Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

It's a Wonderful Junk Drawer!

Welcome one and all to the x-mas holiday Trail Mix!

While my family in Oregon gathered last night, and assembles again today, and my lady's family and several of our friends head this way in NYC now for a day of eating, joking around and present giving, I'm really struck by the level of goodwill out there in the world and within even this withered and weary soul of mine.

Star-divide

That said, the guy at the quickymart had to buzz me in because they are keeping the doors locked today. Someone told me there are lots of holiday robberies on X-mas. Last night, I saw a guy getting arrested outside a liquor store. in the park, someone was following us a little too close and I had to talk real loud and "tough" to ward him off, on and on and one.

It's a Wonderful Life.

But some of us are George Baily on the bridge, and some of us have jumped.

Anyway ... enough Capt. Bringdown ...

This JD/Trail Mix is my escape for the day when I need it ... What you doing today?

(Oh, and if you want a horrid hymn to punk up your x-mas, enjoy this one and a free download. As always, consider yourself spammed.)

So if you see a bell today and you don’t ring it, your pretty much killing an angel.

that doesnt make sense

by not ringing it…the angel just has to wait longer to get its wings

Also, the Twin Peaks full series DVD set, and one of the Pearls Before Swine collections.

I got her the full-series companion book to the Simpsons (it’s a monster, check it out, especially the “it sucks” review at the bottom), and some new wine glasses.

Stan Van Gundy agrees

After being fined for his comments last year, this year he had this to say:

I have no comments at all on Christmas Day games. My suggestion to my staff this morning was that I think the NBA is so important to Christmas that what we really need to do is increase from five games to 10, and we need to start them at midnight on what would have been Christmas Eve and play them all through the day so there’s not a minute of Christmas Day where there’s not an NBA game on TV. Because, it’s great. The NBA is Christmas, to me, anyway. It’s what it’s all about.

SO, I have been up since 5:45 AM

opened present all morning, err, i mean watched my son open presents .. he had a blast and mommy got a few presents too! My siblings all spent the night, we had dinner here last night, stayed up until around 2 am wrapping presents, drinking home made egg nog and playing the wii. I would like the record to reflect that i won 6, counte em, 6 consecutive bowling contests and I beat them all at MarioKart … twice! I’m a boss … no , i’m better, I’m SO wesley.

My mother’s husband had a complete bile duct blockage from a huge gall bladder stone.. smh. He had surgery to remove the gall bladder this morning on emergency status. My mom says he’s resting comfortably. The mass in his chest they detected we wont know anything about for a while, tests wont come back for a few days.

So , instead of family dinner with my mom today, as we originally planned, i’m going to take a nap and then head to my aunt’s house. I painted my nails purple, and then quickly realized that with my yellow toe nail polish w/ gold sparkles on top, i looked like some nutsoe laker fan.girl. I quickly repainted my nails red. And covered up my feet. I’m blazer fan decked out, yearrrr .

Okay , merry christmas, happy holidays, etc… to all . :)

Made marbled pumpkin cheesecake.

Looks mostly good except that it cracked some. The little cupcake versions I made and tasted were AMAZING. But I can’t figure out what would cause cracking (my hunch is my oven temperature wasn’t regulated quite right). I’m going to go have dinner now, but if anyone knows what cracks cheesecakes, I’d be curious to know. I’ll probably take some pictures of the outcome once it has finished setting and before we eat it late tonight.

Merry Holidays!

Hmm . . .

I don’t know if this will help, but I’ve had good luck when I don’t overbeat the batter (make sure cream cheese is soft and everything is creamy before adding eggs). I’ve also heard that slow cooking (lower temps, for ex.) and slow cooling help.

This definitely occurred to me. I felt like I way overbeat the batter.

I’ll give this a try on the next one. Between your thoughts and jstbeachy’s link, I’m feeling pretty sure this is the issue.

I got a picture, but I’ll have to post it later/in the next junk.

I add a thin 2nd sour cream layer after the initial baking

It doesn’t affect whether it cracks, but it masks it, so it doesn’t matter.

I think your cheesecake um er...farted!
One cause is air trapped inside the batter – a result of over-mixing. Once in the oven, the air bubble expands and wants to escape from the cake. As it finds its way out of the top of the cake, it creates a crack or crevice in the cake’s surface.

I've always argued folks frequently have children for, well, selfish reasons.

A part of them wants to produce someone who’s in their image, y’know. Even a person or couple who adopts a child does so often to have someone young who they can attempt to mold after themselves.

I, however, am a selfless person — well, at least in this regard — who hasn’t produced any offspring in an overpopulated world and doesn’t want a spitting image of himself running around causing a ruckus.

"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."

by AK1984 on Dec 26, 2010 12:18 AM PST up reply actions

I'm sure many people do

Your second paragraph tends towards the ridiculous, though. It is making too many assumptions and takes a rather single-minded, self-centered view of the whole point of having children

by MadBlaze on Dec 26, 2010 12:22 AM PST up reply actions

Not having children isn’t selfless – you can’t stand children so you don’t have them, which is fine.

Overpopulation is a problem born in the developing world that can only be cured by policies such as the Chinese one child policy being spread throughout those countries.

The final part is fair I suppose. Unless you are a reasonable parent who wants their children to be more than just their own personal mini-me’s.

by MadBlaze on Dec 26, 2010 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

Admittedly, I was dabbling in hyperbole.

To be honest, my not having children is just as selfish as people who want children having them.

My mother made the most disgusting eggs I think have ever been made ever for brunch this morning.

They were called “Goldenrod Eggs”, and the name was bad enough, but paled in comparison to the actual preparation. Hardboiled eggs, separated, the whites put into a cream sauce and the hard cooked yolks powdered and sprinkled over the top of the floppy cream sauce. It almost put me off eggs entirely, and I really need to stop thinking about it but I can’t. I tried a bite and it was gnar-gnar.

I got a really nice surprise today for Xmas. When I went to India 6 years ago I took an old camera with me and spent some time doing some night photography for the first time.

I took some pics the first week I was there and not trusting anyone to develop them over there I had to wait a month and a half to see if any of them turned out. When I finally got them, I was really stoked as they turned out as good as could be expected with me never having done it, and not finding any good info on how to do it. I just guessed. Anyways I went looking for the photo’s this year and couldn’t find them anywhere. I was absolutely devastated, which as it turns out was unnecessary. Turns out I gave them to my mom and she had them framed, sorry bout the crappy quality, but I was pretty happy about this.

I did good

I got a new camera (I wanted/needed one since I love taking photos and only had my crappy cell phone camera), a scanner, a soda-making machine that adds carbonation (I remember mentioning in here I wanted one, but I didn’t mention it to my family I think… they don’t read in here, they just know I drink too much diet soda and they got a machine for themselves as well. It works nice! Just wish it made bigger quantities, because I drink a TON of fluids), and my sister made the R2-D2 hat even though I told her not to!

She didn’t finish it yet, but it’s real nice. Lemme find it and take a pic…

WOW my youngest sister is pregnant. Yikes. WAY pregnant. Sooooooo damn pregnant.

It was a good X-Mas! We had turkey, famous Mortimer family stuffing, prime rib (sooo damn good), mashed taters, chocolate bread pudding, and lots more for dinner. SO MUCH FOOD.

My preggo sister made some homemade honey butter that was really good. I’ve never had homemade butter before, I don’t think.

I got in late last night, so all I did was stay up till 5am wrapping presents, sleep till 8am to open presents, take a nap, and eat. And watch a crappy Blazer game.

I LIKE DARK GREEN

What I used to do, before I just played My Player, was when I traded a dude away from the Blazers, I changed his shoes to bright red so he’d be a Blazer for life.

It’d make them POP when the bright red clashes with their new team’s colors.

Which is nice, since they also come with stat bonuses. These come with a +8 mid-range shot bonus.

Part of the reason Minny sucks

They take timeouts early in late game situations, like no, down 1 with 90 seconds left, screwing them over in the end game.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 26, 2010 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that's tough.

There probably aren’t a lot of coaches who could. At least Walton would be as tall as Cousins, that might help a little in some strange way.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 26, 2010 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

it might, instead of physically looking down at a coach (which might have some psychological impacts) he would be forced to look eye to eye with his coach

I am 6’1", so I am used to being a couple of inches taller than most people I come into contact with. When I talk with someone who is like 6’5", I notice a difference in how I react to speaking with someone who is much bigger than I am. Perhaps Cousins feels the same way.

More importantly, it appears you are looking into buying mass quantities of canned food from the internet. Have you gotten word of a nearing apocalypse?

Just curious. I heard someone raving about it tonight, and I don’t have it locally so I looked at Amazon.

My suggestion is, make it from scratch. Takes a little time but the results are

well worth it. I’ve never eaten canned chili that’s worth opening the can.

The wife has a masterful chili she makes from scratch

This would definitely be a supplement to that, for when we don’t have time to slow-cook but are in a chili mood. We don’t normally do packaged chili.

Any chance you have a good veg chili recipe? We make it every now and then, and it’s always decent, but rarely amazing.

by dan_the_man on Dec 26, 2010 11:55 PM PST up reply actions

If my wife would write down her recipe, I'd hand it over

She does a great veggie chili. But for some reason she protects that recipe with an iron fist.

by Timmay! on Dec 26, 2010 11:59 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not strictly a vegie

But even when I was a kid I didn’t like the super-meaty version of chili. I’m more into a beany soup. I don’t have a specific secret recipe, though I’ll have to say that I almost always include chipotle chiles just for the smokiness. Also, if people are expecting something with a hamburgery texture, they’re often OK with bulgar thrown in.

I was playing a game yesterday called sequence

one of the main rules is that you aren’t allowed to talk to teammates about strategy or table talk. So sometimes you are forced to find ways around not talking to ur teammate to get ur point across. The jd has become like a digital game of sequence.

Games where you aren't allowed to talk about aspects of the game can be lots of fun

I used to play a card game in high school called Mao. It’s more or less a variation of Uno, but with many, many more rules.

This may be too Blazer related but anyway

I was thinking tonight, if ever someone wanted to argue we should’ve taken the other viable option in 2007 then now would be the time. In dire need of a big time scorer yet those posts have dried up.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful that subject isn’t coming up every two minutes but it seems like strange timing.

by MadBlaze on Dec 27, 2010 2:29 AM PST reply actions

Fair point

Given our current position, now is the first time I would get the argument that we should’ve taken him regardless of hindsight – if we knew Roy likely had an expiry date then scoring was always gonna be an issue.

by Magnum on Dec 27, 2010 2:39 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah the Greg thing is unforeseeable

Sounds like Brandon’s knees were pretty messed up by draft time though. All I’m saying is that if we knew Brandon likely couldn’t be a high usage, one-on-one guy for the long-term then Durant would make more sense as a pick.

I don’t agree with the argument, but I can understand it from this angle.

by MadBlaze on Dec 27, 2010 2:42 AM PST up reply actions

can you even imagine Roy trying to play with Durant

with all this talk about how he can’t play with Miller. At least Miller can pass the ball.

#52

by Magnum on Dec 27, 2010 2:41 AM PST up reply actions

Durant is effective without the ball though, which is the key difference

Moreso than when he has the ball in isolation or pick and roll sets IMO. Defensively, they would suck and as I value defense, I still love the Oden pick but the offensive incompatibility of Roy and Durant isn’t so evident to me.

by MadBlaze on Dec 27, 2010 2:44 AM PST up reply actions

yes, Durant is good off ball

but, clearly, not strictly an off ball player. He would command lots of touches and Roy wants the ball a ton.

In addition to everything he said, it’s important to keep in mind that the greatest security advancements in this field come from people with hacker mindsets. Maybe the banking industries’ moneymakers need to consider reinvesting in their system.

by hoodieNation on Dec 27, 2010 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah the way it works is this:

- We (mods) delete a comment.
- The comment does not disappear for anyone currently looking at the page.
- The “actions” section of that comment will then be problematic. You normally can’t rec, flag etc.
- You can still reply. But the reply will go to the bottom (I’ll call it “orphaned” for this). It’s visible to anyone still sitting and reading that page.
- People can reply to the orphaned comment and it’ll look just like normal from there.
- As soon as you hit refresh, or leave then return to the page, it’s all gone.
(In answer to the inevitable question: Yep, you can still get warned for breaking the rules in an orphaned comment thread)

This happens all the time in GDT’s, so we get to explain it regularly. It’s basically a quirk in SBN’s coding.

there is a very good chance i won’t be able to make the meet up tonight. i came down with something that the doctor said tested negative for strep, but is at least tonsillitis or something. so i have to take antibiotics. i left work and am not sure just how contagious i am but i don’t think it’s too awfully contagious but I’m not feeling too super right now. but i’ll rest up and maybe by the time for the meet up is here i’ll feel better, but i’m not holding my breath because if i did that i would die from lack of oxygen.

so i am very sorry to miss you guys tonight, it is sure to be a grand time. plus i miss my chance to meet Jake and Mortimer, which is my greatest disappointment :(

I don’t think Blount coming back was convenient for the team… it’s not like he contributed a bunch at the end of last season, plus he in no way fits Oregon’s Offense… but I can see why you would think those things… Supposedly Blount earned his way back onto the team through his actions… I tend to believe it since Masoli got the boot completely for what he did even though he was supposed to be a Heisman contender this season

3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion

by broyposse on Dec 27, 2010 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

David Stern would love that.

On the other hand, the players would go nuts. I’m not sure the Players Association would ever buy off on it. The travel is already nuts, so let’s make it worse.

Now if Stern wanted to make a new overseas division (and have them not play, like the old AL and NL before interleague), and have a championship series of US champ vs overseas champ, now we’re talking.

by Timmay! on Dec 27, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

i don’t think traveling from Spain/France/England to the east coast is that bad. Besides, the way they are pampered, they have no room to complain.

by broyposse on Dec 27, 2010 2:51 PM PST up reply actions

They'd also be coming out West, correct? And vice versa?

I suspect the players would totally revolt. Just a feeling though. “Ok, Lakers this is only a 3 game road trip, but you’re going to the other side of the Earth and back.”

David Stern would love to make it happen though. I could see him simply trying to move 4 franchises overseas instead of contracting.

by Timmay! on Dec 27, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

I think the current Euro owners would definitely be upset

I’m not sure how that would shake out. Stern would definitely need to smooth out the feathers he’d ruffle if he expanded to Europe.

by Timmay! on Dec 27, 2010 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing as I typed that.

But if I’m Nike, I’d pick 20 of my best employees in their 20s, and put them all in a room with LeBron. He gets to pick one, and that guy becomes part of his entourage. That guy is always there, not just to help keep Lebron in check, but to help shoot down stupid ideas that come from his stupid friends.

Though the hard part is keeping the guy from turning into a yes man. Perhaps rotate in a new person yearly.

by Timmay! on Dec 27, 2010 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

Yep, that would be the challenge

But hopefully Nike is able to pick guys who they know to have a backbone. Of course, the other challenges would be Lebron agreeing to it in the first place, and then Lebron and the crew actually listening to the guy.

If it worked, though, it’s probably only a 250k or so per year solution, and it could save them tons of headaches.

I'd lean in a similar direction.

A 12-15" laptop is better for lugging around and using on a desk in a classroom.

People mainly want the 17" models for the screen space. If you have an external monitor attached to it, a smaller screen is fine.
