12/20: Do they know it's JD time at all?
It's Junk Drawer time, there's no need to be afraid
In Junk Drawer time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of Blazers, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world, it's Junk Drawer time.
So, 'tis the season to hear the same songs over and over (and over. and over.) on certain radio stations. For some people, this is great! For others, it's a sign they're ready to go into hibernation until New Year's.
So, let's talk about it. Any songs of the season that you really love, and never get bored of? Is there a certain version of that song that you recommend for other JD'ers?
Does this music drive you nuts? If so, tell us the worst offenders. Which songs get into your head and drive you absolutely insane because you heard it on the speakers at the mall? If you could put one song's master tape into the bonfire, never to hear it again, which one would it be?
For the new folks:
Welcome to the Junk Drawer! This is the off-topic location at BE. Some general rules apply:
- You remember everything Dave wrote yesterday? It applies here too.
- That includes discussing other posts, users or comments here. Yep, we're officially deleting all that stuff in the JD again.
- Be nice to each other; most folks have to see family soon, they have it hard enough already.
- If you and someone else in the JD annoy each other, just let it go. Sheesh!
- If you have a problem, blame Cab. He's secretly Dave anyway.
- Not everyone likes Flash Mobs.
- If you want to keep Corvid out of your JD, just pretend it's about Christmas music.
- "The Ref" is superior to "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation".

I have been thinking aobut the Orlando moves and I am confused.
I know Lewis was way over payed but isn’t he the perfect 4 to play alongside Dwight Howard. What is the plan now? To play Bass at the 4? Seems to me that would clog the lane. Play Turk at the 4? I guess that works but then you’ll have Richardson at the 3 and Arenas and Nelson at the 2 and 1. I like the deal with PHX but I don’t really get the Lewis for Arenas move from the Magic perspective.
witty statement here
the floor spacing is interesting—everyone shoots the 3 ball. The thought is probably lets open up our offense as much as we can. Anyone of those 4 can put up 20 points a night I’d think. I don’t know about turk though…. maybe he’ll go back to handling the ball more often…
Give a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
by EvilKaramazov on Dec 20, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions
I guess we will see.
I know Lewis has been playing like garbage but you at least have to come out and put a hand in his face. I guess Bass can hit a mid-range jumper. Also Anderson probably sees more time in this deal. The worst part of it now is there are two Richardsons on a team.
witty statement here
Orlando is gonna be awesome!!!
Agent Zero will surprise many…(considering he’s been terrible, only way is to go up if you play alongside D12)
3-Time BEdge Pop-A-Shot Champion
do you think the plays more time at the 1 or 2?
or splits it evenly?
witty statement here
Depends on how well he works out with Nelson
If they want to surround Howard with shooters, Arenas, Hedo and J-Rich will see quite a lot of time.
hasn't that always been Orlando's
strategy… I can’t envision it changing any time soon. I think the D12, Hedo, J-Rich, Agent 1, Nelson line-up could be solid… depending on the match-up. Wouldn’t want to do it verse a team with a power-wing but it could work well.
witty statement here
Eliminates the temptation
Van Gundy no longer tempted to start Lewis at PF….
by Storyteller on Dec 20, 2010 11:49 AM PST up reply actions
They’ll probably go with Nelson-Gil-JRich-Hedo-Dwight more often than you think.
However, Bass isn’t the bruiser he has the rep of being— he’s a good midrange shooter and very overrated as a rebounder/banger.
The only 2 PFs hitting more 16-23 footers than Bass at a higher % this year are Dirk and Scola. Bass is making 1.7 per game from there at a 52% clip. That’ll probably come down, but he can shoot.
The reason I hate the deals for Orlando is that they are stuck with Gil and Hedo for a while now, and those guys suck. They might get a little better this year (but I dunno) but its not going to be nearly enough.
ABsolutely
They are still a trade away from true title contention (ie. The LA, Boston, Miami, San Antonio tier)
If I could erase all memory of "The Little Drummer Boy" from people's heads I would.

“And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime

Wow, that Africa sure is a big country!
And then, how offensive is this line “Tonight thank God it’s them, instead of you.”

I'm not sure what they were thinking when they wrote that song.
I’m nearly sure the entire song was meant as sarcasm, especially the aforementioned offensive line. That they’re doing the equivalent of a sarcastic Dad talking to their whining kid about their problems.
I always hated that line
and the whole, “Do they know it’s christmas time at all?”
Maybe they’re not all Christians bono….
Maybe they hadn’t yet discovered commercialism…
Clearly not written to appeal to the people who live in Africa though.

I don’t have anybody that comes over and plays it anymore and I’m terrible at drums, but without it I no longer have a complete studio. What should I do? It’s a nice kit, and I could probably get $1600 bucks for it with cymbals and hardware, but dang it’s hard to let go of. Right now I could probably use the money more than the kit which has not been struck for six months or more….

Christmas songs
Songs I like if I’m in the right mood even during the season (can get too much):
Stille Nacht/Silent Night. It’s just a well composed song, and gives you a special feeling at midnight in a church)
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – Dean Martin version
Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea. Well, when I’m driving home for Christmas. Duh.
Can quickly get annoying:
Oh Christmas Tree
Feliz Navidad
Jingle Bells
Similar songs of that calibre
(I am dreaming of a) White Christmas
Just shoot me after hearing it the third time in a store or on TV (reliably peaks in the charts every year)
Last Christmas – Wham!
Santa Baby
for reasons I cannot explain, I love Last Christmas and look forward to it every year. I think I’m rare in that regard. HOWEVER, Taylor Swift is singing it this year. It doesn’t suit her voice at all, and is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I can confirm that you are rare in that regard
However …I think that it is Ashley Tisdale who I have been hearing sing that song …rather than Taylor Swift

Watched an old Christmas movie for the first time last week
Holiday Affair, starring Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum
Janet plays a woman close to 30 years old although she was only 22 at the time
Not a classic, but entertaining. 3 stars out of 5…..

Yeah, really sad.
Willie’s from Detroit so it was sort of a homecoming game for him. It was a single car accident and it’s unclear what went wrong.
For years
when I heard the Twelve Days of Christmas sung, I had the urge to exclaim, “BaDumDumDum” in between the “Five Golden Rings” and the “Four Calling Birds”. Then 3 years ago, I discovered why – it’s how the Muppets sang the song with John Denver. Ah, childhood – even when the memories are only subliminal, they still make life fun!
The true version of 12 days of Christmas
is sung by Bob and Doug McKenzie.
For some reason I always laugh at the line “That beer’s empty”.

BSU-Utah hate...
A spat of pushing and shoving broke out between the Boise State and Utah football teams during Sunday’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas welcome reception — the first of several events involving both teams.
"Some pushing and shoving, some dishes broken," said Mark Wallington, the media director for the MAACO Bowl.
Utah moved to a lower level of the Hard Rock Café after the incident.
The incident started outside the massage room, where the bowl had provided professional massages for the players, toward the end of the reception.
"They were just mingling and they got into a little shouting match," Wallington said.
The skirmish was broken up by the bowl staff.
The teams are scheduled to attend most bowl events together — including a Mystere show Sunday night after dinner and a dinner Monday night at the Fremont Street Experience. However, the teams are separated more at those events than the welcome reception.
"(The welcome reception) is the one where they’re the most together," Wallington said. "… We never had a problem before."

yeah, Harbaugh signed a new deal. I suspect they think they are title contenders next year and want one more shot at it, especially with the Oregon game at home. Then they’ll both leave together after next year.
Carolina is pretty locked into the top pick at this point and doesn’t really need another young QB since they seem committed to Clausen. Maybe Luck doesn’t want to end up in Buffalo or Arizona… or doesn’t want to give up the guaranteed money a #1 pick gets over a #2

An armed robbery suspect was arrested after the clerk at the south suburban liquor store he held up recognized him as a frequent customer — despite the mask he wore — authorities said today.
As he was held at gunpoint, the clerk began talking with the robber, even calling him by his nickname “Li’l Mike” because he thought it was a joke, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

chain, bearings, some housing, he recommended tires but I said I gotta wait on that. I guess 60 of it is only “possible” charges that they will only use if they need to, so it could be 164, which’ll be much easier to handle

yeah, after this huge overhaul I’ll probably look into it. I didn’t expect it to be nearly that expensive but figured I really need it to get done cause my brakes aren’t very strong(oh yeah, I’m also buying brake pads ’cause mine are totally shot), I can hear that my tires are kind of loose and etc etc
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
Bike maintenance is fun and super easy
I don’t know how mechanically inclined you are, but it doesn’t take too many tools. And once you learn how simple everything is, it makes it easier and much less stressful when something goes wrong when you’re out on a ride.

yeah, for sure. having to basically rebuild my toyota from the bottom up made me quite a bit more mechanically inclined than I would have ever imagined myself being, but I had tons of help from my super smart mechanic uncle with that. I would just need the right instructions (which I have a few good sites of info bookmarked) and the patience.

I just didn’t expect a busy season like this.
yeah, I went to target at around 11 o clock at night last Wednesday and it was still crazy busy even then. I went to Fred Meyer’s earlier today to get some little last minute things and it was nuts. My mom and I had to park really far away and the only reason we got that spot was ’cause someone left just as we pulled up to where they were. the lady in front of me in the checkout stand spent 650 dollars, mostly on gift cards (since Fred Meyer has one of those little gift card stations where you can get a card for almost any store you can think of).

Man is deep sea fishing off the Oregon coast
When his boat develops a bad leak and sinks. He starts to swim and prays, “Lord, I know you wouldn’t want a good man like me to die. Please save me.” An hour passes and another fishing boat passes by. A man on the boat tries to throw him a line but the swimming man refuses to take it, saying, “I know that God will save me.” Another hour passes when a helicopter flies overhead. Again, the swimming man refuses a line thrown to him from the helicopter, saying, “I know that God will save me.” Another hour passes and a Coast Guard Cutter comes close enough to notice him. But again, the swimming man refuses to take the rope that is thrown his way, saying, “I know that God will save me.” Shortly thereafter, the man tires of swimming and drowns.
Upon reaching Heaven, the man asks God why his prayer wasn’t answered. God replies, “What did you want? I sent you a fishing boat, a helicopter and the Coast Guard!”

"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Wiz one is okay (certainly an improvement over their terrible current logo)
Don’t like the Bulls change.
I like the classical clarendon on the original Bulls type
The new type seems contemporary but not as timeless. More generically “sports team.” The bull looks more aggressive, but also more cartoon-y. The lines are crisper on the original, seems more universal, less stylized (which is a good thing, imo)
Interesting
For me, there’s no comparison. The new one is far more striking. The font goes from being boring to interacting with the logo and popping out. Just overall I think it is a massive improvement.
What do you think so far?
The Magic certainly look like a bunch of guys who haven’t played together.
Yeah, no rhythm on offense.
They don’t seem to know what to do other than pass it around and dump it down to Howard. When Howard isn’t hitting well, they don’t know what else to do.
I read somewhere the Orlando Magic are looking into reacquiring Tony Battie.
As it is, I could see a Malik Allen and 2011 second-round draft pick for Battie trade.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I don't know if Battie is enough
I don’t see Bass as a starting calibre PF, especially not when he’d have to go up against Bosh and Garnett.
Horrible mismatches.
Dallas will win tonight.

Nah, I think it’s more mental than anything. He’s convinced he can’t play with Miller so that is what happening. Fact is, they’re a bad on-court pairing, but even that doesn’t explain the dropoff from Roy.

Here are a few albums over at Amazon MP3 that you may or may not know about, that are all currently discounted:
The 99 Most Essential Christmas Masterpieces: It’s only $1.99, and if you like classical or choir, this might be for you.
I Wish You A Merry Christmas (Remastered), by Bing Crosby. Just a solid album of standards. He even included “The Little Drummer Boy” for Ann.
A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector. Once upon a time, Phil Spector wasn’t known for being on trial. In 1963, he brought in many of the most well known female soul singers to sing Christmas music. This is a quiet classic. Rolling Stone rated it the 143rd greatest album of all time. Despite that, it’s actually good.

For smaller musical artists, their sales are slipping since the MP3 era began
But their concert attendance is skyrocketing, because free music is basically a huge accidental promotional tool.
Old news
This is the modern music industry. You make hardly any money off of music sales. You make your money through licensing to advertisements and other events, and mainly concerts. It’s not bad, it just means the death of the big bad music labels, which I’m really quite ok with.

Current guess: January for Verizon (iPhone 4 though, LTE status unknown)
iPhone 5 (probably for both AT&T and Verizon) should be announced in late June, released in mid-July, give or take.
The big unknown is when they'll add LTE to the iphone, which will work with both Verizon and AT&T
Some rumors that it’ll release for Verizon in Jan, others that it’ll release with the iPhone 5, and still others say it’s over a year away.

Pretty sure it stands for Long Term Evolution. Let me check.
Yep it is. It’s the next-generation data network that they like to refer to as 4G, even though technically it’s not.
It should be fast enough that you could arguably use an LTE connection for not just your cell phone, but also your home network.

I didn't get all the hating on him this summer
He has played for some pretty poor coaches and teams for most of his career, of course his game is going to have rough patches and be heavily 1 on 1. Amazing what an elite coach and system can do with talent
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
He's still offensively inefficient and defensively outmatched.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
He's one of the worst in the league according to net points allowed per 100 possessions.
http://www.82games.com/1011/10UTA11.HTM#onoff
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
which was only the start of my comment
He’s bigger and Boozer was a liability on D as well, so I’d say he represents an upgrade for Utah on that front
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
As usually happens when good players go from losing teams to winning teams
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Efficiencies go down?
I can understand usage going down, but his assist% is down as is his TS%. And both were mediocre to begin with.
Not a statistical argument
There were people saying he would fit badly and Utah would not do well. Hasn’t turned out that way. He is doing OK playing within that system.
He wasn't gonna turn into a pumpkin.
But he hasn’t exactly flourished either. I’d attribute the Jazz’s success more to Millsap playing really well in increased minutes and Deron having one of his best ever seasons.
The point is people were saying Utah may turn into a pumpkin
Al has been pretty good considering the adjustments and he’s likely to get better, not worse. He could easily be matching Boozers production by the end of the season
Don't think he'll ever be nearly the passer Boozer is.
and I don’t see any indication that he’s learning how to score more efficiently. He seems to be the same player he’s always been.
Boozers passing will always be better than Al's
Al will always be a better shot-blocker.
Balances out.
I agree on the passing
But super tremendously disagree with the last statement. Jefferson’s only 25!!! Way way more than enough time to reinvent himself mentally
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Right, Paul Millsap is the main reason for Utah sustaining its success.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I had said all along that there would be falloff from Boozer to Al.
Which there has been. It’s the role players that surprised me.
I think you underrate big Al. You don’t think the attention he commands has helped the role players flourish?
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Should clarify:
It’s CJ Miles who’s impressed me, and no I don’t think that’s had much to do with the attentions paid to Al. I’ve said all along that what’ll hurt the Jazz most of all is a system-wide downgrade. Al < Boozer. Bell < Matthews. Fysenko < Okur (when I thought Okur would be out till mid-January). That’s a downgrade at three spots and I thought it’d drop the Jazz to a 6-8 seed. That obviously hasn’t happened, but, like I said, I attribute that more to Millsap playing really well (jumping his PER by 5 over last year in increased minutes) + solid bench play from Price, which came out of nowhere.
Ronnie Price didn’t magically turn into a productive rotation player over the summer. Give Big Al at least a little bit of credit
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
I think you’re badly ignoring causality. Suddenly all these “terrible” role players are overpeforming? And Jefferson is terrible despite that? I can’t disagree more
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
And I never said Al Jeff was terrible.
Just that he’s the same player he’s always been…. a skilled but inefficient big man that’s not very good at passing and not very good at defense
But somehow makes all the role players on thew Jazz better, unless you think that’s just magucal coincedence
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
and Boozer was also a pretty crappy defender, so that wasn’t a big loss. I’d say the biggest casualty here is the idea that you need very particular skill-sets to be an NBA team.
i keep dancing on my own
not to be an nba team obviously
but to fit together and succeed in the league.
i keep dancing on my own
That is kind of a myth
I’m with you. I don’t understand how every Utah role player performing way beyond their career norms means Al Jefferson sucks. For that matter this makes negative sense to me
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
You don't think Al has anything to do with Millsap being effective
I dunno, might be time to agree to disagree.
I don’t understand how you can judge a player for gunning for stats but losing and then blame/not credit him when his stats are down but all his treammates are having career years and his team is winning.
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
.
I’ve never blamed Al Jeff for ‘gunning for stats.’ Like I said, I think he’s a skilled but flawed player. Two teammates are having career years. I don’t understand why he gets credit for that.
Elaboration: I don’t understand why he gets credit for that when he’s never made his teammates better before and his game hasn’t appreciably changed since moving teams.
In turn, I don’t understand what he has to do to gain approval. He puts up 20/10 and consistently draws low-post double teams for a losing team and is seen as a loser. He puts up less exciting stats for a winning team for whom he is the prize offseason acquisition and is seen as underproducing. What does he need to do to be seen as a good basketball player?
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
His defense has been fine this year
He rebounds well. His scoring will become more efficient, although perhaps never to your exacting standards.
I think you underrate him.
I have a hard time believing he's anything better than below-average defensively.
I’m not sure why his scoring will become efficient. He’s never been a super efficient scorer.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:26 PM PST up reply actions
He’s there to replace Boozer, so being a mediocre defender is a serious improvement
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
I don't think he's any better than Boozer.
probably worse IMO.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:30 PM PST up reply actions
I think it will become more efficient
Not saying he’ll turn into a super-efficient guy, but his usage is lower than in Minny so i’d expect him to get back to at least his career average (53TS%) or maybe a tad higher (around 55%). Boozer averaged around 57% in Utah, so I’m not expecting Al to equal that.
In terms of D, he is clearly better than Boozer, even by the eye test that is clear. He blocks shots and defensive metrics have him as OK (although maybe we shouldn’t go there ; )
In summary, I think Boozer was a better fit on offense but Al helps them on D. Al’s ability to be a low post threat also helps their perimeter guys, which I think is an underrated phenomenon.
Just because he starts and has a high usage rate for a good but not great team doesn’t make him a good player. That kind of argument is the stuff I hear from Thunder homers all the time re: Jeff Green. Derek Fisher started for multiple championship Lakers teams.
Not every player has to be a star on a well-built team
Also, Jefferson represents a clear swap for another player. My argument is that he has been just as good or better for the Jazz as Boozer, who was a more capable passer and jump shooter but a less capable defender and low post scorer. Jefferson is less injury prone and much larger. At the very least, swapping him for Boozer has been a wash. Based on the performance of the Jazz role players I would argue Jefferson has been better for the team than Boozer
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Oh, I think acquiring Al Jeff was by far the best move that the Jazz had after not paying Boozer. That’d have been a disastrous without Jefferson there.
Dunno.
I assume Okur’ll play off the bench till he’s totally healthy. Obviously gives them better depth.
Then he starts?
It will be interesting. Big sign that he is fitting in if Sloan sticks with him over Okur.
Expecting Al to come in and do what Boozer did last year was always unreasonable
The argument was that Al would hurt them though, make them less able to run their sets and that Al would struggle mightily not just being fed on the low block possession after possession. I’d argue pretty strongly that that hasn’t happened and also that his shooting numbers will trend upward as the season continues.
I also needs to be noted that Boozers passing came with a lot of turnovers – Boozer has twice the AST% but also twice the TOV% of Al. I think Al’s 3.9% BLK% vs Boozers 1.1% is significant as well.
I'll admit Utah is playing better than I expected.
But it’s not because of Jefferson. He’s playing about how I expected. I just thought they downgraded at three positions, but CJ Miles is playing way better than I expected which compensates for Raja Bell being who I thought he was.
Yeah, C.J. Miles has come on strong this season.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I disagree
I think the role players jumping in productivity is a direct result of the attention Jefferson commands on offense. It makes more sense than every Jazz perimeter player spontaneously getting better this year

If so, it will be harder. But otherwise, Dallas has a huge advantage in frontcourt depth. Plus, Kobe will be shooting more in the playoffs and the Lakers are at there worst this year when Kobe becomes a chucker

Tyson can deal with Bynum plus they have Haywood as a backup

I'm not convinced.
He was injured and/or awful for pretty much all of the second half of 08-09 and all or 09-10. He’s had a little under two months of health, and I have zero confidence in his ability to stay healthy. I’m still pretty okay with rescinding the trade, especially since who knows how Ibaka would have developed if Chandler was taking minutes.

Yo guys.
I get to be the heavy here. Fun!
Anyway, rule #2 at the top applies here. Postgame talk needs to mosey over to the recap thread. This is an official pass-down from Dave as part of last night’s “reminder of the rules” post. Youtube links, pictures and stuff can still be posted in the recap, and join in with the happy postgame crew (as some of you are already doing, so coolness).
Oh, and rule #8 applies all the time as well. Especially when Cab is around.
If you’re frustrated about this, you gotta main Dave privately. He’s the one who has made the final decision on this.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
You guys being out on the rest of the site also tends to help with flags
Which makes it a double-whammy of helpfulness.
Part of Dave's goal with yesterday's post was to improve the discourse on the site
Which means reducing the comments that don’t bring much to the site, and filtering out the interesting discussion (such as JD stuff) elsewhere again.
I do understand what you’re concerned about though. I personally think it’s reasonable to send Dave a note about this.
And for the rest of the week for example
There might not be a mainpage thread to talk about team stuff. NOt one directly on what we want to talk about anyways.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think non-game openthreads would be healthy to have. Ben’s full court press sort of served that purpose, but he doesn’t really do that anymore.

It triggered this round. We’re looking to do some clean-up. Reducing trolling, getting folks who don’t bring much to the party to adjust their mood, and getting good, intelligent folks to hang on the front page.
There are enough people on the mainpage disinterested in “useful” discussion to drive many junkers away. I know that I risk a warning everytime I venture to the mainpage because peoples’ attitudes rub off on me and I exhibit a personality that is very unlike how I act in the JD
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you

Our goal is to start adjusting that ratio. But we need folks to join in, or else it’s a vicious cycle.

Don't think of it so much as a rule.
The rest of the site is really struggling right now, while a segregation is forming between the site and the JD. That’s not good for the long-term health of Blazersedge, and the JD is part of Bedge. We can all pitch in and help everything run more smoothly.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:24 PM PST up reply actions
to piggyback on Timmay's point.
I really like the JD conversation, and I find it to be the best Blazers-related talk. But, if all of us are talking bball in here, then what happens to the rest of the site? The mission should be to have a good, healthy site; as much as the JD is fun, it’s a subset of the site, and it needs to be used properly.
If we talk elsewhere about it, then the conversation will pick up there as well. I’ve heard comments that the front page is annoying; well, maybe we can ramp it up by focusing our energy there. I’m just as guilty as the next guy for keeping everything here… but the place for Blazers talk is and always has been the rest of the site. This is for off-topic.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:22 PM PST up reply actions
and this is why we need fp open threads (which I'm emailing dave about)
the reason we’re able to have reasonable discussions in here isn’t because we’re inherently more reasonable posters. It’s because we hang out here and talk about news when there’s not much to say, which is to say when we’ve come to reasonable perspectives on things. Everyone’s knee jerk the moment something happens. If all the posts on the front page regard either recent developments or are GDTs, all the discussions in those threads are gonna be knee jerk too!

But most of the Blazers related discussion in here is either news or a discussion of the team. There are fanposts, fanshots, and stories that are related to these particular topics.
A lot of us are comfortable with each other. If we then go to a different area of the site, we can hopefully introduce the general level of respect given here.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:30 PM PST up reply actions
I think a daily Blazer-specific thread in fanposts or shots would give rise to a nice middle ground

Great idea.
Hey Amar'e! I've got an elbow for you!
by ripcitysarah on Dec 20, 2010 11:32 PM PST up reply actions
I'm definitely not opposed to a middle ground.
I’d say that it’s not forbidden to mention the PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS in the JD, but there are a lot of very long, drawn-out conversations in here that could easily have taken place in a story or fanpost. That’s what we’re trying to move. TAlk that already has a designated home, like post-game discussion.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:39 PM PST up reply actions
it's hard though
post-game discussion spans 3/4 threads already (the last gdt, the post game gdt, the recap, the media row report). That makes it difficult to engage others in a “drawn out discussion”, since the active life of the thread is a lot of times shorter than the time it takes for me to formulate my own thoughts!
i keep dancing on my own
what did Timmay do tonight?
He asked that the discussion immediately following the game move to the thread that opened immediately after the game.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:43 PM PST up reply actions
What he is talking about (I think)
is the fact that GDTs eventually get filed away and recaps are replaced by media row reports which then become ignored not long after the end of the game.
The JD allows you to post a topic, leave for a few hours, come back and pick up where you left off. Hard to get that elsewhere.
a lot of that is due to the JD, though.
A few years ago, in the formative JD stages, conversation on the FP had a lot longer of a shelf life.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:48 PM PST up reply actions
I half disagree. I don’t think the JD caused Dave and Ben to report news more frequently. I think that is more the shortening of the Ameriocan (global?) attention span. IMO, correlation doesn’t equal causation in this case
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
I don't think it's purely to the JD.
There are other factors involved.
I don’t think the site has grown at such a rapid pace in two years that it’s impossible to keep conversation going in a post for a day. Heck, JDs generally last about a day. A few years ago, I’d pop on to the recap thread to see the responses my comments garnered, much like I do now with the JD.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:53 PM PST up reply actions
sure
and I don’t really know how you manage this, but the fact of the matter is that most people writing in the four different “game discussion” threads I’m talking about are responding to different things. A few folks will disagree with Dave or Ben’s characterization of things, but mostly everyone’s just talking about what they saw on TV. So having so many posts (and comment sections) just atomizes the discussion.
i keep dancing on my own
I don't know that there's a perfect solution to this.
I have struggled at times with it, so I just end up with multiple tabs open, keeping track of multiple conversations. I’d email DAve about it and let him know that you think it’s too fragmented.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:58 PM PST up reply actions
I agree with this
As an example, I just posted this in the Game Recap. I put a few minutes of thought into it, and I would love for it to be part of a conversation. However, it is likely only a few people will see it because of how spread out things are. I’m not saying I should be posting it in the JD instead for that reason, nor am I presenting a solution.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
It was a really well thought out comment
I agree with what you’re saying. The only solution really is that when the argument comes up again (as it inevitably will) you quote that post as a response.
Instead of it being a conversation at the time, you end up rehashing your comments over and over in different venues.
Thanks
I might do that. I’ve written similar things several times over the last month or so. This one was probably more of a complete thought than most.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
That was a great comment
I was surprised I was the first person to rec it, a zillion hours later.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
Fair enough
I think atomic brings up a good point though. The GDTs have their place and are pretty well respected, IMO. The issue is more the commentary regarding day to day Blazer news. Either the discussion is a knee-jerk reaction to a specific article or it is nonexistent or exaggerated. The between games function of the mainpage and fanposts doesn’t accomplish the discussion leverls that would attract junkers to them
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Yeah it's the parallel conversations that don't work for me
And frankly, I’d love to spread some of the junk drawer collegiality and fun to other areas of the site.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
the main page recap is very fun tonight.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:45 PM PST up reply actions
Of course it is, we won big
What about the postgame threads on the 50% of games the Blazers lose? Quite frankly, I don’t think 1 bad game means we need to trade the whole roster but that seems to be the mood after most losses, regardless of who it’s to or the fashion it occured in
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
if you feel that way, and say it in the postgame thread, then the people who agree with you will be a lot more likely to speak up.
I don’t know that it will work, but I’m willing to bet that a little positivity would go a long way.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:50 PM PST up reply actions
It also makes it hard for people who have legitimate concerns
It becomes confrontational rather quickly. I’ve always tried to keep posting on the front page to some degree but this year it has reduced considerably.
I think it’s less tolerant out there. I flag if i think something is inappropriate but much of the time it is just a tidal wave of comments against you when you bring up something that doesn’t go with the flow. Makes it frustrating and leads me back here.
But that bad mood happens in the junk drawer too
After a loss, it’s not like the JD is happy place and the mainpage is cranky.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
The bad mood exists all over the site, to be sure
But the hyperbole seems to be less prevalent in the JD. Take for example tylercomp, who came to the JD to discuss potentially benching Roy. He had broached the subject on the main page and been so turned off by the response that he ended up in the junk drawer to discuss that particular topic. In my honest opinion, flagging can only do so much to prevent things like this from happening. I don’t like to flag people because I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it’s hard for me to differentiate between being opinionated and being mean when I know I broach that line on occasion
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Years of posting on Blazer boards has taught me two things
1) when the Blazers win, they are destined to win the championship this season with the current roster
2) when the Blazers lose, major trades need to happen immediately

If we didn't have both in 08/09 or last year
Then how can we now when things are far less optimistic/fun?
I think it is just a rough patch which is being reflected on the front page. People duck in here for some cover from the rain and a place they can discuss their concerns without judgement.
Even though I partake in both, Cab, I must say that you're wrong to ...
assume all folks will crossover from the JD to the main page.

It just suggests that some JD users can mingle on the main page posts when wanting to talk about Blazer-specific stuff and all can continue to talk off-topic here. Doesn’t exactly imply by itself that everyone would but that anyone could.
She'll be right.
That makes sense.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."

There have been complaints from other posters that the JD is too cliqueish.
If JDers go out in the rest of the site, it helps dispel that notion, and others may want to come and join the conversation.

I've seen some pre-deletion when I post in recaps/media row posts
It’s understandable that when there is a group of people who clearly have more connection than your average posters and show this when they use in jokes or have some fun in a front page post, those who don’t choose to use the site that way lump those people together and don’t always see them in a positive light.
You need to take the 90-9-1 rule into account, Cab.
The 1 percent is the JD. It is what it is, too, and that’s that.
Although this is certainly a fragmented part of the overall population at Blazersedge, trying ot consolidate everyone will only end poorly in one way or another.

People from the FP who have lurked the junk occasionally might be more prone to joining the JD community if they felt comfortable with junkers after seeing them in other areas of the site.

It can't be any harder than tracking stuff on twitter etc.
Which I presume is part of your job since you do social media. I mean, the fanposts have an RSS feed that’s easy to simply click through.
I wade through stuff all day.
This is my zone. I get to relax and use my z.

That the fanposts aren’t too hard to go through, and might actually be easier than the JD in some ways arguably. No insult intended at all.
(If you’re here long enough, you’ll start hitting z on all kinds of unrelated sites, trust me).
Twitter is way easier than wading through stuff on here, no offense
Everything is visible from the get go. I don’t think that parallel works.
RSS isn't the same.

Honestly.
This isn’t where I come for my news. (I know my view is skewed.)
I come here for the people. Plain and simple. Talking Blazers or randomness. It’s nice, in the midst on the off-topic, to discuss what brought us all here in the first place.
Hey Amar'e! I've got an elbow for you!
by ripcitysarah on Dec 21, 2010 12:33 AM PST up reply actions
Ahhh I thought you meant you came here to track fanposts instead
(Translation: In your original comment above, I thought you meant you were using the JD to find interesting links instead of wading through the fanposts, which is why I asked about the RSS feed. But if you mean you just come here to hang instead of looking for news, totally different thing).
That makes more sense. Though as you can imagine, it’s good to get the Blazer conversation back into the sections of the site intended for Blazer conversation. It’s not like we’ll be like “You can’t say Blazers!”, but there is a ton of insightful conversation here hidden from the rest of the site.
Nope. I have enough tracking of my own. Too much here to add to it.
Just the friends.

I'm amazed at that web site every time I visit. :)
Not that it’s her fault of course! It was there long before her.
I'd cut her some slack 'cause she's more successful than us.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Tis true
Working for the Blazer is probably a gig most of us can be envious of. In your case especially, it could be the first rung on the ladder to the GM’s chair.
To be fair, my real goal would be getting into sports radio.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I get front page through Twitter (via Ben)
I wouldn’t want an RSS of all fanposts/fanshots honestly.
Twitter is easier than the JD too. Go there for the info, come here for the conversation.
Yep Twitter is an understandable replacement for RSS
Though it requires you to trust short links, which is always iffy in its own way.
After the warning you gave us the other week I don’t click on goo.gl links even though I know most of them are legit
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
Twitter is useless to me because I don't trust shortened links.
Especially with the number of worms they’ve had.
Yeah there have been Twitter worms where they spread links to malware.
Some are through the site, some directly from user to user.
I’d be ok with that if I could just see the full link before clicking on it. There are extensions that help with that (by letting you see the destination address on hover).
I would use RSS if it gave me full articles. I tried one of those full RSS converters, but a lot of times that didn’t work either. I guess if I have to key through the news, I don’t want to have to click again.
i keep dancing on my own
*
part of it is that I don’t like the way blogs shove quality content down because it is six hours old. So the fact that RSS doesn’t give me full articles (and twitter gives you about six words) is a deal breaker.
i keep dancing on my own
Depends on the feed
I despise “after the jump” feeds. They’re useless for me.
For example, BE has the entire article in RSS, I only jump to the site for comments.
I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t really like the way that something really good is gone so quick on blogs in general. RSS and twitter just accentuate that. At least the NYtimes website will keep a brilliant expose on their FP for 12 hours.
i keep dancing on my own
Ahh then we're in full agreement on the bigger issue
This could simply be a side effect of the amazingly short attention span of most readers right now
yeah
I’m down with that. For now, I’m finished with meta-night and going to sleep.
night y’all!
i keep dancing on my own
except check the percentage of discussion that’s added to a post more than 3-4 hours after it’s up. I’d guess it’s less than 20% (and half that’s two4larue, which isn’t calling out another poster, it’s just a fact). In the JD, people were discussing the merits of Orlando’s trades in the middle of the night last night, which was 12 hours after it happened.
i keep dancing on my own
I don't have an issue with non-Blazers NBA stuff in here.
the JD has always been a way to kind of GDT the league as a whole, and that doesn’t need to change. But stuff that has a designated area, that’s what we’re trying to work on.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:41 PM PST up reply actions
yeah, but you know what I mean. That’s just an example of a discussion that lasted well past the shelf life of most news based fanshots on BE. We talk about stuff like what the Blazers should offer Oden off and on even when there is no particular currency in the news cycle. That would be the place of the daily open thread.
i keep dancing on my own
I think that's a good example of a fanpost topic.
if we put our 200 comments on the situation in a fanpost, it would attract a lot of attention from non-JD Bedgers.
I really like the open thread idea.
by Cablinasian on Dec 20, 2010 11:46 PM PST up reply actions
I think JDers should be more active in fanposts, so that's another thing
with all the time and thought we spend in here doing shorthand we could be doing a ton of fabulous longhand work (and I think the posts Norsk/JK/you have done on the sidebar back me up here).
i keep dancing on my own
oh, and I hereby call on Cabby to write an analytical fanpost before his last analytical post is a year old, thus contributing significantly to the level of dialogue to this site.

An open thread could also be a great breeding ground for fanposts/fanshots
Introduce an idea there, discuss it, get some suggestions to flesh it out and then go make a fanpost on it.
Could be really useful.
This is an open thread.
I really like the open thread idea.
That was the whole point when it was invented, no?
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 21, 2010 12:03 AM PST up reply actions
I think the intention was originally to keep Tom's off-topic talk away from the rest of the site.
It was becoming pretty distracting.
by Cablinasian on Dec 21, 2010 12:04 AM PST up reply actions
Yeah the original JD concept was because every thread became the JD
People would talk Blazers, get distracted, and suddenly there was two pages of OT conversation.
It's still an open thread.
Banning Blazer talk on a Blazer blog just seems really strange. It’s not going to make me comment on the FP more, it’s just going to make me leave altogether.

It's a good song
I can enjoy it today. However, back in 83, my reaction would have been:
Stop playing that song! Your radio station plays it ten times a day, which is nine times too many!

We can have JD opt out day
Might I suggest 12/24, no NBA games that day.

Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
What's wrong with wanting a different mascot?
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 21, 2010 1:23 AM PST up reply actions
mascots are made for kids, kids totally love blaze, I really don’t see the problem with him at all.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
He doesn't make sense!
I am opposed to all mascots though.
"Roybot can do whatever she wishes on this site. She’s on the V.I.P. lounge list." -Dave
cats can blaze trails too…. or something like that
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
i agree he doesn’t make sense in principle but he’s made for kids!! ninja turtles don’t make sense, spongehead squarepants doesn’t make sense
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
He doesn't represent anything about the Blazers, is my point.
Ninja Turtles and Spongebob aren’t meant as a mascot for a sports team.
"Roybot can do whatever she wishes on this site. She’s on the V.I.P. lounge list." -Dave
This is one of those cases where I say, why get worked up about it? Maybe he doesn’t make sense, but like GB says, he’s just there to entertain the kids.
I'm not worked up about it.
I can think something is pretty unimaginative and annoying without caring much.
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 21, 2010 1:43 AM PST up reply actions
Sorry, I didn’t mean you specifically, but somebody was worked up enough about it to write a fanpost. And I just violated rule number two.
Technically we shouldn't even be talking about Blaze in here.
All comments about the mascot must be kept in the appropriate fanpost.

Kids like a lot of things.
Justin Bieber would be the most popular kids mascot of all time, it doesn’t mean he should be running around at Blazer games.

We tend not to buy each other gifts, at least not in the traditional sense. For birthdays and holidays, we tell each other if there’s something we want, then we get it. I can’t think of anything we’ve gotten each other for an anniversary.

Could we expand it?
If there is someone else you are willing to part with. Could make it a two for two.
I just struggle parting with Manu straight up, simply because of the difference in 3pm, steals and points.

That's the only time I could. I guess I'm not long for the JD...
Just came in to say how nice LMA has played lately and got told this wasn’t the place. I’ll have to go take my comment to the soon to be deleted post game thread to be ignored. I wasn’t even trying to have a conversation about it, just trying to give him props…

My problem is I really don't have anything substantive to say about the blazers
Most of my comments are like my normal conversation, observations laced with sarcasm and meager attempts at wit, as I lack the analytical perspective of a stat junkie or fantasy player.
When I first came to Bedge I would try and engage in the other threads because I didn’t know the JD existed. Most of my comments were met with confusion or ignored because of my style. Then I found the JD and that all changed, because people got my jokes ( mostly) and people welcomed me instead of telling me to leave. I used to get called troll constantly when I started here.
Now it seems I have to jump back and forth from one page to another if my thoughts stray organically to the topic of basketball, even if I’m having a conversation about something else? Or what about how conversations that started out on basketball progress and morph into something else? You know, like how we all know about each others lives?
I know I should just email Dave and maybe I will later, but I’m terribly busy the next couple days and this did seem native to the conversation up above, but I just want to say this puts me in a spot where I feel like I’m going to be pushed out for the sake of community.
Too lacking in serious basketball knowledge but no less a fan, and too of a fan never to speak about basketball when I’m here…
Makes me sad. : (

lol wth. coz JD is suppose to be off topic?
by portlandgiirl91 on Dec 21, 2010 2:05 AM PST up reply actions
Yuh. Dave wrote a post about it, re-emphasizing that the JD is only for off topic material, and also to introduce the new mods.
Hmm..I’m not seeing the JD mentioned in there. Looks like I’ve misremembered, but Timmay has reiterated it multiple times.
It was implied I believe
Timmay posted up above clarifying that it applies here as much as anywhere else.
I think there is gonna be an adjustment period, I just hope we don’t lose anyone during it. The daily open thread might be a good idea, at least it would be a compromise.
I didn't remember any mention of keeping the JD off topic
I got the sense from Timmay that Dave had asked him to remind us to keep Blazer stuff in its relevant areas, and less in here.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Real
Blazers discussion is not for the JD. During game needs to be in GDTs (we know this), all postgame goes in the GDT/recap/media row report (somewhat new) and everything in between goes on the frontpage or in the fanposts (revolutionary).
This is purely off-topic, which inclused the rest of the NBA but not the Blazers.
will i be modulated if i start a “roy should be a starter” discussion in the junk?

Ugh, street swimming in mud, snow and ice thanks to a construction site down the road
Third in 3 years. I’m starting to hate this street.
that really sucks, sorry Nosrkie. is it just gross outside or is it “trapped inside” nasty out there?

It's sunny. I just hate that my quiet neck of the woods has become a construction site again.
I could have saved quite some money moving out a year ago when I also had more to buy something somewhere. I stayed and have nothing but trouble since then. It’s not loud, but you can hear it a bit in the background and right now it’s also making the street into a muddy snow and ice mess.
