Double Standard Revealed Once Again
So...
In the wake of the Andre Miller suspension, what with the league review and the infamous "memo", is there going to be a reviewing of Dwight Howards heinous, blatant, and flagrant foul on Rudy Fernandez?
Dwight uses his +7 Giant Strength to jump over Rudys back and then proceeds to grab our fragile Spaniard and twist his temperamental spine in a most frightening and horrific manner. All the while jawing "What you gonna do about it? What you gonna do about it?" as the "refs" separate the two.
Does the league review this play and suspend superman? Is it even a news story in the NBA or is it just another case of superstar treatment in a long history of hypocrisy?

Its not. Thats the problem. Like you said, double standard. I’ll be extremely surprised if Stern does anything about it.

What if
Rudy turned around and kicked him square in the genitals?
Would both players be ejected from the game/suspended for a game or would Rudy just be suspended for defending himself?
we can still win........

Yeah that would be funny
I’d probably laugh long and hard.
That's a great photo.
I like how the caption has to indicate which guy is fouling, by pointing out that Dwight Howard is on “top.”
look at Rudys face
you can tell his back is paining him from this photo and this was only the beginning of the foul
we can still win........
wish I could find some video

Plus Rudy usually punks Howard
Passes the ball between his legs, makes it look like he’s gonna dunk and then throw it behind him to LA or floats a shot way over Howard’s head. Still, hardly seems fair for him to ride and then obviously hold onto Rudy when he’s much larger than Rudy. It took Pryz, Miller and Dante to pry him loose!
He's just upset that I won't call him Superman
No matter how many commercials he makes.
Just waiting for the Ducks to lose.
One of the TNT guys said Rudy was the one spinning Dwight around.
Right, cuz Rudy’s so much bigger and stronger, y’know.
Rudy is a very strong 175 lbs. Dwight had no idea what hit him.
I can’t believe Rudy didn’t get suspended actually…
How can any of you homers think Rudy was justified in being under Howard on that play.
OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!!
Sure things might not be looking great right now, but look on the bright side. I have liquor.

Really I'm just glad Rudy beat him for the rebound.
The foul itself had nothing on Miller’s push. I see no double standard.

Hmmmm
I have no issues with what Miller did but I also think the league did the right thing in suspending him. You can’t let guys body check other players. Personally I think a fine would have sent the same message without costing him his streak but they had to do something. It might have also been a bit more consistent to have fined Griffen for shoving him twice but that would set an extremely annoying precedent.

So then about the Rudy/Howard thing
I wouldn’t equate the two incidents. It would be a bit more difficult to determine who was pulling who around and it was also more of a heat of the moment thing than a premeditated act like Miller’s.

I think it's pretty OBVIOUS that Rudy was pulling Dwight around.
Rudy just LOOKS like he weighs 100 # less and has less muscle mass than Dwight.
You've ventured into Soccer Mom territory here
I don’t disagree that the league levies discipline unevenly, but Dwight Howard’s foul wasn’t even a shadow of what Andre Miller did….. I mean… they aren’t comparable in any way. If Howard wanted to hurt Rudy, or “send a message”, the Spaniard would be dead.
Then again, I’m not even sure you’re being serious. The line about “frightening and horrific manner” is strangely reminiscent of the part in Rain Man, where Raymond Babbitt started to write out a formal complaint of abuse against his brother. I’m 2/3 certain that this post is a joke. Right?

I am dead serious
That was a malicious foul meant to cause injury and born of frustration.
It was not called a foul by the refs but if the league, in their infinite wisdom, is going to review plays (like Andres) why would they not review this?

This is why I want Dwight Howard on the Blazers, and why I am so upset that we don’t have Greg anymore. I don’t know if you remember us getting tossed around like fluffy soft little ragdoll sillynannies the last two years in the playoffs but I do. I want more tough guys that won’t take bullying, and will dish it back.

I am all for self police-ing
but if the league is going to review plays after the fact, they need to review ALL plays of a “questionable” nature and distribute whatever they are passing off as “justice” evenly.
we can still win........
It isn't a double standard because they were right in the middle of the play
whereas they made a point about how Miller hit Griffin away from any type of play.
That said, it should have been at least a technical the way he wouldn’t let go.
That photo reminds me of this one time in prison...

For what it is worth...
Having watched the play, the replay and now looking at the picture of it linked to above, I’ve had to conclude that Howard wasn’t trying to hurt Rudy at all. They got their arms tangled, Rudy turned to his right, that threw Howard off-balance and pulled him forward onto Rudy. The next thing I saw was Howard correcting and trying to actually keep Rudy and himself from falling – he would have landed on Rudy if that had happened, possibly injuring both of them – and in order to do so Rudy had to end up in an awkward position because of their arms being locked as they were.
Now, I’ll grant anyone the point that Howard held the pose too long after he was upright again, instead of immediately releasing Rudy’s arm, but I don’t believe he intended any harm with the whole sequence of events.
"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."
Maybe the NBA decided that Howard's +7 Giant Strength
was offset by Rudy’s +10 facial hair awesomeness.
We can only assume Superman is still Superseething

Rudy’s neck is not broken here, only fractured.
Rudy’s spine is only partially twisted into a mesh of sinew and cartilage.
And if I remember correctly Howard is within 20 feet of the ball.
I don’t get your rant – this is clearly a basketball move.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
