… it becomes fairly obvious that the fans claiming a trade “must” happen are pretty clueless.

Forget for a moment the fact that the average fan has greater potential to be a top 5 NBA General Manager than any of the people currently holding GM positions around the league. They still are highly unlikely to have a better sense of what this team needs than one of the guys on the roster. Given that it is perhaps the best player on the roster, one who has to date demonstrated an understanding of the game far superior to most of his contemporaries (i.e guys with 3 – 4 years in the league), it it hard to argue he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

What is KP supposed to say besides that he likes this team and wouldnt mind standing pat. Do you think he would come out in public and say “Man, Howard is not cutting it as our starting center and we are in danger of missing the playoffs unless I trade some of our guys for a big man”. KP isn’t going to throw anybody under the bus in public, saying he is desperate to make a trade would be doing exactly that. Behind closed doors, my money is on him hoping he isnt forced to stand pat with our current roster. The only way he doesnt make a trade is if he can’t come up with an even remotely decent deal, which is possible. I guarantee you KP is working overtime trying to get a big….

Trade for Dalembert

I suspect you misread Mr. Pritchard greatly.

With the exception of Joel, Travis and Martell, every guy on this team Pritchard drafted or signed. And he extended both Martell and Travis. This team is one that he put together and if we are going to assume anything, it should be that he likes the team he’s assembled.

Proof of that might reside in the stories we’ve heard that KP turned down trades for Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson. Each would have had to involve some of the same young guys currently on this team. If the stories are true, it is evidence Pritchard believes in the guys he has. And if he believes in the team he has, then he’s most likely being honest when he says that he’s having a hard time envisioning a trade when the price is one or more guys in that middle box.

And KP signed Joel, to his current deal

Showing up himself at midnight the first day they could talk with Joel about it, flying to Wisconsin to meet him.

Our team is almost entirely constructed by KP, and he signed Outlaw and Marty to their current deals, so his fingerprints are all over everyone.

Um, what's he going to say?

KP is famous for saying stuff just to spread disinformation. He said the Blazers were in love with Joe Alexander. He said they had no interest in Bayless. He said they loved DJ Augustine.

He also said he likes using “smoke and mirrors” in the draft. The guy is going to say whatever helps the team, not necessarily whatever is true.

Discussing who he might be interested in pre-draft ...

… is a different kettle of fish from discussing guys he drafted or signed. A significantly different kettle.

In the first instance, he’s talking to improve his chances to get guys he wants. In the second, he’s discussing the guys he wants. In that light, what he is saying both rings true and makes a lot of sense.

You can believe what you want.

Have you seen Pritchard trade away any of the guys he wanted? It’s a pretty short list.

General Managers constantly lie.

I wouldn’t believe anything KP said about trades or the draft.

How many GM's do you know?

I would concur with the statement that GM’s may frequently dissemble.

That’s not the same as saying they lie. As for constantly lying, I find it hard to believe that someone can become a successful GM if they lied constantly.

Not a one.

But then I’m not calling any of them liars.

Hmm, okay.

First, Roy is kidding himself if he thinks we have an advantage in a 7 game series. Without a true center, we are at a disctint DISadvtantage. We can fool some teams for a game or two (see: Lakers, Denver, Dallas), but you can’t do that in a 7 game series.

Secondly, it shouldn’t surprise anybody that Roy is against a trade. It’s become painfully clear that Roy doesn’t like change. We bring in Miller, an unarguably talented point guard, and Roy can’t seem to let go of his (former?) security blanket, Steve Blake. I’m not saying being comfortable with your teammates is a bad thing, but Roy is self admittedly afraid of change (although, not in those words).

"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."

by Arby on Feb 11, 2010 4:35 PM PST reply actions

I wish people would stop saying these things about Roy.

He stated he doesn’t care if Miller starts and they were playing awesome together before Roy had to deal with the hammy. The earlier struggles were team-wide because of missing pieces and new pieces. Roy was playing out of position and even if Miller is way better than Blake there’s still an adjustment period to a new style of play. Roy couldn’t pass out to Miller for 3’s. It wasn’t because Roy didn’t like Miller it was because Miller is completely different player to Blake. Anyone who couldn’t see that Roy and Miller were finally learning each others’ preferences and play styles wasn’t looking very hard.

Not to mention over the summer Roy is often mentioning team needs and most of the time he’s right, it’s not up to him to shuffle players or acquire them.

And lastly how can you not love his confidence? Do you want him to say I hope we don’t get matched up with LA, Denver or Utah? Or should he say I hope we miss the playoffs and strike gold with Wall?

We have one of the most humble superstars in the league and some of you go after him like he’s TO.

by Bskey on Feb 11, 2010 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

You must be right.

It was idiotic of me to think Roy might know more about the NBA or what his team’s chances are than any of the super knowledgeable fans here at BE.

My bad.

I don't think there are any here who are more qualified to assess Portland's chances.

While it happens on rare occassion ...

… I have been wrong before.

If I wasn’t looking to get out early from work and get down to Portland, I’d explain why I believe Brandon Roy’s opinion should carry far more weight than any of the fans who regularly post here. The most basic one is that Roy knows what it takes to win in the NBA. Fans don’t. At least not at the level Brandon does.

Just because you know how to play the game, and win...

Doesnt mean you know what is best for the team personell-wise. Plenty of very good players in the nba have not been able to make the transition to front office type positions, Isiah, Jordan, and Elgin Baylor quickly come to mind. I am careful not to put too much credence in what a guy like Roy says about his teammates. The things that makes him such an amazing leader, could also prevent him from having the objectivity to see what is really needed. Travis Outlaw is his buddy, he loves playing with Steve Blake, of course he doesnt want to see either guy go. His confidence in his teammates and the ability to get them to rally around him is what makes him a great leader, but that same confidence might be what keeps him from seeing that trading player X for player Y may actually make the team better this year and going forward.

Does his opinion matter, of course, probably more so than any other player on the team. Is KP not going to make a trade that he thinks will improve the team because Roy is happy with the way things are? No.

Trade for Dalembert

by Rudiculous on Feb 12, 2010 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

We are not discussing building a team or being the GM.

The subject is whether or not the team we have right now is capable of making it into the playoffs and possibly advancing. An assessment of that requires a well founded knowledge of the team’s opponents. Having played against these teams, Roy’s level of knowledge concerning their strengths, weaknesses and what it takes to beat them far exceeds anything we fans have.

Brandon knows full well that being GM is Pritchard’s job and if KP does make a trade, it is unlikely we will hear Roy complain about it. All he is doing is offering the GM the benefit of his opinion. An opinion that I am saying is carries far more weight than what any fan here does.

Sure, whatever you say.

Still, it is usually a wise man that listens to the person who actually performs the job what is required to do it well, than taking his own counsel or that of someone who has never down the job.

To make the playoffs Portland has to win 17 to 20 of the remaining 27 games. Having played against those teams, Roy has a far better grasp of what is needed to beat them than any of us. Now if you want to disbelieve that, go right ahead. I have no objection to you wanting to play the fool.

Yeah.

It’s probably better just to let him walk over the Summer. Less hurt feelings that way. He can probably find a pretty good gig over seas. Maybe back up Stephon Marbury in China or something.

I highly doubt we make any moves.

KP, as active as he is on draft day, seems to be allergic to making mid-season trades. Hard to blame him. A lot of them don’t work out. But it should would have been nice to get some value for RLEC last year and Blake/Outlaw’s EC this year.

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

No One Out There!!!!!

If you really look at whats out there I see nothing that would really be better then what we have now!! Howard maybe a little long on the tooth, but the numbers and attitude he has brought to this team this year has been a lifesaver. With the injuries this year most of our tradeable assets have little value so it’s a mute point. This season my not be going in the direction we had all hoped or,but I would not trade the future fora quick fix that WILL NOT!! make us any better
