It's hard to have much to say, when...

you’re a Blake hater, and he was the best player in the game. It made for a rough first appearance, when a lot of your normal opinion ammo is rendered inert, by a guy performing that way. Next time I’m sure Blake will have a more average game, and other guys will step up, and she will be less nervous. Good luck Sophia.

That said, outside of Blake’s shooting slump earlier this year, the team still plays better with him on the floor. Even in the previous game where he didn’t score, he got points for other guys, and frustrated the hell out of Westbrook, to the point where he took a swing at him.

On what planet is Martell a better spot up shooter than Batum?

It doesn’t matter how pretty Webster’s jumper looks if it doesn’t go in

Sophia made all the arguments that I would’ve made re: Batum > Marty as the starting SF. When Roy returns, Batum will be back in the starting 5 as long as he’s healthy

But I did suggest (partly in jest, but mostly because Nate is SO predictable) how McMillian was going to start Blake at SG the other day…how do you like me now?

Well

Batum had 2 or 3 great games, and has been wildly mediocre since.

by Section323 on Feb 10, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

compared to Webster's games against Utah and L*A?

I’ll take the wildly mediocre #88. The 3 that Nic hit tonight to stop the Sun’s 15-0 run was money. Webster had an opportunity later for a dagger 3 and clanked it

Like Sophia said, Roy knows who his sidekick at SF is. Martell has just been keeping the 3-seat warm for Frenchy until Brandon gets back

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 10, 2010 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

I like Batum a lot

I just don’t understand glowing views of his offense. It’s just not that good right now. He’s had plenty of his own clanks. Maybe it will be great eventually, but right now, Martell’s is just as good.

And remember the Spurs game? That wasn’t so very long ago.

by Section323 on Feb 10, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

Batum is shooting 56% from the field and 44% from 3...

he’s also a better free throw shooter, better at driving to the hole and a better passer with a higher BBIQ.

Then you get to the defense. It’s no contest right now, and it the gap is only going to increase as Batum gets more PT and continues to mature.

by as11osu on Feb 11, 2010 12:59 AM PST up reply actions

I was talking about Martell

But Batum’s BBIQ for his age is off the charts. I’d definitely put his BBIQ up against a like aged Blake.

by as11osu on Feb 11, 2010 2:05 AM PST up reply actions

There is no BBIQ chart for Batum's to be off of

BBIQ completely subjective. I can say Big Baby has the highest BBIQ in the world an there is no evidence to prove me wrong.

by tominhawaii on Feb 11, 2010 4:16 AM PST up reply actions

I even googled it

This poll says Kobe has the highest and Tim Duncan isn’t even in the top 5.

by tominhawaii on Feb 11, 2010 4:19 AM PST up reply actions

BB IQ may not be a hard science...

…but it is something that is directly observable.

It’s obvious, for example, that Blake’s BBIQ is much higher right now than Bayless. It’s also just as obvious that Bayless’s BBIQ has gone up this season. Not dramatically, but it has gone up.

Batum has a natural feel for how to play the game that transcends his lack of traditional college coaching, hence his high BBIQ.

Dante is clearly a very high BBIQ guy, probably at least partially to being a 4 yr guy who played for a successful program with good coaching.

In contrast, Travis Outlaw is very clearly a LOW BBIQ player (and why I’d not be too sad to see him go).

How do you measure this? I’m not sure. It’s just observing over time if a player seems to be “in the right place at the right time” more often than not…and if he limits bone-headed plays.

I don’t think Batum has a higher BBIQ than Blake. In fact, I think Blake has one of the highest BBIQs in the game, which is how he overcomes a lack of natural talent to remain (an admittedly) marginal starter in the NBA. Yes, he is probably better suited as a VERY GOOD backup PG. But, he is a decent to good starting PG due to 2 things: his BBIQ and his ability to hit the 3.

by mjswoosh on Feb 11, 2010 5:28 AM PST up reply actions

Your explaination is the reason why I don't believe in BBIQ

You gave examples for high BBIQ and then you didn’t give an example for Outlaw having a “LOW BBIQ”. I just think there is experience and learning fundamentals.

Zach Randolph is playing better this year because of experience, Cunningham is good because of experience, and Outlaw never learned all the fundamentals because he’s always been able to out jump his opponents. Even if Outlaw knows the fundamentals, I’m not sure that he needs all of them.

by tominhawaii on Feb 11, 2010 6:35 AM PST up reply actions

then call it "a feel for the game"

scouts use this term all the time. Batum has “it” at a young age, perhaps because his dad played the game. It’s subjective, and I doubt it can be coached. Court vision is an example of this, some PGs (like Sergio) have it, others (like Bayless) have to work harder to learn what Rodriguez does naturally

This analogy extends to musicians as well, some have innate talent, others learn by tutorial. You can hear the difference, if you’ve got an ear for that sort of thing

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 11, 2010 8:49 AM PST up reply actions

Jerryd

considering the NBA experience of the 2 players, I expect Rex to be miles ahead of where Travis is now, after he’s been in the league for 5 years. There’s also a lot more “BBIQ” required of a “PG” than a scoring forward, kind of like the difference between a QB and a wide receiver in the NFL

(and no, I don’t think Bayless will ever be a pure PG, but he is being asked to get the 2nd unit into their offensive sets, etc)

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 11, 2010 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

That makes no sense at all

That’s basically comparing Jerryd’s BBIQ now to Travis in his second year. If I asked between Juwan and Outlaw, you wouldn’t have compared Juwan from his sixth year in the NBA, you would go off of this season. (I’m not using that example to go off topic about Juwan’s BBIQ.)

Bayless had trouble last night getting the ball past half court in 8 seconds and he is a guard. Travis was in games last year instead of Rudy because of his defense and Blake plays instead of Bayless.

by tominhawaii on Feb 11, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

well, if you want me to compare them as they are right now

Bayless has below-average BBIQ for a PG and Outlaw has average BBIQ for what he is, a scoring forward

But we’re talking apples and oranges, here. The thing that concerns me is the small amount of improvement that Outlaw has made over the years in learning team defense and rebounding skills, considering how those “little things” are so important to a playoff-contending team’s rotation players.

My take has been that Outlaw was OK when the team was rebuilding, because they needed his bench scoring. But now as the Blazers are a playoff contender, they’ll need backup players who will consistenly box out their opponents, make smart decisions with the ball and not miss rotation assignments on defense. (I like what I’ve seen from Cunningham in those areas, and he’s a NBA “baby” when compared to #25)

I have no idea if Jerryd will raise his level of “feel for the game” to become a starting guard for Portland and play alongside Roy as the team competes for the finals. I do like the progress I’ve seen from him this year, however. I think he’s shown the aptitude and certainly the work ethic (especially when compared to Travis’ summer workouts…) to improve his overall game. But he’s got a long way to go and the team can’t afford to be as patient with him as they were with Jarret Jackand Sergio in their formative years (which is why your buddy ’Dre was signed last summer…and why Blake gets consistent PT)

As I’ve said many times, Portland doesn’t develop young PGs particularly well (going back ’way before Nate) so Jerryd has his work cut out for him if he wants to be the best “PG” Portland has drafted since Porter. Terry had 2-3 years to get his NBA game together before he was an NBA finals PG in ’89-90

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 11, 2010 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

the problem with your disbelief in this concept...,

…is that you seem to think that all players have the same capability to improve based on an experience metric, which just isn’t true.

Some players just have a better NATURAL, feel for the game than others. Just like some guys are much better QBs because they process information quicker.

100 people who had the same experiences as Peyton Manning growing up will not produce 100 Peyton Mannings.

Experience plays a role in developing BBIQ, yes. But so does innate talent. As two4larue put it aptly, “feel for the game” is a good way to think of it.

Regardless of what you call it, it is directly observable.

Someone like Outlaw clearly has a lower basketball IQ than even Bayless at equal stages of their careers, even taking into account that they play different positions.

Let’s pull out a bigger past example: Clyde Drexler is widely considered one of the best players to ever play. But, it can also be said that at times he would do bone headed stuff on the court and even in crunch time. Cliff Robinson is another example.

In fact, the original Rip City Blazers team had a rep for being extremely talented, but on closer inspection they were not the highest BBIQ group (Terry Porter and Danny Ainge excepted). It was arguably a lack of BBIQ, not a lack of physical talent, that prevented them from winning the championship. Or, rather, the fact that their opponents…the Bulls…had MJ…and an overall BBIQ that was noticably higher.

Like i said, this isn’t quantifiable necessarily. But it is observable. You can observe Travis Outlaw and its clear he does things that are not particularly high BBIQ actions fairly often. By comparison, Roy is a vastly smarter player who rarely makes bone headed decisions.

by mjswoosh on Feb 11, 2010 11:57 PM PST up reply actions

I still think it is poppycock

Google Basketball IQ and it’s all Kobe stuff

It’s all completely subjective. Outlaw is still getting knocked down for not being the best basketball player to come out of high school to the jail blazers

Someone like Outlaw clearly has a lower basketball IQ than even Bayless at equal stages of their careers, even taking into account that they play different positions.

What does Outlaw’s play 4 years ago have to do with Bayless this year? Outlaw from 4 years ago isn’t the guy who is on the roster now.

BBIQ is is simply a term used by people to say Nic is really good when they don’t have the stats to prove it and a way to bash Outlaw. Hardly anyone ever brings up BBIQ when it comes to other players.

by tominhawaii on Feb 12, 2010 2:12 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I'm sorry but I happen to know from experience that you're just flat wrong...

Those of us who have actually played basketball at a high level (above high school) know BBIQ is as true of a concept as any other.

Sports psychology is inherently nebulous. Things like “the zone” exist as we see them played out, as we experience them. Such is the case with BBIQ.

Some players have a natural mental “feel”. Others have less, but can make up for it somewhat through experience, hard work, and coaching. Others are hopeless and better be supremely physically gifted or they aren’t going anywhere.

Some rare players have all of the above. Guys like Jordan, Kobe, etc…have the whole kit n kaboodle: supreme physical AND mental gifts, natural feel for the game, burning will to win, work ethic, good coaching, great offensive/defensive systems designed to maximize talent and minimize weaknesses, etc…

All of those factors come together to equal what we as fans perceive on the court as BBIQ. Again, much of what comprises this is as much a mental talent as it is a physical one.

The fact that you are arguing this concept doesn’t exist indicates to me that you’ve never really played sports.

by mjswoosh on Feb 17, 2010 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

Outlaw's BBIQ hasn't developed. He stagnated. Batum is clearly the "smarter" player already.

This isn’t about “bashing” anyone. This is about directly observing a player’s propensity to choose the right or wrong “path” at the thousands of little forks in the road you run into when you are playing a basketball game.

Some players more often than not choose the correct path. Others make mistake after mistake.

This isn’t a stat competition. A player’s stats are irrelevant when talking about BBIQ. If all we care about are stats then Blake would be one of the dumbest guys in the league, when in fact he has one of the highest BBIQs out there (and why we will miss him on the squad more than we will miss Outlaw).

by mjswoosh on Feb 17, 2010 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

In fact, the original Rip City Blazers team had a rep for being extremely talented, but on closer inspection they were not the highest BBIQ group (Terry Porter and Danny Ainge excepted). It was arguably a lack of BBIQ, not a lack of physical talent, that prevented them from winning the championship.

I totally agree with this. When he was a Blazer, Ainge said that the thing he hated the most was to be out-smarted, and he bolted for Phoenix when he had the opportunity. Adelman was a player’s coach back then, his offense was simple and the team relied on athleticism and offensive rebounds. Clyde didn’t work hard in practice, while Jordan treated every scrimmage like it was game 7. That’s what makes the difference between pretty good and champion, its the constant attention to detail and the desire to dominate your opponent

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Feb 12, 2010 7:02 PM PST up reply actions

preposterous

They didn’t win a championship because they lost to three superior teams in 1990, 1991, and 1992. I resent the notion that they lost because they were stupid – they lost because they went up against Isiah, Magic, and Jordan. You may have heard of these three guys. – Elgin

GOP in HD

by 22baylor on Feb 15, 2010 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

Did you actually ever WATCH them play???

The Blazers were PHYSICALLY dominant…more talented as a SQUAD from 1-12 than any other team during those 3 years.

They lost because their MENTAL talent wasn’t as sharp. It was easily observable in their play and in the timing of certain things as they played out during those series.

The 1991 team was ironically the best of those 3 seasons. They lost to a physically inferior Lakers team because Magic’s group out-smarted them.

Contrary to what some of you people think, moxie, smarts, and mental endurance are just as much a “talent” as vertical leap.

The notion that BBIQ doesn’t exist to some of you is laughable and only goes to prove that most of you have never played basketball at a high level. If you have played in college you would immediately know that concepts such as “the zone” and BBIQ most certainly exist. I’ve experienced those things myself. And seen them at work/play on countless occasions.

by mjswoosh on Feb 17, 2010 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

two4larue...you nailed it. Exactly right.

Jordan actually talked about this a bit in his book “Rare Air”. He spoke mostly glowingly of Clyde as a worthy opponent, but made special note that Clyde was relatively easy to guage early in a game based on how he was shooting. He said that if Clyde missed a couple shots he’d keep on shooting and shoot himself out of the game instead of picking up his game in other areas to help the team. It was Clyde’s primary weakness as a player and it’s how Jordan exploited him as an opponent in the finals.

No matter how much of a Blazer fan I might be, I’m not a blind homer. That Rip City squad was supremely PHYSICALLY gifted. But, they were “dumb” when compared to the execution of the Bulls teams during that era.

Which goes to show how flawed it is

Kobe has the highest BBIQ? I’d say his freakish athleticism and touch has more to do with his game than IQ. If his IQ was so high, he would never have those nights where he’s taking 30+ attempts and shooting below 40%. You can’t have a player that is both displaying a high BBIQ and petulant at the same time.

by superfly05 on Feb 12, 2010 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

Er, why not?

Kobe’s petulance is a character flaw. It has nothing to do with how intelligent he is. Would he be greater if he weren’t an immature jerk? Sure. But his greatness is very much a result of his intelligence and his application of that intelligence towards the game of basketball.

If you watched the HBO program this year (filmed by Spike Lee) which followed Kobe for a day on & off the court, you could have no doubt that Kobe Bryant is an extremely intelligent—as well as talented & driven—hoopster.

And this is from someone who can’t stand the guy. Kobe Bryant—ugghh.

I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.

by hurryup09 on Feb 13, 2010 4:03 AM PST up reply actions

fair enough

but basketball IQ is useless if you don’t apply it, which is what I was saying. So Kobe is smart enough to know he shouldn’t take so many difficult shots, but he does it anyway, yet people will say Travis has a low BBIQ for taking the same kinds of shots.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not at all saying Travis and Kobe are remotely equal, or that Kobe doesn’t have a high BBIQ. But I am saying that it’s difficult to declare someone to have the highest BBIQ in the league if they don’t have the discipline to apply it every minute they are on the court.

She did good.

Defended her views and opinions (and some facts) well and started speaking up more as the show went on.

I thought she did well

and came out of it without any apparent injuries which is good because she’s accident prone…
I’m glad for BF1

Sophia did really well

obviously nervous at first but she had great composure. Got it rolling from the middle to the knockout punch at the end by pwn’ing Holton.

It made Talking Ball entertaining and interesting.

Great job!

Pants on the ground.

Hilarious. Glad I got the beginning of Talking Ball on my DVR -- and decided to watch it tonight.

I was wondering what BF1 was going to say about Blake after he had his best outing of the season, but she far exceeded my expectations.

The NBA. Where delicious irony happens.

I can't tell whether

a) you’re surprised that I lapsed into a bit of net-speak (I was using that word circa 1984 in emails, and old habits are hard to break)
b) you’re amazed that I couldn’t be more definite (I lied. I almost certainly would NOT)
c) you’re shocked that I was not immediately more helpful and proactive. (I’m basically lazy. Too lazy to spend the time figuring out how to do that, especially if it requires creating a new user name and password.)

Regardless, I say to you: tough bananas.

Seeing Bustabucket.com under her name

instead of blazersedge.com reminded me of the feeling i got when clyde wore a houston rockets jacket instead of a blazers jacket on the 50 greatest nba players of all time picture.

I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.

But she did give a shoutout to BE, and mentioned her own blog if only in passing, so all is good in cyberspace.

I think we’re all friends here, she just gets a front page voice to far less people on Bust a Bucket. We all know who runs this Blazer blogosphere, BaB is just trying to get a small piece of the proverbial Blazer pie. Mmmmm pie.

I was way better than Durant

Durant is a great scorer and is improving as an overall player. Please look at my stats from 1962. I was a superior ballhandler and overall scorer and I was way, way better at rebounding and defending. Just sayin’. – Elgin

Good job, BlazerFan1

Nice to see a Blazersedger representing. Most of us would have been rendered speechless by the cameras & bright lights (not to mention the former Blazers on the panel).

Oh, she did fine--she loosened up as the show went along

Do you think you’d have done better?

As for her opinions, OK—even Blake haters needed to give him props for last night’s performance. Come on: he completely outplayed Steve Nash, one of the best point guards in the league. If Blake played like that more often, most of us would be happy to see him be a Blazer for life.

Maybe not BlazerFan1. But that’s OK; differing opinions keep things interesting around here. That plus Mortimer & Tominhawaii.

I saw a smile...

I thought she looked great, perhaps a little nervous. I totally agree with here comments on Blakes performance against a team that is not known for defense, big deal. I also agree with her saying Batum should be starting.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
