Zach Lowe On Struggling Portland Trail Blazers

150
Zach Lowe over at SI.com takes a look at Portland's recent struggles, and the effects of Brandon Roy's ill health in particular. ----------------------- [Brandon Roy's] assist rate has plummeted. This is the most telling difference in Roy, who, in peak condition, can be counted on to assist on roughly 25 percent of Portland’s baskets while on the court. That’s an elite number for someone who isn’t a point guard, and it previously allowed Portland’s point men (Steve Blake and Andre Miller) to pick their spots instead of serving as the fulcrum of Portland’s offense. Roy has assisted on just 13 percent of baskets while on the floor this season, which puts him in Rudy Gay/Kevin Durant territory. Roy didn’t register a single assist Tuesday in Philadelphia – just the fifth time that’s happened in his career and the second time already this season. ----------------------- We've discussed how quickly the book got out on guarding Brandon Roy recently, how the hard double-teams evaporated and his ability to drive and collapse the defense disappeared. Lowe's look at the numerical output of these developments is one of many nice insights in his piece. -- Ben Golliver | benjamin.golliver@gmail.com | Twitter
