Because there were forty more homicides than suicides?

National Journalism is nothing but lies anyways. I mean, look at ESPN.

It creates a clear distinction between bombings like ETA, and those of Middle Eastern countries where the perpetrator actually kills themselves in the process.

What Fox is doing is called “spin” in England. Twisting the truth to suit your agenda.

I was under the impression that it was called communication.

Everyone spins. That’s how one gets the advantage.

Sadly it is just standard communication, some of it is more transparent than others.

I personally find it a shame that I can’t just listen to the news without finding a subtext to it.

Silver linings. Silver linings. Silver linings.

Too true.

CNN, Fox, C-Span, The Frostbite Falls Observer, Blazers’ Edge, it’s all the same.

Si

Batum’s NBA dunk of the night made the front page but not Websters.

I think that’s what is fun about this site. Ben takes sides and some folks are drawn to him because of that and Dave tries to be objective and some folks are drawn to that. Most people come here to be with others that agree with them, and Dave and Ben pretty much blanket the field in regards to the Blazers.

by tominhawaii on Feb 1, 2010 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

When one finds the Democrats and Republicans equally reprehensible,

then there really isn’t much of a difference between CNN and Fox. Both are out to trash the other side, not report the news. But they both tell the people who watch them what they want to hear.

by bow4meow on Feb 1, 2010 11:53 AM PST up reply actions

It is all semantics anyway

Both are terms are accurate…..if you you want to focus on how it is different from other bombings, you would go with “Suicide Bomber”….on the other hand if you are trying describe the motives of the bomber, you go with “homicide bomber” (ie they didn’t strap that bomb on to commit suicide…if suicide was the goal, they probably woulda went with sleeping pills or something).

BTW

I was allergic to eggs as a child…so I couldn’t eat mayo…I would die… so we ate MW in my home. Then as I got older I outgrew the allergy but still preferred MW (but would eat mayo on things like Whoppers and so forth).

PS I do not eat eggs in any form other than as ingredients for other dishes

The four suits now used in most of the world — spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs — originated in France in approximately 1480. The trèfle (club) was probably copied from the acorn and the pique (spade) from the leaf of the German suits. The names “pique” and “spade”, however, may have derived from the sword of the Italian suits.14 In England, the French suits were eventually used, although the earliest decks had the Italian suit

big trucks.... posh

Several years ago I bought a sweet jet black F150 , I mean it was sweet. No joke, but the NEXT DAY my boss (who was a little Napolean) drove in and parked next to me in his new metallic orange F250. Since I saw him pull in and park I commented “nice truck” and he said he had to turn in his old one because he couldn’t allow an employee to drive a nicer truck then he had. oh………kay.
Beauty thing is a few days later the head honcho at the place drove in his brand new tricked out F350 and parked next to him who was parked next to me. My boss moped around all day.

by tominhawaii on Feb 1, 2010 11:19 AM PST up reply actions

I gave up on him and I don't even try to defend Blake.

I can handle folks wanting to trade them for better players, that “get ride of Blake” post was pretty dumb though.

by tominhawaii on Feb 1, 2010 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t defend Blake, unless he has a good game and people still complain that he played at all… LMA I feel I’m realistic about, he has his faults, and if he netted us a bosh or someone of that level in a trade, I’m all for it… but I hate to see him getting bashed after he played a decent game just cause he doesn’t perform at a Roy level in the absence of Roy

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

You spelled it out well there

I have no idea.

The Blazers are probably playing better than they should, but Roy is still lame for not adjusting his game to Miller, Nate is still an idiot for not starting Miller, and Blake is dimwitted buffoon. (Don’t forget Roy smiled about being an all star.)

Complaining about Juwan Howard also kind of bothers me. It’s like you had two nice SUV’s in the garage and someone crashed both of them and now you’re driving around in your dad’s old work truck. I’d complain about it too, but more in a longing for my nice SUV’s and about the jerks who crashed my SUV’s. I could only complain about the condition of the old truck for so long because it gets old fast.

by tominhawaii on Feb 1, 2010 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, the Juwon complaining died down somewhat once Pendy started those 2 games and everyone saw that he just isn’t ready yet… though it’s picking up steam again with people wanting LMA to slide to center and start Dante… cause you know, positions and offensive sets are easy to pick up and learn the intricacies of when you have a day off between games

I really don't like him and his fanboys

I wasn’t happy when he came here, I didn’t like his complaining to the national media about coming off the bench, then yelling at the coach. He really is a jerk, but because fans were desperate for a free agent or trade and he’s better than Blake fans jumped on his bandwagon and started trashing everyone but Miller.

All the crap I had to read about Nate being an idiot for not starting Miller and the crap that has been said about Blake all year is enough to make me not like Miller. I’m happy he’s helping the team win and with all the injuries, I’d rather he was traded and Bayless started.

Miller isn’t making anyone better and he’s just a patch. I still want to make the playoffs, just not at the cost of developing Bayless (if he’s the future).

by tominhawaii on Feb 1, 2010 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

well that clears up that

I also was not overjoyed initially with Miller, but have grown to appreciate him over the season. I don’t see him as a jerk, he comes across as a very gentile kind of person who I think was frustrated by his role and maybe rightfully so. I still don’t see him as a long term answer but I guess KP thought on a healthy team Miller may be the piece that carries the team into at least the second round, something I doubt Bayless could do. I still think he’ll get traded. Nobody calls out Nate and lasts long. His big game only adds a little more intrigue to his value.

That Princeton team ended up as high as #8 in the polls and got a 5 seed. They won their first round game against Bill Bayno-coached UNLV and then lost to Michigan State. If Cornell runs the table, they could get a seed as high as an 8-9. Any loss to an Ivy team would be damaging, although @ Harvard would hurt a lot less than any other loss. Realistically, Cornell is more like the 40th-50th best team in the country, but this is still cool. Hopefully they don’t get too cocky now.

Link: Sources: 96-Team March Madness Is "Done Deal"

Quote:

An ESPN source said, "It’s a done deal with the expansion of the tournament. Depending on how soon a (TV) deal is done, the added teams could start next year. The NCAA confirmed that bidders would be interested in 96 teams, so they’re going with it."

Another ESPN source confirmed to me that the network was in the formative stages of pondering a bid for the expanded tournament.

John Ourand and Michael Smith of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL reported this morning that if the NCAA opts out of its current broadcast rights deal with CBS, the governing body will consider, "expanding from a 65-team tournament to either 68 or 96 teams."

The NCAA-CBS broadcast rights contract has three years and $2.131 billion remaining. SBJ reports, "the NCAA has until Aug. 31 to exercise its right, though it hopes to conclude the process much earlier."

A 68-team field would add three games to the current 65-team format, and a 96-team field would add 31 games to the tourney.

It would be too bad for teams like PSU

Those smaller teams at least get a reasonably glamorous date with a team like Kansas. If Kansas had a bye, then PSU (presumably still one of the worst teams in the draw) would play one of the best non-bye teams, which would be a team rated 65-75th on the board. A very average team—wouldn’t even be that much of a headline to knock them off.

I guess it would be kind of like tennis, where you would have “qualifiers,” but I can’t see how having like an NIT round would improve ratings. Who wants to watch that garbage?

by atomiccafe on Feb 1, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

i maintain

Matthew Yglesias had it right.

Whenever I debate the “merits” of college basketball with a fan, it becomes clear that I’m missing the point. I want to see quality basketball played by quality basketball players. For that, the NCAA tournament is too far off to even bother trying to improve. But what the fans like is the “madness”—so many teams! so many games! anything can happen! What’s needed, clearly, is more madness and expansion to a 128 team pool. Yes, it will further diminish the talent pool, but that’s the point. To prevent things from taking too long, the new, supercharged first round will consist of 25 minute games, which heightens the odds of the much-vaunted upsets. And, yes, that means that simple bad luck could wind up with a good (by college basketball standards) team getting knocked off by radically inferior competition, but that’s what makes it so exciting.

He goes on to propose they should throw in a few WNBA teams and such.

by atomiccafe on Feb 1, 2010 11:52 AM PST up reply actions

one other thing

Is it possible that NCAA hoops is trying to cash in now because of uncertainty surrounding the NBA age limit and short term college hoops stars? If the age limit goes to 20, more guys might start looking to go the Jennings route, because going to college would mean 2-3 yrs of lost income instead of just one. The NCAA is coming off some banner years benefiting from the age limit (Oden/Durant, Derrick Rose [ha], and John Wall). So maybe they are trying to lock in some dough now before future uncertainty.

one thing to point out is that most NCAA tourneys have a higher % of teams get it

i don't see that for Oakland.

Texas maybe, but they are always the same team: all offense, mediocre at best pitching. And Vlad is way past his prime. Anaheim got way worse. Seattle seems to be the only team that got much much better. I think they could win 92 games or so.

by DrivetheLane on Feb 1, 2010 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

Be careful of underestimating Oakland.

They’ve got a very, very talented pitching staff. Their pythagorean record was 81-81. Seattle’s was 75-87— they won a very unsustainable number of close games.

That scouting report of Texas is way old news. They were basically a league average offense last year (slightly below average actually) and a well above average pitching staff once you account for their park.

I think Seattle is a definite contender, but they aren’t the big favorite you seem to think.

Roads to Freedom by Robin Trower

Roads to Freedom

A gypsy sings, of birds with broken wings
and painted wheels that never roll
Who hears the sighs? Who stole this paradise?
Who took the fire from his soul?

And where are the roads to freedom?
Where is the life his father knew?
Where is the love, where is the joy
and tell me, where are the roads to freedom?

Now truthful life, who hears the soldier cry?
He was a hero of the war
But no one comes near, he sheds a lonely tear
and wonders what it all was for

And where are the roads to freedom?
Where is the life his father knew?
Where is the love, where is the joy
and tell me, where are the roads to freedom?

And where are the roads to freedom?
Where is the life his father knew?
Where is the love, where is the joy
and tell me, where are the roads to freedom?

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 1:54 PM PST up reply actions

I think it's best to MOSTLY ignore how much they make

And just look at what their game and actual production are.

That’s where I’m disappointed with LMA… I don’t wanna have a bad contract that hamstrings us, but LMA’s contract doesn’t do that. He can make whatever he wants, it isn’t how we should judge him.

His PLAY is what we should worry about, and what worries me.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

Well said.

I’m not worried about his production in relation to his contract. I just want to know if he’s our long-term PF solution. He’s young, has a good attitude, and is tradeable, since he already puts up numbers, and has plenty of room to improve.

Zach Randolph has given every team hope that they might get a big guy who eventually sees the light.

by Timmay! on Feb 1, 2010 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

I’m less worried about his play than a lot of people… 1. because he has shown flashes of figuring things out lately that don’t show up in the stats (like defensive rotation) 2. because he has shown a willingness to learn 3. cause when we have a center his deficiencies are much less glaring… mostly I’m thinking of doing something cause so many main pagers keep talking about him not earning his contract

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

I figured you were less worried

And I don’t think it’d be such an issue if we’re healthy.

BUT, his shrinking under pressure and apparanent unagressiveness combined with no improvements or changes in his game make me question whether he’ll be good fit with Roy and Oden… because they need someone who does the lil’ things, not be someone THEY have to compensate for.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

I think he’s just learning the little things… he’s never had to do them before this season really… certainly not in college, and up until this season he was really the solid #2 option with Roy in the game… I look at him learning that move where he brings the ball up through the defenders arms as a little thing he learned along the way… he didn’t do it his first year, but he added it along the way in year 2.. now we need him to learn other little things like defensive position and establishing himself on the block… I think he can get there, but in theinternet age it will never be fast enough for a lot of people

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

I think he was a better defender last year and the year before

Not just his block rate plummeting, but his aggressiveness and focus has been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down.

Hopefully it’s just a stretch of play we’ll forget later on, but it makes me wonder if he’s the right fit… because he won’t be our #2. He’ll be our #3 even if he elevates his play. I wanna see him do stuff that suits that type of role and fits good next to Roy and Odie.

I’m fine with his rebounding never being great because of Oden (but it’s an example of our main guys compensating for his weaknesses, when you’d rather LMA did some stuff to compensate for Oden and Roy to make THEIR lives easier). I am not fine with playing weak, mentally and physically, and not playing active roaming defense.

I think it'd be more realistic to expect that

If we had seen SOME sign of it improving the last few years.

I don’t think we NEED him to be able to drive past people, but it sure would be nice.

To me, it’s tough to expect a guy to do stuff he has never really done before— not even a lil’ bit.

#52

Are there PF’s out there besides Bosh who drive to the basket regularly?

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

A few

Amare, Josh Smith, Crash, Horford can, Bargnani… pretty much all the new-wave guys that LMA can usually defend on the move, but he can’t take them on the move on offense.

I dunno why his dribbling isn’t strong enough at this point; some guys just can’t do it. Cabby has pointed out his lack of flexibility, and he is stiff with the ball and his movements so perhaps that is part of it.

I mean, we don’t want him doing a crossover dribble and breaking down defenses— just using his quickness to dribble twice past his man. He’ll get to the line, score easier, etc.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

I thought Brgnani was more of a spread the floor guy, and I always considered Crash and Smith more 3 that can play 4 like Outlaw than 4 that can play 3… Amare’s a good one, and Horford too, forgot he drove as much as he does

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

It's not like Horford drives from the 3 point line

He doesn’t do it a LOT since he doesn’t get a lot of touches… it’s a very simple, face up and try to get past your guy and score or get fouled. From well within LMA’s shooting range.

Dirk is another guy.

You’re right, Crash and Josh Smith are SF types who play PF, but that’s a lot of New Wave PFs.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I’m not disputing that LMA doesn’t dribble well at all… I just don’t see a lot of 4’s out there who do I guess

#7, #10, #25, #52,

by The Arkitect on Feb 1, 2010 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

The good ones use it to get to the line

Bosh shoots a LOT of jumpers, but he puts it on the floor to get to the line.

Dirk, KG, Bosh, Gasol, I mean… pick a star PF, they put it on the floor at least a LIL’ bit.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:23 PM PST up reply actions

ODEN put it on the floor more than LMA has

To get past his defender for the score.

LMA can do it, but opts for the easier jumper or fadeaway.

Can LMA make this basic change? I hope so.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

Are they doing lane agility tests in pre-draft camp with or without the ball?

LaMarcus had a 12.08, which isn’t totally bad for a PF but not great either. He ranks above e.g. Al Horford (12.15), but far behind guys like David Lee (10.80) or Granger (10.84) or the pretty stiff-looking Psycho T (11.12) or Amare (11.13).

by Norsktroll on Feb 1, 2010 2:22 PM PST up reply actions

I would say

He is definitely quick enough and fast enough, but for some reason he has never shown the ability or WANT, to face up and take 1 or 2 dribbles past his guy.

He is certainly long and quick enough, even if he isn’t explosive.

Plus, the way guys gotta play defense, just pick a side to drive, LMA, and get your body into ‘em if ya don’t get past ’em.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:24 PM PST up reply actions

Also

I also think LMA is quite a bit more athletic than his pre-draft combine stats suggest. He doesn’t look very good in that camp.

Monta is another guy who comes off slow and unathletic at that camp.

#52

by Name's Ash on Feb 1, 2010 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

From his DX profile

Still a definite threat, but would be a nightmare to defend if he improved that part of his game and became merely a respectable threat from three point range. Just as efficient with a hand in his face as he is wide open from the perimeter, and more efficient after a dribble than he is from a stand still –a testament to his shot-making ability. Very capable ball handler for a near 7-footer. Almost never turns the ball over in relation to most players near his high usage level. Doesn’t get to the line at a very high rate for his skill level, since he makes most of his moves going away from his defender.

by Norsktroll on Feb 1, 2010 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

Offensively

He really doesn’t need to make huge changes to be very effective. Just would be nice to see some sort of positive direction towards making those changes.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 2:40 PM PST up reply actions

I think it is almost all flexibility, as you note above. He can’t get low enough to the ground, so his dribbles have to go four feet to hit the ground and bounce back up. Bosh gets down low, which allows for far greater control and speed.

#52 #10 #25 #7

by Cablinasian on Feb 1, 2010 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

I think, as far as driving to the basket goes

He really does shy away from contact, so he doesn’t initiate the contact himself most times, which is a big part of driving 2 dribbles to the basket.

I think he has the handles to do that basic move, but shies away from it or isn’t comfortable with it for whatever reason.

I think his flexibility is a part of it, but we don’t need or want him to be a strong ballhandler… just a guy who can do some basic offensive moves when facing up, instead of just shooting it.

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 1, 2010 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

What are the most snubbed players in All Star history? Players who were consistently good to great, but was never selected to an All Star game.

Andre Miller is currently a Blazer, and could easily be on the list. He and Rod Strickland are the only players who led the league in assists for a full season in the last 20 years, and never made an ASG.

"in what world is broy better than monta?"

How about the REAL world? Roy is much more efficient than Monta, for one. His %s are 48-35-79, compared to Monta’s 46-29-75, and Roy scores 23 PPG on 17 FGA, while Ellis scores 26 on 22 FGA. Monta also averages 4.1 Turnovers to Roy’s 2.2. And while Monta does average slightly more points and assists(5.6 – 5.0) than Roy, Ellis plays almost 4 more MPG, and the Warriors play at a much higher pace than the Blazers. Also, Roy’s PER (Player Efficiency Rating) is 22.6, compared to Monta’s 17.1. I think the most telling stat would have to be Win Shares, where Roy has totalled 6.2 this season, and Ellis just 1.2. Finally, Roy was selected over Ellis by the coaches, not the fans, which clearly means he is the better player.

by L-TrainFTW! on Feb 1, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Ellis is the player with the 6th most points, which seems to confuse fans who mainly look for scoring numbers

The same phenomenon applies to Durant

He is obviously extremely good but his absurdly high scoring numbers cause people to overrate him a little while paying less attention to his other numbers.

same with Melo

wow i was just gonna post this

Its more than just a typo. i think he did it on purpose.

Miller is the 2nd best player on the Blazers? Seriously, you featured this post because you believe this or because you’re trying to get a reaction? Miller goes for 52 against a soft team, and you think he will consistently do this? No way; this was a fluke; Miller will never do this again. Aldrich is supposed to be the 2nd best player on the Blazers. Since Oden was drafted, it’s been about the big 3, right? Roy, Aldrich and Oden. Aldrich’s personality is too passive and “nice”; he doesn’t have the killer instinct of power forwards like Garnett, David West, Carlos Boozer, or even Carl Landry. When was the last time you saw Aldrich get mad, put his body on the floor, get a technical foul, or foul a guy real hard who’s going to the basket to send a message? When he missed that 3 point attempt at the end of regulation at Dallas, he SMILED; and was high fiving teammates on the way to the bench. If that was Jordan, he would have been angry. Why is Aldrich smiling when he missed the shot. When our #2 guy is smiling and passive, you can bet, that it gets passed on to the rest of the team. The team has no fire, no desire to get better; they will be happy getting to the playoffs, and a quick exit in round 1; even with Roy and Oden, this team needs some players like Ariza who will put their body on the floor and dive for loose balls and not be happy about missing shots.

no, no etsey. I’m not really comfortable selling my work, yet. I feel like i have a long ways to go before I’m ready for that. I sort of thought that only a few people would want a shirt. I asked on facebook, and got nearly twenty replies, so I’ve been busy ever since. I’ve long run out of my supply of shirts and had to get more. But, when this is all said and done, I’ll have done like 15 unique shirts, in really short time. The result is the shirts and my style is evolving. I might sell some when I do another set of shirts, maybe late February. As of right now, I haven’t started any new paintings—I’ve been just painting over the top of old canvases, including that roy one.

If the NBA would introduce a hard salary cap (beginning in 2011, but some exceptions for a few years or so) would that help or hurt the Blazers?

I would suppose it might help that teams like the Lakers can’t fill up the roster with high salary players and free agents anymore. On the other hand it would hurt our ability to retain all our young guys, especially with Roy and LaMarcus and potentially Oden eating up a lot of that cap.

by Norsktroll on Feb 1, 2010 3:00 PM PST reply actions

We’ve always spent more than the Lakers, they get players because of franchise history and location, not because of pay.

It depends

I can’t imagine the NBA would end the policies that help allow a team to keep the player they drafted, so if that’s the case, it’ll increasingly be important to have a GM who knows how to draft well.

I know everyone says you need like two years of data for it to become “reliable.” But in what sense does it become “reliable” at all. It obviously becomes more stable at some point: new numbers don’t impact it as much, and you can control more easily for the 9 variables (the other players on the court). However, I’ve seen no indication that even with that much data, +/- in the past will actually predict future +/- (witness the Durant/Henry Abbott thing: does anyone actually believe Durant went from like the worst player on the Thunder to a top 10 player?) Or am I wrong? Is +/- actually predictive?

by atomiccafe on Feb 1, 2010 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

Durant’s case is special as he just didn’t care about defense last year. Travis lit him up in the last game and he made no move to stop him. So that kinda distorts the data, sure. We can’t predict motivation.

I’m not sure adjusted +/- is supposed to predict future +/-. Just like players improve on three point shooting and the like, Jerryd Bayless improved on defense and that has shown up in his numbers.

Just to my eyes, it does a good job of identifying what players are currently helping their teams win. It has to be taken with a grain of salt and interpreted correctly, of course.

I had a friend who went for a rebound and landed on another player’s foot. And boom, swelled within minutes, and in bed for over a month.

by Timmay! on Feb 1, 2010 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

The swelling always looks bad with those. My ankle bruises after the swelling goes down.

The bruises hurt less, but actually looked worse. Took about 3 or 4 days before I could come close to walking normally then. I don’t see how NBA players can play on that so quickly after it happens.

How did it happen? Last time I did that was after grabbing a rebound and turning to run up court. My leg decided to continue the trip, but my foot didn’t feel like it. The tibia is not supposed to hit the ground.

hmmmm-new rumor- Rudy Unhappy?

last paragraph

The Blazers remain interested in Haywood, since they’ve been relying on soon-to-be 37-year-old Juwan Howard at center in recent weeks. They reportedly declined a deal for Haywood that would’ve cost them Rudy Fernandez and Nicolas Batum. I know the Wizards asked for a lot there, but I wouldn’t close the books on discussions about Haywood or Fernandez. Fernandez has been unhappy with his role in Portland, according to a league source.

not next season at this rate

Garnett is falling apart, Allen is inconsistent and even more dependent on his shooting than ever and Pierce will probably start wearing down soon as well. As their Big 3 gets older they’re going to be more likely to fall apart and cease playing at an elite level. I don’t think Rondo can make up for the fall of even one of their stars let alone 2 or 3.

I think KP has been underrated during this season's run

Everyone’s busy complaining that he hasn’t made trades, but he has a great scouting organization.

by Timmay! on Feb 1, 2010 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

Juwan is a pleasant surprise

He’s not playing perfectly, but he’s playing better than we expected, when we thought he’d be a sideline cheerleader.

Andre is doing great, but I can’t give KP credit for that. He was basically the last choice available on the market, other than Iverson.

Danny Ainge: "Ummm, I'd like another lopsided deal that gets me what I want. It worked before!"
Multiple sources have told Yahoo! Sports that the Celtics are looking to trade Ray Allen for a younger, cheaper guard with an expiring contract.

In doing so, Boston would be able to find a replacement for Allen, 34, without losing him and his $20 million expiring contract for nothing this summer.

We all said this would happen

We all knew that the Celtics were going all in with the hopes of being title contenders for a few years. We all knew that their window would be short and those contracts would sting when there was no longer a shot at a ring. We’re closing in on that time now.

I would almost rather Brandon not play in the ASG

But that would basically require him to be out a while longer. If he’s feeling well enough to play, perhaps they can limit his ASG minutes.

by Timmay! on Feb 1, 2010 11:07 PM PST reply actions

I’m fine with him playing 20 minutes or whatever. He’ll be going with less intensity than most practices, probably. If he’s playing ing ames, he can go jog around for a while in an exhibition.

While working I had the game on in the background, off my DVR

I focused on Batum most of the time… before, when people said DURR DURR HE’LL BE AN ALLSTAR in that homery way where everyone on the team will be an allstar, I’d say “pish posh applesauce”. I always thought he’d become a great role player, but not get the stats or recognition or role required to be an allstar.

I now think he will be more than that. He will go beyond being a perfect glue guy, beyond a Battier type, and be an actual star. I think he and Roy and Oden will all 3 be allstar level players.

It’s not just this nice stretch, it’s how he plays in general… great defense that even n00bs can recognize, smooth and smart offensive play, versatility on both ends, athleticism and length… He’s different now. He’s playing like a smart, calm vet, and he’s only 21.

I’ve always thought highly of Batum and wouldn’t trade him for most anyone, but I think he’ll be even more than that now. I don’t think he’ll have a hole in his game, eventually, and for a 21 year old athletic marvel he barely has any right now.

What does he need to work on right now? Just getting more shots, getting the ball more, and making sure to get the ball. He’s going to be so good.

He has to wear that sleeve, he's so dumb

he’s not smart enough to know NOT to bring his arm back too far, so he wears the idiot-proof sleeve to not re-injure himself.

Baby cows would know better than to reinjure themselves if their shoulder was hurt, and this kid needs a damn sleeve. Unbelievable.

Here's some stuff on DX that I remember reading/hearing back in the day
Batum should be topping this chart, he should have taken this edition of the Euroleague by storm. Nobody, not a single player, comes close to combining his physical gifts and skill repertoire. Instead, we’re hearing an already familiar tune: inconsistency, a certain lack of character and… perhaps some softness(?) mixed in with stretches of impressive play that only a freakish athlete like him is capable of deliver.

Unlike Gallinari, Batum hasn’t been able to emerge as the team leader Le Mans needed in order to overcome a pretty forgettable regular season (2-12 record), especially considering the very poor situation they had at the point guard position and the excellent creative skills Nicolas enjoys. But he barely ever came up aggressive enough to command his team’s offensive efforts for long periods. He wasn’t fearless enough attacking the basket, and his jumper is still a work in progress. And particularly, he disappeared again from the court in crunch time with concerning regularity—which didn’t help his team avoid some painfully close losses.

However, whenever he figured things out, he really impressed with his abilities. The guy can be simply unstoppable, able to create his own shot at will, to easily set up his teammates for easy baskets, to play lock down defense taking advantage of his freakish wingspan and athleticism, and come up with a slew of highlights in the form of blocks, dunks, long-range off-the-dribble shots, etc.

Batum needs to realize that he’s the clear-cut best player on his team, and start playing accordingly. It would be a crime to waste such an impressive collage of basketball goods. Indeed, he should be a lock for the lottery, but even if we can easily project him there, there’s no solid ground to protect him from slipping, given the concerns his game draws.

It’s rare for guys to change their mindset like he seems to have done… but we will see with time.

I just don't think he can fully develop with Miller on the team

Another thing I noticed was that Nate wanted Miller to come off the bench to play with Rudy. We all know how that worked out, but Miller is still angry at Nate for that decision and Miller refuses to throw lobs to Rudy just to spite Nate.
