A Fresh Take On Blazers Basketball
So I had my girlfriend, a newly minted blazers fan, watch the Mavericks game tonight and write up a post game analysis. Her email, entirely unbiased and uniquely lucid reveals our basketball team in its essence. Hilarity and keen observation make this a MUST READ.
i typed up my observations on my notepad because i was going to make them into something - like a video with my comments or something more cohesive but then top chef masters came on and i've been watching it with my dad - its our "thing" - so here are my brief thoughts. I realized when I was watching today that I really don't know anything about what's going on and I can't articulate my feelings at all and it's really annoying so I don't think I'll be doing this again anytime soon.
When I tuned in, it seemed as if the Blazers feel like they're trapped in a torture chamber. I think it's a feeling that is spreading from Brandon Roy to everyone else.
When the Blazers are doing well, it seems like they do what I see other teams doing – all the players want to get the ball and make passes or baskets. But when the Blazers aren't doing well, it seems like no one wants the ball and they just quickly throw it to whoever they can to get rid of it. That makes me feel sad. And when they're doing well it looks like they're having fun and loving each other. When they're doing poorly it looks like they all just want to quit the NBA and go somewhere to die peacefully. But they should be wanting to try hard all the time. That is why the more optimistic guys should get to play more.
The Blazers do seem to be better at getting rebounds when they try to make the baskets themselves than the teams I've seen them play. Offensive rebounds? But I think it would be better if they just made the baskets in the first place. Or maybe that's the strategy. Instead of passing it to people by the basket or running closer to the basket, they just shoot unrealistic shots from far away and hope someone on their team that is standing by the basket will get it and put it in.
Sometimes it seems like we just need one or two people on the court to get a little energy and then everyone else sort of gets into it. I think Wesley is good at it and sometimes Andre Miller and Batum goes both ways. And today something happened to LaMarcus and then everyone also got really inspired. I think Nate needs to put in these peppier guys more. I like that little Patty guy because it seems like he has some spunk. I think the team does a lot better when they have the more plucky and enthusiastic guys. Otherwise the whole team is in Brandon Bummersville. And then I heard at the end that he only made 4 points!! I once made fun of a British World Cup announcer for mentioning the virtues of a player's “optimism” on the field, but I think it is a valid point when talking about the Blazers.
Sometimes it seems like things are working pretty well and everybody is getting on the same page and starting to sparkle and then Nate makes some of them switch for other guys. I am trying to understand why that happens. Some of the guys that get switched out a lot seem like they don't want to try to make baskets as much.
I think LaMarcus did a great job overall today in the second half because I saw him getting free throws and making other baskets. And he was trying to make a lot of baskets from right under the basket, which I understand to be a good thing and also probably why he got to make foul baskets. He looked like he was having a good time and not like he wanted to kill himself, like some of the other guys.
It was really cute how the ESPN announcers were clearly rooting for the Blazers the whole time, because that's how I feel too.
I think it should feel like your team is doing well because of your coach, not in spite of him. But it seems like Nate always does the most annoying things! Not giving the guys on the bench (my dad just told me it's the bench when I asked him what the “not main guys” were called) enough of a chance to get into a “groove” (something that I just learned was real, but can now clearly see). I want to learn more about like “plays” and defense and stuff because I feel like he is also making annoying decisions in those areas but I just don't know enough to say for sure.

We played the Mavericks tonight.
ps I agree, LaMarcus was great in the fourth.
pps I agree, Hubie Brown is great.
ppps Is your girlfriend hot?
How old is this sage? I would enjoy reading more of her recaps in the future. And if she writes them about Top Chef, I’ll probably read those too.
Sage is 24
and yes, Tblazers, she is quite “hot”. I’m a fortunate guy. As for Top Chef, I don’t know much about it. However I do hope that some of the dishes made available through the show, appear on my dining room table…lol
OK....this is the freaking best post ever!!!!!!!!
I just read it to my girlfriend and she completely…GOT IT! I think now everything said above in her post MUST BE TRUE!

Sounds like somebody's been coaching her on
Brandon Roy and Nate…. those observations seem a bit “advanced”
If Oden does not give up on the Blazers, we should not give up on him.

maybe, they are the wipping boys right now
so she probably picked some of it up from external sources, but it seemed sincere to me.
All I know is it is painful to watch them when they are in torture chamber mode.
"Oh Yeah!" ~ Kool Aid Man
well
she has watched games with me a few times, so surely some of my perspectives have rubbed off on her. However, her view is largely her own. Although her basketball eye is an untrained one, she is still able to accurately describe the dynamic of the team from a much simpler perspective. That’s most amusing part for me.
torture chamber mode is going to stick
those 3 words are going to come flooding back into my head every time we start bricking long shots for 10 minutes straight
ISO 1-4 = Torture Chamber Mode
That and the team is starting to “sparkle.”
Those are going to live with me for the rest of the season. In fact, looking for sparkly moments might be the only reason I watch more games.
Awesome post.
Buck Williams for the hall of fame
that was really great!
can you have each of your other girlfriends write one too? but only for playoff teams from the Western Conference. i think that’s the best perspective/comparison to get.
really, this was a great read and i’m going to send it to my buddies who bleed for Rip City.
wow!
give this chick a job on BE. make sure no one lets her brush up on b-ball terminology though, cause she handles well in her own words Bench= the ones who are not the main guys. Classic!
I wish I had fresh eyes
What a great, unbiased evaluation of the team’s game (and the NBA in general). I feel like sometimes common sense is lost in the minutiae of the game, maybe more in baseball than in basketball, but the input of outsiders should never be forgotten about. I think there is occasionally more wisdom in the naivete of a fresh sports perspective than in many years of watching or playing or announcing.
I once had a girlfriend ask why the Blazers didn’t play full court press every time, instead of sort of trying to do so during the fourth quarter only. She thought they basically gave up 3/4 of the court on every play, and so did the opposition (Nuggets). I couldn’t argue with her. Every team in the NBA defends maybe a third of their court at the most, unlike football or soccer or hockey. I never would have noticed if not for an outsider’s point of view.
made em jump like Rod Strickland
I've often though about this.
But soccer and hockey have offsides rules that prevent cherry picking and make defending more area effective and low-risk.
In basketball you’d just see a lot of alley-oops from 3/4 court. Or just a lot of exhausted players.
Right
My point exactly. That is what made it so interesting for me as well. The purity of the naivety offered up a refreshing take on it all. My favorite part is:
Offensive rebounds? But I think it would be better if they just made the baskets in the first place. Or maybe that’s the strategy. Instead of passing it to people by the basket or running closer to the basket, they just shoot unrealistic shots from far away and hope someone on their team that is standing by the basket will get it and put it in.
Love this post.
Sometimes when you pull away all the jaded perspective of the aficionado, you find the kernel of truth we’re all trying to get to.
Hmmm...
I want to learn more about like "plays" and defense and stuff because I feel like he is also making annoying decisions in those areas but I just don’t know enough to say for sure.

I’ve noticed this too and it’s something they need to snap out of.
When one guy is not shooting well, suddenly nobody wants to shoot because theyre scared theyre going to miss too.

and miss is exactly what they do
Very hard to watch but I have noticed this too.
Play on our team
is so infectious, for better or for worse. When we get on a roll, everyone seems to play well but then when shots stop falling in successive possessions, then everyone really does become so timid and fearful. That is a direct byproduct of not having a go to guy who just says….“I got this” and gets the team back on track.
never looked at it quite like this
or should I say it looked like this but never described in this manner before.
Don’t forget the book ; Basketball for DummiesSmart People ….or maybe it’s Basketball Simplified 101
anyway very fresh, amusing and a great way to make the truth tolerable.(somewhat)
"You play good defense and let your offense generate from that. You will find that success of your offense, is proportional to the extent of your defensive diligence." Jack Ramsey philosophy (it works)
I don't know if this is authentic or just satire, or just unintentional satire,
but I thought it was hilarious and a fresh departure from the usual scathing critiques. In fact, the naive tone is even more damning. Well done.
LaMarcus is pretty good when he goes up against forwards as perimeter-oriented as he is
LMA is a good shooter. You give him that 18 footer without a body on him and he’ll make it.
The Leeroy Rule: being insistent >>>> being correct
Thanks Guys
For reading it…I was pretty sure when I read it that everyone else would appreciate it but nonetheless thanks for the kind words as well. I’m going to encourage her to do a few more segments throughout the year when she catches the games. We shall see how her analysis evolves.
cheers,
filip
I watch a lot of basketball
and I would be hard pressed to describe the problems with this team better than this.
I mean, there are a lot of Xs and Os one could get into, but a lot of it comes down to things a total noob understands after watching one game: attitude, confidence, energy, creativity, etc. Great post!
Holding out for Hedo
This was refreshing and made me smile!
and now we have a whole slew of new terms in the Blazersedge Lexicon….
Mike Barrett: “The Blazers have been in torture chamber mode for the last quarter and a half.”
Mike Rice: ‘Yeah, but that Wesley Matthews has been starting to sparkle. In fact, he seems to be the only one leading us out of Brandon Bummersville."
Mike Barrett: "Well if that’s the case, we can expect Nate to pull him for that peppier little Patty guy!"
Mike Rice: “You mean one of the not main guys?”
Mike Barrett: “Or Rudy. He’s always good for shooting unrealistic shots from far away and hoping someone on the team that is standing by the basket will get it and put it in.”
