What Do We Owe Roy?
This is so painful to write. I've put it off already, hoping that reality was wrong, that Roy could still compete at a professional level. But it's painfully obvious that's not the case. This season when Brandon was out we looked like a playoff team. Certainly a piece or two away from competing for a championship, but a solid playoff team for sure. As soon as Roy comes back we rattle off a 6 game losing streak, 3 of which were to lottery teams in the East! Roy is simply being dominated by middling players nearly every time he tries to drive. He still wants to run the offense and run the team. He says he's done limiting minutes. Every second he's on the floor he's a liability.
Most of what we hear from coaches and pundits is that we owe it to Roy to let him start and play all the minutes he wants to play, because of what he's done for the franchise.
Larry Miller said they gave Roy a max contract even though they knew his knees were shot and apparently un-insurable because they felt they owed it to him for what he's done for the franchise.
Of course, we can't get out of that contract. And paying someone max money for the next 5 years is going to make it virtually impossible to carry enough other good players to be a deep playoff team. But do we really owe it to Roy to play him 40 minutes a night, when we all can see that it will mean losing games we could easily win if he only played 25 minutes? Are we really going to throw away the season so Brandon doesn't feel left behind?
I say we pay Brandon and that's all we owe him. We'd love nothing more than for him to have a positive impact on the court, but if he is unable to do so he needs to sit. Andre, Marcus, Wesley, LaMarcus, Nicolas, these guys all play hard and deserve a chance to be on a team that competes. The first three had a choice, they signed deals with Portland because they thought we would compete. And the fans who continue to buy tickets and merchandise also deserve to see a competitive team.
So is Roy's max contract not payment enough? Do we also owe it to him to let him play poorly for 40 minutes night after night, Farve-style, when it's obvious to everyone except Brandon that he doesn't have it anymore?
Now that I've written this watch him put up 30 @ Dallas on Wednesday.
PLEASE BRANDON MAKE ME EAT THESE WORDS!!!!

It's not what the franchise owes him,
Nate has a 5 year track record with Brandon to weigh against Roy’s performance this season. He may arrive at the need to bench Brandon, but he will not do so lightly.
"The only 'Advanced Metric' that matters is what you see with your eyes." -Timbo, Nov., 2009.
We owe Roy respect, if not big minutes or a starring role.
He’s a great competitor and a warrior, and anyone can see that he’s playing through a lot of pain.
I’m not saying that he should hang it up, but he reminds me of a great player at the end of his career who has yet to accept that he’s never going to be the same.
"I don't get much. I don't expect much. I don't give much. I'm generally happy with whatever comes my way."
We did not look like a playoff team without Roy
The Nuggets played terrible. The Grizzlies played stupid and only lost by one. The Jazz played well and spanked us badly in the 4th. The team looked better in that 4 game winning streak with Roy.
That said Roy has looked terrible in the last two and half games. He is about to bench himself which I would rather see. Like I said in another thread its time for Manhattan Project on Roy’s knees.
I am disappointed in Blazers Edge for the existance of this post.

I am disappointed in Blazers Edge that this comment went green.
It’s a fans JOB to ask these questions.

The Blazers owe him 5 years of big checks.
We as fans owe him some appreciation for 3 excellent, entertaining years.
I don’t dislike the guy, I just think he’s done as a cornerstone player. Playing him 30+ minutes is accomplishing nothing.
Dario Argento might be disappointed, but I’m more disappointed in what is happening on the court.

Four excellent years.

Sad to say Roy is just a burden at this point
He was one of my favorite players to watch, but it’s almost tragic to see how ineffective he is at this point in his career. I don’t see how much longer we can go around starting him and playing him extended minutes like the star player he once was

I hate to say it, because I have loved the guy every second he's been in Portland
But he looks exactly like he did when he came back last season in the playoffs. Everyone thought it was because it had only been 7 days after surgery. This season sucks, but I still think he’ll find a way to eventually contribute on a nightly basis. He’ll end up coming off the bench regardless, but hopefully he’s not completely ruined.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Mabe they're trying to run him into a medical retirement. They'll still owe him the money but at least it will come off the cap.
Probably the best alternative
If they knew his knees were beyond repair, all parties except the NBA wins. Roy gets his money for being willing to run himself into the ground (at least going out with valor) and the Blazers can save face by seeming loyal. Once he has to undergo experimental (since its never been tried on a pro athlete) meniscus replacement, the Blazers with either be able to get an injury exemption or write off the entirety of the contract. If Roy comes back miraculously without pain, he may still be worth max money, but what are the odds of that?
The header of this post was unsettling
but, I have to agree. Roy is going ot collect 70, 80, 90 million plus dollars? Who knows? Roy actually owes the Blazers. They signed away their future…a move almost no one else would have done.
Roy has been my favorite player for a LONG time, but enough is enough. Sit down, collect your huge checks and heal buddy! If you are going to get fixed in the future, your chances are better resting and playing never to a point you are pushing yourself through and inordinate amount of pain.
By pushing it only speeds up a bad ending. By waiting, there’s hope and healing for the future. It doesn’t make sense for him to be on the floor ruining his and our chances of the team and himself able to be on equal grounds. Don’t know if this team has enough common sense………..?
Trail Blazers Check List Since 2007:
1. Hire new Training Staff based on restoring symmetry to physical body.
2. Replace Nate MicMillan with coach with proven success at highest level.
3. Develop LMA's handles until he becomes Kevin Durant 0.8
I hate saying it but the team needs to learn to play without Roy on a nightly basis, when he comes in they focus around him and they get confused…I love Roy but the blazers made a huge mistake by giving me the max contract knowing he had problems…we did trade our future away but this was not the only mistake..alot of us saw it last yr and was begging for more big moves…but alot of you thought nic and la was the next messiah and didn’t want to trade anyone on our championship team!!!!alot of you were blinded like management thinking we were something we were not!! hope we have learned our lesson the wait and it could go in a couple of direction you cant fir the coach and blow up the team at the same time!!
I'm done with Roy
Can’t the Blazers just cut him like they did with Steve Francis?
John Adams, Frederick Douglass, Geronimo, Patrick Henry, John Paul Jones, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman are all losers compared to Andre Miller. Andre Miller, a true hero.
No no no
The Darius Miles Injury Exception rule (which the Trailblazers helped initiate) specifically states that we would first have to trade Roy for Zach Randolph, then sign Darius Miles, then send an angry email to the other teams, then trade to get Roy back, then soak $50 million in gasoline and set it on fire in a cocaine-fueled haze, before we could technically cut Roy. With a knife. Any other kind of cutting is not recommended by the CBA.
However, I hear Pau Gasol is available for a Spaniard and a former #1 pick big man bust, and Chris Wallace is just itchin’ to pull that trigger.
made em jump like Rod Strickland
We dont owe roy anything
then only group that should be asking for more is the fans
The Blazers organization knew about how bad Roy’s knees were when they gave him that max contract, and they were dumb enough not to get his knees insured. Year after year there is always a front office mistake, but were kept so in the dark we don’t realize it till its to late.
lol what? I don't owe him squat
If anything, he owes me
He most certainly owes Paul Allen

Roy's Contract...Things to consider?
Regarding Roy and his minutes per game… I’m wondering how much his contract factors into decisions made by the coaching staff and himself. Like, maybe he doesn’t make as much money if he doesn’t produce sufficient stats or play a certain number of minutes? Maybe there’s a fine line here: if the coaching staff benches him without letting him try to do his thing, then maybe he gets paid, etc. Can anyone elaborate?
Btw, I didn’t appreciate his comments in Quick’s Oregonian peice today regarding Miller’s playing style. I know Roy is frustrated, and I feel bad for the guy, but this doesn’t seem like the right thing to do on his part.
yes agree
See my post- I’m tired of the “it’s not me it’s Dre” intimations. Someone needs to intervene.
$8.00 for a Coors Light at the RG?

Don't be fooled...
Folks don’t be fooled by this “We knew about the knees in advance of the max contract” talk. This is corporate speak which translated means “We didn’t know it was THIS bad in advance, but if Paul Allen found out we gave $80 Large to this guy we’re toast.” So what you say is “yes we knew it… we’re on top of it… and we still think Brandon will be a big contributor down the road”.
Secondly- I’m tired of the Broy speak at this point. I was a big fan but turns out this guy is either a drama queen (errr king) or he’s got some other issues going on inside his head that he needs to get straightened out. When you bounce around from… This is preseason, I’ll be ready for the game… to I’m going to get the ball more we’re going to go back to how it was 2 years ago… to not sure if he can perform… to it’s not me it’s the other guys- Dre plays slow and I play slow… so something’s got to change…. and so on and so on and so on…. bla bla bla…
What needs to change is Broy needs to someone to sit him down and get his head straight. I’m willing to bet the team’s on/off court issues have MORE to with the inability of Brandon to lead this team, than they are tired from a hard start to the season. I think this team is desperate for Nate (et al) to officially anoint a new leader. Brandon has lost this moniker to Camby and/or Miller ALREADY, and I think he is having issues adjusting. Peace.
$8.00 for a Coors Light at the RG?
Owe him?
The contract he signed. For the rest the current Roy is owed nothing. He’s not playing like the Roy who signed the contract. He’s not speaking like the Roy who signed the contract and he certainly isn’t leading the team like the Roy who signed the contract. If this was the NFL, they’d cut him faster than you can say “used to be a fan favorite.”
