It's a Wonderful Junk Drawer!
Welcome one and all to the x-mas holiday Trail Mix!
While my family in Oregon gathered last night, and assembles again today, and my lady's family and several of our friends head this way in NYC now for a day of eating, joking around and present giving, I'm really struck by the level of goodwill out there in the world and within even this withered and weary soul of mine.
That said, the guy at the quickymart had to buzz me in because they are keeping the doors locked today. Someone told me there are lots of holiday robberies on X-mas. Last night, I saw a guy getting arrested outside a liquor store. in the park, someone was following us a little too close and I had to talk real loud and "tough" to ward him off, on and on and one.
It's a Wonderful Life.
But some of us are George Baily on the bridge, and some of us have jumped.
Anyway ... enough Capt. Bringdown ...
This JD/Trail Mix is my escape for the day when I need it ... What you doing today?
(Oh, and if you want a horrid hymn to punk up your x-mas, enjoy this one and a free download. As always, consider yourself spammed.)

Teacher says every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.
So if you see a bell today and you don’t ring it, your pretty much killing an angel.

Also, the Twin Peaks full series DVD set, and one of the Pearls Before Swine collections.

We meant to do that, but we ended up having a busy December
On the other hand, a lot of the charities get almost no donations in January, so we’re going to make up for it by doing something after everyone else has stopped giving.
lame thing about xmas for me now is
if i really want something i’ll just buy it myself rather than expect someone to buy it for me for xmas. doing things for others is one of the only things i enjoy doing for xmas now.

Stan Van Gundy agrees
After being fined for his comments last year, this year he had this to say:
I have no comments at all on Christmas Day games. My suggestion to my staff this morning was that I think the NBA is so important to Christmas that what we really need to do is increase from five games to 10, and we need to start them at midnight on what would have been Christmas Eve and play them all through the day so there’s not a minute of Christmas Day where there’s not an NBA game on TV. Because, it’s great. The NBA is Christmas, to me, anyway. It’s what it’s all about.

SO, I have been up since 5:45 AM
opened present all morning, err, i mean watched my son open presents .. he had a blast and mommy got a few presents too! My siblings all spent the night, we had dinner here last night, stayed up until around 2 am wrapping presents, drinking home made egg nog and playing the wii. I would like the record to reflect that i won 6, counte em, 6 consecutive bowling contests and I beat them all at MarioKart … twice! I’m a boss … no , i’m better, I’m SO wesley.
My mother’s husband had a complete bile duct blockage from a huge gall bladder stone.. smh. He had surgery to remove the gall bladder this morning on emergency status. My mom says he’s resting comfortably. The mass in his chest they detected we wont know anything about for a while, tests wont come back for a few days.
So , instead of family dinner with my mom today, as we originally planned, i’m going to take a nap and then head to my aunt’s house. I painted my nails purple, and then quickly realized that with my yellow toe nail polish w/ gold sparkles on top, i looked like some nutsoe laker fan.girl. I quickly repainted my nails red. And covered up my feet. I’m blazer fan decked out, yearrrr .
Okay , merry christmas, happy holidays, etc… to all . :)

Made marbled pumpkin cheesecake.
Looks mostly good except that it cracked some. The little cupcake versions I made and tasted were AMAZING. But I can’t figure out what would cause cracking (my hunch is my oven temperature wasn’t regulated quite right). I’m going to go have dinner now, but if anyone knows what cracks cheesecakes, I’d be curious to know. I’ll probably take some pictures of the outcome once it has finished setting and before we eat it late tonight.
Merry Holidays!
She'll be right.
Hmm . . .
I don’t know if this will help, but I’ve had good luck when I don’t overbeat the batter (make sure cream cheese is soft and everything is creamy before adding eggs). I’ve also heard that slow cooking (lower temps, for ex.) and slow cooling help.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
This definitely occurred to me. I felt like I way overbeat the batter.
I’ll give this a try on the next one. Between your thoughts and jstbeachy’s link, I’m feeling pretty sure this is the issue.
I got a picture, but I’ll have to post it later/in the next junk.
She'll be right.
I add a thin 2nd sour cream layer after the initial baking
It doesn’t affect whether it cracks, but it masks it, so it doesn’t matter.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I think your cheesecake um er...farted!
One cause is air trapped inside the batter – a result of over-mixing. Once in the oven, the air bubble expands and wants to escape from the cake. As it finds its way out of the top of the cake, it creates a crack or crevice in the cake’s surface.

You have the most popular cats in the hood!
And no offense, but I was afraid that might be a problem.
#52--------I believe in Greg Oden
I complain, but so far, it’s not a real problem. The gray cat on the left is shy and just likes to play with my cats. The black cat on the right is so high on the totem pole he doesn’t even have to fight, he just stops by for the pats.
The only problem cat is the orange one (not my orange Simon shown in this photo). I think I may have to start discouraging the stupid orange guy.
Well, that's not exactly what I meant but it's probably just as well not to go there.

I've always argued folks frequently have children for, well, selfish reasons.
A part of them wants to produce someone who’s in their image, y’know. Even a person or couple who adopts a child does so often to have someone young who they can attempt to mold after themselves.
I, however, am a selfless person — well, at least in this regard — who hasn’t produced any offspring in an overpopulated world and doesn’t want a spitting image of himself running around causing a ruckus.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I'm sure many people do
Your second paragraph tends towards the ridiculous, though. It is making too many assumptions and takes a rather single-minded, self-centered view of the whole point of having children
Not having children isn’t selfless – you can’t stand children so you don’t have them, which is fine.
Overpopulation is a problem born in the developing world that can only be cured by policies such as the Chinese one child policy being spread throughout those countries.
The final part is fair I suppose. Unless you are a reasonable parent who wants their children to be more than just their own personal mini-me’s.
Admittedly, I was dabbling in hyperbole.
To be honest, my not having children is just as selfish as people who want children having them.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
my suggestion works, but i realize it’s not a very good one

I think you have to include the last bit

I think it adds a lot of impact
I can see some people here using it that way too. You roll with it however you like.

Bad because of the game?
Mine was great. I didn’t get a Wesley one (I’m gonna buy one within the next couple of days), but my Santa present was a Roy jersey, a Blazer sweatshirt, and tickets.
"Roybot can do whatever she wishes on this site. She’s on the V.I.P. lounge list." -Dave
Nah, it was going downhill before the game. I was hoping a win would make it better, but it got worse even before the outcome was decided.
You should get me one too; I didn’t get a Matthews jersey either.
:-(
Sorry your night has been bad :-(
What color should I get? The Roy one is black so I don’t think I should get another of the same color.

I really like the red ones
Even though black is my favorite.
The nice thing about red, they look best in the stands. Black and white, while team colors, don’t scream “team color” the way red does.

by dan_the_man on Dec 25, 2010 11:40 PM PST up reply actions
I've said it before, but the black ones are my favorite for anyone to wear.
The other colors just look odd to me when it’s not the team wearing them.
The problem I have with the replica ones (which I think is the only kind Wesley ones are available in) is they always look so shiny.
"Roybot can do whatever she wishes on this site. She’s on the V.I.P. lounge list." -Dave
Somewhat related to the Blazers, but that's not the major subject
I had dinner at my brother’s house. We were watching ball and talking about the Blazers.
Him: Wesley should definitely be in the rookie/soph game.
Me: Fo sho. He’s playing much better than any other soph wing.
Him: Yeah, I was reading on Blazersedge how his PER is way higher than any other soph SG or SF.
Me: Are you just saying that because I’m the one who wrote it?
Him: What?
Me: I’m the one who wrote that. You are relaying information to me that I wrote.
Him: Oh, ok. So?

My mother made the most disgusting eggs I think have ever been made ever for brunch this morning.
They were called “Goldenrod Eggs”, and the name was bad enough, but paled in comparison to the actual preparation. Hardboiled eggs, separated, the whites put into a cream sauce and the hard cooked yolks powdered and sprinkled over the top of the floppy cream sauce. It almost put me off eggs entirely, and I really need to stop thinking about it but I can’t. I tried a bite and it was gnar-gnar.

Over medium fried eggs are awesome, especially when scooping up the yolk with a spoon, putting ...
it in on your tongue, and popping the thin egg white to release all the flavorful yolk in your mouth at once.

Yeah, it's definitely unique.
At first, I cut around the egg white with a fork and eat it normally — with a bit of Tabasco sauce on it — yet, how I finish off the yolk is an odd way of consuming it.

I got a really nice surprise today for Xmas. When I went to India 6 years ago I took an old camera with me and spent some time doing some night photography for the first time.
I took some pics the first week I was there and not trusting anyone to develop them over there I had to wait a month and a half to see if any of them turned out. When I finally got them, I was really stoked as they turned out as good as could be expected with me never having done it, and not finding any good info on how to do it. I just guessed. Anyways I went looking for the photo’s this year and couldn’t find them anywhere. I was absolutely devastated, which as it turns out was unnecessary. Turns out I gave them to my mom and she had them framed, sorry bout the crappy quality, but I was pretty happy about this.

I got a new camera (I wanted/needed one since I love taking photos and only had my crappy cell phone camera), a scanner, a soda-making machine that adds carbonation (I remember mentioning in here I wanted one, but I didn’t mention it to my family I think… they don’t read in here, they just know I drink too much diet soda and they got a machine for themselves as well. It works nice! Just wish it made bigger quantities, because I drink a TON of fluids), and my sister made the R2-D2 hat even though I told her not to!

My preggo sister made some homemade honey butter that was really good. I’ve never had homemade butter before, I don’t think.

hmm, after yesterday’s junk food, I’m really really craving potato chips and onion dip. Should I brave the Sunday grocery store crowds just to buy more unhealthy food? Hmmm.
Go for it
Now you have me craving chips and a blue cheese dip that I had on XMas Eve. Was the onion dip vegan? How do you do that? Tofu versions of dairy?
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
Tofutti makes a pretty good fake sour cream. By the time you add the onion soup mix, you can’t really tell the difference.
While you're at it will you pick up some grape leaves for me? I want to make dolmas.

I need to grow grapes sometime. I don’t like most Oregon grapes for eating, but jam and juice might be fun.
I have a love/hate relationship with my vines
The grapes taste pretty good (most years), but yowza, do those vines grow. It takes a ton of pruning to keep them from taking over the yard. On the other hand, they block out the house next door and shade the south and western windows in the summer.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
Because this JD needs more cats
Neighbor’s cat, neighbor’s house, my grapes reaching down to strangle neighbor’s roses.

Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
that’s one handsome cat! I guess he’s staked out the birdbath.
Nice grapes.
Plus corn! I don’t think I ever asked how your corn turned out this year.
I loved having a corn crop in the back yard
It’s a beautiful plant to watch grow. But I’m no corn farmer. For eating, I’m sticking with the market. The various critters liked it though.

Well, I finally figured out that the Otter Box is more than just the carrying case
but a skin that basically encases the phone and I can’t get it off. I watched a bunch of videos on how to get the thing off and broke a couple of fingernails to no avail. I’m taking it to the Verizon store tomorrow and let them deal with it. My son got the OB at a Verizon store in OR. and they put the thing on the phone when he picked it up so there should be no problem with them taking it off. I’m still hoping that removing/replacing the battery will correct the problem with it. Thanks for all your efforts.

From the Kings point of view, could he really get trough to Cousins?
by southern oregon on Dec 26, 2010 10:28 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, that's tough.
There probably aren’t a lot of coaches who could. At least Walton would be as tall as Cousins, that might help a little in some strange way.
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 26, 2010 10:31 PM PST up reply actions
it might, instead of physically looking down at a coach (which might have some psychological impacts) he would be forced to look eye to eye with his coach
I am 6’1", so I am used to being a couple of inches taller than most people I come into contact with. When I talk with someone who is like 6’5", I notice a difference in how I react to speaking with someone who is much bigger than I am. Perhaps Cousins feels the same way.
If that's the goal, then maybe Bill Russell should get another shot at coaching the Kings.

He's not worthy of a coaching discussion, plain and simple
I don’t care if you’re talking about the Kings or another team. Just because he can relate to some of the junk players go through doesn’t mean he’d be a good coach. He’s a better entertainer than manager.

OK, I admit my comment was along the lines of him being a head coach

I got my dad Band of Brothers on BluRay for Christmas.

It's really different. Wayyyy darker and more violent. More despair. Band of Brothers told the story of a group of men better, but I feel like the Pacific told the story of war better.
Also, about half of the pacific is based on “With the Old Breed at Pelielu and Okinawa” by Eugene Sledge which was the best war book I’ve ever read.

Also, if people are expecting something with a hamburgery texture, they’re often OK with bulgar thrown in.

I’d have an issue if they are looking to curb that sort of stuff in general but to censor PG? Unacceptable.
Alright folks
I have to get my beauty sleep, so I can look fabulous for everyone.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
This may be too Blazer related but anyway
I was thinking tonight, if ever someone wanted to argue we should’ve taken the other viable option in 2007 then now would be the time. In dire need of a big time scorer yet those posts have dried up.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful that subject isn’t coming up every two minutes but it seems like strange timing.
the people who were bringing it up are entirely convinced now and see no need to argue a point they think is settled
#52
Fair point
Given our current position, now is the first time I would get the argument that we should’ve taken him regardless of hindsight – if we knew Roy likely had an expiry date then scoring was always gonna be an issue.
anyone who foresaw Greg only playing 82 games in 4 season
AND Roy falling apart this early in his career can change their name to Nostradamus
#52
Yeah the Greg thing is unforeseeable
Sounds like Brandon’s knees were pretty messed up by draft time though. All I’m saying is that if we knew Brandon likely couldn’t be a high usage, one-on-one guy for the long-term then Durant would make more sense as a pick.
I don’t agree with the argument, but I can understand it from this angle.
can you even imagine Roy trying to play with Durant
with all this talk about how he can’t play with Miller. At least Miller can pass the ball.
#52
Durant is effective without the ball though, which is the key difference
Moreso than when he has the ball in isolation or pick and roll sets IMO. Defensively, they would suck and as I value defense, I still love the Oden pick but the offensive incompatibility of Roy and Durant isn’t so evident to me.
yes, Durant is good off ball
but, clearly, not strictly an off ball player. He would command lots of touches and Roy wants the ball a ton.
#52
Westbrook handles the ball a ton
Realise Roy isn’t a PG but those two with a Hinrich type at the 1 would work I think.
yes, but you don't hear Westbrook complaining about deferring touches unlike Roy (even if it's overblown by the media)
#52
Maybe that's cos Westbrook doesn't have to
I’m entirely on Roy’s side when it comes to this whole Dre fandango
a Battier type backup on the wing
and a low usage defensive/rebounding center to go with Hinrich guy, Roy, Durant and Aldridge
#52
IT'S THE FLOATING HAND.

Who thought that a paper about “hacking” the debit card system used in most EU countries was a legitimate project, and sees his student in the tradition of Erasmus, Darwin and Newton publishing works the establishment doesn’t like just because it would be more convenient to not change.
I agree with Dean Anderson's position 100%
In addition to everything he said, it’s important to keep in mind that the greatest security advancements in this field come from people with hacker mindsets. Maybe the banking industries’ moneymakers need to consider reinvesting in their system.

Weird, I replied "test" to a comment that Timmay was going to delete to see if he had already.
He did and the “test” just went up as a new comment instead. But then when I refreshed it was gone… So did that not actually show up for anybody? Actually someone would have had to have been here right when I commented I guess.
O yeah, i've been changing that things non stop

by hoodieNation on Dec 27, 2010 11:06 AM PST up reply actions
Yeah the way it works is this:
- We (mods) delete a comment.
- The comment does not disappear for anyone currently looking at the page.
- The “actions” section of that comment will then be problematic. You normally can’t rec, flag etc.
- You can still reply. But the reply will go to the bottom (I’ll call it “orphaned” for this). It’s visible to anyone still sitting and reading that page.
- People can reply to the orphaned comment and it’ll look just like normal from there.
- As soon as you hit refresh, or leave then return to the page, it’s all gone.
(In answer to the inevitable question: Yep, you can still get warned for breaking the rules in an orphaned comment thread)
This happens all the time in GDT’s, so we get to explain it regularly. It’s basically a quirk in SBN’s coding.

i am filled with disappointment.
there is a very good chance i won’t be able to make the meet up tonight. i came down with something that the doctor said tested negative for strep, but is at least tonsillitis or something. so i have to take antibiotics. i left work and am not sure just how contagious i am but i don’t think it’s too awfully contagious but I’m not feeling too super right now. but i’ll rest up and maybe by the time for the meet up is here i’ll feel better, but i’m not holding my breath because if i did that i would die from lack of oxygen.
so i am very sorry to miss you guys tonight, it is sure to be a grand time. plus i miss my chance to meet Jake and Mortimer, which is my greatest disappointment :(

It's done all the time with live recordings on instruments. In my old punk/metal band our singer used to scream into two mikes and it would just get a little louder.
If it were separate PA’s or amps used to amplify the different mic’s, there might be a millisecond difference in how fast the signal was output, making is sound really terrible annoying and awful, especially if one rig was of much higher quality.
Always intense.
by dario argento on Dec 27, 2010 2:04 PM PST up reply actions
But more often than not two mics on the same instrument / singer would be processed by the same PA / line-in, making a millisecond delay unlikely.
Also, the guy running the soundboard can usually fix those tiny little delays very quickly and the good ones can do it on the fly.
Always intense.

JD word of the day: contraction

3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion
“That’s crazy, because I had no idea what the word ‘contraction’ meant before I saw it on the Internet,” James said after the Miami Heat’s practice Monday.
I can’t believe that’s not an article on The Onion.
hahaha
yeah, he didn’t mean it at all
“Imagine if you could take Kevin Love off Minnesota and add him to another team and you shrink the [league],” James said Thursday.
3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion
i don’t know why he doesn’t stand by his comments…i agree with him. contraction would be good for the league.
3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion
I'm not convinced that contraction would bring as much as is hoped
But at the same time, yeah LeBron, you knew what you meant. What a maroon.
David Stern would love that.
On the other hand, the players would go nuts. I’m not sure the Players Association would ever buy off on it. The travel is already nuts, so let’s make it worse.
Now if Stern wanted to make a new overseas division (and have them not play, like the old AL and NL before interleague), and have a championship series of US champ vs overseas champ, now we’re talking.
i don’t think traveling from Spain/France/England to the east coast is that bad. Besides, the way they are pampered, they have no room to complain.
3-4 game road trips at a time…doesn’t seem too bad.
it would definitely be a great global sport
3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion
They'd also be coming out West, correct? And vice versa?
I suspect the players would totally revolt. Just a feeling though. “Ok, Lakers this is only a 3 game road trip, but you’re going to the other side of the Earth and back.”
David Stern would love to make it happen though. I could see him simply trying to move 4 franchises overseas instead of contracting.
I cant see the Euro team owners letting Stern call the shots or otherwise cooperating

I think the current Euro owners would definitely be upset
I’m not sure how that would shake out. Stern would definitely need to smooth out the feathers he’d ruffle if he expanded to Europe.
Stern does not smooth feathers,he dictates commands

I was thinking the same thing as I typed that.
Oh boy, the current Euro teams would go insane if the NBA encroached without working out a deal. They’re on good terms right now.
Plus the small matter of NBA suitable venues that they are not going to donate
by southern oregon on Dec 27, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions
I bet Stern could work out a lot of the details
For as much as he wants it to happen, he’d be willing to work hard for it. But like most things Stern does, it would leave some unhappy folks in his wake.
Details like getting Euro tax payers to build arenas and donate them to an NBA team?
Good luck with that

I don't think he'd expect the municipalities to pay in Europe to start
In fact, I bet he’d accept using lesser facilities for a while. Though I don’t know the European stadiums and how “lesser” is defined, so I can’t comment further.
I can see Stern thinking that the Blazers playing a home and away back to back
with the 2nd game in Moscow would be a great idea

I think I've mentioned it before
But if I’m Nike, I’d pick 20 of my best employees in their 20s, and put them all in a room with LeBron. He gets to pick one, and that guy becomes part of his entourage. That guy is always there, not just to help keep Lebron in check, but to help shoot down stupid ideas that come from his stupid friends.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
That's a funny, and very good, idea.
Though the hard part is keeping the guy from turning into a yes man. Perhaps rotate in a new person yearly.
Yep, that would be the challenge
But hopefully Nike is able to pick guys who they know to have a backbone. Of course, the other challenges would be Lebron agreeing to it in the first place, and then Lebron and the crew actually listening to the guy.
If it worked, though, it’s probably only a 250k or so per year solution, and it could save them tons of headaches.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
For shooting down dumb ideas from his dumb friends I would reccomend

he shouldn’t have retracted his statements. he’s gotta stop doing that. besides, contraction is a good idea
However, is not the peculiar difficulty of every synthesis that its end is already implicit in its beginnings.

Looks good to me.
The video card will play most older games, and probably newer games at lower settings. It’s not a high end gaming card, but I suspect you understand that.
It’s probably a pretty good laptop.
i have ~1200 dollars (only at best buy) to spend on a new laptop, but i’d like to not spend all of it… 800 would be ideal, but i want to play newer games at moderate settings, if possible

how convinced are you that you need 17.3"s of screen?

it’s not an issue at all — i will take it to class for notes and such, but i plan on buying a good size LCD monitor

then you should be ably to get a 15" laptop with a good video card for what you’re looking at spending

I'd lean in a similar direction.
A 12-15" laptop is better for lugging around and using on a desk in a classroom.
People mainly want the 17" models for the screen space. If you have an external monitor attached to it, a smaller screen is fine.
yeah, that works. actually, i have $530 to spend at best buy, and $750 to spend anywhere else. the 530 is store credit for my old laptop breaking. so if there’s a great deal on a gaming laptop anywhere else, i can buy it and use my best buy money on a tv/monitor or an xbox or something

That video card is iffy for that purpose.
It’s just a revamp of the AMD 5470, which is a low-to-midrange card. It’ll be most useful on older games.
Link to card details, which has a link to the 5470 in the description
