PrintSo todayyesterday was Valentine's day, and it iswas the day of the All-star game. Not sure when or if that has happened before, but it has not happened recently (although it was on the 15th two times last decade). I don't know about you, but I really like days that happen to synchronize, like my 23rd birthday was on March 7th, 2000, which was Super Fat Tuesday - when Mardis Gras synchronized with Super Tuesday.
So how about some random pictures about love? Because todayyesterday is a day for love or something.

The thing that makes me a skeptic of the value of this deal is the fact the Lakers
get a huge addition in Hinrich. I like Thomas as a rotation big, but I’d rather go after Bass/a player in the draft/bring Freeland over than do something that extends the Lakers window for another 3 years

I would enjoy if, on Saturday afternoons
They had some fun events, non serious, like a center three point shootout, HORSE, etc, let the fans have fun, mic the players, and just show it on NBA TV. Kind of like Arthur Ashe kid’s day at the US Open, where the players just come out and have fun and show off.

Last year they started splitting it up.
Too many STH’s for one night. The thing that sucked about it last year was that they also split up the guys who showed up each day. I had Channing, Rudy, Nic.. Przy… Monty. The other night had Roy, Aldridge, Oden, and Nate. I can’t remember how the rest of the team shook down.

Simulink sucks.
Matlab worked the best for me when I was running it in Unix with perl scripts.

As an undergrad, my Latin teacher and I used Perl to parse text, create frequency matrices, load them into Matlab, and determine probabilities that certain books/plays belonged to the same corpus. After that, all the dynamic system stuff I had to do for grad classes were at least easier on the Matlab side.

I would like to get Tyrus and tell him, “you behave for 27 games. That’s it. Go crazy, block shots, rebound, play hard. Then you make mad bank and we get the playoffs. It works for both of us.”
He and LMA wouldn’t be that bad of a 4/5 combo. Tyrus leaves his man too often, but blocks shots and rebounds well. He also guards LeBron and Bosh well, which is cool.

we’re going into an iffy period with the CBA, he gets injured a lot, fades late in games, and doesn’t hit the three to properly spread the floor.
Nic does what we need from the 3. He defends, hits the three, and doesn’t demand touches. Deng makes a lot of money to be the small forward version of LMA.

He’s kinda a quiet player, and he can play the 4, but he’s not a good boarder, is a much worse defender than we all expected he’d be…
I mean, a few years ago, I thought he’d be an allstar. But he’s developed into a very milquetoasty, mid-range jump shooting, kinda non-descript expensive player.

I'm not so sure of that
I think in the right system, Rudy could be a fringe all star on a yearly basis. However, he will never beat out Brandon Roy for minutes, neither of them can guard 3s, and Rudy can’t play the 1 (yet). In Lopez you have an active, defense oriented C, who with Joel aging/injured and Oden yet to prove he can make it through a full season fills a big hole for the Blazers in the short and long term.

This was true at the time that Snacob said it.
Its rare for a player to make as big a jump from year 1 to 2 as Durant did, and in KD’s case coaching had a lot to do with it. Oden might make as big a jump, but the odds are against it, I’d say.
We should all be happy that it turned out well for Oden in this regard.

This is awful coverage of an event I enjoy.
But I’d like just one sports news site advertise themselves as spoiler-free for the West Coast. It used to by typical that TV news shows would give warning before giving results that hadn’t been seen on the West Coast. For me, the hardest part is figuring out that average should be, for a given stat.
For example, the first time you see PER, the correct response is normally, “Is that good?”.
I don’t know of a good side that shows the general definition of a given advanced stat, and what level would be average, great, and “Mendoza line” equivalent.

It feels like there are a million advanced stats right now, some better than others, but no place to really understand them all unless you want to dig in and learn every formula.

That is just it. Most of the stats are half-baked, and they wouldn’t fly in a real world work environment.

Well, their goal is to find ways to better understand what a "great" player is, which is great.
But the fine line is when you take the stat as gospel. There are so many stats right now, and many of them still very inefficient, that you can often find a stat that takes your point of view, and unless another person is a stats expert, they really can’t reply. It’s often a conversation killer due to the complexity involved.
the stats measure production, and often do a good job of identifying good, underrated producers. Calling them useless is just as bad as calling them gospel.

leaving, but all of our young players coupled with the high turnover in the NBA means we’re in store for some not so fun goodbyes. I’m one who values off court chemistry, so the thought of Travis leaving does scare me (in addition to being sad that we’re losing a great person/solid player) but of the forwards, one of Nic/Martell/Travis is going to go, and Nic’s defense has made him borderline untouchable

he chases blocks a lot, and that can hurt his teams. He also tends to just float around the free throw line on offense, but that’s not a huge problem in our offense.

look at Camby’s RB numbers. He is just ridiculous at rebounding, even in his advanced age. Nice shot-blocking even still, and he doens’t seem to chase as many as he did in Denver.
his on/off stats are excellent both on offense and defense. Definitely worth the expirings to take him on for a year. Then pay him 3-4 million as an emergency big moving forward.

Camby is the perfect deal for us, this year. He is a Przybillan rebounder/shot-blocker. Not quite the defender, but has a nice jump shot that fits perfectly into our offense.

Besides for the traffic, I love living in Vancouver.
First, she changed up the movie she wanted to see and we just saw the Wolfman at Cinetopia which was badass. But we needed to do something closer than Portland, so we went to Beaches.

i live in the minnehaha area but have been hanging out everywhere from the battle ground and cascade park areas. I’ve been living up here since 2001 but always spend most of my time in Portland.

How long have they had the blue paint markers for the downhill course?
Has this been for the past few Olympics, or is it new?
I don't remember this, but it makes sense as an aid for flat light conditions. I know that when it is overcast on the mountain with a thick cloud layer, it is very difficult to see

Not really.
We have the “stoner” area (Santa Cruz) and the Berkeley area, which is its own animal. And San Francisco of course.
Beyond that, it’s really mostly tech workers and the support system for them. It’s a fairly professional area.
We have some good farmers markets here, all over the valley. Good local farms, great produce, good prices. It catches a lot of demographics, though it’s different for every market based on their local area.
It's a bit like saying "Isn't every area of Portland like Hawthorne?"
In reality, there’s plenty of variety across the metro area up there, from Gresham to Beaverton.
My wife chimes in:
She says that if she doesn’t know the meaning of Asar, shed’ likely go to Kebab-a-Rama. But once she knew what Asar meant, she switched her answer, because she felt the Asar booth would likely be more authentic.
I agree it sounds more authentic...
…but if ya don’t know what it means, does it pull you in or help you remember it?

It is a bummer and is empty feeling
But the trade makes sense… clears up rotation room for Bayless and Batum and Rudy, which was something we all mostly wanted.
Travis can be brought back if he wants it, or he can go get more minutes elsewhere. And we got a still-good veteran center who we can rent or re-sign to back up Odie.

His bit with Brandon for the All-star thing and his interviews with Rudy and Patty were priceless.
And that line about how they shouldn’t play Rick James on family night was great. I played Air Hockey against Travis once. I love watching him get excited. He’s the guy who has been on the team the longest now. I’m really going to miss him. I’ve been missing him not playing even though my heart could never take watching him play too closely.

His actual problem is he’s a way overrated defender because he doesn’t leave the basket and can be beat man to man rather easily considering his reputation.
BUT he’s an AWESOME weakside help shot blocker and rebounder. Awesome.

AWoj, we all hate him but the fool has sources…He mentioned we tried to get Haywood for Blake/Picks/Webster…but Wizards wanted Travis instead of Martell…

Martel is a horrible team defender…one on one, physically D’ing up the likes of Kobe and Carmelo is fine but when there’s a cutter (which most 2nd team guys have to do to get a shot) he’s totally lost

Hmm, I disagree heartily
Martell has had some TERRIFIC all-round defensive games this year.
Travis is not a good defender at all; that isn’t his game.
Everyone gets beat or gets lost every once in a while… Martell doesn’t do it often.

I've heard different stories of who calls the player first.
Either way, it seems like the only trade we’ve ever had a whiff of in advance is this one, so it’s likely that there’s an ESPN contact in the Clipper org. No biggie, but it must stink for the player and family.

It’s not uncommon to be traded in the last year of your contract, I imagine he was fully aware of the likelihood, even back when signing.
And it was clearly made to be this long (3 years) so he could be moved easily.
Blake didn’t get jerked around, he had his best years with us.

Yep. I don't think Blake will be upset.
I suspect he knew the writing was on the wall for a month or two, but he’s a pro and played right through it. I have no doubt he’ll be a pro and will skillfully slow down the Clipper fast break soon.

Not many other places woulda’ given him so many starting gigs and such a big role, and made him like family!

With Brendan Haywood in Dallas, the best short-term rental option in the middle is Camby, who makes little sense at this point for a Clippers team that has slipped 10 games below .500 and headed into the All-Star break on a four-game losing streak. With an expiring contract, Camby can help a team now without hurting the balance sheet going forward.
Now in his 14th season, Camby will be 36 in March, but his production has held up remarkably well in two seasons since being traded to the Clippers. The one place he has dropped off is in terms of his shot blocking, which can be explained by a combination of two factors. First, Camby was getting a healthy boost from friendly scorers at the Pepsi Center (they’ve since turned their attention to Chris Andersen). The difference in his block rate per 40 minutes on the road from 3.6 in 2007-08 to 2.5 this season can probably be largely attributed to playing alongside Chris Kaman, meaning slightly less responsibility for help defense.
Camby has been stronger than ever on the glass, pulling down a career-best 22.7 percent of available rebounds and essentially one in three opponent misses (33.1 percent of available defensive rebounds). Both marks lead the league. Camby does have some issues defensively in terms of stepping out on the perimeter and playing the pick-and-roll, but he is an excellent defensive anchor who would upgrade most teams in the middle.
After posting an impressive .556 True Shooting Percentage during his first season in L.A., Camby has slipped back to the near-50 percent range he settled in at with the Nuggets. Hoopdata.com’s numbers show that Camby benefited from a temporary uptick in his accuracy at the rim in 2008-09. However, he’s likely to improve the 27.0 percent of attempts he’s hitting from 16-23 feet. While Camby has never been quite accurate enough to justify the number of long twos he takes, he’s made between 35 and 37 percent of them the previous three seasons. Camby’s free throw percentage should also bounce back, making him more efficient than he has been so far.

In town in advance of their Tuesday game against the Trail Blazers, the Clippers were having a team dinner at Portland’s Ringside steakhouse Monday night when Camby received a call on his cell phone from Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard. Pritchard informed Camby that he will likely be traded to Portland once the league finalizes the deal on Tuesday.
After taking the call, Camby immediately walked out of the restaurant. A source close to him says he is "very upset" about the trade. He had hoped to re-sign with the Clippers this summer.

Outlaw, 25, played in 11 games this season before breaking his left foot, and the Clippers are unsure when he’ll play again. Blake, 29, is averaging 7.6 points and four assists in 51 games.
The Blazers have been searching for some inside help to deflect the blow of losing centers Greg Oden(notes) and Joel Przybilla(notes). Some in the league also believe Pritchard wants to clear the way for Jerryd Bayless(notes) to get more time in the backcourt with Andre Miller(notes).
The Clippers, meanwhile, also have been shopping forward Al Thornton(notes), who was meeting with his agent Monday in Portland.
Camby, 35, is averaging seven points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers. He is making $9.1 million this season in the final year of his contract. Just last week, he told Yahoo! Sports he hoped the Clippers wouldn’t trade him.
"It feels good to be a wanted man, but I like it here," Camby said.
Camby left the restaurant without most of his teammates getting a chance to tell him goodbye. He is not believed to have finished his meal.

This morning I had to go to the house we are watching and turn off the alarm for the cleaning lady. I picked up dog poo in the yard and just put it in the regular trash because I figured the cleaning lady would take it out. I then went home and went to bed.
In the evening, my wife and I go to the house and I throw something in the trash and smell the poo. I say to my wife, “Crap, she didn’t take out the trash. I’m gong to take it out now because it smells like poo.” She says, “OK.”
I take out the trash and five minutes later she says, “What did you do with that trash bag?” I say, “I took it out.” She says, “Why.” I say, “Because it smelled like poo.”
Seriously, what is wrong with her?
So then we are leaving and she keeps parking on their steep driveway instead of at the flat top or on the street. She’s complained the last two times about getting back into the car because the door wants to close on her and this time, the door closes on her and hurts her shoulder and she get pissed.
Then we get home, and I see a spot in the carpet and clean it with carpet cleaner. She says, “What are you cleaning?” And I say, “The carpet.” She gave me a dirty look and hasn’t talked to me since.
Meh
She makes more than me, I’ll take some of that cash and start my own detective agency.

I’ll never forget his hilarious “fight” with Dwight Howard earlier this season though.

Windows Mobile 7…..woah…i’m impressed.
MSFT totally revamped the OS based on the Zune interface…with an HD OLED screen, Xbox Live integration, this thing got some legs to compete against iPhone…
The gaming on it looks better than PSP and the user interface looks completely awesome.

It’s one of the more obvious trades that I and others predicted. I think Camby is still “good enough” to have some impact this season. Maybe more importantly it forces Nate to finally focus his rotation on playing Nic and Jerryd more to see what is the what.
That was particularly snore-inducing figure skating

The German pair was extremely disappointed since they were back to back world champions, and they had the chance to win the first gold in about 50 years. Bronze is nice but not that special.
They're the US's direct competitors for the overall medal total
So any German screwup is usually good.

We will have to see. Norway is likely to win quite a lot in biathlon and cross-country skiing. Björgen looked very good in the women’s cross country. Though I fear one of the medal winners is on PEDs.

You mean “especially in cross country skiing”. Finland’s whole team was disqualified a few years ago during championships in Finland which was especially embarrassing, with some guys suspended for life and some now back among the top after a rebuilding. Some individual athletes who won medals got caught too. But yes, Russia and a Austria also had doping scandals in biathlon.
