Should we pay greg?
I'll keep it short, since we've discussed this before, but I want to get an idea of what people think on this issue. Obviously, you wait and see what he is offered. But lets take the next step: Greg is offered a 32mil 4 yr (1 yr team option) contract. What do you do? Do you take the gamble or walk away? My take is, In light of Brandon's knees, I would actually TAKE the gamble. If there's on Brandon and no Oden, there's no championship potential. LMA + Batum are good compliments but neither is a carry for a championship team. If Oden busts, you blow it up and start trying to go young again in a few years. To me, the risk is minimal (cap is caught up, lampooned nationally), but the reward is huge, IHSH. So what do you think? Would you pay the man?

3 yrs-$18 million
I would have the last year be a team option. I would even goes as he as $24 million for 3 years (with team option for last year). I think a short term contract is in the best interest of the Blazers and Greg. For the team, it is obvious, and for Greg, if he comes back and becomes even half of what the team envisioned for him, I think he would get a big paid day.
I know, some people, will just want to cut ties with him, but Portland has invested too much money and time in him, especially, if Portland oversees his rehab again this year, and he leaves to another team and starts playing to his capability, and Portland could’ve still had him that would a hard pill to swallow. But this is definitely his last chance for him to prove he can be a healthy professional basketball player.
I don't think you can extend an offer sheet that is less than the QO
which means we’d be looking at close to $27 million for 3 years. But I might be wrong.
Ideally, we’d work something out ahead of time, where we don’t extend the QO, he becomes a UFA, and we resign him for less using part of the MLE. But, in that scenario, Greg has to really want to play here for 3 or 4 years.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
if we keep him, we pay him $8.8mill next year, only if he expects it, he could walk
but if he doesn’t then we have all offseason to extend his contract and that can be anything

Agree.= with the OP. Another poker analogy...
PTB has invested so much into playing the hand, what’s another $10 million to see the last card?
What’s $20 million? ALOT of money. But so was $80 million to a player who may not even be on the court by the end of his contract. So it’s all relative.
I’d say play the hand out.

sorry - 10,20,30 million. whatever it takes.

Yes, we should pay him...
….but not in cash. His contract should be structured so he accepts gift cards and free-plays at Bullwinkles…
