Trade? Trade who?
I know I don't have to tell anyone who follows NBA-related news that this time of year is dominated by trade rumors, speculations, exaggerations, and misdirection. As fans of a team that is struggling (compared to lofty expectations), although for completely legitimate reasons, we are obviously not immune to the sensationalism that is the NBA trade deadline.
I hear far too often that the Blazers must make a move. If we made any move it would be completely senseless unless it benefited us for the long term, not to just get into the playoffs or have a legitimate shot at the second round. That would just be a move toward mediocrity. If we want to make a move for a quality player with long-term benefits we will have to part with more than just expiring contracts, injured players, cap space, and draft picks. Below is a list of the three young, talented players mentioned the most in regards to trade rumors, player value perception, and the future of the franchise. I wouldn't trade any of them and have given a brief description of why.
Nicolas Batum:I admit I am drinking the Nic Batum kool-aid right now. His rare defensive abilities mixed with his athleticism, youth, and three point jump shot make him completely untouchable in my opinion. I am fully in the "future Scottie Pippen" camp with this guy and think that he, along side Brandon Roy, will be a much bigger part of our championship aspirations than many people may realize. Michael Jordan himself has gone on record making this same player comparison. Who are we to argue? Much like "His Airness" himself, Brandon Roy will need Nicolas Batum as much as Nic will need Roy.
So far I’ve been a huge fan of his, but lately I’m starting to lose faith. I’m afraid he may be all smoke and mirrors with a three-point shot. He has demonstrated terrible decision making at times and has not been able to take advantage of the extra minutes made available by all of the Blazers injuries. Some may argue he hasn’t got enough minutes but I firmly believe you have to make the coaches play you by making the most of what you get – even if it’s only 7 minutes.
I wouldn't trade Rudy (not yet, anyways) for one simple reason: he is the only player ever to win the Copa del Rey MVP twice. Ever. He is absolutley something special. As far as this years struggles go, the only thing I can think of is if he is playing too tentatively because he is looking over his shoulder for “the yank”. I can understand that but if it’s true, it’s up to him to get over it and show coach he belongs on the floor. I believe he can and that he will.
This is the part of my post that may get me shot. He is probably the one player here I would shed the least amount of tears over if he were traded. I am worried that he will turn out to be like former NBA players Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis. This is not a judgment of his character or psychological health by any means. Breaking it down to the bare bone however, he is simply an undersized, score first guard. History shows little success for this type of player, whether they are a featured piece of the offense or a complimentary player
That being said, the main reasons I'm not ready to part with Jerryd just yet is because Jerryd, unlike the players I've compared him to above, is a tireless worker who exhibits a work ethic, intensity, and focus that is hard to find and impossible to teach. I hope I'm wrong. I'm definitely not completely convinced I'm right, which is why I wouldn't trade him yet either. I will admit that there is a part of my brain, all be it a tiny one, that believes he can compliment Roy in the back court for the long haul.
In conclusion: I don't believe there is any trade that the Blazers can make worth our while that wouldn't involve one of the players listed above. I, for one, hope KP has the guts to stand-pat and not feel pressured into making a sensless trade to avoid unwarranted criticism.

Rudy Fernandez
has shown us a very little arsenal and a horrible defensive player. Maybe the injury is still bothering him this year and we should wait till he’s 100% and judge him but right now I could make better decisions than Rudy. Bayless stays in front of his men and like you said he has a great work ethic. Bayless’s achilles heel is his jump shot and his willingness to keep on shooting it. He needs to learn that he needs to drive to the hoop and draw fouls and create his own shot instead of putting the ball between his legs and taking a long jumper. I see no reason why we should even think of trading Batum.
This will sound pretty basic
But bayless needs to learn to not fade on wide open jump shots.

I vote for Jerryd
I think we should trade him for three reasons.
1) His stock is high now, meaning we can get more for him that Rudy, who’s frankly a specialist at this point (an entertaining one, but a specialist nonetheless). Although we could probably get more from Batum than any of the three, there’s a reason for that—Batum is the best out of the bunch, and we should hold on to him and build.
2) I don’t really think he can play with Roy and be as good as Batum (who can contribute with his defense) or Rudy (who can hide in the corner and throw bombs) can, and Portland is ultimately only as good as Roy is.
3) We have other point guards who can replace him. Blake is serviceable (and can play with Roy) and Miller can pass better and take over games if we need him. He is the most replaceable out of the three of them, I think.

This is easy -- Rudy
He’ s likable and a good player. But he plays really on one position. And that’s manned by an all-star.
Bayless is younger and plays 2 positions.
And the point guard spot has age and uncertanity. Age — Miller. Uncertanity — Blake a free agent.
Batum’s upside potential is just too much for him to be traded at this point.
The pecking order for these three is Batum, Bayless, Rudy.
That's our best off the ball player
Rudy needs no offense run through him to be effective, so the choice is hard.

I regretted voting for Bayless as soon as I saw the results
I would have rather voted for Nic just to be one of the cool kids.
Miller has the best contract for trading. He makes the most money, he’s the oldest, and no one likes him.

actually
next year he will have the best contract for trading, as next year it will be an expiring deal

I wasn't talking about fans
My sources tell me that no one in the NBA likes him. I heard even Miller’s pets don’t like him.
i thought miller ate all his pets?

I actually read the poll wrong and voted before I realized that it said "least" upset about trading
I will change my vote to Bayless in the thread. Just don’t like the way the guy plays, and never have in that he doesn’t make the players around him better on offense or defense. I say we move him now while his stock is still relatively high.
Both Bayless and Batum have STARTER potential for the Blazers.
Rudy has to be the most expendable. Of course, here in Portland it is easy for members of our fan to sour quickly and/or hold uber-high regard for prospects and players… that is just the nature of the roller-coaster ride we call FAN-dom.
The truth about ALL THREE of these players is that Jerryd Bayless, Nic Batum and Rudy Fernandez all have very bright NBA players. EVEN IF all three only become “specialists”… these three young Blazers all have value right now on the Trading Block… but which has LEAST LONG-TERM VALUE TO THE BLAZERS?
Rudy on the right team could be a Mega-Star. He is one of the top prospects for being a great scorer at the 2-guard, especially considering the glut of very talented young point guards in the league who want to be teamed with an off-guard who can move with out the ball, not need to dominate the ball to score, will be deadly from the outside and can help rack up assists by being a good slasher & finisher as well as an outside marksman. Rudy Fernandez WILL BE a 20ppg player with another team where he can start. And That is why Rudy should be the guy on the block… The token that we are dangling, KP needs to find a team that covets a 2 guard to compliment their ball-dominating young point guard. Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Milwaukie’s Brandon Jennings, Minnesota’s Jonny Flynn, Houston’s Aaron Brooks, Rondo from Boston, DWill in Utah, of course CP3… all of these guys will be a core center piece of NBA teams future plans. Rudy Fernandez would be a great back-court mate with any of them and more. No, I am not saying I want to trade Rudy to team up with a West. Conf. rival at all, but there are situations where Rudy would be flat out SICK! I think we need to move Rudy to the Eastern Conference and trade him to a team where they know Rudy will fit so we can get max value. New York or New Jersey would be good…
By next season we could see Portland’s starting line-up shaped up to:
PG: Jerryd Bayless
SG: Brandon Roy
SF: Nic Batum
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
FC: Greg Oden
Yeah, of course people can argue with me whether or not Bayless CAN or Should be the starter in Portland. But that is an absurd conversation because Bayless IS in the NBA and IS in the PG rotation and IS doing great things on the court. Bayless could easily take over that starting spot at any time, he is a pro and he could very well run with it. With Bayless next to Roy Portland would have the maximum minutes of getting 2nd chance points out of your guards… but JB is going to need to unleash his 3-point potential for this to be a real long-term solution. Roy can and will play next to anyone, and a back court of Roy + Bayless sounds like DYNO-MITE to me!
Nobody will really debate Nic Batum’s worthyness as a keepsake, not on this website. Batum is really going to need to continue to develop his game. Nic Batum has a bright future and he needs to be kept.
The rest of the trade other than SG Rudy Fernandez should be PG Steve Blake (simply for contract reasons, chance that Portland could resign him later) Forward Dante Cunningham, PF Jeff Pendergraph, Future Draft picks, and even Andre Miller. Although adding Miller would be a blow to this years chances, we do know that Pritchard is thinking long-term. Don’t forget KP is drafting and this team IS GROWING very nicely thanks to all this ADVERSITY. If we don’t move multiple guys we won’t even be able to sign our draft picks for next year. I don’t know who to get, but I want a beast in the paint for sure.
PG: Bayless/Mills
SG: Roy/Webster
SF: Batum/Outlaw
PF: Aldridge/Howard
FC: Oden/Pryzbilla

a healthy beast in the paint
we need a dude who drinks paint and eats glass and whose legs don’t crumble at the slightest provocation.
To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead. -- Thomas Paine, US patriot & political philosopher (1737 - 1809)
Dante Cunningham
I think Ferno is a keeper. Eventually Travis will be gone and #33 will fill that 4/3 role and bring energy, off the ball rebounding and solid fundamentals off the bench. Cunningham and LMA are the ideal forwards to play alongside Oden and Przy
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
if you trade anyone it would have to be rudy and martell or blake
Rudy has yet to show anything this year aside from being extremely inconsistent and hasnt been hitting his 3’s. Plus he is horrible at defense.
Momma.....der go dat man
if webster was on this poll
that would be a good choice, probably would have got 80% of the vote. but he wasnt a choice this time.
Flip cam FTW
Rudy
Batum is already showing his value, and I think JB has more upside. I still like Rudy though, and on the right team (maybe not Portland, but one with a faster pace and more SG minutes available) I think he could be a tremendous scoring weapon. Think JR Smith, without the mental baggage.
