace) to make this deal.

KP will have to “sell” Paul Allen on this trade, as usual

Makes perfect sense.

This move helps in the short term without hurting in the long term. Blake and Outlaw have been great, but they simply won’t have roles on this team in the future. Our bigs have done a great job of platooning the C position this season, but if we want any shot in the playoffs we need some help in the middle. Camby’s a rebounding machine, and has good enough hands to play with Miller/Roy. Other teams would have to respect him in the lineup. No disrespect to Blake/Outlay, but this makes perfect sense for this team.

if Portland gives the Clippers 2.5 mil in the deal

that would pay for Bassy’s contract this year. The problem is, Telfair has an ETO (player option) for next year at 2.75 mil. Would you “opt out” of that (in this economy) if you were Sebastian? If he doesn’t, it’s guaranteed money (which I suppose Paul Allen could also buy out, if he was so inclined)

Long story short…Bassy can’t be waived, only bought out for 5.25 mil

I just ran the numbers on the fanpost with the poll

Camby + Telfair = 11,650,000
Blake + Outlaw = 7,600,000
capspace = 1,265,626
8,865,626 × 125 +100k = 11,182,032

11,650,000 – 11,182,032 = 467,968

Cunningham, Pendergraph and Mills are all are making 457,588

Shavlik Randolph and Anthony Tolliver are still listed on storyteller’s website, but I’m assuming they can’t be included in any deals for salary purposes. The next highest current salary is Juwan Howard at 825,497

I do agree with others that Bayless being the backup PG is going to be painful.

But I think the defensive rebounding and shot blocking presence will make up for it. Nate just needs to make sure Miller or Roy is always on the court.

once roy is healthy

miller or roy should always be on the court. easy to do this – just sub miller out early, bring him back at quarter end to run the 2nd unit when Roy leaves.

Bayless and Rudy were absolutely brutal in the Phoenix game

With ‘Dre around, it wouldn’t be as bad as last year, when Blake went down and Sergio/Bayless were playing PG, but I agree that Miller could start and leave the game early each half, then return to the game when Roy needs a rest. Nate should be able to stagger their minutes so the offensive “stagnation becomes conflagration” (as someone once said…)

but if either one can’t play (meaning Brandon, since Andre never misses a game) then the Blazer’s offense will be hurtin’ for certain without Blake running the point

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 15, 2010 7:23 PM PST up reply actions

easy to mitigate that though:

Miller can easily play more minutes than he has been
Bayless can/should be paired with Roy as much as possible.

Those two things combined would make Bayless as the backup PG quite doable for 15 minutes per game.

In fact, I’d suggest that Bayless come in for Miller halfway through the 1st/3rd, then come back in for Roy at the quarter break. This puts Miller on the court with Rudy and Batum, which is an ideal lineup to start the 2nd quarter in my opinion

I don't see a way KP could get both of them back

with one MLE. Sign and trade, I suppose

I’m just less certain that Portland would overspend to resign Travis…it all depends on what he’s offered, of course. You never know, the Clippers may like #25 after his audition, or Memphis could make a run at him on July 1.

Blake OTOH, would take a “home-town discount” to return to PDX

because you don't think they'll go for a combined 5-6 million?

I don’t see Steve Blake getting much more, maybe full MLE as a bad signing for a team that really needs a PG, nothing against Steve, but in this economic environment, I don’t see it.

Outlaw could still get the full MLE, but I doubt that as well. Both together may make more than the MLE though.

Both together may make more than the MLE though.

That’s my suspicion. I think there’s a market out there for Travis if he can show he’s all the way back. Wheels says he looks terrific and Jensen has cleared him for everything. Much faster rehab than with Webster, last year

As much as folks like to bag on Blake, I think there will be a strong mutual interest to see him back in PDX next fall, assuming he’s dealt this week

Blake's a 2-3 million per year player this summer

Outlaw is around 3-4 million, maybe the full MLE if someone really likes him.

it’s going to be a buyer’s market this summer as there will be a lot of teams with capspace. that plus the down economy and the uncertainty of the new CBA are going to depress salaries for the non-max guys

This would be a good trade for us

-clears logjams for us that would otherwise cause problems the rest of the season.
-provides us with an actual center for the stretch run – and one that would plug easily into our given offensive and defensive schemes.
-Only giving up two guys who are expiring anyway – either could be brought back in summer if mutually desired (same situation as we are in with them already)

Dwight Jaynes says:

Things are heating up for the Trail Blazers
February 15th, 2010 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under NBA, Trail Blazers.
Been getting texted from all over the place tonight. The Trail Blazers are out there in the middle of a couple of things. They’re busy.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of shuffle of expiring contracts to a team that would address Portland’s big-man need.

And they’re said to be working on something else, too. We will let you know as soon as we have something that’s nailed down.

he was missing it earlier today

I love how obtuse and general he is with his sources.

I think I should start my own rumor blog.

Blazers busy at trade deadline looking for bigman and using expiring contracts. Stay tuned when the national columnists update their twitter, I be here first to report it!

lol

yeah I’m watching for Marc Stein and AWoj on twitter, those two plus chad ford are the best at breaking stuff, Quick and Maxey seem to have the best track record of guessing whether the Blazers will make a move or not.

Roy still felt tightness in right hamstring. If he feels great Tues., he’ll play vs. Clips Fri. vs. Celtics more likely.

After Blazer practice tonight, looks like B-Roy will wait until Friday (Boston) to return. Outlaw practiced but is probably a week away

Am I missing something?

We would be getting a center (obviously a huge need) that is averaging 12 rebounds per game for Blake, who isn’t very good and is in a very crowded backcourt, and Outlaw, who we will be able to resign anyway. I can only hope and pray that the Clippers are this dumb. Centers that produce like Camby are very valuable (remember Washington wanted both Rudy and Batum for Haywood, who is putting up worse numbers than Camby?)

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

and Blake and Outlaw will be long gone as well

so why not give us some help for this year, and clear away the PT problems at the same time? where’s the downside?

The downside is using your two expiring contracts

This will not give us what we need, except for this year.

on an unrelated topic

is anyone but me still trying to figure out what the heck Joe Dumars was doing last summer? The guy trades away his best player and heart of his team for an over the hill expiring contract, and is lauded for making a smart move to give him cap flexibility to rebuild the team on fly.

Ok, so far so good.

But then he goes out and commits 17+ million per year to an undersized chucker and the softest “power” forward in the league, who lives on the 3 point line and shoots a poor percentage.

Truly mind blowing. I’m still trying to figure out what his plan was.

Isiah and Dumars

they were “smart” enough to beat the Blazers back in ’90

but the front office is another playing field altogether

It so often comes down to the same thing for me

You can’t trade outlaw, espesially to another team in our conference because he can destroy you in the forth on any given night. You get his team in a seven game playoff series and they just might unleash him all seven games and he will probably win four of those.

But the problem with keeping him is that Nate simply doesn’t have the game skills to use him when he’s hot and sit him when he’s not. Instead just putting him in in the forth and letting him letting him do his thing no matter if it’s rain down unstoppable jumpers or make lots of weird mistakes and miss most of his jumpers.

Does this make sense to anybody or just me?

PLEASE let this be true.

It would be worth it if I never have to talk about Steve Blake ever again. I love him, just not on this team.

Batum brings the doom.

If the deal is done (and I've learned to be a skeptic until proof)

I am quite satisfied.

But would somebody tell me why we would want to resign Travis or Blake? We still have 3 PGs left, along with 2 backup PFs. Batum and Webster are here too. I don’t see us resigning either in the offseason.

About time!
